Anyway, sold the GH5 and have an S5 now. First wedding today. Let's see how it does!

I haven't used dual recording but for regular recording I use a Sandisk extreme 150MB/s V30 card.

I thought it was always unlimited. But yes in 4k there is no record limit unless its 4k 60p where it's 30 mins.

I have been saying this for a long time, the focus peaking on the S5 is horrible to the point of unusable; I have to punch in to focus and it seems that then sometimes focus peaking is decent but its still better to just look at the screen and try to gauge sharpness that way. The focus peaking is definitely nowhere near as good as the GH5.

It's unlikely to have the same lowlight abilities given how large the sensor needs to be.

It means phase detect, which is what everyone else has now. Dual pixel is what Canon calls their auto focus, but I'm not sure if it's the same thing as phase detect.

    GH6 uses a dual-aspect sensor, similar to GH5S.
    5.2K 4:3
    5.7K 16:9
    <7ms rolling shutter
    with all pixel PDAF

They are both extremely good in low light, S5 perhaps even more so to my eye.
Haven't done anything scientific in terms of testing the dual gain yet. Good idea for a blog post though.

Just to add, I'm thinking of selling my GH5 and the 10-25 and getting a S1 and 24-105 f4. I just really like what I'm seeing from the FF Panasonics. I'd get a S5 if it had a better EVF as I shoot 70% with EVF

Well if you do and are interested in buying a used 24-105 in mint nick, let me know...and postage from France to Espagne is cheap 🤑
Nothing wrong with it, just no place in my kitbag and it’s gathering dust.
The only reason I still have it is I need to exchange my Sigma 28-70mm at some point due to the ghosting issue and I have been holding on to the Panny zoom for that eventuality, but it’s not critical.

David Thorpe passed away on May 25th. For those that aren't familiar, David was a huge proponent of M43 and shared his love of photography on his blog and YouTube channel.
A message from his family can be read in the description of this video:
His channel is well worth checking out. He was a very thoughtful reviewer.
    His blog is also excellent:

I made a decision to return my camera. Hopefully the seller (amazon, third party) takes it back without issue. I found the focus peaking to be totally inadequate for manual glass, coming from the GH5 or S1 or even an old Canon with magic lantern.

I've been on the good ship Panasonic for 11 years now, using the GH series for my video business.
Last year I got an S1 to pair with my GH5. I love the combo as an A/B setup for interviews, and for location shooting having the GH5 with the stellar Leica 8-18mm on the gimbal ready to roll. It's a small and powerful system I can put in a single backpack and the Lumix cameras have never missed a beat for me, bullet-proof in professional environments.
However... after a brief flirtation with a C200 I crave built-in NDs and more video-centric ergonomics. The C200 was too heavy and large for my tastes, but the C70 is close to the perfect A camera for me. I'm very tempted. The main reason I haven't switched already is Canon don't have a bullet-proof B cam in their R series line up yet, nothing I would trust over a GH5 for the wide range of work I do (sometimes having to lock off a camera and let it run for 2 hours). I love Panasonic, I want them to keep my business, but the temptation is getting greater. It sounds silly, but a GH6 and S1H II with built-in NDs (up to at least 8 stops) would probably be enough to keep me and upgrade both cameras. I trust them to knock all the other features out the park.

If you went for the TechArt then a cheap M42-M adapter stuck on it will give you autofocus capability for them.
It works far better (in stills at least which is what you say is your primary use for it) than I'd imagined when I bought it.

If they are sticking with 4k (which is fine if it is downsampled from 6k), then they really need to soup it up in other ways:
    - Raw to SSD (hopefully BRaw or ProRes Raw)
    - Internal electronic ND (this would be huge)
    - Some nice internal codecs like ProRes
    - 180-240fps in 10-bit 4k
    - Best IBIS in the business (which the GH5 had)
    - Full V-Log, 13-14 stops of dynamic range
    - Timecode! (which I assume it will have like S1H)
    - Great video AF - either ToF or PDAF.
Too many (not that much more expensive) full frame cameras can do 120fps in 4k, 8k, raw over HDMI, etc to just put out a solid update. Needs to be include some BIG upgrades (Raw and NDs would be very attention-grabbing).
The GH5 was pretty revolutionary in its specs, but it faced no competition in the 10-bit, 4k, IBIS, XLR capture arenas when it was released. Now, not so much.

Update on my broken S5 that no-one will be interested in:
Finally got it returned. Screen fixed. Gave it a test run and . . . none of the buttons on the back except play and veiwfinder buttons work any more including the focus type switch!! The camera is now totally useless. Can't believe it.
Rang the repair company direct and they were surprised but at least contrite and back it will go. I suspect there is some small connecting wire they forgot to re-attach but then didn't think to press any of those buttons to test it since the screen works fine (and all the buttons and wheels on the top).
I did enquire of the company I bought it from that really I should be able to ask for a replacement camera. They agreed but claimed stocks are non-existent and supply times for new stock is months away, all due to the pandemic. Do I believe that? Dunno but I decided pushing it would only stress me out even more so repair again it is.
    Sigh.

All the 6K stuff and 180p etc.
I've just come to realise that if this were any other normal year ( no pandemic) I would have bought a A7Siii or FX3 and be done with it (even though I prefer Panasonic ergonomics and image). It's just easier working with other people who all seem to have Sony. In the past it was Canon when I had my C100.
It's a shame. If the S5 had a good EVF I'd be really interested. I'm not sure I'm really that interested in waiting for better m43 and I have a fine set of lenses including the 10-25 and Voigts but I'm in the process of selling them.

Tricky to define but the summary would be as follows...
Since moving from full frame Nikon D3s 10 years ago, I was all about compact and lightweight kit.
For the last couple of years, hybrid in a single body type.
I was put off anything S1 flavored for the last year or so due to I will admit, YouTube content creators repeated mantra of, “they are so massive and weigh a ton”. I swallowed that. Until I got one.
My ‘dream’ camera is a Leica SL2 for photo and a SL2-S for video, paired up to fulfill my hybrid needs.
Why? The caché, the legend, all that shit.
But then there is the reality...
Could I justify the cost? Nope, not really.
Is the lack of a tilt screen an issue? Actually, stop kidding yourself, yes it is.
Is the S1R a better all round proposition, badge aside, over an SL2? Probably yes.
Do I really really really need 47mp or for 99% of my needs, isn’t 24mp better and then there is the tripod hi res mode for uber-detailed landscape shots so...
    OK, so S1, S1H or S5 then.
I like and almost love the S5 but it falls short in 2 areas principally and these are; the flip out screen (the S1H’s is perfection) and once you have used the EVF on the S1H, the S5’s is really like stepping back in time.
The S1’s on off switch is in the wrong place and the top screen is like a 1990’s digital watch.
The S1H just feels right in the hand and doesn’t just feel like the premium product that it is, but has that ‘specialness’ about it that some stuff just has and some stuff just does not.
It is now without question my A camera for both stills and video and it’s only...and I mean ONLY flaw (in my opinion) is the less than stellar tracking AF.
Could be a bit cheaper maybe, but then it’s a premium item so IMO, worth it.
My S5 is now very much my B cam. Still hybrid, but not my primary camera.
Oh and just to conclude on the whole size and weight thing...the IBIS is superb, the rear screen is superb and for my needs does not need; a cage or additional grip, a monitor or a gimbal and when paired with Sigma’s new 28-70mm f2.8...well ha, it’s smaller and lighter than anything with bits added to it.
Apologies for the GH5.5 digress, but it’s kind of related as the S1H is my ‘GH6’.
Apologies if you now want an S1H but it’s just fucking superb.

As it seems more and more likely this is real, I'm just filled with disappointment. I've got a hard decision to make soon: do I run my M43 kit until I have to switch systems or do I sell my kit now while it still has decent monetary value that I can put towards a new system? And what system do I go with? Ugh.

A GH6 with Pro Res, a GH5s-style sensor---with Panasonic proprietary Speed booster for L-mount lenses, that great stabilization, and DPAF---BIG success IMHO.
These features would go a long way to eliminating the GH5's double Achilles heel: AF and noise.
I LOVED my GH5s....but no stabilization took its toll---but what a great camera with a beautiful image. Dare I say Panasonic has very much caught up with Canon vis a vis color? I love the colors out of the S5---they have an embarrassment of riches for the video shooter---but it all needs to be crowned with Pro Res and DPAF---the Pro Res would draw a lot of both Canon and Sony shooters.
    My 2¢
Always inciteful and provocative. That's the reason for the staying power of EOSHD.

It's so self sabotaging, because by doing this to your customers pretty much ensures that they're never going to buy your products again.
I love my GH5. I love the XLR adapter. It is such a compact set up. I use it for everything from filming pro wrestling to interviews. I don't have to build up a rig unless I want to... just throw a lens on, connect the XLR adapter and you can get excellent results. No fuss.
I WANT to stay. Give me a reason to! Can't lead the pack with specs now that full frame has caught up? Fine! Innovate in other ways! What's stopping you from putting a GH5 into a GX85 body? I'd buy two, along with a GH6! Nothing would delight me more than even smaller, lighter cameras! I'd carry one with me pretty much at all times!
And I don't believe this notion that you can't sell a kick ass GH6 for less than a S5 because the truth is there's a segment of the full frame market that won't consider a M43 camera no matter what the specs are. Go for broke, fuck it! Or just give people what they want: I mean just adding phase detect AF alone to decent bumps in specs would sell a bunch of new M43 cameras!

Is manual focus an option at all for this situation?
Because the S-Series of cameras have pretty much the best features for manual focus. they have linear focus and you can customize the amount of focus throw.
They also have the AF+MF, so you can set the camera in AF-S and then just rotate the focus ring to override in to manual focus.
Unfortunately though, still can't punch in while recording.
