gt3rs got a reaction from kye in DJI Announcing Something New On The 28th
I agree the one x style cameras is the future of action cam and for some usage even normal camera. I have one and once reframed the quality is just barely usable but it is so much easier to film especially for things that you cannot retake.... making timeshift with this is soo easy... you can also mimic gimbal and drone shoot (using a long pole) with ease.
Workflow could be better... lcd is almost useless    as lowlight.... but reframing in post is just more easy and convenient....
similar form factor with 1inch 8k 24/5 fps and 5.7k 50/60fps I would buy even for 4 time the price

Buy a gaming notebook with at least 8 GB Video Ram. For resolve gpu ram is more important than the system RAM. I edit on a ASUS gaming notebook with 16 GB Ram and Nvidia GTX 1070 with 8 GB Ram. I edit 4k 60fps Mjpg and 4k 60 fps h264 without issue and without render cache or optimize media.

gt3rs got a reaction from padam in Is the 1DX2 still worth getting?
I remember when I brought the 1Dx II more than two years ago and a lot of people were saying when the Sony A7s III will come, when the G5 will come, when this and when that.... 2.5 years after if you need 4k 60p and great AF the 1Dx II is probably still the best choice. It is not perfect but is a great camera.
Considering that it is a 2.5 years old model I would try to find a used one instead of buying a new one...
    Pro:
    4k60p with great quality
    Super video AF
Solid codec 4:2:2 (funny that everybody is saying that the EOS R has fixed the codec but the ALL-I at 480Mbits is 4:2:0, I take the 1Dx II at 500Mbits 4:2:2, the addition of the 120mbits h264 is anyway welcome on the R)
    Very good rolling shutter
4k120p with AF (quality ok, not great)
    Super sports/actions camera for photo
    Very quick camera to operate
    Cons:
    No C-Log
    Expensive
CFcard for 4k60 are expensive but got cheaper lately
    Big and heavy
    No Zebra
    Fix LCD
If you do only video I think the C200 is a better buy but if you want a camera that does it all the 1Dx II is a solid choice (assuming that 4k60p and great video AF are key requirements)

gt3rs got a reaction from Robert Collins in eGPU for video processing on a laptop – Does it make sense?
On Windows with many gaming notebooks available with either a GTX 1070 or 1080 that have basically the same perf as the desktop counterpart card an eGPU doesn't make too much sense. If you buy a notebook is for the portability so these new gaming notebooks allow you to edit on the road with no issue at all. I have a ASUS 15'' i7 7700HQ with a GTX 1070 with 8 GB Vram and I can do real-time editing and grading on a 4k timeline is Resolve.

It can be done with a Drone and is not that difficult but drones are less stable indoors than outdoor due to the lack of GPS signal. I have flown my DJI P4p many time indoors and if the indoor location is well illuminated is quite stable.
For indoor the smaller the drone the better it is, because it can be more easily maneuvered, make less noise and the most important part they are less dangerous. A smaller drone like DJI Spark (HD only) with propeller guards is probably the best one for the indoor shoot. DJI Mavic would also work but it would be already quite big to maneuver in such small height advantage is that is 4k but also you can buy a full cage for propellers so no risk to cut the face or finger of the actor.
Anyway I would not recommend flying so close over an actor head without a lot of experience. I would not buy a drone just for this shoot even if you need to redo it many times as Grimor said a Crane/JIb is way easier and safer and you can also record audio... drones indoors make tons of noise and some wind.
Outdoor any good drone will do the job but pay attention that every country has its own altitude limits. All DJI drones are capped at max 500m altitude from takeoff point, but in many countries the law limit is way below.

I have the tiffen vari nd 82 and as other have mentioned it suffer from the x effect at maximum stop and it does not have hard stops that is a real pain. You simply bump the lens and it rotates so there is no way to fix the ND value. I would buy the Heliopan... buy the largest one that you need and some step down rings... it will not fit inside the hood of the smallest lenses...

Agree - once it was desirable to use the best features of each ( PP for editing and Audio - Resolve for grading) but recent editions of both apps have brought them much closer together in terms of capability. I'd still argue that Resolve is  better for grading but it's no longer significantly inferior in other areas and PP is not too bad for grading (I just find the interface messy). You do need the studio version to work with 4k 10bit GH5 files but the price is not unreasonable and if you are doing a lot of work I'd say well worth it for not dealing with  transcoding and roundtriping which are 'workarounds' and not 'workflows'.

gt3rs reacted to jcs in LOL Canon... C200 Codec "Upgrade" details announced
+ killer AF! No competition on the market at that price point. Recently shot an art piece on the 1DX II at 4K60 (vs. C300 II which has 10-bit but no 60p) and 8-bit was fine. Most of the shots wouldn't have been possible without DPAF (the alternative would have been a wireless FF and an AC).
For those with a $7500 camera budget, especially if one has many Canon lenses, it's a no brainer. Again, the C300 II doesn't do 4K60, the C200 does. If the C200 had been available when we got the 1DXII, we would have gotten the C200 to get 4K60 instead.
The most popular camera on this forum right now, the GH5, is a useful tool which creates great images, however it's not in the same league as the C200. Both products are priced fairly for their performance and features.

I agree and the potential is huge and I belive most people have not yet realized the impact that will have in a few years.... having a full sphere stabilized where you can later on reframe and do camera movement in post especially as b cam it is huge. Currently the end quality is way too crappy but with 8k a better sensor and lens and it will become super usefull.
I'm curious to see the gopro fusion if it is better althroug I'm not expectin miracle at this time.

It has a fixed aperture at F4. You can dream that it goes to F16 but they forgot to write it anywhere because is not that important;-)
Action camera are used also in lowlight and combined with the light needed for hfr a 2.8 lens would be quite usefull. I do a lot of low light sports so for me 2.8 would have been better. DJI manages to put a 24mm 2.8-11 lens on a 1' sensor in a tiny package so  Sony should have done it too...

Have you ever shot with the 5D4? because it sounds like baseless erroneous assumptions you are making here.. fyi FHD has improved since the 5D3.
As for C-Log it is far from useless.. for matching footage from other C-log cams, getting creative with grades or extending DR.. it doesn't seem to break much on the "dinosaur codec"

DPAF isn't the only advantage (it's a big one though!). The 5DIV now has C-Log with view assist. It can shoot full read-out DCI 4K. MJPEG is a high bitrate 422 codec (for some that's a plus). Wi-fi remote capability is superior to Nikons.
Another false statement. Canon EF-S lens aren't compatible, but third party APS-C EF mount lenses absolutely are. The Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 is a perfect pair for the 5D4 and gives a very workable range for video work.
As for the 4K image quality, I disagree. Sharpness isn't everything (and I wouldn't call the 5D4 4K very soft). As far as color sampling (422), motion, lack of artefacts etc.. the 5D4/1DC/1DX2 DCI 4K is superior to most internal 4K from the competition imo..

Not sure where the C200 it fall short on important areas?
Dave is interested according to his question to 4k 60p and there the difference between 1Dx II and C200 is 20% so the cost in file size is well worth for RAW.
Worst case scenario after the firmware you get 4k RAWLight at 1 GBits, 4:2:2 8bit 300 Mbits, 4:2:0 150 Mbits and all up to 4k 60p not like the EVA1 that is only 4:2:0 at 60p. Best case you get 4:2:2 10 bits 400 MBits instead of the 8 bits. The DPAF could be better but is still the best on any dedicated video camera.
I agree that the 1DX does not look like a cinema camera so it is more discrete.

With a decent hw (4 core i7 notebook) MJPEG is no problem at all to edit. On my gaming notebook there is no difference in speed between mjpg and DNxHR in resolove at 4k 60p.
RAWlight needs more HW I guess especially over 30p... but I would need to test it again once I find a 4k 60p RAWlight file:
Is not yet sure if it will be 8 bit or 10bit.... a guy from Canon USA stated that it will be 8bit, a guy from Canon Japan stated that it will not be 8bit..(so 6bit:-) or 10bit).
First question to ask is what percentage of photo vs. video you do with your 1DC? In my case is 60% photos 40% video... best would be to have both the 1Dx II and add the C200 but it becomes expensive...
Rent is good idea looking forward to your opinion

I have the 1Dx II and I love it. Great for action photo and also great for video and for me is very good to be able to do both with a single camera.
But as video camera there is really no contest at least on paper:

    C200
    + NDs!!
+ RAWLight (at 60p no big difference in file size 1000 Mbits vs 800 Mbits 1Dx)
    + h264 150 Mbits for long recording
    + audio
    + no recording limit
+ mp4 proxy (can be used also as backup too)
    + DR in RAWLight
    + Log and lut monitoring
    + Viewfinder
    + integrated WiFi
    + zebra, waveforms, etc….
    - 1.5 crop
    - no photos
    - a bit bigger
    - DPAF not as good as the 1Dx II
    - more expensive especially if buying a used 1Dx II
    - For RAWLight better Computer needed as MJPEG
    Same weight
Not sure about the 120 fps quality which is better and if the C200 can AF at 120fps

If you plan to keep the 1Dc I would not buy a 1Dx II but a C200. Anyway I would wait a bit to see how the C200 fares on the real world… now that the first units are delivered we should see more videos and experience sharing.

Did you read my post? Do you know that Canon has announced a firmware? Do you know that your reccomended EVA1 also need a firmware update for the middle codec and that is only up to 30p, 60p will be 4:2:0 8bit LGOP only?
I agree that the firmware is not out yet for protecting the C300 II.

I was looking in to the same thing. I have a P4p that is the first drone with a usable camera for photography and I’m looking for a even better solution.
I agree with Oli and the I2 is IMO the best compromise, still a manageable size, ready to fly and you can control everything from the App including zoom and focus. Yes, the quality is for sure less than an A7 series but is much more practical. You are ready to fly in less than 2 minutes.
The Matrice 600Pro is very big and heavy. It is also very dangerous, I’m not sure that moving from a Phantom to this class of drone is a smart thing to do but you know your skill better than me so is up to you.
With the M600Pro you cannot control the camera (A7x) other that the shutter, you cannot even start and stop the video from within the drone app. You could use the wifi+app of the camera to have some control at closer distance but it is still a pita. You probably would need a follow focus system that is also expensive and cumbersome. If you have not used a gimbal like the Ronin MX you will also need to balance the camera/lens combination every time that is time consuming especially at the beginning. (I have a Ronin M)
The M600Pro is a kit that you need to assemble yourself so is not really ready to fly.
    With 5’000 EUR you don’t even start… the M600Pro is 5’700 + 1’800 the gimbal + 2700 (3 x 900 Battery set for 20-25 min flight) + some accessory you are well above 10’000 Euro…
I suggest that you research a bit on the DJI forums around the M600 to see what kind of complexity it has.
At the end is a choice between easy to use, transport and quick setup vs. complex and time consuming setup, compromised usability for better quality.
My dream would be the X5s (I2 camera) on a Phantom size drone….
Why not rent a GH5 with a couple of lens and test the photo quality it will be almost the same as the X5s on the Inspire 2?

gt3rs got a reaction from tomastancredi in Is a sub $900 or 1.200 laptop enough for raw and/or 4k in Davinci?
Today I did a 5 hours editing session and I did check the temperature and throttling. First I converted h264 files to DNxHD and the machine did run for 1h continuously at 100% CPU with a temp around 80° C for CPU and 65 for GPU (gpu was doing almost nothing) and it did not throttle at all always around 3.380 GHZ. I then did 3 hours of editing and grading 4k and there was really no stress and at the end the final render the CPU went up to 84-87° C throttling it at 3300-3350 GHZ. At the end I played with C200 RAW natively on a 4k 25p timeline with some grading while letting loop continuously the preview it did reach 89° C the CPU and 80° the GPU and after 10 minutes it did throttle down to 3000 GHZ.
In my opinion is a non issue for editing because you never play continuously the video so it cools down between every preview.... Worst case it throttle down for the final render but there is not an issue if it becomes 10% slower...
Games are probably different because the load is continuous, but I'm not a gamer so I cannot comment on it.
Bottom-line for portable editing and grading in Resolve it is a good compromise between price, perf and portability. In 3 months that I have used it for editing and grading I never run in to issues du to the heat.
