    Hello,
All filmmaking forums I visit are directly related to gear or craft but none have anything to do with the business side of filmmaking. Are there good forums out there on this topic, or is it an idea to create a subforum for this here?

Offcourse it will be different per niche and parts of the world, but I think there will be a great overlap overall.

Just start a new thread here! (like this one)
I personally don't think it is a great idea to make heaps and heaps of subforums, as that ends up diluting down the number of members viewing each forum regularly. But that's up to Andrew.

Yeah, The Hobbit in HFR was a surprising wake up for me regarding why I like 24fps.  Everything just popped out and looked weird, and I remember a lot of people liking the look.  The newest TVs with their "frame smoothing" feature that generates in-between frames on 24p content drive me just as crazy when I visit a friend's house.
I don't think it necessarily means we'll never be watching movies at 120fps in 32k, but it seems we'll need some technical revolution to help blend in all the cheats used in narrative content from sets and fake backgrounds to VFX.  Maybe in the next decade or two, someone will invent some A.I. filter to better blend the fakery into the real stuff before we run our 120fps export.

All the hate on the R5 and R6, but dang this footage looks better then any other camera in the same price category. I will be over these camera's when the footage can be edited smoothly on my machine, the DR is somewhat improved with CLOG2 and the overheating problem gets fixed with a firmware update (and also a pricedrop, as they are kinda overpriced atm in europe).

Yeah A lot of folks I know bought some laptop/desktops for gaming again during lockdown. But I know one couple that dont own any pc or laptop, they only use iphone which is mindboggling to me how you do everything on your phone. Searching for stuff on my desktop is way more efficiënt then scrolling through my smartphone.

Awesome! Arri is set for another 10 years of camera domininating. Hopefully one day I can afford one.

Also prepare for the following posts:
What no IBIs, what no autofocus, noisy at iso 3200... what a dealbreaker ?

That makes sense about it being about how good the sensors are.  The GH5 sensor must be getting old now..
In terms of colour science, if you're good enough then anything can be made to look like anything, but the problem is that those levels of skill are pretty rare, even amongst professional colourists!
I would also suggest that the pursuit of IQ can be had either by having deep pockets or by being radically inconvenienced - there are some older cinema cameras that look great (for example the F3, BMMCC, etc) but compared to a modern DSLR/MILC they're a royal PITA.

Yes that is true but it does look like that video has that extra tiny bit of mojo though that most other cameras cant provide. If you check comparison videos blindly, you can always pick the alexa out as nicest image. Shooting with an alexa is a bit of a nightmare if you are a solo shooter that used dslrs or smaller cinema cameras though.

I am not sure if you can see the difference between the S5 and S1H in most situations, in some situations like cross patterns or bricks sure the olpf will come out as the winner. But is it worth 2 times the price, I think for 90% of the folks on here it is not. When I said I have not seen any great footage with the s1 line, I was also talking about the S1H.

Film like digital has many looks and this one obviously went for a super16mm look. But one can easily turn off grain, halation and blur and just get the colors with that powergrade. I think grading under a print emulation lut like many pro colorists do helps a lot though to get to something that feels "cinematic" https://juanmelara.com.au

The grain is not as good as on vimeo this is true but if the video is displayed in 4K on youtube it can display grain without it becoming a mushy mess.

The S5 is a great camera and if you want to give it a look that is less digital then I would say add a diffusion filter to the lens like a black promist and color grade in Resolve if you are not doing it already. Since the camera has no AA filter you can then add some gaussian blur to soften the image further in post. There are many great film emulations out there now for purchase that will help you get a filmic look. Juan Melara's Kodak FM 2393 Powergrade, Tom Bolles Cineprint 16 Powergrade and the Dehancer resolve plugin are all great tools at different price points. Color grading is more important than camera choice and you can definitely see differences no matter where it is displayed. Now that youtube displays in 4K on an iPhone film grain looks a lot nicer on phones as well.

Yeah def agree, its part colour science but also too sharp and detailed. Using vintage lenses helps, but for narrative work I would use a proper cinema camera. But the s series is great for company videos and thats what I will use this cam for as it is a faster way of working. (Ibis, small, less weight, pretty good battery life)

While a lot of work, craft and talent has been poured in all the latest videos from the S range cameras I find the footage too "video" for my liking. It is very clean, it has nice  hues but it seems to lack soul...  Just my feeling, I am not bashing on what are clearly excellent cameras. Some of the videos in this thread are great but you cannot help feeling how better they could become due to some more emotive colour science. What is the critical opinion of the S camera owners?

That might help with focus, but monitoring colored footage in b&w does have its downsides like art direction, color casts, weird skintones, ...

It was a disastrous year for an event / wedding shooter like me. I hope that things get better by summer but I don't have a ton of faith after the shit show these last 10 months have been. The way the US has handled this has been utterly embarrassing, and it's not just the government either. The selfishness, greed and ignorance I've seen has been brutal. I always knew it was there, but it has been impossible not to be beaten over the head by it every single day. And those aren't political statements, they're facts to everyone except the deluded cultists of he who shall not be named.

Good riddance to a truly awful year. Here's to a better 2021 for all of us.

It's definitely not a perfect scenario, but if we were shooting in perfect scenarios, we'd all own, or have access to an Alexa. So compromises need to be made. Of course, you are making good points. But I always think something I shoot could end up being B&W anyway, so I like to have a look at the footage in monochrome. With my 5D, I've never had an issue, but I often switch back and forth between color and B&W while monitoring. With the older Panny's I've used, CineLikeD usually had weird skin tones anyway so it didn't matter too much. I assume with their newer cameras and the vLog LUT monitoring, it's much different. All in all, I try not to trust focus peaking too much anyway. I always punch-in before hitting record.

Yeah I hope to shoot again in 2021, as 2020 has been a dud shooting wise. Allthough 2020 was not a bad year for me, got way more time for the family, got to work from home saved me a countless hours of travel/traffic/getting ready.

I do kinda agree with Tom Cruise though, I think you would be pissed off as well, if you are investing millions into a movie, changing heaven and hell to work around the virus and then some people neglect the safety rules, which could end up shutting down the movie, putting a lot of families in financial trouble. I get annoyed as hell from watching TV where the speakers are not respecting the covid rules. Sitting too close togheter, not wearing any masks etc. Its not that hard.. Dont do it for yourself, but do it for your family, your friends, the healthcare, your job. Each infection has the potential to create a new lockdown, its a vicious circle. If everybody just took necessary precautions we would already be out of this mess.

When in the future an even more super deadly virus breaks out, I will not wait on the goverment or anybody else to take action, as it turns out A LOT of people are unresponsible (including friends, family, coworkers, goverment,...). And the only option is to isolate yourself completely. I don't want to sound like a prepper nutjob. But I think everybody can take their own conclusion about human kind in general.
