  1. Two weeks or so passed by since viewing 2049. Watched the original Blade Runner right before that for the first time. The original still sticks with me, whereas 2049 I remember was just worth the ride, but the original left the impression on me: striking faces, colors, sights, mood, change in pace, wonder of whats happening next, getting sucked into the scenes.

Must be connected to 4.2.2 vs 4.2.0 rather than 8 vs 10 bit. Been banging on about this for ages though - nothing wrong with 8bit as long as it's not compressed to hell and has better than 4.2.0 colour. 8bit HDMI out from my Sony A7s/r2 is virtually unbreakable while the internal codec falls apart just looking at it. Still the 'voices' all demanded 10bit above everything else and that's what they got.......

The 420 does not make a big difference, since 422 for 6k would need to be downsampled from around 8k to show a benefit. Banding shows due to the specific implementation of h265.

h265 shows stronger artefacts compared to the h264, which hardly shows any on the gh5.  A7R/S cameras nor any other DSLM don´t have an 18MP video mode with a 200Mbit h265 codec. It´s a matter of processing power, which is required. H264 on the GH5 does not show these problems. Sony FS5 already struggles with internal 10bit HD, that is less than 2MPixel video! GH5 is a technical marvel, showing off whats possible with current mass produced technology.

I’ve had both of those cameras and the FZ2500 is well worth the extra money for what you get. If you don’t mind used or grey market, it can be had for well below $1000. For handheld, run and gun, no budget filmmaking, it’s one of the best cameras on the market.

@mercerand @Matt Kieley, have been considering it for my search:) But colors out of AX2000 represent some 3chip magic, which the Panny cam only might show with some grading tricks. The EX1 like camera body is really something too. For 1000USD one might think about a XC10, which you have also owned before, Glenn:) My bet would be, as a whole package with the three sensor appeal and an progressive image with Canon TI resolution, in a super nice body, the AX2000 would be it, if for something around 600 to 700 USD/EU. Btw, looking for a friend shooting cool stuff, but still on minDV tape in interlaced SD. Sometimes hurts me to see his cool footage interlacing like a beast:) He wants a "real" camera, as he puts it. :)

  4. Hallo Dee Joslin, why not sell the GH5 and buy the AX700, since your preferences are clear.

I think you are super duper wrong about 10bit not showing its advantage. The 8bit SLOG on Sony cams, even on FS700 without update, breaks apart easily.

GH5 has awesome autofocus for photos. As a super exiting camera tool for the making of fiction films, autofocus is not even desired. This camera talks cinema.

I shot this camera at 8bit 1080p REC709 and it gives astonishing results, C300 Mark I quality in a moderatley lit enviroment.

I have a math question too!

Can you have fullframe look from the GH5 with the following terms:

    GH5 in 6K 4:3 mode with Metabones Speedbooster XL = 1,28x crop 4:3

If i add an SLR Magic Anamorphic 1,33x lens to it, will it be a fullframe equivalent field of view (and 16:9) BUT with anamorphic oval bokeh and lens flare?

GH5: 2x crop x boosterXL 0,64x = 1,28. SLR Magic widens the image(?) so the crop factor will be reduced by 1,33 and on the 4:3 sensor the projected image will be 16:9.

So if i do this with a 50mm F1.4 lens it will be 50mm F1.8 in terms of fullframe blur/separation and F0,9 in terms of light transition (+1,33EV with the booster). am i right?

    My view:

1.28for speedbooster x 0.75 for 1.33 anamorph equals factor of 0.96 for field of view of Fullframe Lens.

Light transition will estimate to give 1.28 stop increase due to Speedbooster XL. Blur separation will be F1.4x0.96 equalling F1.344 for a F1.4 full frame lens.

@Charlie, Hey, thanks for the interesting post! The shot outside suggests to be a POV but it does not connect as a POV from the guy inside the building, as it does not seem he is actually looking outside of his window. Also there is nothing to see outside he might be seeking to see. You have other shots to connect to two? It seems to me, the outside shot is not necessary but might rather seem disrupt.

Love the EX1, totally agree with @PannySVHS. I think in AUS we sold one we had for years, for $1500 inc media and batteries. I would still be happy to use that on a job. Nice image and robust body, the only issue is the USB daughterboard that we had to keep replacing, it wasn't a particularly solid part. Massive zoom range though, and nice image, with SDI and all the other niceties that go with a pro body. MPEG2 encoder is a bit of a pain compared to something more modern, but nothing unworkable. If you find a bargain EX3 you might be even better off, you can get a b4 adapter so you can put whatever lenses you want on there!

Yeah, and the follow up, PDW200 with 50mbit 422 codec still costs big bucks. The AX2000 seems neat, though it has three 1MP sensors, while the EX1 sensors offer 2MP each. Bargain EX3, they are still too hot to be consired a bargain:)

If you want shallow DOF and a vintage look on stuff out of a cheap 3ccd, you can always just pick up an old Letus35 lens adapter.  Seriously.  Man, that'll take the edge off, give you nice motion cadence, and look cool doing it.  Goofy way to go, but it works.

What you're alluding to is a real and interesting dilemma.  With even consumer cameras/lenses looking pristine and wonderful, and everyone has 'em, what does one do to differentiate --but still have something that looks nice?

Personally, I absolutely want my IQ to have flaws.  It fits the sorts of stories I like to tell.  Ramshackle and shabby a little, but still well crafted. Slight chroma aberration on the edges of frame?  A smidge of ignetting?  Check and check.  I want the viewer to sense that what they're watching is not "normal."  Thank goodness for the legacy flaws of 24fps!

Now, when I do corporate stuff, I slap on my OlyPro lenses @f4 and 60fps.  Otherwise, let's keep other stories in visual dream-land.

oh, these letus adapters are bulky and make the search less and less of the bargain kind as well:) There have been some 35mm adapters outthere with pretty compact dimensions but not so much info on them nor easy to purchase. Talking about a characteric image, I think the AX2000 might provide that. It´s a DVX100 on roids, plus cards for storage.

@Liam, wow, super lolofi. What can I say. Looking like super nintendo graphics. Good and for sure interesting try, but not perfect :)

  9.

Hey guys, I like the image out of the EX1, which is comparable to a GH2  when it comes to color fidelity and low light performance. That in combination with the super fun pro camcorder body with a nice zoom lens with rings for aperture, focus and zoom. It has NDs, great stabilization, great controls, stupid menu:) Very versatile, fun to use, nice image. And CCD magic, guys! That EX1 mojo with its triple CCD magic:)

Now, finding a EX1 below 1000EU is not possible.  So I started looking for alternatives, which turned out to be either cheap with not convincing image or expensive with a nice image. Speaking of Sony PDW 200, the pimped EX1 here. So I figured, if there might be some HDV camcorder in the great body of an EX1.There are some like a Sony HVR Z5, which can even be used with an additional flash recorder instead of DV Tape. But image didnt convince me enough, too much aliasing going on. So I became to open this thread.

Sony F3 is the ongoing darling of this forum and really tempting. Still not a cheap package with an external rekorder. AF100 has the image of a GH2 in a real camera body. For 500EU it would be tempting. So my question was, if it gives out a better image quality to a recorder, like intraframe 8bit 422. And if it was easy to rig up and use as a shoulder camera for longer shoots.

FS700 with a Shogun is ridicilous in the sense that it is so small and light and that it puts out such a great image, but I don´t like the ergos and price is still prosumer region:)

There was a thread about DVX100 mojo. I look for something like that with a much better image and without tapes, for an amateur auteur price:) I think the most compelling cameras I found in the 3chip category besides the legendary EX1 are Sony AX2000 and Panasonic AC90, the latter still around 1500, though. AX2000 for 500EU would be worth a look for me, it is still runnig for 800 plus. So there are no "cheap" 3CCD or 3CMOS EX1 style cameras. I wouldnt mind trying modern 1inch cams like the X70, but these guys are not cheap at all. That´s why I was looking for alternatives, that and some CCD magic. Though the AX2000 has 3 CMOS chips. But it writes to cards, has a nice and stabilized lens,  has NDs and puts out an appealing image.

    10 hours ago, Liam said:

I'm definitely interested in some older 3 chip camcorders, but the appeal to me might include.. dv tapes, low resolution, some noise. If you want a great, high res, clean image, it might not be the way to go. That just seems like 2 different things to me. Are there other specific features that would make these ideal to you other than charm? They ARE movie cameras as opposed to photo cameras, with a whole different feel using it, so I can respect that of course

Hey Liam, Sony AX2000 might have some appeal:) So far my first pick.

  10.

    Hey guys,

It´s kinda odd, having a Lumix G6 and loving it. Loving the UHD image from my GX85 but not doing shorts with it, having a G7 in the closet laying around. But being intrigued by the AF100. There are some avid AF100 lovers around here. So my question is, if recording external with an Atomos Ninja or better Samurai (SDI) is giving me a better image than the small 28mbit AVCHD files from internal recording?

What are your experiences with making it a shoulder cam, plus external recording, pluc older ENG lenses?

I have also been browsing the net lately for some old school cams. Would love a camcorder with image quality and stabilized lens and body like a Sony EX1. But these still range around 2000EU. Older HDV cam don´t have the image quality of clean progressively recorded frames. Also, it should record to cards. The Sony ZV5 does that to an external Flash recorder and  looks to give a clean noninterlaced image in 1440x1080. Any suggestions for clean 720p or 1080p 3chip camcorders? AC90 from Panasonic looks nice but is also around 1200- 1500 EU.

All these examples have been great and inspired me to get a compact 40 for my newly acquired GH5.  I also noticed another film on YouTube using the Samyang 21 & 50 cine lenses. I really like the feel of these lenses anyway but combined with the anamorphot they look like another great combo.

What are the settings in the GH5 for the Anamorphot? Please be patient with me as I'm extremely new to this format (although I have used Moondogs on my iPhone and iPad). I realise the Anamorphic setting needs to be off but what are the key changes to set up to film with? I will be doing a lot of interviews for a future documentary on English education and so light won't be a problem.

I think, framing, shot design and lenswork is superbly well done from 1.40 on! Really great job, A+ rating.

Before that it does not have that quality, neither regarding framing nor rhythm nor shotdesign, lighting the least:). But from 1.40  really beautifully shot, with true talent and skill. Also showing of the lens very nicely as well :)

the wild places i grew up exploring have burnt. Some of the loveliest places in american wine country are burning and people are dying. Puerto Rico has been destroyed. New Orleans is half the size it was. Climate change is entirely real. People in my country are living it and dying it. There is no debate about it. I don't need a lecture from some ancient austrian economist in a dumb suit to know that the glacier i can see from my house is shrinking. i don't need a fucking documentary liberal or conservative to tell me what i can feel when i step outside, what 99% of scientists agree upon. this doc can go twist for all i care. and so can all these "debaters" enjoy your doom, you made it.

Yeah, I see that point about feeling and actually being lectured without actually being in need of it. Climate change is as real as is the north pole melting. Trailer seems interesting to me, if not as a study, what players are in the field of debate, politics and economics. If not as a study of Canon RAW filmmaking.

  13.

I would like to see this documentary because of the voices themselves, not because of their specific pros and cons regarding climate change. There are more benefits and gains one can get from seeing this. To some it might be the first time they are confronted with this topic in RAW cinematic beauty. Who has watched this film anyhow? Not more people exited about the BTS knowledge, which Andrews article provided?

Also, interesting voices in this movie. As it seems from the trailer, it gives a good overview on players in this field of debate and industry.

I rather watch this movie, instead of just reading an article about it. I would read it afterwards though. Just like I did with Bladerunner 2049 reviews, other than the one from James Bernadelli, which I always have to have a short glance at beforehand:)

Oh, this sounds at first a little bit strict to me. On second thought, thank you very much for opening your suggestion with such kind words. I almost did it again:)  @maxotics , putting the word SPOILER here for those who have not watched the film yet, so spoiler alert!- I thought the same, the killing of the newly born adult replicant was very unpleasant and seemed like a vehicle for Jared Leto only to show off his acting. In general I felt his character was like Stallone in his 80ies flicks, showing off some prowess, not in muscles but in grim looks. Remember when Stallone flexed his muscles in every shot, just like a fitness poser on instagram? :) That´s how I felt about Jared Letos character- just an opportunity to let him give us his wicked looks. Bautistas role at the beginning of the movie on the other hand was a very well written, with a fine performance of his.

That's pretty much the reason I stopped going to the Sony Center kino - it got too much. Yorck Kinos, while smaller, are so much better.

Saw the film last night and really really enjoyed it. The photography is stunning, continues the really good work Deakins has done with Villeneuve over the past couple of films together. Every shot is beautifully put together and it was so refreshing to watch a Hollywood blockbuster taking its time with pacing and mood setting.

Did you watch it on Sunday then, 20.30, Neukölln Arkaden? That´s were I went. I was a little bit annoyed about the emercency lights in the beginning, which were left and the right of the screen. Also, for this movie I would have enjoyed a bigger screen. It´s  a film one might be able to enjoy even more in the privacy of a home theater, close to the large TV screen.

  15.

Watched it today. Have a direct comparision to the original, as I have watched it for the first time right before some friends and me went to

the cinema. The original was very enjoyable as was the recent incarnation. Both with similarities but total different beasts in other ways.

2049 is a real cinematic experience like the first one is. The longer and calmer scenes gave it its own rhythm and tension. Some of the deaths felt not necessary nor helpful

for the story and the film itself. The photography is impressive and must be seen on a big screen. The bigger the better. James Bernadellis review describes

the qualities of this film very well. Visually it´s a masterpiece, plot wise it does fine.

I had the a6500 last year until I got an overheating warning in 40 degree Fahrenheit weather. The camera never shut off, but it scared me so I returned it for a credit... that credit gave me the boost to save up for the 5D3... So I have a soft spot for the a6500 on multiple levels.

As far as CineLikeD... I wouldn’t shoot with any other profile on a Panasonic. The perfect bump in DR and with the underexposure, as @kidzrevil mentioned, the color looks great to me.

guess I´ll have to check myself then:)

    @PannySVHS

A lil thing about Cine D I noticed since it was design for broadcast cameras the curve seems to be optimized for up to 90% ire 95%ire seems to be extra (overshoot) data. It’s not quite highlight compression but color gets ugly above 90% like its gradually losing saturation/data at this point forward going up to 110% ire. This makes sense because not only cant we distinguish texture at this brightness the codec doesn’t prioritize data at this region. Exposing like this you’ll consistently get images that don’t have that ghastly washed out look with the weird skintones we all hate. Thats roughly -2/3 to -1 stop underexposure. The cined and v curves like cinegamma were designed to give us some headroom in post to adjust our midtones.

will check that out, though not so much well looking cineD footage outthere besides yours or some Italian wedding footage with the GH5 in 10bit.

  17.

Kidz´A6500 is the best footage of Sony DSLM night footage I´ve seen, looking like oil paint rather than this akward charcoal look. No banding witnessed there:)

@mercer, weren´t you planning on getting a A6500 yourself? Sorry for the temptation, but you must resist and be strong:) Just had to teaze you a bit:)

CinedD, well, until now I don´t have so much trust in it at the moment. Though there is some awesome but rarely awesome footage shot with it on vimeos clips.

Maybe I should take out my G7, which I have not used at all, and do some CineD filming and give it a try. @kidzrevil, hey kidz, what are the adequate luts for cineD?

Exactly. Exellent comment to an exellent review, with exellent footage from an exellent camera. But bummer, where is the footage :)

  19.

Exellent color but vibe also. Love it, as always! So, your fave profile for G85 is natural rather than Cine D?

Myself, I love natural. I´ve been keeping on regrading some of my older G6 footage. Well graded Panny color is monster!

From your sample it seems, the Panny might be second for certain light situations compared to the sony though. Lookin creamy as heck!

    Lookin forward to seein more.
