  1. Another time I have to agree with jonpais. That 12-60mm Leica glass for MFT has a very sharp look but not the beautiful cinephile pleasing

flavor of beautiful mechanic glass. It rather seems a lens for corporate stuff. Tested it shortly today and was wondering why it was so hard to make footage look cinastiqueeeelicious! :)

In a controlled and lit enviroment I bet I can put out a very unique super futuristic look. A cool, possibly brutal, maybe scifi but so to call very digital look in its own right.

The greatest challenge i want to test is magic hour and golden hour before magic hour.

I dont think a camera with such limited dynamic range and low iso can handle this.

I think, in 99 percent of work...shooting on film is a better idea. Faster film stock. More dynamic range. And just better cameras with optical viewfinders. Now to find a cheap way to scan the negatives that still looks good.

I got a good deal on a dp1x im going to test with.

Ed, you can try a Kodak RFS 2035 or 3570. They are 2000 dpi only but solid built and fast and super fun to play with. Scan some Kodak slides with that and

it´s the faithful way to get them analogue treasures into the digital format:) Use it with Vuescan. It´s an awesome piece of scanning software.

DP1X is very different from the DP Merrill beasts though:)

Why not shoot on a red helium or red weapon to get full frame or a7s ii or any other full frame camera.

    Our linguistic understandings differ.

White priveliege to me is a term of self awareness.

Activism to me can be as simple as signing a petition.

I think maybe you think of activism as work consisting of more than 10 minutes a day of work.

    Let me know your thoughts?

Also im not really a fan of the amira. Nor varicam lt though i havent testsed it personally. About to post a test soon between alexa f65 ursa mini and red helium

It is not a privilegue to be left in peace or to to get equal pay. These are rights. The term privilegue has false implications.

To be in lack of rights is the reality to many people. They don´t long for privilegue but for the most elemental rights. That´s how to name this massive permanent

scandal the world is living in. White privilegue is a term of mass media and cultural appropriators.

Non whites are being surpressed because of their skin color. Nothing about just not being privilegued, it´s about being surpressed.

    About activism:

There are other words for typing interesting and sometimes relevant texts on the internet: typing interesting and sometimes interesting texts..:),

which can be part of activism. Ain´t activisim just yet. Maybe by heart. But that is hard to estimate from the outside.

I would assume you being a dedicated and warm hearted man. I am 100 percent sure, that you are, Ed.

Did you watch "Harlan County USA" from 1976? Massive documentary. Takes a whole billion dollar army of 24/7 of mass media contributors to overpower

pieces like that in their receptive effect. Too small of an audience for these films thanks to the billion dollar players in media.

Current FF offerings lack what a GH5 has to offer as a camera. Don´t like Reds, because I have never tried any.

You have never tried a Varicam LT and sofore don´t like it? :)

There are plenty of valid arguments to be made for President Trump or against President Trump, but that ad hoc attack just keeps the narrative and debate in the whacko realms of the Far Left and Far Right and I would rather hear discussions and points made by the rational center, where most humans reside.

I wouldnt call the whacko far lefts being left at all. They are just whacko. The center of what? There is no measurable middleground to quantify when it comes to ideas.

It´s about their very quality. Different qualities have been adressed to attributes such as left and right and center positioned.

It must be about the attributes themselves. Whackos aint left, neither are self acclaimed social justice warriors. Those are just benefitors of buzz.

The cause of social justice is too important for the people who are in lack of it, too relevant to be exploited by buzz.

And for the question on a the wide-angle adapter for a helious 52mm lens - why not use a full frame camera instead of a GH5?  Or at least the speed booster ultra - and see where that takes you in widening the field of view.

I know panasonic made wide-angle adapters back in the dvx100 era - maybe that could work as well.

:) you tease. Why not use a varicam lt instead of an amira? Current 36x24mm frame cameras have no benefit to me, usability and colors

and adaptability of photo lens gems- these

features are all lacking. I own the lens, a full frame camera I don´t own. What´s the fun with the obvious stuff anyway! :)

The speedbooster is in use already. Andrew wrote an article about a wide angle 0.8 adapter from Richard Gale. But those are not available anymore.

My remark about the ww converter in this your thread was due to the lack of actual support of my original thread, where Hockey and Andrew have

given the best possible replies already in the meantime. So again, combining my 20mm Canon FD with a booster and 0.8 wide angle converter would give

me a 11mm lens, which I would put on my MFT camera. Sharpness at F2.8 will be like F4 on my SLRMagic 12mm and it would have similar

characteristics in color and contrast like my other Canon FD lenses. I am very sure I did not tell you anything new here ;)

About your topic: A human right is not a privilegue. Lack of human rights is result of the worst crimes such as

racism and chauvinism, a lot of times even legalized. These are in my opinion the meaningful terms to deal with.

The term of white privilegue is one of white washing:) and generalizing

specific guilt of specific individuals, laws, actions, governing, companies and processes in the political, economical and financial systems.

Have you watched the documentary "Harlan County USA"? This is awesome filmmaking.

Social activism is hundreds of years older than us and has been a very dangerous encounter and it still is in some places.

So I wouldnt call internet posts social activism just yet. Language is powerful, to non native speakers as well. They understand the difference

between one term and the other, the possibility of expresseing one thing and lacking in expressing the other.

No.  You can take great photographs with any camera.  But almost all serious "model" photographers use Nikon or Canon full-frame, if not medium format if they can afford it.   Not Sigma, they're too slow.  That's a fact, take from it what you will :)  Sigmas appeal to two types of photographer in my experience.  1) The ones who come from film and are very fussy about color (though Foveon has trouble with red).  2) photographers who are super picky about printing and deplore bayer color artifacts.  The question for you would be is full-frame good enough that you don't need that extra clarity of a Sigma?  So, I suggest you borrow/rent a full-frame and try it out.  Even an old one.  If you don't see a difference between that and your GH5 then I'm fairly certain you'd find the Sigma camera a complete frustration.  As much as I love the Sigma look, if size/weight isn't a factor, a Nikon D810 is close enough for me.  IF I want something small with the best look possible, and I can take my time, then Sigma is the way to go.

But Max, I dare you!:) Browsing through the Merrill pictures on Flickr reveals some breathtaking images. A Merrill in combination with its fixed lens is a winner in price image ratio,

you cannot reach with a D810. But speed, easy of use, flexibility and high iso are fair trade offs, of course. I think Merrills are putting out a nicer image than the Quattros.

  8. Ed , there is  one main benefit to me in replying to your interesting post: to engage in a conversation with you.

Your rarely reply to me. The only benefit in replying to your posts comes into doubt by lack of feedback from your side.

If I directly adress guys like you or mercer or jonpais, it is because of interest in you guys and your opinions, for me it is not about writing for the internet.

A human right is not a privilegue. The denial of human rights is an act of violence.

One does not do human rights a favour by proclaiming them as privilegue.

3 million dollars for 1000 workers sounds little compensation. Should have been 30 million.

  9. Foto Braune has the Pentax 28mm f2? That Hollywood has to wait:)  I was hoping, my sample of Oly Zuiko 28mm F2 would cut it.

But it is worse at F4 than my Canon 28mm F2.8 is with open aperture. Foto Braune said to me, the Zuiko is supposed to be the Hollywood design.

A German forum has nothing but praises for it and its floating element. Those guys are real nerds. Guess, I got a rather average sample then.

Btw, why did you have to write that pentax article back then? Prices have been going through the roof since then!:)

Good wide angle adapters are quite rare but it's always worth checking the usual places in Berlin like Foto Braune, Foto Mayer and others who stock used stuff.

The only good one I have ever used (unless you count anamorphic Panasonic LA7200!) has been the Dog Schnidt Optiks FF38.

You might want to contact Rich Gale and see if he can sell you one. It's very good Schott glass.

    http://www.eoshd.com/2015/02/dog-schidt-optiks-ff58-flare-factory-58-pl-mount-review/

I shot this footage with it on the front of his FF58 which is based on the Helios 44-M 58mm F2

I have it in Berlin but since I've only got one and I don't want to sell it as it was a gift from Richard, you're out of luck there Panny :)

Massive post, Andrew! Thanks! Richard gave one to you, awesome! That seems to be a 0.66 converter then. Unfortuntely Richard doesnt seem to build his

classics anymore but rather classy highend cinema products.

Andrew, you know, since your GH4 review, I have been joking with my back then girlfriend that she would have to stay by herself if I met

    you at Mauerpark:)

Foto Braune, was there last Friday, talking for one hour. He has a beautiful Soligor 28mm 2.0 there in Konica AR mount,

so not for speedbooster use. Still looking for the perfect 28mm for less thant 200 EU. The Oly Zuiko does not seem to be it, if going from my sample.

You don´t have an Easyrig laying around, catching dust? :) Guess, I gonna have to rent one from Dino.

Anyway, I am very happy that you and HockyFan two took my approach seriously and honoured it with beautiful replies.

Thank you, guys! cheers, love and thread closed!

You threee posters above are worth of what you might consider my insult. Or maybe you don´t deserve my harsh attack:

You four! posters above have been ignoring my quest for specific support!

I understand you, being ashamed of not being able to provide knowledge about good wide angle adapters! :)

Nothing to be ashamed of, saying: "Panny, I cannot help you on wide angle adapters. These converters are

not supposed to be used by the high end user of sophisticated taste." That would be much better than being quiete about it.

You five! posters are of sophisticated taste! That was my insult.

@Ed_David, It was in the beginning era of Skinhead movement, when Jamaican immigrant kids gave them poor working class kids Ska and Soul music,

they were brothers and sisters! Solidarity and cool music. Racsim later infiltrated that proud and powerful youth movement and life style. Pride was pushed towards

the matter of skin tone. In "Harlan County USA", the oscar winning doc filmmaker and her team show a lot of stuff, which might be

from another culture than yours. It shows blackness of coalminers, there is no skin color as a dividing but unifying factor.

The discourse of white guilt is one of ruling class to equalize responsibility

for the crimes of the past and the future. Since whiteness can never be overcome, so shall not be the social, economic and

judical differences. Whiteness and white privilegue are hypocrite terms of a hypocrite racist and chauvinist strategy to

rule above and exploit others. Punk went from the US to Europe, got political, went back to the US, went to GDR, to Poland,

to the USSR, all which are called Eastern Block now! There is a lot of stuff, the term white privilegue neglects. On purpose.

On purpose. Believe me. They do it on purpose! Oh, my diction is getting it wrong now, thought it was being my trump:)

Ed David is an awesome name, I call that a true privilegue! :)

  12.

Hallo, thank you very much! That is very reasonable. I could put an 0.8 on my FD20mm. But for thread 72mm they are rare enough.

That combined with a Chinabooster and its factor 0.71 would give me a factor of around 0.57, giving me around 11.5mm on MFT.

I was hoping for some quick way to find a less rare 0.5 for 52mm or 55mm thread. Silly me, I know so little due to limited access to lenses

and lack of optical theory and knowledge! :)

No easy way into the lens owning game. I like my 28mm better than the 20mm regarding tactility and ergonomy.

No easy way into the lens operating game neither:)

Adam Wilt's tests and comments were well worth reading, thanks! Taken in combination with what I've seen, I'm pretty confident they're a solid set of true cine lenses. If all lenses performed as well as these do, lens reviewers would probably be out of a job!

Hey Jon, I read Noams article a few days ago due to cinegains recommendation. These Veydras look tasty indeed. The affordable Rokinon models look boring

from the outside:) And they have a rather cheap tactile feel, though focussing is smooth, as is their aperture wheel.

That SLRmagic 12mm version I is indeed a soft sucker, as you stated. I didnt wanna believe you, but it is at F4 when it is starting to considerably sharpen

up and becoming nice. Would shoot it at 2.8 for macro and distorted POV stuff. Still a fun lens, making me want a 12mm native prime with nice T 2.0 or

2.2 or 2.5 performance or a 17 or 18mm 2.8 or 3.5 speedboosted with nice performance wide open. Still not buying that Leica 12mm. :)

Oh heck yes, that Laowa 7.5mm is looking tasty!

On 16.8.2017 at 8:09 PM, mercer said:

Grab a Veydra in your favorite focal length and write a 1-3 minute short, or adapt a public domain short story, with 1 or 2 actors.

I would use your street shooting skills as part of the production.

If you want to go lightweight and handheld, I saw a cheap, rail-free, follow focus that could help with the Veydra's focus throw to keep a simple set up.

And a Black Pro Mist 1/4! You need some Black Pro Mist just like I need myself some cowbell!:)

By the way, watched GX85 HD footage, shot with my FD50mm F1.4 at 5.6 at 8, on a large screen with a nice 8000 EU projector, the aliasing

with that high resolving Canon lens in hair and skin pores was fugly, digital brutality, so to say. So for the pure beauty of the image, HD for

big screen is to be avoided on the GX85. It was with -5 for noise and sharpness.

  14.

Are wide angle adapters boring to you? I find their notion attractive. It can make an awesome FD 28mm into a wider one.

My SLR magic 12mm version I is actually rather useful to be shot from F4 on, F2.8 is still to blurry for combining it with

high resolving vintage lenses such as the FD 28 or FD 50. Also, changing lenses of the same FD mount  means,

sensor is protected by the glass of the focal reducer, which can be very comforting in challenging shooting situations.

So, what´s up, no more nerdom going on here this month? Nor nerdom support when it comes to lending stuff?

Forget the GH5, easyrig would be great enough and a Pinza :)

We have a thread on privilegue. I would enjoy the privilegue of your support.

    cheers,

    Marty

  15. hey ppz,

so, some specific support for the underpreviliged in knowledge, that would be me :)

Any awesome wide angle adapters 0.5x factor in 52 or 55 or 58 thread? So far, over 70 readers of my original post but no one sharing knowledge:

Also, no Berliners around here showing some love and lending some equipment?

  16. Hey cats!

I am in need of some specific and very direct act of support.

An answer to my question from my thread I posted yesterday.

What is the best 0.5x wide angle adapter for 52 lens thread?

Also, if some Berlin residents could support with lending two Pinza clamp lamps 250-500W for three days

or an Easyrig as well, how about a GH5 so I can avoid the nasty battery life of my GX85.

That is the groovy thing about having stuff and blessings, sharing it, and may that be knowledge.

@Ed_David, @Andrew Reid, you guys know a trick for a nice 0.5x ww adapter? :)

    Hey guys,

I am a lousy, lousy camera nerd. Testing lenses, testing ergos- that 28-85mm F4 Tokina has the best ergos of any photo lenses I have had in my hand,

maybe the vivitar 35mm 1.9 is a challenger. But, I missed out on other important stuff for my upcoming shoot of a shortfilm next weekend.

    1. I don´t wanna change between FD speedboosted lenses and my SLRmagic 12mm, want to leave the 12mm out of the shoot.

So, looking for the best 0.5 wide angle adapter in 52mm thread for my FD 28mm. Which one would that be?

    2. Any of you guys are residents in Berlin I could pick up some Pinzo lights from, or some handy clamp lights with a mount for at least 250W tungsten bulbs?

Easyrig anybody? Wireless follow focus anyone? GH5 to borrow from? Aaaaarggh!:)

    cheers n out,

    Marty

Yes, a very beautiful lens. Just a very short focus throw with very sudden and hard stops at both ends:)

I compared it to the 28mm FD at the wide end. The Canon was even a little bit better resolving wide open, due to being a prime.

That little Canon cost me 20 EU on ebay, if I recall right. One of the greatest lenses in price image ratio I know.

Both the Tokina and the Canon are better at 2.8 than the pricey Olympus Zuiko 28mm F2.0.

Have you shot with the Tokina? I have a soft spot for lens testin footage. Mind to share some, cats and flowers allowed :)
