Finally shot a short film of my own this weekend. Playing with the grade in DaVinci while my wife begins the edit it in her cutting room. EVA1, V-Log, Kowa B&H, Rectilux 3FF-W, Voigtländer 40mm f/2 taking lens.

I would prefer a 5'' over a 7 inch for anything even remotely run & gun

With more and more cameras providing increased capabilities for recording via their HDMI or SDI ports, the value of external recorders has increased - the GH5 provides 4K 60 422 10bit only via HDMI; the FS5 provides 4K 30P RAW, 4K DCI 120P from RAW, and 240P 2K from RAW; the EVA1 also has increased capabilities like 240P 2k output; and the tiny RX0 provides 10bit 422 4K via HDMI.
But we only have 7"-screen recorders, which are absurdly large even for the bigger, but still portable cameras. On the EVA1, for example, the Shogun Inferno looks ridiculous, adding bulk and imbalance, as the attached photo shows.
Please, (anyone) give us a 5" recorder with the capabilities of the Shogun Inferno, or even better, a smaller recorder without any screen - the battery life will be better and overheating will be less of a problem. BlackMagic? Convergent Design? Atomos? Video Devices? Sony? C'mon.
I actually do not find the Shogun Inferno screen useful even for shooting for HDR - if you go into Atomos HDR mode, the screen becomes very dim and almost impossible to see in bright light. I basically just use the waveform (which is useful, but that does NOT need a 7" screen).

Yeah many people do it like this, as having a bit of noise reduction in the first node can also lead to cleaner keys.

Neat Video is THE defacto industry noise reduction plugin worth every cent they charge for it. I would rather purchase Neat Video than buy another LED light. 
My process is to first run an instance of Neat Video, than grade the footage, then add a very subtle instance of noise to further help with dithering. In most applications, I don't need the noise instance to help smooth out banding and artifacts because Neat Video takes care of most, if not all of it. The noise layer is mostly psychological for me because that's how I took care of business before Neat Video came along. I seriously doubt a manufacture could script a NR algorithm in-cam on the fly with the power the NV delivers. 

For the banding removal mentioned earlier, when you have massive banding, it can be useful to add grain and then apply temporal noise reduction. I applied a very strong grade to one of my X-T2 F-Log clips here, to show some nasty banding (view in full size):

Then I created a mask for the sky in Resolve, applied some heavy grain and then some heavy temporal noise reduction in Resolve's denoiser, and voilá. Obviously this will only work if you can mask out the problematic area and if there's no real detail there.

Last time I had one of my GH5Ss outside it was plenty bright. To the point where I couldn’t see my external SmallHD monitor which is daylight viewable. There was snow, grass and lots of sunlight. I recorded in VLogL and had no trouble getting good highlight roll-off. Have you used this camera? The ‘S’ might look like the GH5... but they are very different cameras. 

Yes, the GH5 itself has the worst rolloff of the bunch. The S has good clipping correction, and I intend to bring the accelerated Alexa style rolloff to the S in the future (need to get a hold of one for measurement)

on the 1st, he is going to upload the hack. We will install it, only to find when we turn the camera back on, it is playing a rick astley video on loop.

With DPREVIEW:
- The EOS M50 offers 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but not at the same time. Is there a technical reason for this limitation?

Color separation indeed is great using V-log. With HLG it's kinda lacking...
