From all the videos published so far it seems pretty obvious that overall the A7SIII will perform better with overheating but can still overheat especially in 4K120P. I do not think it will be an issue for most in real world.

The R5 is where the big question stands, will it be usable for most (we already know it won't work for productions or people needing long recording).

If the R5 proves to be usable (I ordered day 1 and will report my tests) that's the keeper for me. I am 60% photo 40% video at the moment so those 45mpx are important. Also the IBIS is world appart.

The A7S blows the R5 in low light (expected)
The R5 beating the A7S in rolling shutter? I did not expect that.
That IBIS comparison though... Sony is years behind on that.
And the R5 beating the Sony in overheating outside? Sounds almost weird..!

So 30min before overheating in 4k120p and 1.1 crop. Should we sue Sony? Lol.

Joke appart I like that the 4K60p is good to go without overheating and that it’s full pixel readout and doesn’t need crazy expensive memory cards.
However 12mpx for stills is not enough for me, so I would have to keep my A7III. Not as good as having everything in one with the Canon. Not to mention poor IBIS.
Yet if the Canon cannot record a min of video after you shoot 30 pics....
So what I am gonna do is I’ll keep my R5 order, test it in my real world usage and if it’s unusable I’ll return it and if it ends up being fine I’ll happily keep it. It’s perfect cause it’s summer now. If I can shoot pictures and small 20 seconds 4K120p clips for 3H straight outside then it’s a go. If not then I guess it’s gonna be another 5 years before I get my dream camera lol.

I have to admit I was fine with recording only 15 min STRAIGHT of 4K120p, but not being able to record 1sec after 1 hour shooting still, or not being able to record more than 15 x 1min clips in a single day becomes from « ok I’ll deal with it » to « what the actual fuck?? »

You are quoting my messages out of context days appart.... good for you. I have no pbm assuming the fact that I change my mind according to the new information coming in. Neither you and I tested the camera so we for now rely on others.
15-20min max continuous recording in 4K120P was totally acceptable to me.
The new information saying you cannot record 1 second after shooting 30 pictures is not acceptable.

My first comment, based on your comment with information that was available at the time of posting and with the unrelevant exemples you posted  is still 100% valid.
BTW you are the champion of flip flopping, how many times did I read an article here on EOS HD saying a camera is pure garebage, then you actually buy it use it and love it lol. And you know what that’s fine. As we say in French, only dumb people never change their mind. 🙂

DEALBREAKER ALERT. A 15000$ 2020 MAC PRO cannot play back in real time the R5 footage. Does not matter Premiere Pro Resolve, FCPX. Nothing works even 4K30p won’t play in a high end 2020 MacbookPro.
The reason which he does not say in his video but I know is 422. HVEC is supported by latest hardware but not HVEC 422 so it’s like at the beginning of the HVEC codec when hardware acceleration was not supported.
Your 15K computer cannot edit the footage, but within a year or 2 when computers support 10 bit 422 HVEC correctly a 1000$ laptop will edit it better than your MacPro. In the meantime, we are screwed.

The exemples in your article are absolutely pointless. You say the overheating scandale is like if a car would overheat and stops on the highway so you compare features that exist in any competition product for dozens of year (a car going on the highway, all cars can do that) with a ground breaking features of the R5 that exist nowhere on the market. No camera this size and price in the world today shoots 4K120P full frame 10 bit 422. It’s unheard off.
A7RIV, the Sony flagship, does not overheat because its only video mode is the R5 normal 4K mode, which doesn’t overheat at all, yet on top the Canon has 10 bits and still beats BY FAR the A7RIV with just the non overheating normal 4K mode (10 bits, better ibis, better colors, better ergonomics).
So to take your exemple, it’s like having the best car on the market on most points, and have an extra bonus boost mode that gives you 0-100kmh in one second but only usable for 20min.
Guess what? It exists and it’s called Ludicrous mode on tesla, a $20K option and that overheats the car after a few accelerations.... Nobody sued Tesla and people paid for that option on the Model S.

My main concern is the 4K120p file size. Why on earth no IPB at 1/3 the file size like ANY other modes including 8K. WTF...
Yeah Sony will have a better sensor like usual, better DR in stills, best of both world with the dual mpx of quad bayer, like having an R6 and R5 together. BUT ergonomics might be worst, color science might be worst, please of use and menus might be worst, and IBIS might be worst. I did not care for those when Canon was delivering 0 on other specs, but now that Canon delivers on specs those Sony issues cannot be ignored.

Yeah it happens a lot that I film slow mo but play some clips real time and then need the audio. Also sometimes I use the audio in real time over the slowmo video (for background sounds like water and so on)

The firmware update says « lower bitrate IPB for all framerates » HOPEFULLY that means IPB for 4K120 (currently only ALL-I with very high bitrates which forces Cfast use) and that would address 1 out of 2 complains I have. The 2nd one being no audio in 4K120.

Well my first ever camera was a 450D, and then a 5DII and 5DIII. I did not like what direction Canon took from the 5DIII and I liked what other brands brought on the table the past few years. I have also owned the EM1, the GH3,4,5, multiple Fujis and Sonys. I think Sony deserves props for how they launched the FF mirrorless movement to what it is today. Canon is getting back in the race with a great set of cameras and deserve props for that.

Cameras are just 2 things for me: a tool so I like to have the best tool for the task so I don't mind changing system if I feel a brand is proposing a tool better suiting my use. Secondly, I love tech and appreciate testing and trying new things thus why I explore many different camera options over the years.
True, I speak out loud and sometimes my point of views are extreme...

Anyway I do agree if 12mp only and not quad bayer, they are in trouble. Not nearly enough to counter R5. Sure for specialize work (video only, interview filming,...) it might be a better buy than the R5. But I believe for a majority of people the R5 will be a much better overall hybrid. Let's not forget all the historic Canon advantages I and Sony users had to close our eyes on for years (ergonomics, colors...) rightfully so because other specs were much better. Will we close our eyes on those now that Canon matches/exceed the good stuff (frame rates, no crop FF, 10 bit, flippy screen...)? Absolutely not.

I hope for Sony the 12mp rumor is a quad bayer 12/48mpx, that they integrated Venice color science, that they upgraded the touch screen and menus and they upgraded the IBIS. If not, I wish them good luck for the next 2 years.
Even for the low end battle, who will buy a A7IV for $2000 when they can get a R6 for $2500 should they both do 4K60p 10 bit, 20-24mpx with the Canon having better IBIS / colors body / ergonomics and being a Canon? The 3 dudes who need 5 hours recording time yet don't use the right Cinema camera tool for the job certainly will. For the rest of us though....
