Inazuma reacted to Andrew Reid in Bought a Fuji GFX 100
A good deal on an open box one came up so I snaffled it.
Before I am officially bankrupt and have to sell EOSHD to Cinema5D, at least I get to shoot some medium format 4K
    Here is the plan...
I got a bit frustrated waiting for the X-H2, with the will-it-won't-it exist situation.
    I have the X-T3, X-Pro 3, X-H1, X-Pro 2, all really are too similar. Why do I have 4? I don't know. I am an addict and need help.
I'll sell all those and GFX 50S, which depreciated in price like a bastard. Going to sell it for about £2800, which at least goes toward funding the GFX 100.
It's a terrible time to buy a new camera. So much on the horizon. But it's all full frame or APS-C. Yes the EOS R5, 1D X III, X-H2 if we ever see one, A7S III will be on my radar and will definitely shoot with them and review them on EOSHD... But they're not medium format! Do I need another similar camera to the ones I already have? Or sell em all and get something truly special...
The look is different on the GFX 100 and it is a unique in the world one of a kind camera in 2020. Ok, the amazing 4K image may trickle down to a lower priced 50R II or something like that... But before that happens I will make sure I get out quick because I do not want to end up with a GFX 100 that is worth £3k on eBay.
Until then, I'll enjoy the wonder that is the GFX 100 and wait to see if the EOS R5 is all its cracked up to be. Will the 8K be any good? Will it shoot 10bit? Will it have RAW? Or are we in for a disappointment? The GFX 100 is certainty of high-end video features and 10bit with superb Fuji colours, and it's here right now.
Fast apertures and full frame lenses on medium format are a real pleasure too... I love the look and it's never been seen before a mirrorless medium format camera arrived. Those swirly edges remained a mystery.
    And yes... I need help!

This camera is basically a DSLR version of the Canon M6 Mark II, which is a camera I've owned for the past several months. It's actually a terrific camera. Not a spec monster but does most things right. Good ergonomics, good colour, good DR and low light ability, microphone jack, sharp 1080p, sharp-enough 4k with low rolling shutter, good lens selection. I actually prefer this camera over the Fuji X-T30 that I owned previously.
So if you  have bigger lenses like the 17-55mm f2.8 then you'll have yourself a great camera to use it with if you get the t8i.

I like the compact size, but that grip is terrible. After using a friend's XT3 I found the grip to be terrible. It's not just that it's small, there's no lip above the middle finger so when held in one hand all of the weight is supported by friction alone. I looked into grip attachments, but they all just add more mass to the grip, none actually add that contoured lip that rests on your fingers. I looked into designing and printing my own, but the placement of the shutter release means that even with a small contoured grip, your index finger has to contort to get to the shutter. It's probably fine for a lot of people, but 8 hours into a hike and I'm climbing a rock to get a shot, that little lip is so much more comfortable and secure.
Long story short, that design is an absolute deal breaker for me.

Be aware that the rules are different for different countries.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries'_copyright_lengths#Copyright_durations_by_country
In the US, for anything made before 1978, it is 95 years (so anything 1925 and older is now public domain) but for post 1978 it is now the life of any of the authors plus 70 years.
That 1978 split throws up some interesting anomalies when you look at the music of John Lennon for example and his two number one records "Imagine" and "Woman".
"Imagine" was 1971 so is pre the change so has the 95 years protection and won't expire until 2066.
"Woman" was 1980 so is post the change so now only has 30 years left as Lennon was killed the same year and expires in 2050, which is sixteen years prior to a song that came nine years earlier.
In the UK, which doesn't have the same 1978 split but does have the "70 years after the last author dies" rule, there is an even bigger anomaly with Lennon due to his work in The Beatles.
If you look at a John Lennon solo track like "Working Class Hero", then due to his death in 1980 that only has another 30 years to run, whereas something he wrote for The Beatles with Paul McCartney a few months earlier like "Let It Be" , still has 70 years plus however long McCartney lives for.
So the solo track expires in 2050 whereas the co-written one is going to be at least 2090.
For years, McCartney has been trying to get Yoko Ono to do a deal where they would change the joint Lennon&McCartney credit to whichever of the two of them actually wrote the song. I'm presuming this is because many of The Beatles' songs that McCartney wrote such as "Let It Be" and "Yesterday" are covered far more frequently than Lennon ones such as "Strawberry Fields" or "I Am The Walrus" so he wants what he sees as a fairer slice of the cake.
Yoko has always resisted this, I'm guessing not only because it would be a sizeable and immediate financial hit but also because the joint authorship with one surviving writer in the partnership will alive will keep The Beatles royalties coming in for the Lennon family for far longer.
As @Emanuel says those rules for films (in the UK at least) meaning that the clock doesn't start ticking until the Writer, Director and Soundtrack Composer have all died will keep a lot of films covered for quite some time.
If you look at "Driving Miss Daisy", the Best Picture winner at the 1990 Oscars, as an example, the Writer, Director and Soundtrack Composer are all still alive so that is now guaranteed to have a minimum 100 year run.
The 1980 winner "Kramer vs Kramer", still has all three alive as well so that is going to be a minimum of 110 years.

A while back I posted a tutorial on film emulation and recreating halation and grain in a realistic way. I recently came out with a new video that goes over it in a better, more concise way.
I see quite a bit of people asking how to achieve the look of film and it's characteristics so hopefully this video can help them out!
A big thanks to the Lift, Gamma, Gain forums for figuring a lot of this out also feel free to share your results and download the PowerGrades I've provided on my website!

    I bought the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 and the EF 17-40mm f4
The adapter weights 140g and the lens is about 480g, so together it's just over 600g. It does look a bit odd but it feels alright due to the M6 having a decent grip for a small camera.
Build quality of the adapter is good. There's no play on either end and it's not too tight either. It feels solid yet is quite light (most speed boosters are over 200g).
The autofocus works really well. Pretty similar to the native 22mm, just a little noisier. It can be heard in video if the room is silent but otherwise it's not a problem.
Central sharpness is good. Edge is poor up until f8.
Weirdly, the edge sharpness at 40mm is worse than at 17mm.
Overall the adapter makes a great cheapskate option for full frame but I've realised it's a bit surplus to my requirements right now so im returning it. And with lenses like these it's better to have a camera with a bigger grip.

I am not American, and I think Trump says the strangest things. But, he is arguably the most successful US president of all time. I may not be a Trump fan, but I prefer him over both the Clintons, Obama and many others. Obama getting the Nobel for farting in his dreams was way more shady than anything else. EVER.
The US has been heading for a financial collapse for the last few years (since the Dollar Store and Wallmark rise). Now China is literally taking away millions of US jobs and Fortune 500 is inundated with Chinese Companies. Apple would have been relegated to 4th or 5th position in smartphone sales, if the US wasnt doing all the shady stuff it is (to be fair, US Trade and IP Laws have been anything but fair since they were created). Also TikTok and other chinese tech startups are going to be displacing Twitter and Facebook (even though it doesn't do similar things to either) very soon. That's why Google is planning a TikTok ban soon (if it hadn't already).
Europe and the US are heading for both economic and cultural collapse. The only question, I guess, is how quickly.

    From John Gruber (Daring Fireball):
“This is how Apple chose to unveil the packaging for the Mac Pro — in a poorly-shot overexposed propaganda video by the White House, scored with bombastic music that sounds like it came from an SNL parody of a Michael Bay film. Think about how it feels to work on that team at Apple.”
“A low moment in Apple’s proud history, and a sadly iconic moment for Tim Cook. I hope avoiding those tariffs is worth it.”
    BEAUTIFULLY GRADED!
Apple’s latest ad is a brave new direction for the Cupertino tech giant’s brand.
To celebrate, I have created the EOSHD Tim Apple LUT.
The favoured look of the US President is perfect for factory tour videos or nationalist propaganda.
The LUT has a muted, washed, bleached contrast with no life and no joy in it. So if that’s what your scene demands, be sure to use the EOSHD Tim Apple LUT today.
