What Sony and Nikon models are you looking forward to?

MFT lens won't cover the APS-C sensor, right?

The A7sIII could be interesting if Sony gets the color science right and it has some form of raw, it may even have a global shutter. There's rumors of pro-spec Sony and Nikon APS-C bodies.

I did a little reading on the reduser forums and people there believe that P6K upsets more P4K owners than anyone else.

The possibility of having a 6K sensor is great, but in reality it can be a burden for budget and feature consious users which P4K owners are (so many features for so little money!).

What do P4K owners think? Do they have to update? Do they need to? What's your impression now that P6K are already available while some people are still waiting for their backordered P4Ks?

I have no interest in the P6K. The problem I've found with speed boosters is they sometimes need fine backfocus adjust for individual lenses. I'm using a $180 Vilrox adapter and getting very good results once it's dialed in properly, so I'm going to get a couple more. For $540 extra, my P4K is just as capable as the P6K. For the cost of a P6K I'm looking for features like DPAF in particular, that's why I have my eye on the Sigma FP and upcoming Sony and Nikon models. Just hoping Apple whoops ? and  frees internal raw for the masses.

Of course I am exaggerating, or maybe not?

No, you're not. This thread reminded that I needed to retweet a message from a guy who has been locked up in an Australian government concentration camp for the past 6 years due to the color of his skin. If toxic masculinity in the nuclear age doesn't finish us off fast, climate change will do us slowly (not that slowly). The sociopathy of greedy rich men and their worshipers is one hell of a doomsday device. RED and its fanboys are the least of our problems, but it's all relative.

SIDENOTE: My pontification (JUST MY OPINION):  Jared's reponse to apple v red doesn't make sense to me.  Why is it standard operating procedure for a giant TECH company , Apple, the largest tech company I think in the world, to invalidate another's camera's best feature when this may likely take away any advantage they have and in essence, severely hurt the camera company's future?

    Lipstick on a pig.

Anyway, I'm off to 3D print a new irony meter as my current one has just exploded.

Remember that time Andrew dissed Blackmagic, and the Blackmagic fanboys said "Blackmagic needs to take this guy down"? Na, me neither.

    It's definitely not a cult. ?

  5. Animosity towards RED management and the RED community is nothing new, it's been going on since Moses was a boy. A lot of it stems from the actions of said people. Filmmakers have a right to be upset about a patent that may or may not be valid, and is certainly something that many in the film community don't believe should exist. it may be legal to deny the struggling indie filmmaker access to internal raw recording, but it certainly isn't cool. It pays to remember we live and work in a community where one day you can be sleeping in your car, and the next you're making Hollywood features (James Cameron). If that turns out to be me, I know what cameras I won't be shooting with.

If Nikon, Sony, and Panasonic have to pay more for licensing, it will ultimately come out of the filmmakers pocket.

They'll be free to develop their own flavor of raw.

Have a look at Phil Holland's behaviour over at Red User against me.

Agitating to get me sued again by RED.

It's harassment pure and simple, already started.

    It's not a cult but. ?

Welcome to the forum. Likewise I've been reading your posts on twitter for quite a while. Great stuff.

My opinion is that ProRes RAW is at the centre of things for now. I suspect RED would have forced Apple into challenging their patent, after telling Apple they were violating it.

I'd like to learn more about it, including what the consequences are for RED is their key patent if it is successfully challenged and annulled.

Your theory about Apple wanting to buy RED would make sense but they would need to do their due diligence on the company. And perhaps read this thread.

Apple can smell blood in the the water. A win for Apple allows Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and the rest to license ProRes raw for internal recording. That's a lot of licensing revenue and a lot of FCPX sales. And a lot of happy filmmakers. ?

That is ridiculous. Basically what he is saying is that equipment to do compressed raw over 2k was not practical at the time. It is obvious that it could be done however, and would be once technology had advanced to the point where it could handle the bandwidth involved. How on earth did this get past the PTO?

    In a brown paper bag?

  9. The big advance in 2019 is Japanese manufacturers adopting raw video in one form or another (it only took them 10 years). There's talk of Sony working on a new codec which one would assume is some incarnation of raw developed for the A7S III.

I'm hanging to see the final specs on the Sigma FP; Sigma has added APS-C lenses to the lens graphic on the FP product page, whether it's an APS-C crop or an option remains to be seen, as does the cDNG spec: compression ratios? Rolling shutter? Sigma makes some great lenses and is one of the few manufacturers that still builds AF lenses with actual manual control over the manual focus mechanism ?.

Canon: ? You can forget about Canon doing anything but rolling out the same tired old shit; Canon will be the last company to adopt raw video for its consumer line and it will do it kicking and screaming.

The Pocket 4K is pretty good, but a Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, or a Sigma with raw, IBIS, 14 stops, and DPAF like AF will be dreamy.

I wouldn’t want to judge until I saw in the context of moving images. But based only on those screenshots I’d probably still meet them halfway with more saturation. Maybe not half but closer.

At the end of the day, what does it matter to you? They’re paying for it. If they want fake tan skin, give it to them. Perhaps you could respectfully share your concerns, but if they want what they want, gladly give it to them.

You can always create a version for your reel colored exactly the way you like it.

What Jonesy said. The bluer sky looks good, I'd just tone down the orange a bit.

Can't say that this unwieldy beast of a $2500, plastic "pocket" camera does anything for me. The Sigma FP is mighty interesting though.

A 4K micro with or without a 3.2" LCD and a NPF battery mount would've been a much more attractive proposition. Who needs 6K? I just made the leap from 1080p to 4K and the first thing I did was slap a Black ProMist filter on it to take the edge off.

  12. Is the blue blue sky macroblocking included or is it a paid upgrade?

Chances are the Sigma FP will be around the same price, albeit with larger file sizes. I'm leaning towards the Sigma, I'm not loving the P4K form factor and necessity for an external battery. I still can't even buy a decent loupe for the damned thing!
