Wish there was an option to intentionally put it into low power mode.

It is more the fragility of a USB connection I wonder about?

In a bag it should never be an issue. A USB-A powerbank does the intentional trick good enough. I carry a spare usb cable and spare AAs just to be on the safe side. What I don't like about the Sony NP-F battery sled option is it won't fit in a bag, unless you get the hirose sled and hook that up to an external Sony sled, which would cost quite a bit more than a usb powerbank. I paid about $60 for mine, and it came with free jump start leads for the car.

One of the main reasons I got the MixPre3 is for run & gun productions, so I want a robust setup. Skeptical if USB powering would do that for me. Also that battery you've got seems like overkill? (should last you for 2+ days I'm betting??) I'm wanting this as lightweight as possible!

I'm using a USB powerbank with my MixPre 6. It's in an old (perfect fit) portabrace bag with a right angle usb-c cable attached. I can't see how it could get disconnected, but if it did the Mixpre6 automatically switches back to the AAs. I could gaff the right angle usb-c cable in place, but haven't felt the need to. It's a smaller USB-A powerbank, so only operates in low power mode: 1-2 48v phantom powered mics.

What resolution/crop are we talking about here? Because even now as I google it, everywhere I look I’m seeing it written that’s it’s as I remember it, either a b&w 7fps liveview, or a vertically stretched one. Is this something that was implemented recently? Are we talking 1:1 crop or a binning mode?
I’m not trying to question anyone’s truth here, if what you say is correct, I’d be interested in giving ML another go.

It's 1080p lineskipped up to 60fps, just like regular liveview. If you wanna shoot higher res than 1080p, then it's lower frame rate and not always centred, and can be greyscale. I don't usually shoot higher res than 1080p because the rolling shutter is worse at higher resolutions, and I'm content with the IQ of the 4K upscaling and a touch of sharpening.

Looks very nice, though I have to say that I don’t think this video shows particularly good dynamic range, though that could be the grade on it. But yes I know, you’re saying the FP doesn’t seem to show much more than this, if any improvement, I agree. Canon’s sensors aren’t typically rated the best, at least DXO-wise.

Well going from upscaled 4K to actual 4K is an upgrade. (And I know a lot of people say 4K doesn’t matter to them, but even if you only care about HD, 4K downscaled to HD will certainly have somewhat better dynamic range than native HD, if the sensors are close).

The last time I used magic lantern was maybe a year ago with the EOSM, and many years before that with the 50D, and I’m sure it’s a much much better experience with the 5D than that little EOSM camera, but the thing that drove me crazy and made it kind of unusable for me was the fact that the real-time preview during shooting was either a significant center crop or, if you wanted actual framing, the preview dropped to a low-framerate, B&W preview; both versions made it significantly hard to both compose and stay in focus. Is the 5D able to give a good real-time preview with proper composing?

Yeah the 5D MK3 is way better than the EOSM and 50D in every respect, IQ, DR, high ISO, and yes preview is real-time with proper framing, just like regular liveview only with a lot more display options. Magic Lantern has the same dynamic range as 14bit raw photo mode: 11.7 stops @ 100 ISO. It's a filmic grade, so the blacks are somewhat crushed. I'm not a big fan of low contrast or HDR type looks unless it's a creative decision driven by a particular narrative.

I have a Pocket 4K too, but I still like the look of the 5D MK3, the color science, cadence, and highlight rolloff are very good. About the only things I don't like about the 5D are its high ISO performance, fixed pattern noise, and limited dynamic range. It looks great upscaled to 4K. I always use a promist filter on the Pocket 4K, it looks too digital without out.

My gut feeling is: I should wait for a 3rd party OLPF before I take the plunge with the FP. I do really like the color science and the form factor.

ML Raw on the 5D3 works like any camera would. In fact, with the exposure and focus aids, it works better than most cameras. The only issue I have found is that playback is wonky. But liveview is in real time with the correct full frame image.

    Here's a frame from a clip I shot a while back on the Canon 24-70mm f/4...

    Nice shot.

  5. I was hoping the FP would be a 4K replacement for my 5D MK3 with Magic Lantern, but so far I haven't really seen anything that suggests it's much of an upgrade. Here's some sunrise beach shots taken with Magic Lantern 14bit lossless raw upscaled to 4K for comparison. The FP is definitely an improvement shooting high ISO, but it doesn't look like there's any dynamic range improvement, which is disappointing. The thing that concerns me the most is the aliasing and moire, which hasn't been a problem with the 5D.

He did not rape her. She just thought he was going to. Nobody gets convicted for rape because someone thought they might do it. They actually have to do it.

What he allegedly did was common assault. From the description it was obvious that they were engaged in the sort of inappropriate horseplay that drunken people do. No matter how upsetting that is to the victim, that is what it was. If they really wanted to sexually assault her they would have done a lot more than that.

    TRIGGER WARNING

"I was pushed onto the bed and Brett got on top of me. He began running his hands over my body and grinding his hips into me. I yelled, hoping someone downstairs might hear me, and tried to get away from him, but his weight was heavy. Brett groped me and tried to take off my clothes. He had a hard time because he was so drunk, and because I was wearing a one-piece bathing suit under my clothes. I believed he was going to rape me. I tried to yell for help. When I did, Brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from screaming."

You may think that's just foreplay, but as far as the law is concerned, that's sexual assault.

And BTW: Running defence for a sexual predator: really gross.

I use evidence and empirical validation.  I never once said I would use my gut feelings to accuse someone of lying.  The regimes of Pol Pot and Stalin can only exist largely because of emotions.  The theology is greater than the man or the objective truth.  Those that oppose must be put down at all costs.  If you don't believe in the greater communist mother land, you will be put down; if you don't believe in "zero year", you will be part of the road that the ox cart moves on to build that 1000 year empire.  The "orange man bad" theology is just the same, but in a very, very smaller scale.  But like it's other counterparts, it is based on emotions.

Sounds like a terminal case of cognitive dissonance to me.

  8. 9 minutes ago, eleison said:

Yeah, millions of people died during Pol pot because they were accused of being spies or going against "the people" with the same type of evidence that was presented during Brett Kavanaugh's  trial.

Accuser:  "Yeah, I remember Diem. He was talking to this american guy.  Sure it was dark. But it was definitely him. Sure, it was 6 months ago and he said that he was with someone else and that someone can vouch for him.  But that was Diem's friend. They are both capitalistic sympathizers..."

Pol pot official: kill Diem!!! Look at the accuser.. She is even crying???!!!!! How can she be lying?  Kill Diem's friend too!!!!

Pol Pot official:   (looks at his secretary) great, we just got rid of over a million capitalists, teachers, bourgeois, etc.  Another 2-3 million more to kill.  There sure are a lot of bad people in the world that want to take down the great nation of Cambodia...  But as long as we don't need definite proof, but just hearsay, I'm sure we can do it.  Our great nation will last for a million years because of our great effort and our ideology..   Remember Orange man bad, we must resist...

That's how some people want the world to work.  NO evidence.. Just feelings.  We have gotten a little better, but we still have people that will "believe her" regardless of anything.  Oh well, fun times.

Obviously this is a shit show, but thanks for pointing it out Andrew and not just shaking your head and keeping quiet.

Almost as bad as the people who view democracy as a game of sports and want their team to win at all costs, are the "enlightened centrists" who think not participating in politics or taking a neutral stance somehow makes them better.

Politics affects basically every aspect of your life, by choosing not to participate you're letting yourself be taken advantage of. And democracy shouldn't be about which party wins or loses, ideally society in general should be winning. In the case of Trump, if you divorce his words and actions from his brand (Republican) they're still at best unintelligent and contradictory and at worse dishonest and actively harmful. This would be true even if they were coming from a Democrat.

It's worth noting that Obama and the Clintons are masters of deception too, but in their case it's a so-called 'enlightened' audience who have been deceived. Political parties are cults, and ideology is a curse on humanity.

Having heard the testimony, if I were on a Jury I would find Brett Kavanagh guilty of rape. But I can understand how your ideology blinds you from the truth.

  11. This deliberate mess the ruling class has gotten us into is a lot more dangerous than most people want to believe. We have 3 options:

    1) Revolution

    2) Elect genuine community representatives to our parliaments, get money out of politics, and abandon the 2 party system.

    3) Extinction

Anyone who thinks extinction is a joke really needs to read more; climate change, the rise of fascism, and diminishing resources are creating a perfect storm. Revolution is the same shit going around in circles, the working class takes down the ruling class only to end up under the thumb again, take China for example. We need to evolve, and fast. The only workable solution is option 2. Hacking the system will be hard, but sitting on the fence and doing nothing  guarantees one of the other 2 options will transpire.

As filmmakers we can play an important part in this process. I made campaign films for 3 independent candidates in this year's Australian federal election, one of whom  was elected (see below). There's a growing movement in Australia for grassroots independent representation, and we'll be much more organised at the next election.

Left and right is a construct made to divide and conquer. We need to focus on the issues that connect us instead of ideology, otherwise we're all screwed.

    Nope. You were played.

Just another distraction from the ridiculous impeachment drama. Any time wasted on this is a win. Or if nothing is said it’s a win too I guess.
The thing is that it’s so obvious. I can’t believe it keeps working.

I didn’t read much of your post. Any of them for that matter. I don’t need the aggravation. See how easy that is? I’m gonna have a great day. If libs could just do that with Trump it would work wonders. But won’t happen.

    Anyway. Take care.

A Trumpkin who's not  interested in the truth, who'd have thunk it.

Reading between the lines of how they're downsampling 6K to 4K i suspect it will help with moire situations as well. Certainly in the DNGs i've seen, with water and highlights it seems remarkably smooth. C5D had a frame with moire though. One thing i find out the image so far (from samples) is that it's naturally quite soft, in a nice way. Not digitally sharpened or anything. The sort of things i like about Reds for example.

From what I've seen/heard it's line skipping/pixel binning, not downsampling, that plus no OLPF is a recipe for moire/aliasing.

I don’t know, a lot of well received cameras don’t have them, the Pocket 4K being one. I haven’t seen any footage of mine from the FP that concerns me.

The Pocket 4K has a 4K sensor, there's no line skipping or pixel binning so aliasing is minimal. The thing with aliasing is it's always there lurking and you can never be sure when it's going to rear its ugly head. I've had aliasing wreck an important shot with the Pocket 4K, thankfully it's the only one.

It’s odd - I get fanboy will be fanboys - but why is everyone on Facebook and reduser saying this is such great news? I mean even if you own a red, why wouldn’t you want to see compressed RAW in other products? Competition is a good thing and it gives consumers more choice. It’s like me celebrating that my S1H won a case that will allow them to be the only camera that can record to an SD card. Why would I celebrate that?

    Because you're in a cult.
