Yes, but sold it soon after the Braw update and went with the S1 which had nicer color rendition and better dynamic range as well as much more texture but at the time horrible blue clipping (Pocket 4K still has red clipping) and motion artifacts using V-Log. Switched to the S1H soon after and tried avoiding ghosting/smearing by overexposing heavily which often leads to thin looking footage, at least the S1H never had blue clipping.
Fun fact: The pre production model of the S1H at IBC in September 2019 with ProRes raw support had the blue clipping fixed while the other model didn't. There were two different firmware development branches.
HLG and any other profile but V-Log and Like709 for whatever reason don't have any motion artifacts but still use noise reduction even at the lowest setting which is fine to me.
The S1 had the noise reduction and blue clipping update for V-Log on November 19th already. It's both cleaner and free of artifacts on the S1.Version 2.0 FW update V-Log setting now has noise reduction of -1, which should address any NR issues you are complaining about. May 25th will be a happy day for S1H users.

Not being snarky, genuinely curious: how does the S1H achieve 14 stops of dynamic range with a 12 bit ADC?
You must be mistaking the bit depth with dynamic range. The only thing they have in common is ration numbers. You can have 14 stops of dynamic range with a 10-bit ADC. Now you won't have fine gradation between the darkest and the brightest, but resolution and dynamic range are completely different.

Due to the weird state the SSD gets into when being read on the MacOS which causes DiskUtil to fail upon erasing the SSD. I dont know what I did but I managed to reformat the SSD to exfat. Plugged it into the Ninja V and viola it works!!!
Even got the firmware updated but I noticed skippy the kangaroo appearing on the recorder on a few occasions. Just maybe I need a new SSD. For now it will suffice since I am just shooting random things at home and trying to get familiar with the whole new set up.
Now to decide on what SSD to get next!
Were you shooting in ProRes or ProRes RAW? ProRes RAW is needs a faster hard drive than ProRes, so make sure to check out Atomos website.
I have a Ninja V too, and Atomos doesn't have anything listed at all for the Panasonic S1H 5.9K ProRes RAW drive requirements. I guess I have to wait and see...

The cripple hammer awaits. We just don't know how it will manifest itself.

Did I hear 12-bit LOG encoded RAW?
-
They are probably packing up one hell of an upgrade. Fix all these bugs and add ProRes RAW support I hope.
-
Yeah, and you have to have an NVidia GPU or it won't work at all. I have a ballzy AMD Pro card with 16GB of VRAM and I am not allowed to play 🤕

@thebrothersthre3 @Vision well you get 10-bit 1080p in v-log BUT only down to 30p. So no 24 or 25p. Seems so Canon-like to remove those and I hope S1H doesn’t have that limitation.
Well, the S1H has 1080p in 10-bit 120fps (which was a surprize to me) so you may have this in 24 and 25p.

Looks like the ghosting artifacts (temporal noise reduction) that plagued the S1 (and were fixed in firmware) are still plaguing the S1H (posted yesterday by Gerald Undone)...

...feeling glad I didn't upgrade from my S1's quite yet.
I have not been able to tell, but what I can say is there is a distinctly worse quality coming from the S1H H.265 encoder vs the H.264 encoder. I was editing a music video I shot a few months ago, and I could really see how bad the HEVC stuff was when it was right next to the other codec.

Anyone got any ProRes RAW files they care to share?

Show me some vintage glass on this beast. This is an indie filmmakers dream! An all in one Varicam GH2 with IBIS. Anyone with a 20mm Canon FD on this beast?
Here are a few frame grabs from the S1H with the Canon 50mm f/1.4 @ f/2.0. I didn't shoot the whole mini doc with FDs, but in some of the lower light scenes, I did use the 50mm a bit. 😊

Thanks, Lux Shots! Does it work the same also in AF-C mode?
I haven't tried AFC too much with touch auto focus. AFC is so bad I've just been pulling focus manually thought the Ronin-S focus wheel.

I'm still tryin' to acquire more information about this camera, and I've a question for you, can't find in the online manual: Does the touch focus works while recording, so you can change the focus point when you want? Or the focus can be only set before start recording?
Yes, but it's different than how the GH5 line works. You have to have the camera in AFS mode for touch focus to work, as it doesn't work in MF mode. Took me awhile to figure this out ?!

DJI Ronin S

2 hours ago, Cat said:Hi there
I've had the Ronin S for about 3 months and have got very little stable footage from it. EG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4YpT-FuEHA
Sent it back and the store said they found no problems with it. DJI support just tell me to try different strength settings but no better really. So I'm left with it being my technique - does a gimbal smooth out hand jitter I'm confused.
Ronin S is my first gimbal btw and my set up is light 1.2kg
thank you for any helpI think the light weight of the camera is causing your issues.
You still have to learn how to walk appropriately with the duck walk, and you have to calibrate it before each use. I have both the Ronin-M and the Ronin-, and I've used the S&M (excuse the pun) with the GH5S and I've only used the S1H on my Ronin-S. I've got excellent footage with them both, but the extra weight of the M really helped keep the footage smoother. Now that the S1H is significantly heavier and has built in IBIS, the footage coming off of the cam looks like it's on rails!

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather shoot raw because I am a lazy shooter and I love the wiggle room that raw video affords, but as far as IQ goes... the S1H is my dream camera right now. Of course, being a lazy shooter... the IBIS makes it even more appealing.
With that said, I see no reason why the S1H wouldn't be a 5 year workhorse camera. The GH5 is almost 3 years old and that camera has, at least, a couple more good years left before it NEEDS an upgrade...
When the S1H's price drops a little next year, I may buy one and in all honesty... for some of the short films I've been writing... I'll probably shoot them in 1080p... lol.
Btw, how is the 1080p on the S1H? And also doesn't it have a 3K anamorphic mode... is that 4:3? That could be the perfect mode for a clean 2K downscale/delivery for my shorts.
I have never shot a thing with the 1080p, even though I have a custom setting set to the 1080p 120hz HFR mode with audio and autofocus! ?

Yeah, that really is a great image @Zak Forsman !!! Images like that make me question if I really NEED raw video.
When I hear comments like this, makes me think this camera will have legs for a very long time!

Here is a video shot to really push the hell out of the grade and stress the 200Mbps H265 codec. Shot in 5.9K encoded at 50Mbps with 150Mbps Mbps maximum.

If you are using a Ronin-S gimbal, you can pull voltage from the accessory port, and that provides 12V with 2A capacity.

I have a Godox SL-150 light. Great light output (f/5.6-8 on my S1H at ISO-400 for a two up shot with a 3x3 thick film diffusion at 100%), Bowens mount and is excellent for music videos, but It's louder than the fan on my Ninja V and S1H combined and then tripled!
Listen, you cannot use this for most indie film or ANY interview style production because the light is just too fucking loud!!! I ran this for an interview in a double baffled softbox around 4 feet from the subject. The subject had a wireless lav on, and it sounds like a hair drier is running the whole interview!

I think any raw camera should utilize a digital spotmeter....
That's one of the best features on the S1H, and I use it all the time. When shooting in V-LOG, it even shows you the reading in stops over middle gray, so you can just tag a highlight and a subject's face and your going to go!

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I was just looking at the Lumix firmware update page and noticed an update for the S1H was added on 10th December (version 1.1) - https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/index4.html#
The change log:
Yeah, I got it; and they broke some stuff too.
Now you can't enable tally lights if you have the camera in Silent mode. I wonder what else was busted with this update as they tried to merge in the changes from the S1 codeline. Goes to show just how separate the code branches are between the S1 and the S1H for regressions like this to happen and not get caught. Of course I'm sensitive to this because I do this for a living at the day job, and it gets under my skin to see someone fumble product update with so much on the line.

The S1H does have 4K 60p 10-bit internal. This feature alone has my Ninja V being used just to nail focus. If your computer has enough balls to process H265, why bother for files 6x the size?
