...and at 60P the GH5 shoots at 420 8bit internally (did you ever shoot 60P on the GH5?)...

When you shoot 60P 4K Pro Res 422 (10bit) HQ - have you ever shot 4K DCI 60P in ProRes HQ?

    Hmm, no I haven't shot 60P on the GH5, but I have on the GH5S ?!

Point taken about bitrate, I was quoting DCI 24p numbers.

...Also, you are bypassing a lot of other internal transformations of the data, perhaps the aggressive noise reduction. Also the GH5 cameras shoot 4K 60P at 8bit 420, but externally 10bit 422. With less compression, more color sampling, and more bit depth, the external recording will be much superior.

...But still, claims about camera performance should be based on the videos it records alone. By this argument, there is nothing the GH5 has over Sony cameras that shoot 422 8bit other than the highly subjective "color science." And with a tinier sensor and sub par AF.

Have you actually shot with the GH5? If you grade your footage there is a ton to be gained from having 10-bit internal, no subjectiveness about it

    I thought Prores HQ had a data rate of  734 Mbit/s, not  1900 Mbit/s.

I believe he's talking about ProRes 4:4:4:4 12-bit. ProRes HQ 4K footage is just under 800 Mbps.

For IQ alone, does an external recorder make that much difference. It is my understanding that aside from frame rate options, the difference is marginal at best.

If you really look at two scene shot both ways, the difference is very minimal, and you have to hunt for it. If you can shoot 24p and the client doesn't require ProRes deliverables, I'd skip renting the recorder, as it's than good.

Hello Sage! I'm very interested in your idea!

Yesterday arrived my new gh5 and I discovered all the dynamic range of HLG! WOW! Highlights are there!

But I'm stuck with editing workflow since premiere pro doesn't support rec2020... I found this topic so the idea is to use your hlg-to-vlog lut in premiere/lumetri color/Basic Correction/Input lut and in premiere/lumetri color/Creative/Look aplying vlog-to-REC709 lut. Am I right by doing this?

Thank you for sharing your work!

Umm, yes Premiere Pro CC 2018 does! You just have to export in H.265 Rec-2020 and HDR export is available. I just did a test HDR export today and loaded to YouTube. It kinda looks like crap because my monitor is not HDR, nut it was detected as HDR in YouTube properly.

I have no quarrel with the quality of the GH5 or GH5s. But if those videos were shot using the Shogun Inferno, then all of the internal compression (and maybe the noise reduction algorithms) of the camera are bypassed. Compression is the enemy of good quality video, so shooting in ProRes at its extraordinary high bitrate (and 10bit 422, of course) really makes a difference. Many cameras would look as good if one is using the Inferno. The Shogun is the video recorder, not the camera. This does not make the videos worthless for evaluating the GH5, but it should be considered in drawing any conclusions about the camera (of course, one of the good features of the GH5's is that they work well with the Infernos).

Well, the GH5 and GH5S can shoot 400Mbps ALL-I, so don't dump on them just yet. I posted a link to some footage and most of it is 400Mbps. So take a gander, give it a grade and report back! ?

  6. (This is a repost, as the other post was labeled RAW GH5S footage, which the GH5S clearly can't do real RAW )

Here is some rather uninteresting video I shot at night with varying ISO ranges so users can do test grades. It's way too cold right now on Ohio to do anything artistic! Most of the footage is in V-Log, but some is in HLG. Video 6 was shot in ISO-4000 even though I said ISO-400.

    Video also contains 150Mbps 10-bit and 400Mbps 10-bit samples.

I've noticed the HLG videos can be pushed past IRE 100 in Premiere Pro CC, so that may be a good format to try and create an HDR H.265 export from premiere.

You lucky dog! You been holding out on us. :astonished:

No I haven't! I posted a link to some straight out of camera GH5S footage here just for you! It's rather uninteresting footage, but it's outside at night with high ISO in V-Log and HLG so you can see how it grades.

...I see no reason if you have a GH4 to even buy a GH5. What Really are you gaining other than IBIS. 10 bit. Hell we have been using 8bit for I bet as long as most of you on here have even lived!  It has seemed to have worked hasn't it.  HDR, hell  like others have said,  I don't know Anyone that even has a 4k TV let alone one that does HDR, I don't have one....

You must have never shot with the guy or GH5 to say something that simple minded.

IBIS in the GH5 was a game changer! And 10-bit internal recording brought pro level capture to the masses. Maybe if your just recording for YouTube, you may not appreciate the quality gained, but you'd have to move up to the Sony FS7 in order to get 10-bit 4K.

So let's please stop with the no one has HDR 4K sets argument. I've had one for over two years. Maybe your circle doesn't have one, but you always should capture footage in the highest quality your budget can accommodate, and the GH5 has that in spades.

Additionally, the OP states interest in photography, but he didn't state what kind. I shot portraits and weddings for years using APS-C gear without complaint. And if he decides to shoot sports, there isn't a full frame camera made that will meet the requirements of that genre. That's where 14 fps and the extra reach of the APS-C Nikon D5 best full frame every time.

And guess what? The 6K photo mode best the Nikon D5 in reach and frame rate! Then there is the GH5's focus stacking feature, post focus feature, time lapse feature, direct to web image transfer with the Panasonic Image app. Hey, you know what? It sounds like the GH5 is a fantastic hybrid camera after all!

Do I own one? Nope. But I have no problem recommending one for the OP over anything else.
