Simon Young reacted to Mark Romero 2 in Nikon Z6 features 4K N-LOG, 10bit HDMI output and 120fps 1080p
He makes a good point in the video.
If you compare it to other cameras delivering FF 10-bit 4K, then the Z6 is cheap. Very cheap. (Meaning, inexpensive, not poor quality).
My hope / dream / fantasy is that it will have all the dynamic range and color science the D750 had when shooting flat and nice 4K and great 1080p when shooting 8-bit internal.

Up until a couple of weeks ago the cheapest option was US$33K! (Canon C700 FF)
Then the Kinefinity Mavo LF came out for "only" US$12K
And shortly after the Nikon Z6 for only US$2K!!!

Simon Young reacted to Django in Nikon FF Mirrorless
Don't underestimate Nikon's flat profile. Mattias Burling had estimated 2014's D750 Flat profile DR at +13 stops:
These 2018 Z series BSI sensors should push out the same if not better DR internally..

Simon Young reacted to Geoff CB in Nikon Z6 features 4K N-LOG, 10bit HDMI output and 120fps 1080p
Honestly the biggest disappointment for me is the lack of 3D tracking in photo, it's there but takes much longer than their DSLR's to use. Battery also seems like a gigantic issue again. Buffer is also way to small
I honestly have no idea why they would leave out dual card slots, they HAD to have seen the blowback Sony saw with that for years and that they would be directly compared to the A7III.

I used to own the d750 and still haven’t found a nicer more organic image than it produced in 1080p. And the motion and colors were lovely. It was just a tad too soft, and the lack of ibis, the 15 minutes internal record limit and the sheer size of it made it too cumbersome and unpractical.
The poor battery life of the Z-series and the single card slot are huge drawbacks with regards to usability. But if the image is nice enough I will still be tempted, even though it seems to be an A7rii with Nikon color science.

Its amusing to see people call any ILC that has no mirror in front of sensor, a Sony clone!
Leave Nikon aside for a moment, most of the new tech or ideas introduced in this industry in recent years, didn't come from Sony. PDAF wasn't Sony invention, they licensed it. and Canon delivered a better version. IBIS was also a licensed tech, and Olympus created a much better iteration of it. EVF wasn't new thing, and Leica was the one who showed how the next generation of it should be. in optics, m4/3 members were true pioneers, and for large sensor glass, it was Sigma who made the bold actions. In video, most of what we now consider as must-have features, determined by Panasonic. In color science, and also the joy of photography, Fuji was the real hero.
Sony is good in two segments: making sensors, and marketing. Both unrelated to its imaging unit.

Simon Young reacted to hansel in Sony a7 III discussion
Sorry, was trolling. I will stay out of this thread. These Sony colour discussion and writing home about how incredible the a7III is have melted my brain.
6 month ago @jonpais gh5 was the ducks nuts before it got completely trashed by gh5s and now with a7III it has become a drag to use.
Sorry to everone.

Simon Young got a reaction from iamoui in Sony a7 III discussion
I own the a7riii and the GH5 and while the autofocus is superior on the Sony I still think it’s very easy to pull focus manually with the gh5, even without aids such as focus peaking and magnifying. I really don’t know how @jonpais finds he needs an external monitor to manage, especially considering the abysmal resolution on the a7iii viewfinder and screen.
Oh, and even with pro color, the colors are much better on the GH5.

From what I've seen, it seems to work well. For example, the difference from Alexa color science is astronomical by comparison

Simon Young reacted to Andrew Reid in Just a quick thank you for supporting EOSHD over the years
Looking back I owe everyone a big thank-you for using the forum and taking an interest in the blog, it is amazing what it has turned into with so little effort on my part I think this place must be the only website on the entire internet without adverts. Long may it continue like that.
Got a GX9 arriving tomorrow... about time I did a review of something cheap with the big shift to high-end stuff. Let me know what you'd like to see in the review of it.

Simon Young reacted to Inazuma in Sony a7 III discussion
So my methodology for a skintone comparison would be:
Use various models with various ethnicities.
Standard profile comparison (Fuji Provia vs Sony Standard or perhaps one of the Cine profiles).
Once with auto WB and again with manual WB (using one of these)
Using Fuji 35mm f1.8 and Sony FE 50mm f1.8
In a variety of locations with different lighting.
I think I would also do more takes using Sony's other profiles; SLOG2, SLOG3 and HLG.
The objective of this comparison would be to get enough data in order to gauge the differences between the various profiles and make LUTs to match them to the best looking one.
Does that seem right?

Simon Young reacted to Nathan Gabriel in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
I think the pocket 4k is intended to deliver professional level quality, which it will. But given it's priced at $1300 and had been marketed at vloggers, I don't think it's being marketed for the traditional/typical professional. Think about how they have emphasized the pocket 4k's microphones, which no traditional professional would use. While the camera can definitely work for a cheap studio set up, I think it can really capture market share from Panasonic and Sony prosumers, and that's a really big market.
I've been really confused by people pitching the pocket 4k as a vlogging camera. But I think I'm starting to understand the idea. Personally, I don't really watch YouTube. So I thought it was basically just people like Logan Paul making light of suicide or PewDiePie being anti semitic. However, I then thought about stuff that I've seen some of my past girlfriend watch. There are a lot of fashion and make-up vloggers who really need incredibly high quality images even though they are basically running the channel on their own. Same thing for food and travel vloggers. No one wants to travel to the Rift Valley, Grand Canyon, Colosseum or Great Wall and capture anything less than the best. The price tag along with things like the low light capability mean that semi professionals, who might have more knowledge about fashion or travel than video, can capture incredible video even if they don't know how to or have the ability to light their scene. I'd bet that they could make great user of the baked in lut capabilities as well.
I'm not trying to suggest that prosumer vloggers are the primary target audience of the pocket 4k. But I do think that using an HDMI port and also the USB-C connection make the camera accessible to users from a big market that companies like BM don't typically get to tap into. I'm really excited not just for the camera itself, but also to see who uses it and what they produce. If travel vloggers start using the pocket 4k, I might actually start going to their channels instead of watching national geographic reruns. (Though YouTube could certainly improve it's codec)
Just my 2 cents. I understand that there are good reasons to prefer SDI over HDMI.

Simon Young reacted to scotchtape in Sony a7 III discussion
"The canon has more of a green tint on the skin which I like more" from the video... yeah no thanks.
These guys love wacky green skin tones... Praising Canon for green tint, even though they literally say the Sony camera captured the scene more truthfully.
IMO the Sony won hands down, not saying much since their comparison shots said nothing about the color or white balance settings.
Just look at the YT comments, everyone is calling them out for their ridiculousness.

Simon Young reacted to Robert Collins in Sony a7 III discussion
Honestly, I am not trolling but I just disagree the 'results speak for themselves'.
Lets take a very specific example where the commentators are 'drooling' over the Canon cameras.
So look I understand that people see better Canon color here but I dont. I actually dont like either very much but the Canon is definitely too green for me.
But more obviously, the Canon is less sharp/softer which makes it look more 'cinematic'. Softness tends to be a 'character' of 5D mkiv images in general but I dont see it as much of an advantage because you can always make images less detailed but you cant add detail.
And along the same lines people tend to like Canon video because they 'crush the blacks' and again I dont see that as an advantage on the basis that I can crush the blacks in post but it is more problematic to uncrush them.
So, as I see it, there is much more 'subjectivity' in this whole subject than people imagine. I am sure that people who shoot Canon love the colors (most probably because they are used to them) and I would guess that they see any other camera that shoots different colors as 'not so good' because they judge colors against a Canon color standard. And as the majority of pros probably shoot Canon they are all in a cosy information bubble.
