Snowfun reacted to Andrew Reid in Clive James - UK and Aussies have lost a great talent
RIP my Aussie friend. May you enjoy the afterlife and start filming that Clive James Postcard wherever that may be...
Here is his incredibly dry and witty portrait of Berlin, one of the TV shows that inspired me to go there in the first place. I ended up spending nearly 8 years there.
Clive James was huge in the UK and his programmes were a weekly must-watch for millions of British people.
I recommend checking out everything he did - be it the books, which are fantastic, his poems, his TV shows and documentaries....  he's one of my all time favourite writers and wits.
He leaves a big hole in British culture, much missed.

Snowfun reacted to Sage in Pocket 4K to Alexa Conversion
"Pocket 4K footage is precisely transformed to match the color science of the Arri Alexa, without compromise. This is achieved without artifacts, while introducing a smooth, organic rolloff."

For the better part of the last year, I've been working to map the color of P4K BMDFilm to match my Alexa's LogC, as measured under sunlight and halogen. To do this, I wrote an interpolation program in C++ that can accept an enormous amount of data (~40k samples per camera), and interpolate smooth internal contours, or 'waves' between them. Exposure compensation conversions were made with the same interpolation engine (transforms replicating sensor color response with variant exposure).

Another significant element of the project was to recreate Arri's Rec709 to maintain the entirety of recorded LogC gamut, in a film-derived envelope (for the display variations). This was particularly difficult, as the correct RGB primary behavior needed to be exactly replicated within contiguous 709, but smoothly diverge to HDR-like handling of far gamut (where Arri's Rec709 ends). This new envelope (EC Gen.4) is particularly impressive, and I may release it for the Arri, as it is significantly preferable to normal Arri Rec709.

Mea culpa. The RED.com RAW patents was filed in 2007/2008, so will basically expire in 2028.
8 more years to go and we can give RED.com the finger.

Internet is going to be truly done for when AI progresses to next step. Maybe at some point they'll be so believable we'll all be rubbing our cameras in CBD oil.

Snowfun reacted to mercer in What is your lens kit strategy?
I think it’s important to first note that I’m a narrative hobbyist with a long term goal of producing a few short films and a feature film as time and money permits. I’m more interested in composition than resolution, but consider myself a writer/director more than a cinematographer.
With that being said, I love lenses and through the years I have tested nearly every major brand of vintage lenses on most modern mounts. When I finally settled on a camera, I learned that going native, whenever possible, was the best option, and most of the time, a zoom lens allowed me the freedom to concentrate on the creative. But there aren’t many zoom lenses that offered the MUST HAVES for handheld, guerrilla shooting my style and circumstance requires...
    • size and weight
    • good image stabilization
    • fast aperture
It was easy to get one or two of the three, but that elusive third usually ended up being the dealbreaker. And when you added the cost of a good zoom lens, it was difficult to compromise on even one of those.
So, I moved onto the single prime concept of shooting, which I really enjoy from a creative stance. I’m pretty steady handheld, up to about 35mm, which happens to be the sweet spot for my point of view. And if I use native Canon glass with IS, I usually don’t need any secondary support other than a neck strap.
But even the single, prime concept doesn’t feel perfect for my circumstances so I’ll most likely end up compromising my MUST HAVES and replace a few of my prime lenses with a slow zoom and end up with a couple fast modern primes, a couple fast vintage primes and a zoom.
As I get older, I realize this never ending pursuit for the best lens or best camera or highest resolution is the antithesis of creativity and stagnates the art and craft of filmmaking.

@kaylee what did you eventually do with the scene (bedroom?) with the camera heading skywards through the ceiling/roof? Sorry, I cant recall the details but it sounded a fun challenge you were confronted with and I wonder what you achieved. Any possibility of seeing the result?

Also for the first time it has PDAF and some type of software IBIS. Plus Venice mojo and higher dynamic range. Some big updates there.
It will also be significantly less money than the C500 II, so I say it's competitive and will sell really well.
