First off, the C200, C300 MK2, are work horse cameras. You can literally shoot entire documentary with a bare bones package. The reliability, form factor, ND filters and XLR ports make things so easy. The batteries run for literally 4/5 hours. It is ridiculously easy to color grade. The skin tones have a softness and smoothness that the pocket just does not produce.
Also, this guy is a youtube review guy. The pocket 4k clips so damn hard. If you clip highlights, it looks terrible. His example shots are literally the best case scenario. He also keeps talking about "how accurate the green in the trees are." To be honest, the trees look like Sony green, with lots of yellow. Kind of sickly.
Sharper is not better. That pocket is looking harsh in comparison. It almost looks like the C200 has an extra scrim up to soften the light. The forehead and cheeks have this harshness in the highlights that literally does not exist with the C200.

I wouldnt count Canon out - underinvesting in their camera business looks, increasingly, a pretty smart move.

It looks fake, like when you fake dof with masks in after effects. Or when you film in a green screen and replace the background with a blurred one. It looks awful, by I hope apple or Samsung or someone can get this looking nice. If a feature like this gets integrated into the iPhone, and is available to filmic pro, and if it looks good and there isn’t aggressive sharpening and processing, I will literally switch to an iPhone. The dynamic range is already at 12 stops on the XS with filmic pro log v2.

If anyone is curious, I just finished up a piece shot about 50 percent with the pocket. This was graded by a colorist.
The other half is Super 8 and there's maybe 4/5 shots with the GH5.
This might not make sense if you don't live in Seattle but maybe relatable. Anyway. Shot with the OG bmpcc.

I just finished a short piece that was all Super 8 and the bmpcc. We had a few GH5 inserts and the colorist said they looked “glossy” compared to the pocket camera.
The small size was perfect for what I was doing and I have always loved the look. I think the S8 and bmpcc is a good combo.
I completely agree as well. Flat film scans are the same way. A beautiful look can be had with a simple three way color balance.

As much as it has crossed my mind, I just cannot let either the Micro or the OG pocket go. Even if I rarely use them, they just produce such a beautiful image.

Not quite. If that was the case, we would all have gopros as our main rigs. I think you are underestimating the colors, dr, and sensor on these cameras. I get your point to a certain degree - good color correcting definitely helps any footage. But this camera has a special quality to it as do most with this fairchild sensor.

i unfortunately can't edit, it won't let me - not sure why that's the case

You make a strong case for this camera with footage that backs it up.

As someone who has shot with a range of budget cameras (including GoPro/iPhone/point-and-shoots/etc) and put many many hours and money into learning to colour grade, I fundamentally disagree with this.
The really expensive cameras with great colour give an image that you can just apply some contrast to and they look fantastic, but the worse the colour from the camera the harder it is to get a good grade out of them.  Of course, it's not impossible to do so, but you have to be highly skilled, lucky, or both to get that great result.
The fantastic grade on that short from the Micro has much to do with the camera, even if it was just that the camera wasn't creating an almost impossible task for the film-maker.

Two things for sure - The battery life will still suck and the OG pocket will still have a nicer looking image.

If you bought a C200 and the pocket was even on your radar, then you probably bought the wrong camera regardless.
The benefits of the c200 are the ergonomics, auto focus, battery life, Internal NDs and reliability. The pocket can probably get close strictly image wise, but it’s a lot harder to get there.

You can always tell who lives in a bubble and who doesn't by threads like this. Most people I know don't even have room for an 85 inch TV.
The vast majority of people will never own a television that can benefit from 8k. Hell, I don't know that most will ever own a TV that displays the benefits of 4K.

Anyway, I just watched some of the P6K videos and they look pretty good. The wedding video looks great. Of course, with the data rates, I don’t know if this camera is the best option for a wedding, but for a fake, promo wedding... I do...

The most intriguing part to me is the larger S35 sensor and EF mount. I hope they did something to improve battery life.
6k is cool. Lots of talk about “adapting to the future. ” It is an interesting time with a lot of commercial work literally being shot on 16mm and 35mm film right now.
I am curious if the resolution war even as big of a deal as it was even a few years ago?

Great post. I like how you linked the Alexa and early DSLR/Mirrorless cameras to the pursuit of a filmic image.
With @DaveAltizer ‘s recent return to the 1DC and this post, I wonder if you have any interest in writing a 10 years later review on some of the original cameras that paved the way to the pursuit of that elusive filmic look and how they hold up today?
Although outdated, I think the mjpeg codec adds a special meatiness to the IQ of some the earlier cameras... your hacked GH1 videos come to mind as a perfect example and it would be interesting to see how you would use these camera today.
With the prices of the 1DC and C100 steadily declining, I must admit I’m tempted to give one or the other a try.

I can't help but thinking using a camera like the RX10 mk IV is not a better, easier way to just go about it. Why worry about lenses. All in one stuff is, even a camcorder is designed for a reason, potability with less hassle. It is why ENG cameras are used, ease of use in fast changing situations. Who needs the bulk and hassle on family outings.
You can even go backwards on models with the RX10 and have a constant F stop, and ND filters. I doubt you need all the reach of the latest model lens wise.
