I'm not missing the fact that £2100 is a lot to spend on essentially a hd hybrid in 2019 when all the other cameras offer decent 4k. It's not like 4k hasn't been available for many years on other cameras, Canon seems way behind on this, RS and DR. Tis a bummer cause I've got a lot of Canon lenses but I think I'm going to sell them, and the good old C100 and finally free myself from the constant disappointment of waiting for Canon to get their arse into gear

How did any of you lot manage in film production a few years ago, AF has only just become semi reliable? You all talk like you can't work without it?
I'd say the RS is another major issue with the Eos-r - I've tried it and it is very noticeable and no you don't have to whip pan to see it. I had the Sony a6300 and I don't want to have to be so limited in how I move a camera again

Ah thanks for that, quite disappointing for such a new 'full frame' camera.
They measured Panasonic S1 as having 12.2 stops to the eos-r 10.7 and that gap could grow even bigger when full v-log comes to the s1

I don't know, unless Sony start putting their Venice colour science into their mirrorless cameras, the S1 and the Nikon have a much nicer image to my eyes. From what I see the S1 has beautiful colours straight out of the camera and can't wait to see what it's like with full v-log. The Nikon needs some work but can get nice colours too. Sony really needs to address their colours or regardless of specs they will lose a  lot of potential customers. They have shown they can create lovely image - the F35 and new Venice prove that, they just need to start putting it into their lower end

ok so in the spirit of eoshd togetherness I have decided to share this video to see what u guys think. maybe it will inspire zach ☺️
    let me explain:
i made this short at the end of last year, but I never completed the edit/fx/etc 100%. Got busy with other stuff, and I was working up my gumption to come back to it with a fresh eye.
then my iMac broke, and I have a new ‘puter on the way, but I’m anticipating the nightmare of opening resolve and Siri saying ERROR: NO MEDIA FOUND, because my files, ALTHOUGH BACKED UP, are super disorganized, there might be a few things missing, but at the very least it’ll be a big pain in the ass to relink everything to get going on this again
aannnyyyway I always feel bad for posting literally zero videos but numerous dog pics and I was like Screw it, its not perfect, but here ya go.
this is not the best file, its the one I had in icloud, there could be a better render, etc etc, and its getting murdered by youtube compression, but my first reaction watching it after not messing with it for a few months was…. …Hey~! Its not too bad! ☺️ not bad for a first film i made all by myself! imagine if I had a crew, a budget… ?
so, if youd like to see, pls check it out, and if you have any helpful feedback that involves changing/adding things, that’s great, but I do NOT have access to the actors/locations any more and there is almost no chance of me shooting additional footage, so as long as suggestions don’t involve me spending any more money on this project, I’m all in ?
at best, I think this is a cool example of what one person can do with a 5d3 in 2019 with no budget, crew, or resources whatsoever... as indie as it gets lolol

"A very short, quickly shot video on one of the coolest guys I know. Brooklyn based photog Mike Grippi. Shot with the Nikon Z6 Filmmaker's Kit, on a Z6 camera, recording into the Atomos Ninja V, which is a tremendous assist in making a film quickly while traveling light. This was shot in a single day, and recorded in ProRes RAW directly to the Atomos. Many thanks to Levi Arnold, our editor, who did a great job giving the piece a cool look. Hit the blog for more details! "
First footage I've seen with the yet to be released Prores Raw update. Great looking video I think!

I'd say it's pretty on par with the GH5, which is excellent. I've found in other full-frame mirrorless cameras (Just Sony, since I haven't used Nikons), I found the IBIS to be pretty warpy, warbly, and only useable when standing still. But the GH5 has amazing IBIS and can be used in all situations. The S1 lives up to it, for sure - pretty amazing for a full-frame sensor. Might be why the body has some extra heft.

Yep! Purchased one and have had it for a week. Initial impressions are very positive. I have never written a review on a seller's website before but felt compelled to do so for the S1. Here is what I wrote:
I have used a variety of mirrorless cameras, starting with Sony A7s and A7rII and then the GH5 and most recently the Canon EOS R. The only camera that Ive held on to long-term is the GH5, so I was very excited when I heard Panasonic was releasing a full-frame mirrorless camera. Now that it has arrived, it is truly the most professional, robust, and beautiful mirrorless camera Ive used. I bought and tested out the Canon EOS R, but found it frustrating ergonomically and with hindered video specs (big crops, no stabilization, etc), it required a lot of compromises. It took beautiful images, but for video (which is what I mostly do), the GH5 outperformed it in every way.

Next to the EOS R (and definitely all the Sonys), the Panasonic S1 feels like a true professional camera. It's a bit heavier than the other mirrorless cameras, but since I mainly use Sigmas 24-70, 18-35, or 50-100mm, once you have the lenses on there, it's not a huge difference. Its actually more comfortable because the grip is so nicely designed.

REALLY looking forward to the 10-bit, V-Log update in a couple of months as well as the Sigma EF L adapter in a few weeks. Will really help make this camera shine.

    --
To expand on some of those points, it really does feel like a truly professional camera. While there are plenty of mirrorless cameras that get you great results, I often feel like I am fighting the camera (like the EOS R) to have it do what I want. You can do it, it's just not that much fun. Same with Sonys - they just don't feel good and I (personally) don't enjoy using them. I also really think the Sony mirrorless and 8-bit (FS) image is seriously flawed - and that's my #1 consideration for any filmmaking tool.
I'm in no way a Panasonic fanboy, but after trying for years to use Sony and Canon, the former with a compromise on image quality, the latter with a compromise on usability, specs, and performance, I'm finally satisfied in Panasonic world with the EVA-1, S1, and GH5. Great color, incredible image, great usability, incredible customization, all the tools and all the required specs and approved codecs. Their mount system is a mess, so looking forward to them hopefully streamlining that in the next year or two.
    Highly recommend the S1.

If nothing else, this test really shows the pretty wide gap in color and image quality between Panasonic and Sony, in my opinion. S1 looks fantastic.

I bought the camera for $2250 with free battery, battery grip and 3 year warranty. I'm selling the grip so it's $2000 camera for me.
I really think it's the best camera I've ever owned. I had Canon 6D, 5D IV, EOS R and tried various camera Sony A7III, A9, A7RIII.
I primarily use it for still photography. Beautiful EVF, ergonomic, great IBIS, and no banding. The AF is really good for still and the inclusion of eyeAF is much better than Canon EOS R but still no match for Sony. It also track animals.
It has alot of little things I like - quick toggle for AF-C/AF-S/Manual, quick lever for silent shutter, manual focus magnification, backlit buttons, focus bracketing, and custom modes.
This might be the first camera where I can set the setting for each scenarios I commonly shoot with - timelapse, portrait, landscape, etc. This is so great to have!
This does not have the best AF compare to Sony but it's more than usable as is for me. EyeAF is much better than Canon EOS R. I'm sure it will get further improvement.
I considered all of Nikon, Sony, and Canon offering. I ended up with Panasonic S1 based on my priority and needs - dual card slot, great EVF, good sensor, IBIS, ergonomic.
Here is a AF test done between Sony A7III vs Panasonic S1
Also, I just find out ISO 50 is a true ISO. https://www.l-rumors.com/diggloyd-panasonic-s1r-has-true-iso-50-not-a-faux-iso-kudos-to-panasonic/
This is pretty amazing for increase dynamic range.

Was holding out hope, but after using the S1 (vs the EOS R), I'm going full Panasonic for the foreseeable future (the S1 is AWESOME). The EVA-1 is approved by all, has amazing, wide variety of codecs, and is an all around stellar camera (will need to shell out $300-400 for a monitor of course). I'm even starting to prefer Panasonic's color science to Canon's.
The EVA-1 + the S1 + the GH5 is a great three-camera lineup Panasonic has going. Excited to see them move their low-end cinema line over to L-Mount and, hopefully, an MFT mount camera too.
It would be great to either have an EVA Mini MFT with the GH5/6 being the B-Cam, or an EVA-2 L-Mount with the S1 as a B-Cam.

I bought one used.  it's about 1.5 stops better in the shadows than the c300 ii and same in the highlights (3.5 stops over key) - https://cinematography.net/CineRant/2018/07/30/personal-comments-on-the-2018-cml-camera-evaluations/
which makes it almost as good as any camera - well better than the alexa in shadows but, still alexa is the king in highlights.
it shoots pro res.  it does everything you wish the c300 ii would do.  well not raw light - i don't know why it doesn't do that - maybe I should ask them.
here's some stills with a zeiss 28mm standard speed - doesn't quite have full frame coverage.
i'll post a video soon to show more tests with it.

For stills, DPAF, Sony, Nikon all use phase detection that cause banding issues under certain lighting environment or raise the shadow.
This may or may not matter for video, but it's a concern for me since I primarily shoot stills. I've seen in various group and forum that show those artifacts make it unusable. This happens in EOS R, Sony A7/R, Nikon Z series camera. Sony A9 is the only one that doesn't exhibit this with the fast read out. It's rare occurrence but it does happens.
The easy way is to follow the pack and adopt PDAF at the expense of image quality. They won't ridicule on the net anymore.
I actually think it's bold of them to adopt a non compromise approach to image quality and go against standard practice. They are constantly attack for their choice in sticking with DFD. Despite all these ridicule, I found the latest version 1 FW AF to be usable. There is no pulsating and it's fast. It focus really fast in low light and track well enough for non sport activity. If you are using it for photo, it's a non issue while have no banding issues.
Sure the AF may not be the best, but it's more than usable since it's combination of features is the closest to being a perfect camera for me. It's also one camera I've been the most excited for. I've been a Canon users only for 10 years that was interested in Sony A7III, A7RIII, A9 etc. All those camera has compromises in some way that goes beyond features.
    Panasonic S1:
Class leading EVF 5.76 million dot 120 hz Dual IS (class leading IBIS FF 6 stops) Dual card slot (first dual XQD/CFE & SD card slot combo) 4K 60 30 cropped (1st FF to offer it) | unlimited 4K 30p EyeAF and animal tracking Ergonomic and weather sealing with button logically lay out Fully touch screen LCD Back lit buttons Focus bracketing  High resolution mode 96 mpx and 187 mpx for 47 mpx sensor.  Timelapse Fully touch screen LCD  Dynamic range beat Fuji medium format, Z6, A7III, A7RIII at low ISO with clean ISO 12,800. For a $2500 S1 camera with free battery and grip, Panasonic offer a lot of class leading features. I can forgive it for not having the best AF. I'm sure they are working on FW to get it even better.
This is their first FF mirrror less camera and it shows they really tried. I have no problem supporting a camera company that gave me such a bang for my money. There is no perfect camera, but what you are willing to compromise on. This come the closest perfect camera for me.

Yes funny how the S1`is the only camera that ticks all of the boxes from the OP and yet folk then feel the need to move the goalposts and ignore it. I think the S1 is by far the most compelling of all the recent mirrorless 'full frame' cameras, and the image is looking lovely to my eyes. Here's another little short, love the colours

The Panasonic S1 does have all of that now.
It's sort of weird how much people have been ripping on the S1 - No, it's not a full-frame GH5, but with the upcoming V-Log/10-bit update, it's pretty darn close. Every other manufacturer gives us internal 8-bit 420 (Sony, Nikon, Canon), big crops (Canon), no 60 fps (everyone), etc.
Add on that Panasonic has the best ergonomics for video by far (in my opinion) and a great XLR adapter, and you have a very capable camera.

I have no idea which brand has the worst, but I've seen fanboys for every brand/camera. Honestly, it doesn't matter who's worse because being a fanboy is insanely dumb no matter how you slice it. I'll use whatever I can afford and whatever makes my life easier. I love / hate stuff about pretty much every camera I've owned and used.
They are all tools. Some do certain things better/worse than other things. Most of the issues stem from people projecting their own needs and/or preferences onto everyone else. There was a big thread on DVXUSER about GAS, and it went off track into smaller cameras vs larger ones. I (and another in the thread) prefer smaller cameras for run and gun. Others thought we were crazy. No one's wrong, it's just a preference.
It's human nature on display, I suppose.

Filmed on a iPhone, audio recorded on iPhone headphones supplied with iPhone, editing, voice-over and grading done in Resolve.
I've never done a voice-over before, so a big chunk of my time was spent figuring out how to do it, and then trying to work out how to make Resolve do it, including reading tutorials etc.
I even came up with the idea for it in the three hour window, so that's cool too.
ah crap.  Just realised mine is way longer than 1 minute!
