I went through basically the same thing with m4/3... the Minoltas are great glass, but unfortunately just a bit too short of a flange to adapt to any modern SLR mount. I've never found the cheap boosters to be up to snuff- flaring, soft corners, low contrast, backfocus going out because the adjustment screw goes loose, sloppy fits... just a lot of frustration. I went through a few and eventually just had to plunk down on two used Metabones boosters, one for the MDs and one for my Nikon glass.
Then the A7III came out, and I realized that it was actually way cheaper than a GH5 with the two Metabones, with less fuss. Plus now I can use an ND Throttle adapter for outdoors stuff, and have even less fuss with external NDs.

Actually, I've found all content of presentation in general more serious - as little bit shameless: actually showing anything but achiеvable possible plan. Even about future codec their words are shamelessly indeterminate: "codecs will be best possible for video work"... i. e. clearly with idea to wait and see what other manufacturers will do and than try to surpass their offer. Probably having better cooling know-how and codec-science knowledge in sleeves by which could beat concurrency, I think that Panasonic makes step further in a cheap (and not just a bit dirty) game of delaying, aka stealing time as more and more main business strategy...
What is ugly to me is that Panasonic indeed can - as it looks like - make, for example 24-105 lens with f4 , f2.8, maybe even spectacular f2 - but decision again depends solely of selling need - as they come out with m43 10-25 f1.7 lens only just at the moment when m43 system selling seems jeopardized... It has to be tolerated, but lesser from company that earlier had idea of "serving to community with best possible tools" as one of the main marketing motto... What a difference in comparison to proudly disclosure announce of GH5 with road map...
Of course, all such business background procrastinated estimations are logical and even expected, but know they are made so brutally obvious that looks to me very unattractive - even if there's no any doubt that Panasonic easily could make the best and most advance offering.

Going through old stuff and stumbled across this. What a pain in the ass this could be to use, but damn if I don't have fond memories using it! If all you've ever known is editing on a PC then you don't know what it was like back in the old days! This is what I started on 20 years ago, when I was a 14 year old video geek!

Exactly my feelings since X-H1 4K transferred then to the other old models through firmware update. With Fuji you simply can't go wrong unless you have no clue what you're doing at all : -)

The Fuji is an excellent choice for hybrid shooters. It handles well for the size. The build is excellent. Then manual controls lets you feel like your are "really" taking old-school photos. The images do not disappoint. The video performance is as good as cameras costing much more. Built in microphones are stereo and sound pretty good for what they are. The preamps are usable. And the colors are lovely.
It's a win... regardless of what may be coming down the pike. This camera can work for today and for a few years to come. It is my new goto travel camera.
Nice work Fujifilm... Consider yourself officially on the radar.

It’s a dream of a camera, I just got mine. The lack of ibis is not bothering me at all, because the rolling shutter is so well controlled. If you can’t get a good image out of this camera then your really fucked.

Let's not forget that the sensor in the GFX50s/r made its debut in 2014 in Phase One and Hasselblad backs. Not to mention there's significantly more money and resources in the development of APS-C and Full Frame sensors, since they sell much much more of them.

Formats larger than 35mm has always been a niche market. You buy medium format because you like the look and you're willing to give up a lot of practicality for it. Also, less DoF isn't the reason you have a more three dimensional image -- it's the transition between focus and out of focus. It's the way you can get separation between subject and background but not reduce the background to a big blurry smear.

All of the following photos were shot with my Canon FD 85mm F1.2 from 1976 on the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Medium format at F1.2?! Yes, it works and no vignetting!
I am really interested in what Fuji is doing at the moment, but with the most interesting cameras at the show just a development announcement and dummy body-design, we'll have to wait a bit longer for them to truly reveal their cards.

It isn't just shallower DoF, it's the way it transitions from focus to out of focus. The larger the format, the more three dimensional the transition -- if you've ever seen an 8x10 slide it feels like you can reach into the frame. I shoot 4x5 slide film and it feels different to look at compared to 35mm.

But having worked with this current generation of APS-C, Full Frame, and both the Hasselblad and Phase One cameras, there's not always a lot in it. You can definitely tell the difference between APS-C to MF, but a D850 with a 50mp Phase XF? Not a lot in it for a lot of applications. But you can tell the difference with a higher megapixel sensor, so I'm very interested in the GXF100s.
Larger individual pixel sites gather more light -- not the sensor size itself. Hence the GH5s has a 12mp chip vs the 20mp in the GH5.

I shot 6x7 for a while... I found the look similar to a wide open Otus on FF, I'd guess? Good micro contrast, a surprising lack of aberrations, low amounts of grain (for film), shallow depth of field. Look for Hasselblad 500 photos on Flickr for reference. Or the Revenant has that look, but highly processed. I really liked it. The lenses split the difference between super sharp and vintage, and have a lot of depth and micro-contrast to their rendering. A lack of aberrations and very sharp (overall, not per given mm) but also good contrast and unfussy bokeh due to simpler designs with fewer air to glass surfaces and less exotic glass.
I found I needed much more light in order to get enough depth of field and to get the right shutter speed (on film I used the reciprocal rule, which doesn't quite hold up on digital, but which disadvantages longer focal lengths needed for the same FOV on MF). It's not great for photojournalism, better for studio work. Hasselblads were popular for fashion. Okay for landscape and architectural/real estate, but you really want a tech camera for that stuff to get lens movements and that gets $$$.
There's no magic to MF, though, particularly on digital where the sensors are much much smaller than they are on film, and barely larger than full frame. MFDB are often 33mmX44mm; by contrast, Fuji Rangefinders were nearly 60mmX90mm of film. Just think one step beyond FF but without a lot of lenses available.
If you shoot a lot of fashion or high end portraiture, I think you'l like the look a lot. Another big advantage is the leaf shutter, which syncs to higher shutter speeds (I think, forget the details) and is also much lighter. So despite the massive film plane, the shutter has very little mass, like a rangefinder.

    No articulating screen?  PASS!
Specs are meaningless if the body isn't practical.   I've had enough of dicking around with "solutions" that just add complexity.   If I can't flip the screen around the camera is useless.

I'm sure folks have posted this new short film shot with the Fujifilm X-T3, but here it is anyway. This film is beautiful, and I think Andrew is right about it being a Samsung sensor. Footage from this camera is nothing like previous Fujifilm cameras. It really has a Samsung NX1 feel about it. And I shot hundreds of hours of footage with an NX1 and sold it about 2 weeks ago. I loved my NX1, and it was great for many years, but the macro blocking finally made me sell it. This new improved sensor looks like a major evolutionary step. Samsung must have had some help with the processor too. Only a few companies and Samsung is one of them, has the technology for so much horsepower from a tiny chip.  Also, these images do not look like Sony sensor, in my opinion. Check out old NX1 videos and you will see the similarities. Anyway, enjoy.

A lot will hinge on the AF capabilities, rumors have Panasonic still pretending PDAF doesn't exist. A 48mp body can make waves on the stills side, but DFD is not the path to be competitive with CaNikon and Sony.
IBIS, 4k60p, FF, we're getting closer to the magical "one body for everything" - but DFD means the S will still have a nasty wart.

You sound like someone that is 30 years old. There was no such thing But FF on film cameras, other than a few odd duck ones, for 75 years. Older people are Used to that size. It has the best quality. And older people can afford them. The smaller cameras don't fit the average American's hands very well. They have way more MP. Every camera manufacturer has one or is making one. There is a ZERO trend of making cameras small anymore. There is no market for them now.
I can see m4/3, I have had a bunch of cameras with that mount. Even my AF100 used it, BMPCC i had. even this New PK4 has it. But I just like the look and versatility of FF Mirrorless. Now I will admit I DON'T want a FF DSLR anymore.  I toy with the idea of going back to it. But when I pick up my A7s which is just as small as nearly any m4/3 camera, I just can't go back. There is more 35mm FF used lenses out there than anything else. There is a Different look, a look you can't get in m4/3 like  @Oliver Daniel says.

    X-T3 in da house!
Just a quick glimpse at the image, but I already have a feeling it's the best I've ever seen from a camera this price. Wonderful codec and detail.
I am trying the Zhongyi SpeedMaster 35mm F0.95, which is also a positive first impressions, very clean bokeh and Noctilux-like rendering.
I am letting that duke it out with a couple of cheap Speed Booster clones though, to see if it's worth the money over, say, a Minolta 50mm F1.4 + SB.
Hey guess what - you can punch in to focus during 4K recording and the quality is incredibly detailed, unlike Sony.
The EVF is better than A7 III hands down.
I am using Film Simulation bracket-mode for stills which is right next to Movie mode on the drive lever, makes it a bit easier to switch.
1/50 assigned to "T" on the shutter dial.
Just waiting for my B+W vario ND to arrive.
It will be manual focus for now as I am away from my main base with all my fuji glass back there. Will be bringing this to Photokina with me and saying to Canon "why would I buy YOUR 1.8x crop mirrorless camera"
GH5 just got beaten I think.
All it lacks over A7 III is a way to get the full frame look with Canon lenses at the same time as AF. There needs to be a better range of adapters!
