IronFilm reacted to Mattias Burling in Camera stores disappearing
The cm1 feels nice in the hand. They should put two small, flush program wheels like on the Leica T.
Its big for a smartphone but not unbearable.

there are so many reasons to criticise nikon: In no particular order: Their marketing, product strategy, blinkeredness with video, nikon 1, DL debacle, those embarrassing action cams, their locked down firmware, their corporate culture, lack of imagination, inability to listen to their users... the list goes on. But rarely do you hear nikon shooters go *sigh, I wish I could take photos like wot that samsung smartphone does* hee hee

deciding which camera to buy based on a DXOmark score is as sensible as a mixed metaphor on a bull.
and as td^ says I agree with you on most things, but not this. I dont agree with him either. Clearly image quality is not determined by dxomarks. Surely you know better than most: horses for courses. D5 is about speed.
according to dxo my d5500 has better dynamic range than my d800. It just doesn't. Maybe in the testormatic-dynamic-rangifier2000 it does, but in lightroom and photoshop - in a picture of an actual thing - it does not. Similarly my canon 7d would get near the 5dmk2 in theory, bit in practice the shadows were a mushy purple and green nightmare.
Anyhoo, IMHO the d800/d810 still has the nicest image on the market: and that's not bad for a 5 year old camera.

IronFilm reacted to akeem in Nikon struggling to match Samsung NX500 stills quality with 2 year head start
The D5's low ISO dynamic range is obviously a trade-off for it's ability to maintain good dynamic range at very high ISOs. It's one of the very best on the market in that respect. Don't like it, don't buy it.
As far as the D7500 is concerned, don't take Dx0marks scores for gospel. The larger pixel pitch of the D7500 gives it much better dynamic range from ISO 400 onwards than the SAMSUNG.
Dx0mark's maths is massively biased towards high res sensors. And doesn't take into account DR at high ISOs. The sports score is also effectively meaningless as a result
What's the difference between a score of 1300 ISO and 1400 ISO. less than 1/6 of a stop??? how is that a useful metric? When the d7500 is a full stop ahead of the SAMSUNG in dynamic range at high ISOs. They've gotten their maths all muddled up in the color depth scoring (which is heaving biased to high res camers), which has a big effect on the sports score.
We're talking about difference here of 1/3 to 1/6 of a stop in DR, and about APSC sensor that are closing in on their theorital limits between trade-offs of SNR and pixel pitch. This is a pointless discussion. When all APSC nikons have been more than good enough since the D7000,

IronFilm reacted to wolf33d in 5d Mark iii ML Raw or Gh5?
GH5 hands down
Had the 5DIII. To many hassles to deal with especially with RAW. GH5 image is great.

It "depends"
How much do you care about ease of use / practicality? If you do, then get a GH5!

Having a hard date to sell items happen over and over would be too scary for me..... and it might force you to sell it for less than you'd like to sell it for! As you can't hold and wait for a better offer to come along :-/

You can adapt less onto the FD mount.

Don't buy EF lenses!! But an EF focal reducer can make sense, if you're just using it as a base to adapt other things to it.

IronFilm reacted to Andrew Reid in Used Canon 1DC
Nope, depends on the flavour of ProRes.
ProRes LT for example is considerably smaller than MJPEG 500MBit/s, yet is 10bit 4:2:2. MJPEG is only 8bit!
It's a shit codec. It truly is!

IronFilm reacted to Mattias Burling in Is it still rule today to think about m43 cameras as -2x light performance to full frame
Sometimes I also notice the difference when I need to stop down a large sensor to get the same DOF as the m4/3. Which results in a darker image and the large sensor is already at max ISO. The shutter is of course fixed.
So a m4/3 can definitely have better lowlight in certain situations.

IronFilm reacted to Mattias Burling in Is it still rule today to think about m43 cameras as -2x light performance to full frame
Like I said, it isnt real life and one cant simply say, all big sensors have better iso than smaller.
But either way its not a fact at all, even with same generations. My old 2013 GM1 kills my APSC from 2016. So already the rule goes out the window.
The whole thing is absolutely pointless for me as a creator. Again, imo, sensor size is borderline irrelevant. I look at the camera and how I can use it.

IronFilm reacted to Mattias Burling in Is it still rule today to think about m43 cameras as -2x light performance to full frame
Which isn't happening in real life. At the en of the day there are m4/3 cameras that beat full frame in lowlight and ISO. And vice versa.
I only look at individual cameras and what they can do. Sensor size is borderline irrelevant.

IronFilm reacted to Dimitris Stasinos in Is it still rule today to think about m43 cameras as -2x light performance to full frame
I think you have just answered your own question. Pixel size of course matters but m43 and aps-c/aps-h cameras have a bigger target audience and bring significantly greater sales to these companies than FF, so R&D departments are finding ways to make them more efficient, regarding light gathering and also codec wise, as stated above. It's the same reason that 1/2.3 sensors are evolving quite rapidly these days.

IronFilm reacted to Inazuma in Is it still rule today to think about m43 cameras as -2x light performance to full frame
Its because of Tony Northrup and some other mistaken jebroni's that people think cropped sensors gather less light than full frame.

IronFilm got a reaction from Dan Wake in I'll need to use very old graphic card for 2 months, did you had it?
Don't go with such an extremely old card! Get yourself a modern one, I'd suggest getting yourself a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti , they are in plentiful supply, are dirt cheap, and more than kick ass good enough to handle moderate editing demands.

Anything new would depreciate somewhat over two years. You want to find yourself a really good deal, or buy secondhand.
I'd be fascinated to hear more about this Arri Alexa Classic for $12K, as I've been posting quite often pointing out they exist!!
Could you convince him to come on over to here and start a new thread about his purchase? That would be AMAZING!

IronFilm reacted to hyalinejim in Swapping the FS5 for a........ GH5?
You might be pleasantly surprised. The IBIS with non-Panny lenses is still very good. I stuck a Tamron 24-70 2.8 with Metabones XL on my GH5 and didn't notice a difference in IBIS performance compared to the kit 12-60.

IronFilm got a reaction from Trek of Joy in Rode NTG-2 vs. Schoeps CMIT5U
A little secret tip for the very frugally minded: if even an Aputure Deity is outside your price range, then grab yourself an Audio-Technica AT4073a from eBay. (Or maybe even the Audio-Technica AT4071a if you can handle the extra bulk of its longer lengrh)
As this was a very popular mic, an "industry standard" even. And a ***tonne*** of these were used by broadcasters for the Olympics (as AT was the Olympic sponsor) which ended up flooding the secondhand market and driving down prices. And unlike the other "industry standard" Sennheiser 416, the Audio-Technica AT4073a is nowhere near as famous, which has helped keep prices down even lower.

I'd disagree with DSLRfilmnoob here, as if you're paying over two hundred bucks then you failed! As with patience it can be found even cheaper ;-)
I have one myself arriving in a few days, which I picked up for a mere song.

Do you have any BTS pics of mic placement? As that is what matters the most when filming.
But yes, the NTG2 is a student grade mic (or for other non-sound specialists who just don't care about sound, such as cameramen. Which is where I use my NTG2 now, as an on camera mic when there is no other option for a scratch track. I should probably sell my NTG2 though, as I have plenty of other options for that).
At the absolute bare *bare* minimum, if you're aspiring to do this professionally and/or you just simply *care* about sound then get an Aputure Deity or Rode NTG3 as your shotgun for outdoors.
