IronFilm reacted to Cary Knoop in GH5 Prototype
Yachts: Too expensive!
Jets: Too fancy!
Jetpack: Too dangerous!
Trip to Mars: Too exotic!
Panasonic GH5: Just right!

IronFilm got a reaction from Kisaha in Has anyone here used a Rode VideoMicro?
It is just for marginally better scratch audio.

IronFilm reacted to Cinegain in Canon XC10 4K camcorder
Wasn't that the same guy that asked to get banned and went to write paid articles somewhere himself? Guess there's a tiny bit of irony there. Though, in his defence, after having cooled off for a bit he came back with a proper attitude (forgiven but apparently not forgotten quite yet, sorry bro). Ebrahim has been given a lot of chances, but I guess a soab once is a soab for life.

Very ironic clicking on these old threads and seeing posts like this pop up at the top to read first.

IronFilm got a reaction from Cary Knoop in Are Canon EF lenses still a good investment?
So will you buy a few dozen Nikon lenses as well??
There is the newer Tokina 11-20mm f2.8 as well!

IronFilm reacted to ade towell in The £3-£4K Market
Have you actually seen the image the F35 puts out, alongside the Arri cameras it is the most cinematic image you can get in a digital camera imho, it's not always about specs, the camera is a few years old now but was $250k when released. The OP was looking for a camera with film like texture and motion cadence, the f35 is still a great camera

Some people have made their own Nikon F mounts I believe?

IronFilm reacted to aldolega in The Panasonic GH5
Noooo way will Sony give us 10bit in an A7-series. They have to protect their video cameras.
4K60, yea, sure, probably. But can their processors handle it without melting the camera? And will they squash it into 100mbps? I think so.

That camera is gigantic and heavy , you also need an external recorder, and pl glass only .
Sure it as global shutter but no slow mo at all .
This camera is still overpriced as it s very hard to use if you don t have a full crew with you , they should go for 2k not 4/6k , I d rather for for a red one if I had to pick one of the two.

IronFilm reacted to TheRenaissanceMan in Lighting advice -On the cheap
Instead of redheads/blondes, look at Source Four Pars. They can be had for $60-80 each, produce excellent light quality, and are extremely versatile. Used Mole fresnels are great too--an industry standard, and so easy to work with.
A lot of people will steer you toward LED, but the fact is that tungsten is cheaper, produces better light quality, and is generally more robust than its LED equivalents. Supplement a few larger lights with paper lanterns and clamp lights, and you should be set up for a wide variety of lighting situations/styles. 1-2 small LED panels can be nice for some run and gun or accents, but most production lighting kits are 90% tungsten.
EDIT: I broke down a lot of my favorite lighting gear in this topic a while back. Most of it is budget-oriented, as I'm writing from the perspective of a student filmmaker.

You could get TWO of *both* and still probably manage to squeak in under budget!

You could always get an F3 and an A6500. It'll still cost you less than any of these other options.

I got a set of Ianiro redheads (the original redheads!) for under £150 on ebay - 3 lights, stands, scrims etc. Got a 300W Arri fresnel plus stand for around £30. Nearly a full Lowell kit - Omni, Tilta and the other one whose name escapes me, in separate ebay deals for a total of around £100. A bunch of good stands for £20. A boom and stand for a tenner. You can definitely put together a lighting package for little money if you're prepared to take it slowly and look out for deals. The only instruments I've bought full price have been a few different LEDs - there doesn't seem to be the same kind of bargain-rich secondhand market in them yet. Plus, I should mention, Lee gels are, for what they are, really cheap!
I should add, @Dustin, that I don't know where you're based, but the UK used cinema lighting market is like a tiny gnat compared to the big buffalo of the US one.

if you're in no rush then wait for the Aputure D3 microphone to come out (any day now... ??). As that should provide insanely good value.

IronFilm got a reaction from August McCue in Nikon Customers
The upside however is Nikon is the best and easiest mount to get lots and lots of native mount lenses for!
And Nikon F mount is the easiest mount to adapt to other mounts.
So makes a lot of sense to base the core of your lens collection around Nikon F mount Is what I've done myself.
I guess CES is only next month after all. However at the crazy low prices of US$1.2K ish for a D750 then I kinda doubt it will fall much lower any time soon?!

IronFilm reacted to Andrew Reid in What camera do you want to see a review of next?
The Olympus might not be available before Christmas from what I am hearing.
A6500 at least is out now.
I have the G85. That review is coming soon!

IronFilm reacted to Grimor in What camera do you want to see a review of next?
G80 for "video purposes" review is a must!

IronFilm got a reaction from John_Harrison in Narrative Filmmaking - Best Camera Options
If you're not going to use an external recorder, and you don't need 96fps, then 95% likely that the best choice for you is a G85

IronFilm reacted to Ricardo Constantino in Amazing new Skintone Control Product?
To be honest, I just downloaded it for free (don't want to promote piracy but I'm glad I didn't buy it) in a 2015 link and unless they re-done the LUT, it affects any color that resembles the skintones.
Here's an example below.
As you can see the highlights are also affected (warm +6 lut) so I still have to key the skintones if I want to change the highlights.
This is 8 bit footage from G7 for anyone asking.

IronFilm reacted to Davey in Amazing new Skintone Control Product?
At least make the effort to post a minimum 100 times a few months in advance of known product promotion day.
Funnily enough, Andrew's colour settings have been dissed by two different first time posters in the last 24 hours...

Yeah you want to avoid like the plague any of the studio versions that BMD sells, unless.... well, you want to set up a studio! ;-) Then it is going to be just great for that purpose.

DoP's certainly do run their part of the set (camera and lighting departments).
And while directors have a somewhat limited role during the actual shoot days in managing the details of running the set, they certainly do play a role in the pre production phase (a very large role in lower budget productions!).
And ditto Producers, they absolutely should understand more about the roles on set to make sure they're budgeting appropriately. Thus a bit of a diverse on set experience for themselves wouldn't go amiss!
And so much money has been wasted and so many failures in the process too......
