    Two qualities for internal recording

    1080 30/25/24P @ 28 or 14 Mbps

    1080 60P @ 56 or 28 Mbps

1080 100/120P @ 144 Mbps HQ only available DX area only.

    Slow-mo (30Px4/25Px4/24Px5) ... drops to 36 or 29 Mbps 3 min limit.

HDMI no 1080 120/100P nor slow-mo ... if 10Bit no internal card recording and no photo capture during video recording. EVF is off LCD on.

That's quite good for both slow-motion mode at 60p (56mbps) and 144mbps 120p (I would have like hdmi output). Somehow they could have upped the normal 24/25/30 to 50 mbs for example. An internal 50 mbps 422 even in 8 bit (10 bit would have been better) would be broadcast ready. I am forced to use a Ninja now.

It seems like the Z cameras are a little bit better than the A7 ones, and Fuji's a lot better than the a6xx ones.

What is going on with Sony?

Are they becoming a sensor's manufacturer?

Something similar happened to Samsung and their chipset (took over from Intel, mainly because of the memory sub-division) division.

Sony Sensor division is a separate entity to Sony photo, in fact one is clearly the market leader in a much bigger market now with cell phone etc to the other one which is a distant third. In the end Sony sensor division is much more important for Sony Corp than its camera division and they don't have any interest in loosing clients like Nikon who account for twice the number of sales than Sony cameras.

Don't really see your point Dan. Conforming footage in post has nothing to do with the speed of the sensor.

My point is that someone said that for him a camera is DOA in 2018 if it doesn't have 4k 60p and that he doesn't care that much about RS. I find it very stupid to post something like that when the subject of this post is about how bad the RS of the Canon EOS R is. When I point it out, someone tell me that RS will be better at 60p, which can be right but does not excuse a 2018 camera with that bad of RS.

Releasing a camera in October 2018 and not include 4K 60p is DOA in my opinion. I can accept the crop, single card slot and RS, but not the lack of 60p. Not when other cheaper cameras are offering it.

What, so you would be ok with that level of RS if it had 4k 60p... That's crazy, I would prefer an A73 or Nikon z6/7 to that anyday, at least 90% of my shot are not slowmotion and this thing would need to be static on stick to be anything usable.

Seemed like a mixed bag. Some third party didn’t work at all (yet), some were almost as good, some worse. The Nikkor 105 f1.4 and 85mm 1.4 performed basically the same.

Its worth noting that he’s comparing it to one of the fastest AF cameras on the planet. I wish he would have included a Z lens as a baseline for the Z7. Also wonder how it would compare to older cameras like the D800/D700/D610 et c.

Mirrorless has come a long way to even be comparable to a new DSLR. Still some ways to go.

This is the big thing, everybody is comparing it to the D850 best in class AF. I mean it is better than anything except the D5 and perhaps Cano 1dx in the whole wide camera world. Now some would say it is Nikon pricing, but if does the D850 has nearly full frame AF coverage, which would make z7 a much better camera for studio, landscape, portrait work. I could even add for general people photography where you don't have to recompose everytime. Then you can add the video, video AF, IBIS etc which are either very bad or not even present on the D850.

We don't know, a millimeter might make a big difference in IBIS, the other thing that I think is more important is the perhaps the mount size and flange distance, the rays are supposed to be straighter when hitting the sensor, so sensor has to move less could be another reason. That's just speculation, but in the end from some report it works much better than the Sony.

I wished. But getting tired of changing system and this mk2 will come in 2-4y. Wish I could stay with one brand and be done with it a few years. Latest rumors say no IBIS on A7SIII. It is starting to become a joke. We will have S1 with no video AF, A7S with no IBIS and rest of the world with no 4K60p. A joke that nobody wants to combine 4K60p FF with ibis with good AF...

The reason is simple, no company want's to cannibalize their own video camera business. People should understand that no company is some kind of saint who wants to give its customers everything for nothing. The Pana and Sony of this world have happily given a lot until now, but when you are reaching that threshold where you would reach 99% of what users would need so that many might never upgrade to their higher end camera, they start to get more conservative. For me one of the last barrier for that 99% was reach when Nikon introduced 10 bit at the Cinema 35mm and plus size. Not disregarding Pana Gh5, just about the right size would be apsc for me. If say a Nikon z7/6 came with everything they already have plus 60 or 120p 4k, how many would buy the next model. In case of Nikon, I think they are genuinely giving everything they have for that package. If it was not their first mirrorless camera and they could device one the size of a D5, perhaps they would have put 60p 4k.

    Oh yeah, the industrial shooters...

You mean 99% of shows, some like game of thrones are so industrial.  https://www.facebook.com/TeamARRI/posts/heres-an-inside-look-at-battle-of-the-bastards-its-the-game-of-thrones-biggest-v/10154274524264061/

From what have seen, 99% of amateurs will shoot RAW because they think it is going to make a difference. In fact if you can't do good to very good video/film with a 10 bit log prores file, RAW won't change anything. The garbage in front of the camera won't miraculously transform into gold just because it is raw.

  8. If someone speaks italian it would be cool as it seems very video centric.

This guy is the first that I have seen that is doing V-log, can someone tell him to tone down the sharpening or Canon is right to limit its camera vlogging to 1080p lol. He uses some sigma long zoom and in some of the shot video autofocus of the plane looks very good.

Trying to keep my hopes in check!
Guessing a DX mirrorless (with the specs I'm hoping for) around the D7500 price is much much more likely than one priced nearer a D5600 price. (but if so, that would be awesome!)

When you think about it, it is really at the DX level that the mirrorless camera would do a big difference in terms of size (lens) and even cost, because in the end a MILC is much less costly to build. I think just the cost will make them introduce cheaper APSC models, but when is the question.

Nice video from z7 and D500

It's nice enough, but really hard to get too much understanding as to how the skin tones will grade... It's almost like they uploaded the log video with no grade (maybe they did?). There is also cold blue/green cast on all the footage i've seen. Hopefully this can be dialed out with manual white balance.

Like I say, i'm not bashing it... I really want to be blown away as it could be near perfect for me.

This video I think is the highest production value that I have seen. What I like about Nikon colours is that they are normal, you can just apply a little contrast and saturation and they are good to go. If you want the more aggressive yellow and teal look you also can, but at least if you want some normal colours you don't have to tweak or apply all knind of lut.

This one is as natural as can be.

Even if we were to concede faster and more reliable AF, smoother IBIS, one to two stops greater dynamic range and 10-bit external, it would still be another twelve months before I could get my hands on a Z6 (Z7 is too rich for my blood) assuming I placed my order today - and several years before equivalents to the Sony 24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 16-35mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 or the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 are released - years during which Sony will presumably have added dozens of new lenses to their lineup and introduced bodies with even greater dynamic range and faster AF than the Z cameras.

So I think it would make little sense to invest in Nikon at this point. And if it’s true that most new Nikon lenses won’t AF with the adapter, it would probably be better for current Nikon shooters to hold onto their D850s.

And for pretty much the same reasons, if I were to put all my eggs into an APS-C system, I’d probably choose Fuji. Sony has shown a complete disregard for the a6*** series, while at the same time, Fuji has improved by leaps and bounds in just a couple generations and continues to design sensational glass.

Two or three hundred new Nikon lenses that AF with the FTZ adapter? I don’t think so. Have you had a look at this chart?

One thing that most don't understand is that those supposed cheap (performance) because they are 1.8 but costly for the 1.8 are nothing like 1.8 primes before them which have always been the entry level more affordable primes to the top of the line 1.4 -1.2. These primes are exceptional wide open like in those test

    https://nikonrumors.com/2018/09/19/more-nikon-z7-camera-reviews.aspx/

At ISO 64, the Z7 captures 2822 line pairs per picture height (LP/PH), 103 percent of the theoretical maximum.

In comparison, the Nikon D850 captured 2591 LP/PH at ISO 64 – 94 percent of the theoretical maximum.

While Nikon has been clamoring from the get go that its new mount and S line where top of the line, all those youtubers and their 5 minutes attention span followers have been dishing them a some kind of cheap 1.8 shit that Nikon was overpricing. In fact,if right now I had no big lens investment, I would look a lot a Nikon Z mount, because this clearly is a look at the future. With the optical performance of the S-line from the kit zoom to their 1.8 primes being that good, I can be very confident in the future of the z mount lens. Now when you add  that they are silent and zero breathing, with what is looking at super IBIS with the large mount, I would say that the master stroke of this launch, is not the very good z7 and hopefully z6 that Nikon has launch, but the Zmount. Sony and I guess Panasonic will struggle in the long run against Nikon and Canon with their larger mount.

I am curious to know where did you see that the Nikon has 1 or 2 stop better DR than Sony?

For $3,396.95 you can damn near buy a used Sony FS5!  These new Canon's Nikon are only going to stand out if you buy into their new lens system. Damn between a new body and a couple of lenses you are into some serious money. And what if down the road they end up being a turd?  Shutter Shock like the A7r had. They never fixed that other than never shooting at a certain shutter speed on a tripod, or hanging an Anvil off of it. I know, I had one. These are both Canon and Nikon's first effort, first try. No way they can be awesome, trouble free. You are the Guinea Pig for them.

Nikon has not had the best record as of late for Quality Control I can tell you that. From the D800 on it has been Damn interesting. I'll let you try it out. I used to be a big Nikon fan, not so much anymore.

Again, compare apples to apples. This is primarily a studio landscape photo camera with very good video. Its competitors would be medium format cameras that would cost 2 to 5 times more. For what it is for a studio fashion landscape photographer it is very good value to money.

This camera, the Z7 also cost $3,396.95. More than Twice the price of a Fuji X-T3. More than Half again as much as a Sony A7 mk III. Out of the reach of a heck of a lot of people.

But I do realize it is their top end Mirrorless unlike the Canon EOS R is. Yes the Sony A7r MK III is up there also, as I am sure the new A7s mk III will be also. Then there is the Sony A9, Gulp! But way cheaper than a true Cine camera, and if you are making a living with it, it is peanuts with the write offs you get.

The Z7 is a very specialized high megapixel camera that does video. The Z6 is clearly the ideal allrounder hybrid  photo/video camera. Perhaps if Nikon would have lauch only the z7 we could have compared it to the other cameras. But when you think about it, its a full frame camera for only 400-500 usd more. I think it is very very competitive.

    Little example of IBIS

An argument in favour of Sony's EyeAF - if we ever get an AF f1.2 lens it will be essential. Not a big deal with an f4 zoom though.

You do understand that in the last video the guy was using a 105 1.4 lens. I personally don't think that these are practical for filmmaking at all for close-ups of the face, as the example above shows is that it becomes weird to see just the eyes in focus, it might be use only when simulating someone dizzy etc.

I wouldnt be that optimistic about F mount lens via the FTZ adapter because the lens dont have the built in stepper motors needed for cdaf.

    To quote Thom Hogan.

In the continuous autofocus modes the Z7 isn’t a D850. Or even a D7500. This is particularly true with lenses on the FTZ adapter, which forces the camera to always use phase detect. In my initial opinion, the Z7 is substantively behind where the Sony A7Rm3 is for continuous autofocus sequences of objects moving towards you (even at a diagonal).

My guess is that F mount users will have to eventually switch over to S lenses if they want to take advantage of the Z mounts dual cdaf/pdaf focusing system for 'fast' and 'accurate' focusing.

His findings goes against nearly all other ones I saw. The general consensus is that the AF works as good or as bad as the lens you are using. I mean if you are using a fast lens it will be about as fast as it is on Fmount.

I mean it might be a fraction slower, but I can live with that kind of tracking everyday. In fact there are shot I would never have been able to do like in this video manually like subject moving toward me and same time zooming at 70-200 FF at 2.8.

  16. Another thing to take into consideration with lens is that they are designing them with video in mind. Those new Z lens have zero breathing. Many are still in the Nikon has no clue about video etc. In the 9-12 month when the Pana full frame etc will come out, they will still be looking just at the 60 4k  to confirm their feelings. But for me I saw a lot small touches that make me think that they are very video centric like the lens above, the second pin for anti twist plate and the preview for Nlog, which is like an inbuilt lut which will be damn good for judging exposure. I also saw an unboxing with some camera with some cable lock for hdmi.
