This is what RED should have been doing all along and I guess they started to with 4K ProRes proxies, either way...for me this announcement marks major gap in the armor for RED. Probably not "the end" as they have been silent for a while and probably have something big in the pipeline. The problem is that RED has been chasing the resolution dragon (thank you) almost exclusively. They haven't given us more FPS and they have actually taken functionality away while getting more expensive! The features of this camera are almost...silly. RED would charge $50,000 for a similar camera but an extra $10,000 would be needed for accessories.
So yeah...this is a major splash on the high end. Enough to make a lot of RED guys switch? Who knows. Will it test their loyalty? Abso-freaking-lutely.

Wow.  I went to bed last night and woke up to this..
I predicted an 8K FF camera as a semi-ridiculous joke, but I had no idea that it would turn out not audacious enough!!
My comments in the 1080p thread are interesting in this context though.  We are playing the megapixel game, but very few are giving high-bitrates to downscaled resolutions, but if this is giving 4K RAW downscaled from 12K then the image should be spectacular, while not requiring the computer to be able to push 12K pixels around.
This would make it a hugely flexible camera - yes you can shoot 12K RAW if the project warrants it, but you can also shoot 4K RAW with no crop at great bitrates and bit depths for projects where post needs to be more cost effective.
Also, if the colour science is great, this could put them on the map as a serious challenge to ARRI / RED.  Then they'd have to nail the reliability in order to actually take market share, but it's a shot across the bow nonetheless.
BM are thinking big - they do it with Resolve every year, did it with the pocket cameras since the OG Pocket, and now at the high-end too.

The color separation is fantastic - distinctive browns. yellows and blacks which don't loose subtle color shifts from lighting even when crushed.   I think there is something special going on here and I will love to hear from folks on how they feel it grades compared to other cameras.

It does a full sensor readout even in raw on the lower resolution, since it uses a full RGB pattern sensor, so basically you get insanely clean and sharp 8k, 6k, and 4k since they are all downsampled from the full 12k resolution.

To be fair, I was very appreciative of their sage advice in that video not to listen to the biased opinions of people with relationships with manufacturers and certainly not to trust early reviews from these people.
Its almost like Canon never took them on a trip to Hawaii to see the EOS-R, gave them a FREE one to giveaway as a click and subscriber booster on their channel and put out a review so speedily it was actually shot in their paid for hotel room isn't it ?
    Almost.

It is exactly this kind of attitude that normalizes and ultimately rewards the behaviour of these shills. By letting them get away with it.

If anyone wonders why Nikon Z system didn't catch on for video you can blame people like Wolfjoke.
This gets called out for being wrong in his reviews but never does anything but try and create more clickbait.

This thread is insane. All this over a chart without any actual tests.
I remember buying the a6300, a7s2 and a7r2 despite the internet overload about overheating, single card slots that no professional would ever use, 8-bit 4:2:0 video with blotchy zombie skin tones, crop on everything that's not 24p, only 4k30p and so on. I live in Florida and never had any issues despite using it on a gimbal all the time in the sun and shooting longer takes, it doesn't take much to swap batteries or turn the camera off when not in use, or not leav it sitting out in the sun all day. I took them to Africa on safari shooting thousands of frames and hours of video, also took them to Dubai, Egypt and Israel in August when it was upwards of 125f. Now we have a camera that shoots 8k raw, 4k120fps with amazing AF, class leading IBIS and can even shoot 45mp stills with bursts of 130 raw images or infinite jpegs if that's your thing, and its trash because you can't shoot an entire wedding in one take?
    Wow.
Can't wait for the shitstorm with Sony's cripple hammer on the a7s3 and the pendulum to swing back to the R5/6 and how "I can work around the issues, its worth it for raw and 120p." This reads like a Sony Alpha rumors post.
    LOL!

Nice reading comprehension buddy lol. I clearly said the r6. I could care less about the r5. People that want to bash the r5 just have an axe to grind like you.
The r6 is everything we have been asking for and beats every camera out there and yet crickets. Destroys the xt4 in nearly every respect and I remember what kind of audience that camera got on this site lol. You're a joker mate.

You were gushing like a fan boy and talking out of your ass, I'm not sure what you expected. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Sony doesn't need to match the R5. If they can put out a camera that doesn't overheat and is reliable then they've already beaten Canon, specs be damned. It's not a high bar, regardless of what your fandom tells you.

Granted he is outdoors and it's summer but...
Here's a "review" by Vistek. They only had the R5 and R6 for two hours but he couldn't get to testing 8k video before the camera overheated (4:50). Take a look at the LCD panel while he's got the camera in video mode. A flashing red thermometer is seen in multiple clips.

And this here sucks even more - so even after shutting the camera off, and waiting 20 minutes, you will only get another 8 minutes recording time:

andrgl reacted to rawshooter in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Well, Canon writes that you will get more than 20 minutes only when the internal temperature of the camera is lower than 14 degrees Celsius - that's 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Unless one shoots in Alaska or at the North Pole (or in a refrigerator), that's unlikely to happen.
It even seems as if the 23 degrees Celsius/74 degrees Celsius refer to the camera's internal operating temperature - then your real-life recording time will likely be much shorter than 20 minutes.

I knew there was something wrong with this. I thought Canon was going to leap forward but who were we kidding. Think about it. Canon always wants to protect their cinema cameras. This makes working filmmakers go ugggg I can't work with that and come up with more to buy the new cinema cameras.  And the main target is hobbyist/prosumer who want the best specs on paper or a photographer who want to grab a shots that the quality will hold up to the quality of the stills.
It not meant for film or video production. They do not want it to be. But they want those specs to get the people to buy the R5 but are also the people who would never go all out and buy the C500 MK II because they have no real need for it.
It keeps a strong divide from Professional and Prosumer customers. Prosumer want the best specs to show off there toy but don't have a reason to spend the pro level. Pro level needs stuff to work and are willing to spend for it. Two separate groups to sell two separate products too.
After reading about this I have no interest in ever using this camera on a set, its not a video or cinema camera. My inexpensiveness GH5S do amazing work for docs and B-Camera with my Red Gemini in a pinch or crash cam. Ill stick with Panasonic because they do have the best balance of both world or Pro and Prosumer.  Maybe I will look into the DC-S1H or the next generation as a replacement.
