ntblowz got a reaction from Trankilstef in Sony A7S III - First impressions
With more LIDAR AF Add option popping the AF on Pana will be non issue, especially if u use cine or anamorphic lens, the AF from camera is not going to power those manual only lens.
And most mirrorless AF lens is really bad at manual focusing, its good that Pana have the option to select focus through/non linear etc.

I'm still thinking about maybe switching to Sony or Canon for better AF in video cause I am often shooting as a one man band, and AF would be very appreciated. But I can't help thinking that my Panasonic S1H and even my newest S5 after the future firmware has still the edge in video besides AF and slow motion:
    - much better color science
    - much better IBIS
    - better video tools (waveform, vectorscope, shutter angle, etc)
    - a unique LCD implementation (tilt and swivel)
    - 6K (though I don't really use it that much but still)
    - very useful S35 crop mode in 4k and even pixel pixel in 1080p
    - no overheating whatsoever
    - better tactile implementation (Sony improved it a lot but still not the same quality as Panasonic and Canon)
    - 4k DCI
    - better ergonomics (arguably Panasonic has the best ergonomics of all the hybrid full frame cameras, and I say this as a former A7III and Canon EOS R owner)
    - Possibility to choose linear focusing and even the length throw with native lenses from Panasonic and Sigma recently wich is not possible on Sony lenses
    - better hybrid usability if you need to shoot stills and video
    - Timecode
    - Real anamorphic recording modes
    - ProRes RAW up to 5.9K (up to 4k in the Sony)
    - Etc.

So yeah I'd be glad to have a better AF, but truly giving up all those things I listed before, it feels like I would downgrade in some ways.
@andrewreid what do you think of the comparison. As of now, what would you choose between those two?

ntblowz reacted to Lux Shots in Frame grabs from my first (and maybe last) feature GH4/GH5
Here are some frame grabs from my first feature length film Bad Decisions. I started on the GH4, then shot some scenes on the GH5. I will finish this next year with the S5 and S1H if COVID-19 doesn't turn into COVID-20. 😬 I'm probably going to go straight to Amazon Prime. My budget thus far has been $10K and I have another $3K or so for the last two scenes.
As so many of you know, no ifs, ands or buts about it; filmmaking is fucking hard!  This is probably why this is my last one. I've been discouraged so many times that I had pretty much decided to delete the whole film and just quit altogether. But looking at these grabs, and knowing that I lit that, I blocked that, I wrote that, I shot that and I directed that gives me the courage to complete what I've started. It would be nice if I break even, but even if I don't, I can say that "Hey, I did that!" And boy I didn't do that alone! I had so much help from friends, family and complete strangers that it's too much to even count! They were angels, there just when I needed them, and for not a moment longer,
There was one scene, that I was shooting straight guerrilla style. I needed to shoot on three city blocks at night, and I had to light it, and there was a gun scene that kinda made me nervous for the safety of the cast and crew. We have no permit process in my city, so I went to the police department, and explained what I was doing that night, and they were like "Ok".
As soon as it got dark around cast and crew call time was at 6pm. We went to the neighbors houses and let them know what we were doing. We started blocking, and laying down markers for lights tripods and actors. It got dark at 9pm, and we started shooting. We were shooting in moving cars, had special effects, and every scene was lit. We even faked a window getting shot out. We wrapped that scene at 5am the next day, right before the sun came up.
Do you know for the entire time we were shooting, not a single car drove up any block visible? It's like we rented 100 homes, paid everyone to stay inside and blocked off the area for a 1/4 mile radius! God was most definitely on my side that day, and it was one of the best scenes in the entire film!

    Equipment cost < Business Profit
Look at high end equipment later. Start getting customers first... start charging a rate that covers your hours put into it + equipment rental rate (estimate).
If you get enough customers then invest in equipment.

So I don't know if this has been posted yet in this thread but here are some files from the C70 to play with :

I don't know for you but I hear people complain about the difficult Canon codecs and files to edit compared to say those of the Sony A7sIII but I have no problem editing in real time those files on my computer.
Speaking about IQ, it's quite good, the amount of noise in the shadows is minimal, it's a pleasure to grade those files.

Well I saw on L Mount Rumors this morning that the first of the new f1.8's is due in just a couple of days, the 5th November to be precise and some of the specs have been leaked:
Is that Polish, I don't know but weight of 355g is good. Very good.
Filter size of 67mm is also good as it's the same as the 20-60 so crossover.
Is that length of 82mm (without lens hood), because if so, also good!
And if as it seems to be, the 24, 35 and 50 are all identical in size, even further good news because what this camera needs is some fast (enough IMO) compact glass!

The timing! I’m in the middle of making my own similar device, with a raspberry pi zero, only mine will offer both LIDAR-based AF for my Pocket4K as well as SteadXP-type stabilization using a gyroscope and accelerometer.
Mine is for me though, no plans to sell, so we can skip the cease and desist letters.
I am also working on an iOS app for the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max that will do the same things, use the phone’s LIDAR to control BMPCC’s af as well as record movement with gyro and accelerometer for stabilization. That one will be available soon.

Finally get hands on the c70 at local Canon event.  The lighter setup is definitely welcomed over c200, AF wise I think it is just slightly better, not as sticky as the R5 I use.  The digital IS can turn on by itself so good for lens without IS.

Shot on the S1 with a 1/8 black pro mist (side interview shot is GH5) and some 16mm grain added in.
Heavily graded but if you have a bit of color grading knowledge then the S5/S1/S1H is a big step up from GH5 (not to mention low light capabilities). I think the v-log on the S series has a more organic quality than any of Sony, Canon's, Fuji's current offerings (less sharpening).
Just bought the S5 as a 2nd camera so look forward to testing that out.

2010 and 2020 is quite a lot of difference
The house price went from avg $440K to $950K here, but the wage didn't increase double. As result of that more people just do civil marriage or smaller weddings, and the number of people getting married is down each year as well, while more wedding videographer pop up each year as equipment is getting much easier and cheaper to aquire.  So more people grabbing a shrinking pie.

We done jibs before too, album covers, poster etc, and even rent Red Helium.  Just the overall trend of wedding market is down in general. I stopped wedding as my main income around 2016, I  only do second shoots if my video friend need help, otherwise i just defer inquiry to my friends as it just not worth the hassle for me when I get better return elsewhere.

Regarding the 180 degree rule... I honestly think it’s best used on 24, 25, 30 frames footage as it gives it the “illusion of movement/blur” that works in our collective memory (and at 30 the motion is already so fluid that it matters less). But on higher frame rates you are already messing with reality and time so if the blur is not there is a lot less objectionable. If you are not slowing down 50 or 60 frames, the motion is already hyper-real so it’s a different aesthetic in itself and the 180 rule can be thrown out the window.

Yes, with the focus motor support it can work on any camera or lens combination.
In that respect, the camera is just acting as a mounting point for the LIDAR sensor !
Obviously you only get the focus control rather than the additional full control of ISO,WB etc that you get with the BM cameras.
