ntblowz reacted to Andrew Reid in Sony A7S III – 10bit vs 8bit 4K/60p
In 99% of cases there seems to be little benefit to using 10bit other than more difficult to edit, larger file sizes.
10bit is one of those easy to get excited about specs on paper. It’s a bit like the amount of memory in your PC or the speed of the CPU.
    The higher number, the better!
What actually makes the difference when it comes to image quality? Well it’s a bit complicated. RAW is the ultimate codec, and the ultimate pain in the ass. LOG is great, no question. Lots of dynamic range, small file sizes, easy to edit and to apply a LUT. And for great LOG you need 10bit, right?
Well it seems that on the A7S III the difference is much of the time impossible to even see.
Not that this was not already proven by the Canon 1D C and that infamous MJPEG codec. The 8bit Canon LOG mode on that was incredibly nice. Fast forward nearly 10 years and there’s far less difference between 10bit 4:2:2 and 8bit 4:2:0 on the Sony A7S III than you might expect.

I'm always glad to see people doing actual tests on these things! Thanks Andrew. I don't really see any difference in the pictures you posted.
I did quickly grab some images with my Z Cam. I can't do the same format in 8 and 10 bit, so I compared 8 bit H.264 at 120 mbps vs. 10 bit H.265 at 60 mpbs. Big difference there... here's a 1:1 crop of the sky dropped 4 stops in post and no other color adjustment. 4 stops is a lot, but not unreasonable for exposing a Zlog2 image particularly with high dynamic range. Lots of very ugly colored bands on the H.264 and actually it looks worse with the full image. It might be worth comparing your highlights as well as shadows, especially in log footage. I don't see any banding in the shadows in my image when pushed, just in the highlights.

So I will agree with @jghardingthat it will vary camera to camera, and encoder to encoder.

The weight is a good thing in my view.  I had to do some off-the-cuff hand-held shots with no rig.  No micro-judder!  None!  I decided to build some more handheld into my project.  Built like a mirrorless, but really handles like a camcorder.

eta: I was using the A60 (or whatever the larger battery is called) though.

Shadow integrity is phenomenal on the camera.  Would make using the (otherwise excellent) previous gen cameras like the C300 mkii, and the C200, a bit of a pain now.

Agree about the official Canon LUTs - they are a disaster.  Not quite sure how they've allowed that to happen.  I actually genuinely believe some of my early concerns, re: highlight rendition, etc. may have been down to how people have been applying the official LUT! 😲

Would recommend trying out CLOG2 over CLOG3, as the latter is really designed to protect shadow in a way that isn't really necessary with DGO.

I m really impressed with C70 so far on this one limited shoot, the black is soo bloody clean! And the Stalman lut is really nice, more pop and nicer uniform skintone unlike Canon lut which can go over the place.

Next few weeks will have some big project, so eager to shoot with it!  My R5's only grace is IBIS and FF look..

Used the C70 for a shoot for the first time recently.  Very impressed.  I honestly think that Clog3 is pretty much redundant in this generation because the shadow detail is rendered so clean in Clog2.

ntblowz reacted to Alpicat in Making a retro style factual program with Panasonic S1H
I've started working on a new series of slightly light-hearted youtube videos which parody old British factual / educational TV programmes (i.e. inspired by Tomorrow's World, Look Around You etc...) - complete with a classic continuity announcement after the end credits. I'd been doing synth music demo videos and simple camera tests on this youtube channel for years, but wanted to try something different and hopefully a bit more creative, and also to be able to collaborate with friends.
Here's the first video. It's not perfect but was a helpful exercise to see what I can potentially improve on in future. Let me know your thoughts!
I used the S1H - shooting in 6K. Shame I added the retro filter as it looks amazing without it, but I thought it went well with the video's style - won't be using it on every video in future though. I'm also using stock footage for b-roll from a website I'm subscribed to, which hopefully fits the style of the video.
The text was written by a friend many years ago for a university radio show. Maybe we could have revised it a bit to make it work better for the screen - will keep that in mind in future.
My channel's main topic is synths so I've kept that theme in this video, having composed the background music with one specific synth.

Na, as we are already locked into Canon eco system so not really, my other friend just ordered FX6 to replace his Usra mini Pro G2 though, probably could do a quick compare once his FX6 arrive.

Nice! We got TVC and a MV shoot at end of this month so I got lots of days to familiar myself with C70.

Dont have chance for a shoot yet, I did quick test in the office and quit impressed with DR on clog3... more cleaner than c200 we have.

This showed up Friday.  Of course, it was supposed to show up Wed and I had a job Friday I wanted to use it on. Oh well. Probably best to get some more time than that to get familiar with it before using it as an A cam on a job. Maybe I'll use it as a b-cam on a shoot this coming week
that's lower stakes than what I was shooting Friday.

Since the middle / end of last summer I've been making a feature length documentary. I have 3 more shoots to do, and then it can be finished. However I wanted to share a small teaser I've made in anticipation of sending it out to festivals etc.
I'd love to hear all feedback, comments, criticism etc. Please don't be shy!

ntblowz reacted to Video Hummus in Canon R5 new 1.3 firmware ads CLOG3, Raw light and IPB light
After CLOG3 was added I don't have many complaints. It strikes a nice balance of offering more highlight recovery than clog1 while keeping shadow noise low for easy workflow. I'm sure technically its still behind latest Sony Cameras but comparing them is starting to feel like splitting hairs in 90% of situations. Lots of other things matter after that. Plus we have compressed RAW lite now, and with a bit more effort in post, some amazing results can be achieved for a mirrorless camera (especially one from Canon).
I think after stepping back and looking at the whole package that is the R5 and after having used it for several months now... It's pretty sweet. The 4KLQ thing was massively overblown it was ridiculous. People zooming in on tests charts 200% or 400% and saying it looks like crap (it does). But in the real world after YouTube compression or H264 delivery there isn't that many downsides to using it.
Not to mention the RF mount ecosystem has a bright future with RED KOMODO and future cinema cameras from canon...perhaps Blackmagic will join RF too?!
I would like to see cheap 20/24mm wide F1.8 primes and an updated RP with clog1 and perhaps no crop FF 4K for a replacement for the M50 style camera. A quality, powered digital hotshot mic would be nice with that setup too to keep things lean or at least open up the protocol so Røde, Deity, or Sennheiser can make products for it.
    R5 4KHQ, RF 24-70mm, clog3/cinema gamut.

ntblowz reacted to Emanuel in DJI Mavic Air 2S coming soon with 1inch sensor
«The DJI Air 2s will bring some upgrades compared to the Mavic Air 2. While the manufacturer still installed a half-inch small 48 megapixel sensor for photos in the Air 2, this will be upgraded to 20 megapixels in the successor (without Mavic branding). On the other hand, at 600 grams, the drone is 30 grams heavier than its predecessor. The manufacturer also brings the 10-bit color space into the camera. This means that over a billion colors can be recorded.
With “Intelligent HDR”, the manufacturer has brought a function into the drone that “automatically combines several recordings in order to increase the dynamic range of images without post-processing”. The drone also supports a hyperlapse and a panorama function.
As you can see on our renders, the drone has a total of four rotors, which can accelerate at a maximum of 19 meters per second (as with the Mavic Air 2). For this, the drone can be operated up to a maximum of 6000 meters above sea level. The internal memory is again measured at 8 gigabytes. For video makers, a new feature has now been integrated with “Master Shots”, which executes ten different maneuvers of a subject and makes short recordings. The subject always remains in the center of the picture. The drone supports the well-known standards “Spotlight 2.0” and “Point of Interest 3.0”, but the drone also introduces “ActiveTrack 4.0”. Simply put, this is tracking an object.
DJI Air 2s: Also interesting for FPV beginners
With the new Air 2s drone, the autopilot is also being upgraded to version 4.0. It detects foreign objects in all four directions and avoids them. The “FPV Goggles V2” known from the new DJI FPV drone are also supported by the DJI Air 2s. Accordingly, the drone also supports the new “OcuSync 3.0” transmission standard, with which the rendering in the glasses should run smoothly. To avoid airplanes or helicopters, DJI uses the “ADS-B” signal transmitter to receive a signal from nearby airplanes.
The battery has a capacity of 3,500 mAh, this has already been confirmed by an FCC entry. The drone comes in white, an exact price is not yet available, but it should be over 800 euros. The presentation will take place in April 2021.»
