A Merry Christmas from EOSHD

Aside from those very odd Pentax users I'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a happy new year resolution of buying more cameras. What is on your wish list and how are you spending the Christmas holidays? š3 points -

Thanks for the wishes of you all here! : ) In this year I lost my best friends ever, my father and dearest aunt, a mother to me, hope 2025 may only become better than this 2024... No complaints at professional level though... Five/six awards (the 6th 'cause we're working on a sequel of a previous TV series not yet under my umbrella by then despite a determinant role in the nomination towards this prize this time) ten days ago for two feature movies shot in NZ and Macau, China, respectively, as producer with two of my partners in crime by this scribe of yours too. North of Portugal. My brother's new home. With my core family of three, brother, sister-in-law, nephews and his brother-in-law, sister-in-law and respective mother, very likely. Our mother is still recovering from a surgery two weeks ago, the 2nd one this year from another fall and same broken leg... so the youngest will be with her instead. Just life, I guess. While waiting for my FX30 next week arriving from a U.S. trip, Osmo Pocket 3 (have you already bought this jaw-dropper?) and their really small and handy accessories are the ones I regret today to not have discovered earlier from the previous model anyway. As never enough to have been reported before, that larger sensor, 4K 100/120fps and 10-bit D-Log M (even 4:2:0) are a thrice must : ) 4th axis stabilizer just to mention one of the plus size : D of this little toy is simultaneously-plainly-and-luxuriously a simple joy... : X The set of filters and extra add-ons, no less ; ) Testing all of them for these holidays! : P Happy Christmas and the best 2025 to everyone! EDIT/PS -- @Andrew Reid Thanks for extending that infamous 5-minutes editing limit here, serves to share more in the same post and in age of a big fail to twitter/X model without useless multiple posts so dispersive and annoying I intend to believe LOL :- )2 points -

I don't have any plans to upgrade in 2025. Two C70s is plenty for me. If anything, I want to shoot more little passion projects with c-mount lenses on my EOS-M. I've also joined a screenwriting group and purchased an old AlphaSmart word processor which seems a much better place to spend any time and energy that is not sucked up by work.2 points -

The holidays haven't been the same since my Mom passed in 2016, but I am trying to make the most of them after beating cancer last year! As far as cameras, I think I am set for 2025. I MIGHT swap out my two S5s for S5IIs, depending on how the year goes. Not that I am unhappy with my S5s, it would just make matching them with my S5II X in post easier. I also might snag a S9... we'll see! But overall I am pretty settled until I see how things look next year or in 2026, as far as Lumix goes. What I have (two S5s and a S5II X) are honestly cameras I could use until the wheels fall off and I'd be happy with them, I'm more just looking at the long term big picture as far as where I end up. Happy holidays to all of you!2 points -

What is Lumix thinking?!
Ninpo33 reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Yeah, the only affordable third party lenses are the manual primes that companies like TTArtisan have made for RF, E, and L mount. From what I've seen they are pretty good, too, but even those are a little pricey when you consider that the TTArtisan 50mm f/1.4 is only a hundred dollars less than the Lumix 50mm f1.8 when it's on sale. I think it's probably worth spending the extra $120 to get the Lumix with auto focus even though it's a little slower. Hopefully Viltrox, Meike and others that released auto focusing lenses for E-mount start releasing them for L-mount. I think it'd be a kick in the arm.1 point -
Merry Christmas to you all! Spending time with family. It's been very sweet. I studied some of my footage from this year. The og pocket smokes the S1H in available daylight for colors and ooc textures. So maybe the Lumix has to go. Still shaking my head how easily the og pocket grades. So no camera purchases planned but instead selling a bunch of things. @Ninpo33Many years ago I read that the Tomioka is sold by total rip offs for total rip off prices and that's not worth a fracture of those. There must be a Revuenon 55mm 1.2 for much less money.1 point

Not much point having a S35 mode for a VV/LF 4K sensor if you want to shoot 4K S35, as it's impossible. That's not what I'm seeing, I haven't worked on a production with a Mini LF in a while. ARRI 35 are far more problem. I think most people saw the Mini LF has stop gap measure that ARRI had to rush out so they could shoot "true 4K" (not upscaled 4K such as the AMIRA or Mini did), a demand that numerous productions (such as Netflix) insisted upon. Of course once the ARRI 35 came out then that both solved the native 4K issue and gave the shooter a better camera as well. Doubt we'll see that happening within the next decade.1 point

Leica SL3 / SL3-S

Well if that was the case I would scoop it upā¦!!!1 point -
I wish the S9 and the X-M5 would have a little love child. X-S9? The Panasonic IBIS, full frame sensor and autofocus. Anamorphic support and LUTS but 6.2k open gate Raw to the Ninja V+/Ultra like the Fuji. Color presets for JPEGs and the $800 price. If Panasonic had given us raw out of the HDMI it would have been too much though I agree. For Fuji to have left in the same specs as the XS20 and XH2s is nuts.1 point

Absolutely no new cameras in 2025. Chord Electronics will be taking my money as I need to upgrade my audio system. (Indeed, a couple of cameras less - FX30 & BM4kStudio will head towards MPB). Seasonal felicitations!1 point -

Merry Xmas everyoneā¦!!! Up in the California mountains for the week renovating our ski cabin with the family, (3 dogs and two cats) Really warm this year with only one real snowstorm back in November so kind of an odd winter for us. Iām back in analysis paralysis as far as camera gear for 2025 goes. Bouncing back and forth between doubling down on cheap, dated LUMIX gear with a Leica SL2 thrown in for high res stills or being more sensible and getting the S1R to hold me over for a bit. Or⦠finally jumping to Fuji or Sony. Fuji feels more fun and Sony feels more sensible and boring. Plus the high prices for what specs you get just feels rough after coming from LUMIX. Dream cameras on my list right now are the GFX100ii with an X-H2s for fast moving stuff and high frame rates. Little X-M5 for fun personal stuff and a backup camera for the bag. Or the A1 marked down to affordable levels and a ZV-e1/FX3 for a tight little travel kit. Iām finishing up a documentary in Japan this year and do a lot of solo, run and gun stuff so the Sony AF should be high on my list. Instead Iām doing my usual though and going after the weird quirky stuff. Anamorphic and speedboosted vintage glass. Chasing after high quality stuff on the cheap. Iāve been having fun with lenses in the meantime and scooping up a lot of my bucket list vintage glass while the yen is down in Japan against the USD. The Konica 57mm f/1.2 and the Yashica Tomioka 55mm f/1.2 have been unobtainable for a long time but I was able to score remarkable deals this year on those two. Canāt wait to nail down my next camera bodies so I can start playing around. Hunting for a GFX100s sub $2,000 this week but also have the black X-M5 in my cart from Japan with kit lens for $800. S9 is on sale for $900 though so Iām going back and forth between the two. itās actually pretty amazing that for under $2,000/$1,500 you have some of the best technology out there from all the big companies right now. Weāre quite spoiled.1 point -
You can use three frame markers at the same time. Richard Wong says att 2.25 that it works in both photo and video modes. And he shows how you can customize the frame markers.1 point

What is Lumix thinking?!
IronFilm reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
I think L-Mount's weakness, re: lenses, is in a more affordable/consumer sense. Sony and Canon have a lot of options, for all price brackets, that L-Mount doesn't hit. I think Lumix has a bigger issue than not having affordable lenses that average users can get (namely getting their cameras into the hands of average users to begin with) BUT it probably doesn't help. Average users, and heck, even some enthusiasts, don't always need f1.8 or f1.4 lenses. A bargain set of compact f2.8 primes wouldn't hurt the system, I don't think. With that said, their current lenses are excellent and are among my favorite I've ever used, as far as new lenses go. I also think they are excellent value for what they are, though I know some people can't get over how much more expensive they are vs. their Sony and Canon counterparts, particularly the f1.8 primes. But the build quality and optical performance of the f1.8 primes blow both Sony and Canon's out of the water. Still, price often is what dictates people's spending habits. I do wish Tamron would enter the L-mount, but I have a feeling that they don't because Sony owns a piece of them. They've rolled out lenses for pretty much every other mount at this point, even RF, so there has to be some reason for that. I suppose you could argue it's because there isn't a big enough customer base, but Fujifilm might have an even smaller one and they've released lenses for them.1 point -
Agreed. L Mount is pretty good now especially this year with the Sigma 28-45mm f1.8 and Sigma 28-105mm f2.8 becoming available and probable purchases for me in 2025. Pretty sure I am going to go for the 28-45 as I need something faster than f2.8 for low light work and though not as fast as the 50mm f1.2, has more practical real world use for me. The 28-105 I am still on the fence over and depends on whether an S2R appears. If it does, as a LUMIX version of the Leica SL3, then itās a done deal and I will trade my Sony A7RV and 3x zoom lenses for that combo as it will cover 95% of my needs as a āone and doneā and that last 5%, at the extreme ends, will be my compromise. But if there is no S2R, then there will also be no 28-105 for me either because although it is available in Sony E Mount, I would rather have my smaller trio of Tamron zoom lenses for that compact Sony body. All pieces of the greater puzzle.1 point

I don't get "there aren't any lenses" talk. There are less lenses available than to a Sony shooter but there are plenty of lenses and more are appearing all the time. What lenses do most people really have? A 24-70 f2.8, maybe a wide or tele zoom depending on their work and 2 or 3 primes. You can easily have a decent L mount kit that covers most needs.1 point

It is the Fotasy C-LL adapter I use... Infinity focus is ok. 3.3K is the resolution at the crop required for Super 16mm on the Panasonic S9 and S5 II. But you also need to enable IS + E stabilisation HIGH to get from 1.6x 3.3k to over 2x This is to avoid a vignetting which moves about with IBIS. And the image is 4:3, close to the 1.65:1 of an actual Super 16mm film camera, so you have to crop it in post if you want 16:9 and so on.1 point

Edit: it's actually 3K raw, not 2.7K with a 2.75x crop.1 point

Something is nagging at me to go back to smaller sensor
Leon Postma reacted to kye for a topic
Please don't. This is one of the main challenges for society - the people who care about truth enough to learn anything about the world self-censor when they realise they don't know everything or make mistakes. Meanwhile, the people who don't care about truth and don't know very much about the world continue broadcasting at full volume unabashedly.1 point -

I only have to assume you're editing this stuff too. Once you're trying to edit footage from an inexperienced shooter using stabilization, it'll drive you mad. So many good shots wasted by the false stabilization shift. "Oh! This looks like it's going to be nice pan to the... [image does an ugly shift/hitch] ... ah fuck!"1 point
