The people defending Canon seem to have a problem with people expecting the bare minimum from a camera.

No one expected unlimited 8K recording (I'm not sure why this was brought up in a post about the R6 but OK.) Everyone expected some limitations on such a feature, but they didn't think it'd be "hey, you can record for 20 minutes in *70 degree* weather, but then you'll need to let it cool down for 20 minutes to be able to record for another 5 minutes" or whatever the numbers are. Why didn't any of us expect that? Because it's not practical! And if a company knows there's that big of an issue, one should expect they'd do more to remedy it BEFORE releasing it to consumers.

If you can't match the functionality of a 3 and a half year old GH5 then what are you doing? And full frame 4K without a crop isn't an excuse. Asking for a camera that doesn't overheat isn't unreasonable.

Nope.  It's all about people jumping on a negative and having knee jerk reactions.

The GH5 had crippled specs that for all purposes were the same as an iPhone doing 4k at the time.   Yes that's extreme but as long as you see 4K 10bit you think it's equal to cine 4k 10bit and its not.

Maybe wait and see what the limitations are before jumping off the cliff.

I will start this off by saying I am a huge Canon fan, I recommend Canon gear to pretty much anyone starting out in photography and waited years for Canon to get their act together so that I could replace my GH5 with a Canon mirrorless for video gimbal work. Every spec that was leaked about the R6 seemed to indicate that it was going to be the no brainer replacement for my GH5 gimbal camera work....until all of the specs were revealed. I had only 3 real requirements for the R6 since I already knew it would have excellent AF, color science, and video codec options:

I hear ya about the Canon fan club, I'm in it also.

How does the C200 hold up to the GH5?

    Quote

highlight rolloff is atrocious in WDR scenarios, the color science is a pain to grade in post, and of course my number one problem is the fact I need to use MF at all times when shooting with it which means I'm throwing away an unacceptable amount of footage and working overtime to keep the talent in focus during complex gimbal movements.

I personally won't use the GH5 for this reason.   I don't care how many specs are included it doesn't fix these issues and the issues above make the Gh5 un-usable.

The whole purpose of hybrid cameras is so you don't have to go spend C200 money and can keep rigs smaller.

Maybe don't leave your gear in 120 degree Florida heat.

They claim the same here, 90 minutes for line-skipped 4k30p recording

If we film the same footage with the R5 vs the S1H and R5 has Canon's secret sauce color science, then my footage will be better with the R5.  Plus the missed AF shots on the S1H won't be usable.

Color and image quality are still what matters to clients and to the art of film making.  No one, no one cares how you get great footage.

If the R5 is unusable, all of you will hear it from me.

You know even camera's that cost 10 times as much have the same IR issue(RED)? Its not even an issue, you use a IR filter. I guess most camera's are flawed in your perspective, oh gee I cannot shoot at 1.2 during a sunny afternoon because its all overexposed, yeah guess what "the ND filter was also not included".

IR/far red contamination issues with RED cameras does not mean those RED owners don't address it does it?  It more the fact that P6K owners on the EOS and You Tube don't see IR/far red contamination issues in P6K footage.  If they are using a IR Cut filter they also clearly can't see if it's the right one to use with the P6K.  It's not one size fits all or fix all.

RED color science blows BM away and especially the P6K.

Don't quit your day job to do stand up because you're not good at it.

I'm not sure what the big complaints are.  Really, any camera in this form factor having these insane specs is probably going to suffer some overheating issues if you push it to the limits.  If you need to record 8k or 4k/120 for more than  20 min, then you should be getting a different dedicated cinema style camera and not a hybrid.  Also, it should be noted, that these were all pre-production R5's that people have been testing so overheating issues could be much improved in final versions.

Also at this level, people typically record to external recorders like the Atomos Ninja V (for 4k only), which resolves the 30 min recording limit and could also help with the overheating issue.

Yes and NO and Maybe is my response to your opinion.

We don't really know how 8K from the R5-R6 image quality will be yet.  The 120p @4K looks amazing.

With all this spec talk the #1 goal should always be image quality.   I think this gets lost because we still have the gap between hybrid cameras and cine camera image quality.  No one on here has busted out the P6K or GH5 on a super cool creative job (maybe we all have but no one has shared that quest with us).  This is the reason why we are still looking for the next camera with awesome specs and equal image quality.

Not why the S1H, S1 or P6K don't check the boxes that would create massive sales that have mega movie productions adapting these camera as the only option.

    Huh???

I quite like the image out of my S1. Much better than out of my Sony cameras. People who are far more talented than I have said that the image out of the S1 / S1H is basically equivalent to that out of the BMPCC6K and it seems that the image has more latitude than the 6K.

Yeah, the AF is disappointing. On the other hand, if you go with Panasonic lenses, then you get minimal focus breathing, and they are VERY close to being parfocal.

Also, if you are using AF to do focus pulls, they are VERY smooth. Maybe that was one of the reasons they decided to use contrast detect / depth from defocus? It's like the lens ramps in and out when doing focus pulls via AF.

Also, i guess one man's specs are another man's useful features. The EVF and the LCD on the S1 are quite a joy to use. The IBIS is great. It's nice that you have TWO zebra settings (although on the S1 it isn't quite as capable as the S1H in terms of zebras). Waveforms are very helpful (false color would be better though).  Full size HDMI port.

And the camera is rugged. I know this first hand 😞

Don't get me wrong: still lots of stuff I would love to see changed / improved on my S1. But it is certainly more than just a bunch of specs.

I will try and do some research on image quality between the S1, S1H and Z6.  Has anyone found out if they share the same sensor?

I've filmed action oriented talent that AF tracking captured amazingly.   How is AF tracking on the S1?  Is it just focus breathing that's an issue for locked AF?  I had a Panasonic rep demo the S1's AF and while he was telling me it worked perfectly, it failed on the spot.

No I don't have an extra $2K a for a focus puller and rig.  The one thing hybrid cameras have over cine cameras are the size and AF tracking.

If Panasonic could fix this one issue then I would be sold on them.

When even part of the Canikon duolopy has a cheap FF camera (the Nikon Z6s) with 4K 60fps, then Sony had better have it with the new a7Smk3!

They can try to ignore the Panasonic with their S1 & 4K 60fps, but you can't ignore Nikon. You'd hope this also means the Sony a7mk4 will feel the need to have 4K 60fps in it as well.

Likewise the GH5 will no longer be part of a small select group with 4K 60fps, the GH6 should for instance has 4K 120fps. (even if they were to stick with the same sensor for the GH6, the GH5 sensor is capable of it as we've seen with the Z Cam E2-M4 and 4K 160fps!)

Given R6 specs and price point it seems the Z6s is positioned as a useful update.    The Z6 already had IBIS and RAW out, so these new additions look better based on what Canon and I bet Sony will do.

The Z6s needs to have 10bit internal recording across the board also.

Exactly. They wanted to make a workhorse m43, they put a huge heat sink there, they wanted a workhorse full frame camera, they added active cooling. The only reason Black Magic 4/6K cameras are that big, is the cooling solutions.

It is not a coincidence that normal video cameras are quite big, at least bigger than the common mirrorless. It is well known that maximum performance's enemy is heat, look at the cooling solutions in PCs.

Quite obviously this is not a video workhorse camera, it is a great photocamera with a good showcase of what is coming in the C series.

Panasonic should get credit and applauded for the engineering behind the S1H.

    No other recording modes.

And with most cameras external recording modes can be unlocked via firmware.

The problem is when information from genuine professionals is messed up with disinformation from trolls.

You can look at the sample video I posted.

Yes you need a IR filter with BM cameras but most assume it's only if you use ND filters.

It is so well documented that BM cameras need IR filter I find it hard to believe any person working in the industry is not aware of this. It is down to you to hire crew who know what they are doing if you haven't a clue yourself

It's up to the crew to provide cameras that delivery usable footage.  The crew did not deliver what was promised.

IR pollution is on all BMP6K footage to some extent.

Look at 7:00 in on this video.   The right side of that dress where the sun is hitting has IR pollution cast over that dress.  All scenes with that dress and direct sunlight show this.

I've actually grown to hate that BMP4-6K vintage look they produce because they colors are so off.

But that's actually not true - other cameras such as the Panasonic S1H record oversampled 10bit 4:2:2 Full Frame 4K  without any thermal issues.

You basically got three options now:

    1) Sony A7iii: oversampled 4K, but only 8bit, passive cooling

    2) Panasonic: oversampled 4K, 10bit, with active cooling

    3) Canon: 4k 10bit, but only with line-skipping/binning if you want continuous recording, passive cooling + "turbo" or "burst" modes with overheating issues

I wouldn't put to much stock in Panasonic and it's 10 bit 4:22 FF 4K data rate and image quality.  The gave us 10bit on the GH5 which didn't hold up to other 10bit samples once it was compared in the real world.  The same group of people at Panasonic know if they throw enough specs at the public they will over look broken AF and defend the camera until end days.

Dude once again, that is on you and not the camera. You know you need to shoot with an IR filter on a bm camera....

Offcourse they are still selling them as they are brilliant cameras for an amazing price.

Of course they are still selling them with the IR issue.  Brilliant is not the word I would use for unstable color.

That links does not work in the quote.

I did go back and see the response you wrote about your own hdmi question.

Firmware would easily unlock the other recording modes to and external recorder.  Unless this isn't technically  possible I'm not worried about the R5 overheating issue.  External will be the way to go.

Out of curiosity, what happened with the BMP6K's? I have a BMP6K and 2 4Ks that I have used for hundreds of hours on countless shoots and I haven't had any trouble with them in ages. I had one of the 4Ks drain the battery and turn off when on external power on one shoot, but even that hasn't happened in over a year. I use V-mount batteries and record to T5s and I haven't had any issues to speak of in ages. Just curious about your issue so that I can be on the lookout.

We had various degrees of IR pollution issues with the P6K.

New blog post with the latest test results.

    https://www.eoshd.com/news/the-canon-eos-r5-overheating-impact-on-different-types-of-filmmaking/

The 4K/120p goes for 15 minutes.

What I need to test is whether you can shoot 10 seconds here, 20 seconds there, with short breaks in-between for the duration of a shoot.

Because if that produces too much heat we are truly stuffed.

Would an external recorder solve the overheating issue?

Might this be the SAVE that Canon could use?

You literally have no idea what you're talking about! I've already answered all your questions but you keep flogging a dead horse. You must have very little experience of shooting interviews.

I have used all sorts of cameras for all sorts of different jobs - from tiny client work to feature films to short docs for VICE - from crappy DSLR's to cinema cameras. Whatever the job calls for. That's why I know what is needed for interviews.

If you are focussing on "what camera I use" and think that's what makes a filmmaker, that confirms your naivety. It's a problem with a lot of talk on this forum - confusing technical camera knowledge for filmmaking.

I'm asking what camera you use right now.  Do you have a camera that you own or what cameras do you use for your interviews.

    That's all I'm asking.
