leslie reacted to CfFilmmaker in Best APSc camera with 4:3 mode and x2 squeeze
Have to add this here because I think there's some confusion on crop factors, lens focal lengths and 4:3 shooting modes.
First misconception I see is that "not having a 4:3 shooting mode means you are loosing resolution if you shoot 16:9 because you crop it later". You aren't, in fact. If you do the pixel math you'll find that either way, you are cropping the same amount to reach your desired aspect ratio, the only difference is one is being cropped by the camera to create the 4:3 and the other you are cropping in post. Though the BMPCC 4k doesn't yet have a 4:3 mode, you can still use 4:3 guides to help you see what you need to keep in frame ensuring you don't crop things incorrectly in post. In fact I'd say shooting in 16:9 is awesome because you can reframe things horizontaly if you need to. If you have an external monitor that can do 2x desqueeze (like this one here for $110 http://www.cinemartin.com/monitors/7inch/loyal/lt/)  that's even better to use with those guides.
Second misconception is that "anamorphic on full frame is worse compared to anamorphic on a crop sensor because you can't use wider lenses thus limiting your field of view". Your field of view on any given anamorphic is set based on the lens you choose. I'll give an example:
The Kowa 8z clears full frame 2.4:1 with a 50mm lens. That same Kowa on a m43 sensor can be used with a 25mm lens. If you take into account the sensor's 2x crop factor, it has an equivalent field of view (assuming no speed booster is used). This means that the only difference between anamorphic on full frame and on crop sensors is what taking lenses you have or are willing to buy for the anamorphic. Some of the best 50mm 85mm, and 100mm vintage lenses can be had for less than $60, so this wouldn't be a barrier to me. Since the camera body is the most expensive part of the process, start there and you can get the rest to work with it.
One final thing to add is a note on the nature of anamorphic footage and their added field of view. Tito Ferradans mentioned this once on a forum and it blew my mind! Anamorphic lenses squeeze vertical information into a smaller area that then gets decompressed later. This means that if you are shooting on a 2x anamorphic, your horizontal field of view is going to be 2x as much as a normal lens that focal length. To use my earlier example, a 2x Kowa 8z with a 50mm taking lens on a full frame actually has a horizontal field of view equal to a 25mm lens! Kind or crazy. So don't flip out if your anamorphic requires an 85mm lens to clear vignetting, you actually can see a lot more than you think.
Hope this helps anyone who's trying to make a decision on what to get! Anamorphic lenses are about feeling more than they are logic. It's not logical to carry around a train of lenses, diopters, filters and single focus modules along with all the other film gear we use. There are so many modern lenses and cameras that you can point, shoot and get great results. Anamorphic is a decision to do something the hard way because of how it feels, both to us, and if we do it right, to our audience.

All the Sony FF cameras have the crop mode which ends up a 1.5 crop, just like their APSC cameras are. That way you can use the E mount lenses on the FF stuff which are called FE lenses. And that works out to be pretty close to s35.
And Real Cine cameras are All over the place in what they call s35 if you look at the graph below. So digital cameras wise anything goes for s35. The Canon C100, C300, C500 which by the way all use the same sensor, is one of the Few cameras that are really the old film dimensions in the modern era.

odd that you mention that just now.... i just bought an el nikor 63mm enlarger lens. been waiting for one of these to turn up at a reasonable price for awhile now. i guess my lens addiction is off to a good start this year?

yes that is so poignant and true, not to mention hilarious on so many levels ( one can only hope that someone from bm sees this and perhaps gets galvanized into action) that's definitely  most interesting and inventive take on a camera release, someone should probably post that in the sony fanboys thread, i'm sure they would react with total awe
edit : im eagerly waiting for the letter part 3 the unboxing

pros : they fast acting... unless badly targeted
    cons : can be noisy
i have guns however i own a farm and they do get used for dispatching sick animals and feral animal control. the vast amount of people in this world do not need guns. if you need a gun for protection then there is something fundamentally wrong with your society. more guns wont fix that all you'll get is more mourning on both sides of a bad equation.

Magic lantern is making a lot of progress with 3K+ on the 5D mark 2!
Seems what happened with the 5 year old mark III in 2017 is now happening with the 10 year old mark II...
    3K announcement: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.msg205638#msg205638
Initial 4K progress (10.5 frames per second): https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.msg208417#msg208417
Initial 5K progress (6.5 frames per second): https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.msg208355#msg208355
The 5D mark II has always been limited to 30fps, but there is also some progress in getting higher framerates:  https://twitter.com/autoexec_bin/status/1048804509827452928
The forum user reddeercity has some builds on that thread.
I am super excited about this, even spent 100 pound on a new motherboard to fix my camera.
Video I made using the 3K build:
Shot in 2880x1080 resolution, Graded + converted to ProRes using MLV App (https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App), edited in Pitivi on linuX.
Lenses: Jupiter 9, Helios 44, Takumar 135mm, cosina 19-35 (for one shot)
If anyone wants an MLV or DNG or something from the video I can provide.

leslie reacted to KnightsFan in which are pros and cons of proxy video: editing, color correction, color grade and crop
A proxy workflow is what you make of it. Essentially, you create an exact copy of your entire project in a format that plays back smoother on your system. At any time, you can toggle between using the "online" media and the "offline" media. If you wish, you can do ALL your post production on the proxies (editing, color, sound), and only toggle back to online media for the final export. Or, you can do some editing, switch to online media, do some color, switch back to proxies, do more editing, switch back to online media, edit more--etc. Or you could use proxies to edit, switch back to online media for color correction and export, and never use the proxies again.
On the other extreme, you can do a proxy workflow where you never switch back to the online media, but then it's called transcoding.
You can make proxies for any format. You can even make your proxies BE in any format. You can make HD ProRes proxies for 8k 10 bit H.265 footage, or 4k H.265 proxies for an HD ProRes project (not sure why you would want to though...).
That's all quite abstract, though. In practice, proxy capabilities depend on which software you are using, especially if you are using the builtin proxy generator. In Resolve, if you use Optimized Media (essentially, proxies) you can switch between optimized and original media at any time, like I described. However, you are limited in the formats that you can make proxies in, and I've often found that Resolve "loses" optimized media all the time. Personally, I make proxies in ffmpeg, and manually switch out which files my timeline uses. That way I have maximum control over the proxy format, and can easily troubleshoot problems.
A decent workflow should allow you to do crops/reframing and variable framerates without issue, but it depends on the software you use.

In general, the only pro is smoother playback while editing. However, proxies are also a huge benefit if you have a remote editor and need to send files over slow internet connections. My 500 GB project is only 10 GB in proxy form. I can use Google drive to send the entire project to an editor, and all they have to send me in return is an XML.
Cons are a messier workflow, having files become unlinked if your workflow is not perfect, tons of headaches. But all of those problems can be avoided if you know what you are doing, and rigorously test your workflow before using it on a project.

There's a couple of projects I've done with that lens and P4K/Ursa but they're not available online yet. Here's one where I used almost exclusively lenses with distinctive bokeh, however it was shot on the BMCC2.5K and 5DMK2 (ML RAW). In this one I used the aforementioned lens, Super-Takumar 50/1.4 and a Petzval 85/2.3 to max out the old film noir kind of feel.

to generalize i think with 16/9 you can squeeze it 1.33 times and 4/3 you can  squeeze it 2 times . you could also squeeze 16/9 2x however you would have really wide video and have to crop it later you would probably have wider black bars top and bottom as well. thats my limited understanding of  hows it works hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in shortly with a more technical reply. i might go read andrews reids anamorphic ebook again it may have some info that would be relevant.

Pairing the Pocket 4K with some good vintage glass is pretty blissful. There's been a lot of talk about how it looks more digital and modern than the previous BMD cameras - and yeah sure, I guess it's not as organic and grainy as the 2,5K. But throw on some c-mount glass or a speedbooster and old Pentax stuff and the camera sings. Haven't used it with this kind of setup on a production yet, (it's playing second fiddle to the Ursa Mini and been on a gimbal on about half a dozen shoots now) but I'm just having a lot of fun taking it on a walk and just taking some throwaway nature shots. It's something I used to do back when I used the 5DMK2 regularly, and I'm happy it has revitalized that habit again.

This was taken with the speedbooster and a Pentax 35/2.3 M42 lens on a cool winter afternoon. One of my favourites due to the very distinctive, oil painting-kinda way it renders out of focus areas and the transition between them and in-focus areas.
