Depends what he wants to do with the photos. For online publishing and small prints 12MP is adequate, I think.

Despite the poor specs of the 150mbps LongGOP codec it does hold up very well in grading. Mainly I think due to it's 10bits which make the luma channel near immune to banding unless you apply insane curves or tonal shifts and bends. The main reason to avoid it is the stress it places on most editing rigs trying to decode it on teh fly for smooth playback. The 400mbps codec is better in this respect but still harder on the CPU and GPU than ProRes or DNxHD. Given that most people will expose and color balance near optimally and not treat it as RAW the inadequacies you describe are purely academic and do not translate into real world problems. Until other mainstream manufacturers adopt 10bit 4.2.2 internal codecs the GH5 is well ahead of the game at the moment and a joy to work with compared to ubiquitous 8 bit 4.2.0 codecs with often even more compression.

Would be so great, my husband (hobby Photographer) has the LX100 that I got him years ago for his bday. His 50th is coming up, this would be a nice gift together with the Japan trip I got him. Excited!

I am not aware from what culture you are coming from but calling names to people you do not know, is not a good start to make friends on a new environment, and as you are new to this forum, we have debated and argue about the lack of any ergononics (whatsoever) on a6xxx and A7 cameras for hundrends of pages. Just do a little research and you will also find my opinions there.
The only Canon I own is the AE-1 and a set of FD lenses, so I have no horse in this race, but for professional reasons I have to use Sony cameras all the time, and they are seriously lacking in so many respects, that I do not have the time to state here but are very well documented here, and in other forum and special press articles.
The market seems to favor these Canon cameras, and I do agree, as these are perfectly placed (cost wise as well) for entry level and slightly more advanced users, together with the ultra cheap and quite good 11-22, 22mm pancake and maybe the 55-200, and the kit 15-45 is sufficient for such a use. Small, light and cheap.
You obviously disagree, but you can state your disagreement with a milder and more civilized manner, and be ready to face different point of views.

    @MdB haha! That s a good one!
Seriously, have you ever use a Sony camera??!!
There are millions of pages on the net about the worst ergonomics, button placement, menu system and touch interface (not!) in business.
Unfortunatelly, from time to time I have to work with an A7 camera, and the difference between those and my NX1s are night and day.
A few weeks ago we were shooting with some A7s cameras, and I asked the owner of the camera to change something and it took him several minutes to find the menu and change it.
In any segment Sony has issues with their ergonomics and menus, that applies to C100 vs FS5 and C300 vs FS7, in my humble opinion of course.

Yes, versatility is the priority aim of the game. The camera setups needs to cover almost every scenario possible, as that's how my work is going. Everything is so different that one camera can't do it all.
The main thing that bothers me most about the Sony package are the internal codecs being weaker (should I need them at any time), and that's about it.
With the Panasonic package, mainly it's the cropped 4k 60p and 240fps, only correctable by purchasing wider lenses (which in the high quality range are very expensive).
I wouldn't ever intend to use the A7 cameras for green screen work. I do also have a BMPCC 4k on pre-order.
My comparison chart still says the Sony package edges it (to cover ALL situations), but not by much.
May have to test the GH5 properly on a gimbal.

I use the  PL15/f1.7 and the Laowa 7.5/f2 (and the 45-175 zoom) with my GX80 as a very small travel package.  All lenses have the same 46mm filter size, so I used the same step-up to my 58mm NDs.  On the Laowa, I get some obvious vignetting due to my filters and magnetic adaptors - will look at that for next time.
I have an example when I'm walking with the 7.5mm using the GX80 IBIS - I was carrying a lot of beach stuff and probably could do better.
Here are some unedited (4k 25fps 1/50s shutter, AWB) screen grabs shooting Cine-D from the 15mm (first 4) and 7.5mm (second 4).

Ultimately I think Oliver should consider versatility; he'd cover pretty much every base with the EVA1, GH5S, and GH5, with auto focus being the only thing he can't really make up for. His options are pretty much limitless when his 'b' and 'c' cams would have features that aren't too far off from his 'a' cam and could easily be swapped in and used for a lot of the work he is going to be doing.

It feels as though you're more interested in attacking me, as opposed to what I'm saying. It's great that you don't need these features shooting your hobbyist videos in the cafe or bar you frequent, but they're incredibly useful for many of us.
The bulk of my work is for independent wrestling organizations and wrestlers. Getting footage of the performers doing their signature moves, flying through the air, etc. in 4k 60p is a huge part of what I do. The Sony a series cannot do that. I don't need to intercut 1080 60p with 4K because I have a very capable camera that can give me the extra resolution AND frame rate I need. That's kind of the point.
I do green screen work for those same organizations and wrestlers. 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 blows away anything the Sony cams can do for this kind of work. It's simply on a different level.
They are, as I said, things that I simply could not do with the A7iii and a6500. I'm not sure what part of that is difficult for you to understand?
These are similar things that Oliver talked about doing himself. My experience I felt was relevant, so I shared it.

This is why smartphone cameras should use a square sensor.
Then no matter which way you hold the damn thing, it can do landscape 16:9 video with same horizontal field of view.
Phones are easier to hold in portrait so you can't blame the general public for using them that way round

    Have you been kidnapped?!?
Much of that might be true, however 10 bit 4:2:2, 4k 60p (adding the ability to do 4k slow motion with his b and c cams), 6k anamorphic, etc. are all features that the Sony a series simply can't match, whereas many of the Sony benefits can be closely achieved through adapters, etc though obviously not matched.
The GH5s is a very capable low light camera, and gets very close to full frame with a speedbooster / adapter, which he's going to be using anyway since he wants to use Canon lenses.
I just think it makes more sense when you're going to be doing a lot of chroma keying, slow motion, and studio work to have b and c cameras that are far superior for that kind of stuff, while also being more than adequate for other jobs (I've used sets of GH5s for live multicam streaming sporting events, and they worked beautifully, especially when not hindered by recording limits when going back to do a cleaner / better final edit.) The weaknesses of the GH5 and GH5S can be dealt with pretty easily, whereas you simply cannot achieve with the a6500 and A7iii several important things you can do with the GH5 series, most of which are so incredibly useful to the type of work he has said he's doing.

Yes but in 3 years smaller sensor cameras like the GHx will be for 4k 120p, 12bit, maybe even raw, and 960fps in 1080. Spec-wise I think they'll always be a step ahead.
I believe the smaller sensor/m43 will always win for adaptability, IBIS, slow motion, higher bit rates etc, not to mention the gap closing on low light performance - all it takes is an optical focal reducer like a speedbooster to get a kick arse full frame (ish) camera, or use natives and instantly get incredible telephoto reach without breaking your back. This is how I currently work and its a dream. I'm a huge advocate for the m43 system despite being a Canon 5D shooter all my life and now even with an a7iii.

This! I opted for the MFT system with the GH2 back in the day because I would be able to keep lenses small (which is the real thing that keeps a camera set-up compact). Of course you can frankenrig things up when the situation asks for it. Of course we haven't exactly been wow-ed by the sensor performance throughout the years. The GH4 you'd still have a hard time pushing past ISO800, but as you said, since we've seen leaps in improvement, mostly in terms of high ISO noise performance and color. Dynamic range with V-Log L and HLG has gained a slight advantage, but that's really the area where it still needs a bit of a way to go. I'm confident however that the next generation will leave little to complain about on a sensor performance level. You could argue that they need to change tactics when it comes to C-AF, but that's just not much of a dealbreaker to me personally. But it's of course a missed oppertunity getting people on board who do think it is.
And Panasonic/Olympus just know how to make epic camera bodies. Both GH5 series cameras and the E-M1mkII have a weathersealed grippy camera body, vari-angle touchscreen, nice menus, tons of customization, dual cardslots, full audio interface, awesome batterylife etc, to me it honestly doesn't get much better than that. And again, great lens ecosystem to go with it with a wild range of lenses in all sorts of sizes and quality for all sorts of budgets (same actually for the camera models; in comparison: Sony has seen 2 generations of mirrorless APS-C where there was just the 1 body (and not without issues)).
Back to the topic title. The DSLR market is dying. All they need to do is take their APS-C/FF line-up, drop the mirror and OVF and stick on a new mount. Of course, mirrorless is also greatly related to innovation, so IBIS, 4K60p, LOG, elaborate focus & exposure aids and overlays are definitely the way to go here. But in essence, they aren't really changing their game too much, it's just about ditching traditional DSLR for mirrorless. When it comes down to Panasonic/Olympus, they're already doing mirrorless and I'd even go to say that they do it well. I agree that the smaller sensor is a USP of the system and do not think them jumping FF as well needs to be a thing. But of course, the more options the better...

I don't think Panasonic should jump on the FF bandwagon. I think their smaller sensor is their unique selling point. The GH5s sensor has proven you can squeeze high iso/low noise performance out of a smaller sensor and this is only the beginning really. I think the smaller sensor allows them to push video tech faster - like the GH5 have 4k60p, who knows what is capable in the GH6 but I think the FF cameras will always be playing catch up to the smaller sensors cameras in that regard simply because they can process that information faster. Chuck a speedbooster on and problem solved.
I'm shooting with a GH5/speedbooster XL and a new A7iii with mc-11 - both using my canon L glass. Much prefer the GH5 for video. that 10bit is amazing.
What Panasonic should be doing is keeping their m43 mount cause there is some amazing compact glass for it but do what JVC did and chuck a Super 35 sensor in there. Imagine that with a speedbooster. All the benefits of a faster, smaller sensor but full frame look.

It's not enough anymore to say the C300 "creates great images" because, at this point, you can use a $500 G7 to create great images. Are there things about the C300's image that are better? Of course, but when it comes to the standard of image quality, virtually every camera maker has gotten to the level where you can get results only dreamed about 10 years ago AND on a budget!
We truly are fortunate / spoiled, given we're even able to have this conversation!
