This is why smartphone cameras should use a square sensor.
Then no matter which way you hold the damn thing, it can do landscape 16:9 video with same horizontal field of view.
Phones are easier to hold in portrait so you can't blame the general public for using them that way round

    Have you been kidnapped?!?
Much of that might be true, however 10 bit 4:2:2, 4k 60p (adding the ability to do 4k slow motion with his b and c cams), 6k anamorphic, etc. are all features that the Sony a series simply can't match, whereas many of the Sony benefits can be closely achieved through adapters, etc though obviously not matched.
The GH5s is a very capable low light camera, and gets very close to full frame with a speedbooster / adapter, which he's going to be using anyway since he wants to use Canon lenses.
I just think it makes more sense when you're going to be doing a lot of chroma keying, slow motion, and studio work to have b and c cameras that are far superior for that kind of stuff, while also being more than adequate for other jobs (I've used sets of GH5s for live multicam streaming sporting events, and they worked beautifully, especially when not hindered by recording limits when going back to do a cleaner / better final edit.) The weaknesses of the GH5 and GH5S can be dealt with pretty easily, whereas you simply cannot achieve with the a6500 and A7iii several important things you can do with the GH5 series, most of which are so incredibly useful to the type of work he has said he's doing.

Yes but in 3 years smaller sensor cameras like the GHx will be for 4k 120p, 12bit, maybe even raw, and 960fps in 1080. Spec-wise I think they'll always be a step ahead.
I believe the smaller sensor/m43 will always win for adaptability, IBIS, slow motion, higher bit rates etc, not to mention the gap closing on low light performance - all it takes is an optical focal reducer like a speedbooster to get a kick arse full frame (ish) camera, or use natives and instantly get incredible telephoto reach without breaking your back. This is how I currently work and its a dream. I'm a huge advocate for the m43 system despite being a Canon 5D shooter all my life and now even with an a7iii.

This! I opted for the MFT system with the GH2 back in the day because I would be able to keep lenses small (which is the real thing that keeps a camera set-up compact). Of course you can frankenrig things up when the situation asks for it. Of course we haven't exactly been wow-ed by the sensor performance throughout the years. The GH4 you'd still have a hard time pushing past ISO800, but as you said, since we've seen leaps in improvement, mostly in terms of high ISO noise performance and color. Dynamic range with V-Log L and HLG has gained a slight advantage, but that's really the area where it still needs a bit of a way to go. I'm confident however that the next generation will leave little to complain about on a sensor performance level. You could argue that they need to change tactics when it comes to C-AF, but that's just not much of a dealbreaker to me personally. But it's of course a missed oppertunity getting people on board who do think it is.
And Panasonic/Olympus just know how to make epic camera bodies. Both GH5 series cameras and the E-M1mkII have a weathersealed grippy camera body, vari-angle touchscreen, nice menus, tons of customization, dual cardslots, full audio interface, awesome batterylife etc, to me it honestly doesn't get much better than that. And again, great lens ecosystem to go with it with a wild range of lenses in all sorts of sizes and quality for all sorts of budgets (same actually for the camera models; in comparison: Sony has seen 2 generations of mirrorless APS-C where there was just the 1 body (and not without issues)).
Back to the topic title. The DSLR market is dying. All they need to do is take their APS-C/FF line-up, drop the mirror and OVF and stick on a new mount. Of course, mirrorless is also greatly related to innovation, so IBIS, 4K60p, LOG, elaborate focus & exposure aids and overlays are definitely the way to go here. But in essence, they aren't really changing their game too much, it's just about ditching traditional DSLR for mirrorless. When it comes down to Panasonic/Olympus, they're already doing mirrorless and I'd even go to say that they do it well. I agree that the smaller sensor is a USP of the system and do not think them jumping FF as well needs to be a thing. But of course, the more options the better...

I don't think Panasonic should jump on the FF bandwagon. I think their smaller sensor is their unique selling point. The GH5s sensor has proven you can squeeze high iso/low noise performance out of a smaller sensor and this is only the beginning really. I think the smaller sensor allows them to push video tech faster - like the GH5 have 4k60p, who knows what is capable in the GH6 but I think the FF cameras will always be playing catch up to the smaller sensors cameras in that regard simply because they can process that information faster. Chuck a speedbooster on and problem solved.
I'm shooting with a GH5/speedbooster XL and a new A7iii with mc-11 - both using my canon L glass. Much prefer the GH5 for video. that 10bit is amazing.
What Panasonic should be doing is keeping their m43 mount cause there is some amazing compact glass for it but do what JVC did and chuck a Super 35 sensor in there. Imagine that with a speedbooster. All the benefits of a faster, smaller sensor but full frame look.

It certainly can't hurt! Even learning just the basics is a good skill to have. It will help get the most out of the tools and resources that are available to you, especially if you use something like the TAKSTAR so it sounds nicer.
It's something I've personally been working on, and have spent the most time learning.

Of course, but when it comes to the standard of image quality, virtually every camera maker has gotten to the level where you can get results only dreamed about 10 years ago AND on a budget!

One thing I noticed about YT microphone reviews (from people who don't know much about audio) is that they tend to be judging the EQ of the microphone instead of the quality of the sound overall.  I'd hear a microphone and think it would be fine with a bit of EQ and then the person would say something like "it sounds thin and hollow - not even usable!" and I'd just roll my eyes.
@IronFilm is this something you also see across lots of reviews?
In a way it's like filming in RAW and then saying the camera footage looks "too grey - not even usable!!".

The micro is really great for Sony and Panasonic cameras, but not so much for Canon. You're going to want to get a mic that can add +20 dB so that you can turn your camera audio levels down as far as possible. I've been using my friend's Azden SMX-15 and I really, really like it.

Just finished my a weekend of shooting with the Liliput A5 for the first time, and I really liked it! Was a nice screen (in fact the B cam would often be using it for himself! Rather than for its purpose: to be pointed at me, so I could keep an eye on the B Cam shots), seemed to be battery efficient (I think? I wasn't doing battery management though, that was B Cam AC's job) while being super small and lightweight.

For its price (only US$149!) I think this was an awesome bargain buy.

Correct, it uses a smaller portion of the sensor. I haven't done the math but it gives ya that little extra reach without quality loss. I'd test it out, you can assign it to a button to turn it on and off when you need it. It's also useful when using vintage lenses that don't completely cover the sensor.

Here is the first time I ever tried one, a Fujinon 19X f 1.7 with the 2x  extender on my Panasonic AF100A.  Picture of rig above. Had a 50 dollar B4 to m4/3 adapter on it. They can be incredible sharpness wise. I paid 150 bucks for it because the zoom motor was burned out from Adorama. Pretty common on them. There is a switch where you can disable the power zoom so works by hand easy. If you can find one like the picture below that says AT2 that is a newer version of the lens. It is HD. I had no problem even in 4K on my G7 with that lens.
This is Fuji description of AT2 lens. So as you can see they are pretty damn good even for HD and better.
"AT2 Aspheric Technology Many of Fujinon's HDTV and broadcast lenses feature Fujinon's AT2, which combines the company's exclusive Aspheric Technology with a new inner focusing system to greatly improve lens performance over conventional designs."
I can also say the Panasonic AF100 is a hell of a great camera for as low as 600 dollars. Amazing output using a native m4/3 mount, decent AFS AF also. Tons of knobs, buttons. A true Cine Camera for peanuts. Great learning tool.

I'm not asking where you hide your gear or if it's under your bed. I just want to know what kind of shelf or cabinet you use, if it's always in the bags, or if you have built something DIY.
I always had my cameras and lenses in a ikea kallax 4x2 shelf but I can't store my bags and tripods there, so I'm looking for another solution. Maybe a small wardrobe.

    Thanks for the notes.
A great deal of The Resident is shot handheld with an Ursa Mini Pro and APO Hyperprimes from SLR Magic. We rig it in what I call “football” mode.  Body, wooden camera cheese plates, Dbox, MDR, battery, lens and side handle.
I try to keep it as small as possible. Attcahed are a couple of shots I was operating on a pilot in Chicago a few months ago.
A lot is also shot with a minimally rigged micro camera, WC cage, self pulling with a 10mm SLR Magic lens and a 5” VA for monitoriing on an arm.  Idea being to keep it all very small.  There’s a picture here showing the way I work that rig here mid-take.  It allows me to get the camera inside the surgical feild and very intimate.
We work really hard on making the medical stuff as real as possible. It’s a real prop in that case.  Most of the extras in surgery scenes are realy life OR nurses and surgeons.  We have surgeons as consultants and we make a lot of prosthetics to be story specific.
We have to take some liberties though, usually for time.  I mean it’s a 47 min TV show
I recall with the scene you’re talking about that graft would normally take about an hour to install and sew.  Mina gets it done in a few seocnds ?. The whole procedure would take a few hours.
So we try to get the spirit right and we try to be very explicit and accurate with the medical depictions. We still get. alot of medical people flaming the show for not being “right” but usually they’re more upset with the way we depict the shortcomings and failings of the US medical system ?
We shoot, edit and master in 1920.  Fox does the downconvert.  You can get 1920 versions from other stremaing services though.

Well well we all have to admit as of late the line between "Professional" and "Consumer" have really narrowed. When I was most of you guys age you either worked for a place that did video, or you bought a $200.00 at the time spring powered 8mm movie camera. If you were rich you had a Bolex, or my dream camera, a Beaulieu 4008 ZM Camera. They made beautiful looking cameras. Not too many choices compared to today.
Now with the 4K BMPCC coming out it can nearly compete with rich people on an equal footing. The GH5s is amazing, the Sony A7 mk III is, the ML Canon 5D mk III, Canon C100, on and on. We live in an amazing time for video. It is now down to skill more than gear. The tables have leveled. No real excuse these days to not get the job done.

I got the A5 in a rush (after finding last minute that the Ninja 2 does not work with the NX1), and have been shooting with it every day for the past two weeks. I'm pretty happy with it. Regarding the discussion of the brightness, it's adequate. I've had the brightness at 50% and it's viewable outside for framing and peaking, though it's no match for an EVF. All in all I would totally recommend it to anyone on a budget who doesn't want a massive 7" monitor. But make sure your batteries work before using! Here are my pros and cons, loosely in comparison with the Feelworld FW760 that I used to use.

+ Smaller but still 1080p. 5" vs 7" is a huge difference - and also it has thinner bezels and is thinner so it's actually much much smaller.
+ MUCH lighter. Makes my setup more balanced
    + HDMI out
+ Mounting points on three sides
+ Screen is fantastic. Focus peaking works very well.
+ It remembers settings through power on/off cycles. The FW760 would reset everything if it powered down.

    - The battery plate is finicky. It's not a problem for me since I power everything from a power bank (I didn't even own any batteries for my FW760). It will not work with a Wasabi LPE6, but it will work with an Ipax LP-E6, even though BOTH of those batteries power a 5D3 perfectly.
    - Plasticky. I think the FW760 felt a little sturdier, but not by much. However, the mounting points seem secure and it's not going to fall apart in your hands. Sort of the build you expect from a screen this price.
    - Only one customizable button.
    - False color does not have a color scale on the side, so you have to guess what IRE each color corresponds to
    - The 1/4-20 threads are too shallow. I had to put a few washers on my friction arm's thread.
    - The hot shoe mount that comes with it is junk.
    - It would have been really nice to put one of these on the back: https://www.amazon.com/SmallRig-Camera-Threaded-Monitor-Accessories/dp/B01NCK79G2 . I had one on my FW760 and then used a lock washer on the friction arm to keep it from accidentally rotating.

The Leica T touch screen interface is a breath of fresh air. You instantly see the current settings and tap to change any of them, without tapping a d-pad endlessly through a long list.
There's also still a latency to the Sony UI that is completely unacceptable in 2018. As if it is running on a slow processor, or with a lot of background tasks.
The bottom line is, Sony should have fired their UX team a long time ago.
The HFR mode (esp. on the RX100 M6) is another example of why they should all be fired.
The standby mode is unnecessary, first of all, if you are triggering the shot the normal way start/stop on the record button. Also it's not clear enough when you are in standby mode, yet there is text all over the screen and any half brush of a control brings up a prompt telling you to exit standby mode... so you press the key to exit but that just dismisses the prompt... So you think you've existed and start adjusting the zoom, exposure or whatever, and it just comes up with the shitty prompt again, like an endless loop of frustration. That would be a sackable offence at any of the other major companies in their user interface teams.
If you look back to the Sony A900 the menus were fine. Simple, logically laid out and clean looking.
Maybe they should not have replaced all those Minolta engineers who understood photography, with people from the thermostat division.
