  1. Have you been kidnapped?!? Much of that might be true, however 10 bit 4:2:2, 4k 60p (adding the ability to do 4k slow motion with his b and c cams), 6k anamorphic, etc. are all features that the Sony a series simply can't match, whereas many of the Sony benefits can be closely achieved through adapters, etc though obviously not matched. The GH5s is a very capable low light camera, and gets very close to full frame with a speedbooster / adapter, which he's going to be using anyway since he wants to use Canon lenses. I just think it makes more sense when you're going to be doing a lot of chroma keying, slow motion, and studio work to have b and c cameras that are far superior for that kind of stuff, while also being more than adequate for other jobs (I've used sets of GH5s for live multicam streaming sporting events, and they worked beautifully, especially when not hindered by recording limits when going back to do a cleaner / better final edit.) The weaknesses of the GH5 and GH5S can be dealt with pretty easily, whereas you simply cannot achieve with the a6500 and A7iii several important things you can do with the GH5 series, most of which are so incredibly useful to the type of work he has said he's doing.
  2. You might get similar results but not identical. Like IronFilm said, they all have specific uses where you'll be able get the most out of them. I believe that Curtis Judd has done reviews on all of those you've listed, so I'd check out his YouTube channel.
  3. I own most of these ha ha. The 7-14 is a great lens, though the f/4 isn't ideal and you're not able to add any filters easily. Even in video the auto focus isn't a problem, mostly because everything is in focus due to the aperture. It doesn't have a ton of distortion (though it does have a little) at the wide end, which is really nice. I wish it were weather sealed though! The Sigma 16 mm is a beautiful lens, possibly the sharpest native MFT lens ever, however you might find instances where it simply isn't wide enough. The Samyang/Rokinon 12 mm is a great lens, though it's fully manual. It also might not be wide enough for you all the time. I don't have the 15 mm. The Laowa 7.5 mm might be a good option, depending on how wide you want. I don't own it but have seen a few videos on it.
  4. I don't know, I've really been blown away by the EVA1 footage I've seen. And I really do think the GH5 and GH5S will give you greater flexibility than the a6500 and A7iii. I can see why the Sony is tempting, but overall the Panasonic package you talked about is stronger I think. There are simply things you can't do with the a6500 and A7iii that the GH5 combo can, whereas the only things they have over the GH5 combo is better auto focus and low light.
  5. The click bait is getting a bit out of control. It's making me less inclined to "surf" YouTube more and more, which has narrowed the amount of new content I discover in favor of just focusing on select channels. It's nice that I can at least do that, however it's become extremely limiting. As far as YouTubers, there are those I enjoy (mostly those focused on video and photography) and then the rest, which I pretty much ignore. Outside of my video / photography interest, I really don't watch videos centered around actual YouTubers/vloggers. I just don't find those people to be that interesting. If I'm not getting some kind of educational value from their video, I just don't find most people talking to the camera and showing their exaggerated life to be that interesting. I think one of the major negatives about YouTube is that it has enabled unfiltered megalomaniacs like Jake Paul. In "traditional" media those types were coached or filtered out so, for instance, they don't show a fucking dead person that committed suicide for lulz and views. While it's a more honest version of these people, I think most of us would appreciate not being reminded they exist more than we already are on a daily basis. It enables them and feeds their delusions, and I really want nothing to do with it. Creatively it has been both a blessing and a curse. I've learned so much from watching certain YouTube channels. At the same time it has retarded creativity, resulting in a legion of people that copy the same look and style as your Peter McKennas and Casey Neistats. That's incredibly disappointing. Don't even get me started on the politics and monetization bullshit, ha ha. I know it sounds like I'm being excessively negative; I do appreciate the value and possibilities of the platform. But those things have really have started to bother me more and more.
  6. I think the sensor is the issue. Much easier/efficient to stabilize a smaller sensor.
  7. I feel like people are way too caught up on full frame. Will Panasonic and Olympus come out with a full frame camera? If they feel the market demands one, then yeah, it's inevitable. But is it required? I don't think so. I'd honestly be happy with a Super 35mm sized sensor with a M43 mount, like I have in my JVC LS300, because with full frame will inevitably come larger / heavier lenses and I'd prefer not to deal with that. As a M43 user I've really never felt like I was missing out too much shooting with a smaller sensor. I'm much more interested in better auto focus; if Panasonic could get it on the level of Sony or Canon I'd be extremely content. If they can come out with a FF camera that's great, too, but for my uses, it's not a requirement.
  8. Cernovich is definitely alt right. He's made multiple inflammatory statements about race and identified as alt right, only doing an about face after Charlottesville but hasn't changed his views at all.
  9. It certainly can't hurt! Even learning just the basics is a good skill to have. It will help get the most out of the tools and resources that are available to you, especially if you use something like the TAKSTAR so it sounds nicer. It's something I've personally been working on, and have spent the most time learning.
  10. It's not enough anymore to say the C300 "creates great images" because, at this point, you can use a $500 G7 to create great images. Are there things about the C300's image that are better? Of course, but when it comes to the standard of image quality, virtually every camera maker has gotten to the level where you can get results only dreamed about 10 years ago AND on a budget! We truly are fortunate / spoiled, given we're even able to have this conversation!
  11. While this is true, you're fighting an uphill battle using it with most Canon cameras because of the lousy preamps. Using it for dual audio is an option, but for many, especially those doing personal / non-commercial work, that just adds an unnecessary extra step. The TAKSTAR might be a viable option for you @Snowbro, if you're on a budget. There are a lot of videos out there on YouTube showing how decent it is for such a cheap mic. You're not going to get out of this world build quality, but you can get usable sound from it and it has a gain switch so you can lower your preamps. I have one that I use as a 3rd mic/backup and I feel it's well worth the money, though I've become quite the Azden convert
  12. The VideoMic Pro + is great, especially with the auto off and on function, but it's so expensive and I don't notice much, if any, sound difference between the new Azden mics and the Rode mics, certainly not $100 worth of difference!
  13. I only watched on my phone without headphones, but it doesn't sound... Terrible... But it doesn't sound great either, ha ha. The micro is really great for Sony and Panasonic cameras, but not so much for Canon. You're going to want to get a mic that can add +20 dB so that you can turn your camera audio levels down as far as possible. I've been using my friend's Azden SMX-15 and I really, really like it.
  14. Honestly any camera that produces a good picture and is at least 1080p is relevant in 2018. We're so spoiled these days!
  15. Correct, it uses a smaller portion of the sensor. I haven't done the math but it gives ya that little extra reach without quality loss. I'd test it out, you can assign it to a button to turn it on and off when you need it. It's also useful when using vintage lenses that don't completely cover the sensor.
  16. B&H is running a sale on the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 Canon lens today for $599, the lowest I've seen it for new. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/967344-REG
  17. The really nice thing about the AF100 is that it outputs 10 bit 4:2:2 via HDMI. Hook it up to one of the HD Atomos recorders that you can get for little money used these days and you can get great quality footage that you can work with in post.
  18. Have you tried activating Extra Tele Conversion on the GH5? It adds reach without quality loss. You can create a custom button to turn it on and off, I believe, and it'll give you a bit of extra reach.
  19. Quite a few people edit 4K on laptops pretty easily. I have a year old gaming laptop that plays and edits 4K pretty well, even without using proxies. Obviously a desktop will handle it better but it's doable.
  20. Apparently even the slightest bit of dust could cause keys to stop working.
  21. I feel like it depends on what your editing preferences are. I'm not familiar with the Surface Books, outside of the commercials. I can't help but imagine though that you'd get better performance with FCP on the MacBook Pro than with Resolve on the Surface, simply because FCP is so fine tuned to work on Mac systems. With that said, I might hold off on getting a MacBook Pro until the next update, given the issues people have had with the keyboard and stuff. Is there a reason you're specifically looking at a Surface?
  22. Vimeo users have gradually declined in the last 3 years, even among professionals.
