lol the Canon excuses. The c200’s slow motion is pretty bad compared to what’s available from other DSLMs! If I pay 6-7k for the c200 pkg, the DPAF won’t be enabled with the 120fps. What’s so great about DPAF if you can’t use it at will? C100mkii... DPAF can’t be used throughout the whole sensor, unless you’re using an USM lens, and even then it’s the slowest of the bunch. C300 doesn’t have slow motion. The only camera with decent slow motion is the 1dxmkii, but you need to use MotionJpeg... Ugh.
They don’t have the best color science. The video is hella mushy.

Non of our complaints matter to Canon one tiny bit. They have a strong history in the camera industry. Their fans are incredibly loyal and pretty much dont care how Canon cripples their cameras. Canon fans dont care about BSI or stacked image sensors. They dont care how their sensors are read out or if they are video cropped or not. Canon fans are just as happy with MJPEG as they are with H.264. Why is all this true? Because a Canon rep told them not to worry about this stuff.
Canon will make money no matter what cameras they release...because they understand how Cannon fans think.
Canon can doesnt worry about keeping up with Sony, or Panasonic, or Ricoh, or Kodak or Poleroid technology.....because Canon fans dont buy Canon cameras for technology reasons. They buy Canon to be part of a historic "club"....to associate themselves with a good name.
And this is all Cannon needs from them.

I don't know what they're doing exactly, but they're done by now. Even if they would come out with some kind of competition to the new BMPCC 6K, the S1h or the incoming (I hope) a7sIII, they would just cripple it in some way that the others don't, for color science's sake. BMPCC fills so much tasks, from trad run&gun to streaming cameras, A7sii still reigns as the king of low light, and the S1h is basically everything a photographer/videographer has ever wished for. What's left for Canon in this segment? What could they get out of it?
I guess the only way they could profit from this segment now would be to release some kind of Amira shoulder-style docu/broadcast camera at a decent price. But they'll never do that.

Further Canon madness with regards EOS RP, M6 II and 90D:
    - Aperture Priority mode 4K shooting is disabled
    - Video mode is either Full Auto / Full Manual. It does not follow the mode dial selection
    - Cannot shoot 4K by hitting record button in a stills mode - and 1080p is recorded in P Auto no matter what stills mode you are in
    - No ALL-I codec option
    - No AF or IS with 120fps
    - 120fps is cropped, using 84% of sensor
    - Bitrate for 4K is just 120Mbit
There is a movie-cropping feature on the 90D, so it will be interesting to see if 4K in the cropped mode is a 1:1 crop with no binning. Either way it's lose-lose. Crop in one, poor resolution and moire in the other.
It isn't clear whether the EOS M6 II has the cropped-sensor mode in 4K or whether this is a 90D feature only.

I regret selling my A6500 as it was just such a useful "take anywhere" camera with awesome AF. Slog2 was instrumental in getting my holiday shots exposed well with a smooth picture. This line definitely has a marketplace, BUT....
I wouldn't say the A6600 is even worth looking at seen as the A6500 can be had for £600-£700 new. 4k60p, better ergonomics, better rolling shutter would have been worth it! This incremental update thing by Sony is getting ridiculous. They used to be very aggressive. Saving the best for the A7S III perhaps?
As for Canon, you can't possibly defend them now. They are dead to me for video.

Conspiracies, cost cutting, delusions... it's all the same to me. There's only so much value to be had in speculation about the whys and hows. The bottom line is: I'm not buying any camera that doesn't shoot 24p.

    Well said.
The cheapest camera with 24p is probably something like $80
And people still believe the Canon rep PR spin that 24p had to go to bring the price of their $1400 camera down a bit and that Canon did everybody a favour and it's good business! LOL!
People are so gullible it saddens me to the core.
Even the EOS 1300D has 24p!
Obviously not in 4K but this is one of their cheapest and worst DSLRs.
There is a reason Canon do not want filmmakers and enthusiasts using 4K 24p for under $2000 and it has nothing to do with profit margins, licensing costs, technological capabilities and everything to do with forcing these advanced users to pay more for a different model, end of story.

I’ve never had an account in here. Just lurked.
But I finally had to sign up. Some of us grow so tired of reading your repetitive assumptions, theories, and misguided opinions.
No one in their right mind thinks canon removed 24p to save a bit of money.

Furthermore the license fees fees have an annual cap. Once a company hits that cap it can’t cost them more. I imagine big companies that manufacture video equipment using these codecs hit that cap regularly

please stop repeating the same terrible excuse every page

OK so here's the thing about add-on EVFs. They are all shit. They all need stupid wobbly cables, they all upset the centre of gravity and balance of a mirrorless camera, they all draw attention to you so people know you're shooting video in public and the Permit Krackens swoop, people get upset, etc. They all cost a lot of money and they all take big chunky 1990's style camcorder batteries or hook into an even bigger v-lock brick on your spidery stupid rig, and therefore they are horrible to use, horrible to pack away, horrible to assemble and slow to boot up. Then the battery dies, poof.
And all that just to see the fucking picture under sun.
I despise external recorders and external EVFs. None of the manufacturers have innovated. None of them have stepped out of their cinema bubble and come up with anything as elegant as a mirrorless camera's built in EVF.
FF vs S35 is not a comparison dependant on the codec. The aesthetic is different, the lenses are different, the lens circle is different. Discuss that, then we can discuss the codec separately because it is literally a separate topic!
EF lenses still rule, of course they do, so put one on L-mount with the Sigma adapter. Done.
Price chasm is not that big. In the UK for instance Pocket 6K is £2300 and S1H £3599.
But the Pocket 6K has no EVF so you need to add one for £1000
The Pocket 6K has no stabilisation so you need to add a cage and shoulder rig for £500.
Alas the Pocket 6K has a piddly little battery which the meter decides it has had enough off after 10 minutes with random shut downs, so add the v-lock for £300 minimum.
    Final price? £4100.
Don't get me wrong I love what Blackmagic did with the image and codec. Just wish it was in a different camera not the shit one they put it in.

Having some fun with 2 old cameras... When i'm in the offseason (I shoot sports) I like to shoot random things around the house and practice shooting, lighting, and sometimes grading to keep my skills in check.
I spent half an hour shooting this and around an hour and a half editing to make this little 50 second edit. Anyone else do this regularly as well? If so post a video.
    Video Notes:
Shot in 4K 24fps: Cine 2 - Cinema Color Space
Exposed bright white to 80 IRE. Camera and lens were lit with 2 led panels at separate color temperatures. (Cold key and warm fill)
Used a vintage Olympus 50mm F1.8 with a SmallHD 701 for framing, focus, and Waveform monitor for exposure.
Corrected and Graded in Davinci Resolve 16.1 Studio (Beta) with a double node Lut workflow.
Last but not least, the shots of the A6300 were done with the FS5 in the same color profile. All 8bit 4.2.0 ofc

Not quite yet though. Sheeple still buy them. Even after asking me for my expert opinion, because ultimately they've always only known this iconic 'Canon' so for them it feels like a 'safe bet' and your typical electronics market dweep will also recommend it since he doesn't know any better either. It's gonna take a while before that's eradicated. They'll even pick a traditional DSLR because that's always been regarded 'the professional' thing, even when I tell 'em about the benefits of a mirrorless camera. It's a deeply rooted evil they're still picking the fruits from. But yeah, at some point the well has to dry out, but... it will rather be later than sooner I'm afraid.

    In what?
Look at the numbers of FS5/7 out there making stuff. Not to mention live broadcast.  Arguably they are de facto number 1 in some areas?
There is no single “number 1”. Just an awful lot of pedestals serving different markets.

Good stuff!  We film when the thing is really happening and we don't get a second chance, so practicing when it doesn't matter makes sense.
I don't, but I do camera tests and experiments which is something.  I should do more.
I've been thinking about starting a side-project (explained in the "The D-Mount project" thread) and part of that is to learn and fine-tune (ha ha) my skills.
