The Af is substandard compared to other cameras, no doubt about that. And full frame is indeed where the other competitors are headed.
But for hybrid shooting, the S-Series of cameras are really good.
I am really impressed by VLOG at ISO 4000.
The S1H has 6K internal, and that is coming to the S1 in the next firmware update (this spring?!?!?!)
The Panasonic lenses (although there aren't that many of them) are great for shooting video (as long as you get things in focus). Minimal focus breathing, near parfocal performance on the zooms, linear focus, adjustable amount of focus throw.
Maybe no one cares about that but people like me. Which is a way of saying, yes, the full frame cameras need to be significantly better to grab a larger part of the market.
The thing is, for m43 (and for Panasonic in particular), they really are only missing:
    1) Great AF
    2) Better Low-light / high iso
    3) Better dynamic range / lattitude
    4) More AI features???
    5) 6K internal?
    6) ProRes Raw over HDMI
So they are going to be dependent on what Sony or any other chip fabricator comes up with. (An m43 sensor with dual gain optimization like the Canon C70 has would be great and would take care of #2 and #3 above).

Yes the Sony A7sIII does allow to punch in while recording.

You need IBIS if you want smooth footage from a 180 shutter.
IBIS / OIS stabilises the camera DURING the exposure, EIS stabilises AFTER the exposures have been made.
Imagine doing a jittery pan at night.
With no stabilisation at all you will have a sequence of frames that aren't all aligned horizontally, and in each frame you will have motion blur that goes left to right with some little wiggles in it.
If you had IBIS / OIS on then you will have a sequence of frames that are all aligned horizontally, and in each frame you will have motion blur that goes left to right without any up and down wiggles in it.
If you used EIS only you will have a sequence of frames that are all aligned horizontally, but in each frame you will have motion blur that goes left to right with some little wiggles in it.
EIS is spectacular for action cameras because they use SS to expose and so in good lighting have basically no motion blur, but as soon as you have motion blur at all then IBIS or OIS becomes necessary for properly smoothed motion.

Or let depreciation work for you and get a FS5/GH5/X-H1 instead??

Seriously, with the way the world and the economy is, I'd minimize spending and look for best bang for buck. Let others take the depreciation hit! Not you.

Will any of your wedding clients really tell the difference between if you shot it with a X-H1 or X-H2??

More like the love child of a S1H and the FX6 I think.
I wish they'd release a pro APS-C camera, or at least an APS-C camera which didn't suffer from HORRIBLE amounts of rolling shutter.

I do not mind rolling shutter though, so long as it isn't horrific.
Could, I couldn't cope if it was even more expensive than the a7Smk3! (plus who'd then buy it over an FX6 for only marginally more?!)

    Guesses:
    1) crippled stills mode
    2) no IBIS

With the A7sIII, this really needs to have some great video features to differentiate itself (and not just S-Cinetone). And that means: Internal eND. If it doesn't have that, how many other things could it have to really set it apart? Other than the cool color, more robust build, better tilting screen, and lots of mounting points.

Yeah wondering that as well, this would eat the A7S iii for lunch I guess, the price is even similar... So there must be a catch, as Sony will not cannabalise the A7S III.

No mechanical IBIS would maybe make possible the integration of a built-in VND. That would be awesome.

At present I'm keeping my GH5 and GH5S for streaming and some 2 camera jobs along with the 12-35 2.8 and 35-100 2.8.
I have already sold my Sigma 18-35. The Speedbooster and my Voigtlanders are on sale. I'm going to put the 10-25mm up for sale to. Really great kit but as I had to buy a Sony A7iii for client work I'm thinking about going all in on Sony.
I love those Panasonics but I would need a really good reason to trust that m43 has a future. I'd suggest that someone tell Panasonic that they need a very clear GH6 announcement very soon before many others jump ship.

eND, GH5S or better lowlight, best IBIS, 10 bit 4k 50p and 6k 25p and Sony class AF. There's your winner

*It goes without saying that there'd be no extra crop and all the other stuff we love.

Lots of cool ideas there, but for video shooters, only having 512gb internal storage before off-loading would be a nightmare. Got to keep the card slots.
In my opinion, they have to do a couple of BIG things. Those would be:
    - Internal eND - Be the first
    - Internal BM Raw or ProRes Raw - even if this was available out the USB-C to an external SSD (like the Sigma FP), that would be HUGE. Being able to bypass the Ninja V would be so great.

    Then also some :
    - PDAF - They have to do it at this point. Or figure out a way to make DfD/Contrast aas good as the competition.
    - 5.9k or 6k like the S1, S5, S1H would be fine, but they'll probably go for 8k.
    - Timecode - Get that Netflix appoval
    - 180-240fps in 4k - Just to beat the full-frame models
Some other cool ideas would be to have a battery grip also have two mini XLRs, or have one mini XLR on the body. We'll seee.

Their silence is another thing that doesn't make me feel particularly confident. I know it seems like I'm being negative, I'm honestly looking for a reason to stick with M43, but things have changed rapidly in the last 2 years and everyone has caught up. Back then they were the only one that had all the features they had, so it was easy to make the argument (which I made) that AF wasn't a big deal when they gave you everything else they did. And still, I find the AF on my GH5 to be OK, but I'm also aware that my needs aren't the same as other's needs and for a lot of people AF is one of the main selling points.
I'm just asking Panasonic to rise to the occasion or at least let us know what's going on so we can make whatever decisions we might need to take. Stop leaving us in the dark, please.

I don't think so, Canon is already working on the R1; this is in the 1DXIII price territory so its not a direct competitor to the R5, the A7SIII is more of a competitor to the R5. The R1 will be Canon's answer to this camera both in price and functionality.
I thought the exact same thing...except the MFT part. Panasonic is dependent on Sony for their sensors, so if they are able to use this sensor in a next gen S1H (and change their AF system).......oh never mind who am I kidding, Panasonic will never change their AF system; but anyway if they were to make a S1H II with this sensor that would be interesting...but probably at least $5500

As a run and gun shooter that's 50/50 stills/video I'd get the a1 over the others without hesitation. Maybe the c70 and a R5 for photos, definitely not the Komodo. But I'm sticking with the a7sIII for video work and a7III for photos and a video backup, its a beast and I prefer the sIII flippy screen over the a1's. If I want more mp with photos I can just get a used a7rIV at about $2k and still have 2 bodies to cover everything. My a7sIII is my second photo body for now.
    Cheers

I'm a hybrid shooter but I'm not going anywhere near it either and not just because it is Sony. You could literally get a great stills camera AND a great video focused camera for the price of this one. I think this camera is literally targeted at the hybrid sports shooter if such a thing exists.  I'm with you, I think the quest for the perfect hybrid camera might be overrated and dedicated video cameras are more realistic.
Personally I'm starting to give up on the idea of a hybrid camera. I keep thinking that a hybrid camera would make my life easier on a hybrid shoot (less gear to carry) but then when I'm on a shoot there's so many differences between the photography portion of the shoot and the video portion (lighting / audio / camera settings / movement / etc) that I feel like I will always need two camera bodies. Even when it comes to the body, for photography I need a remote flash trigger attached and a battery grip with a vertical shutter release button so that I can shoot portraits, for video I need an audio module attached and can't use a battery grip because of the camera cage.

Still don't understand why they don't just make an optional combined battery grip and fan system for video use.
For a start, moving the batteries out of the main body and into the grip would alleviate some of the internal heat.
An exhaust system could then be incorporated into the connecting stork of the battery grip that opens up an aperture in the battery chamber of the camera with fans in the grip taking care of cooling.
That would maintain the weather sealing and satisfy stills shooters who don't want to pay for any extra video oriented features that they will rarely use, particularly ones that add bulk and noise.
And of course, anyone who is using this camera for video is going to need all the battery power they can so its a win win for them.
Of course, when I say I don't understand why Sony don't do this, I mean from the customer's perspective but from their own point of view I think its pretty obvious why they don't.

Just bought an A7iii. Not because I really want it or rate it. I had a last opportunity to discount VAT (IVA here), the camera with a 50 1.8 cost 2100€ but with a 400€ cashback from Sony. Then discounting the VAT it comes in around 1350€. Why the A7iii? Because I have a new client and they only use Sony so hopefully it means more work (I've been told that if I had had a Sony I would have had several shoots in October and November). I just informed them of the purchase and they've just confirmed the first shoot of the year, so seems a good choice. Seriously thought about the A7Siii but I don't think this year is the time to splash out.
To finance this I have sold my GX85, Sigma 18-35 1.8 and a Sigma 50-150 2.8. I'm also selling a Canon 18-135, 2 Voigtlanders and 2 Edlekrone sliders. This will give me enough to purchase a Tamron 28-75 2.8 or a Sigma 24-70 2.8 for the Sony. I might well sell my 10-25 1.7 Lumix as well if I like the Sony enough.
I will keep my GH5 and GH5S with the 12-35 2.8 and 35-100 2.8, XLR adapter etc for streaming and long form recordings. Lenses are easy enough to rent cheaply in Madrid if I need one.
So for me it's about rationalising my gear choices. If the Sony works out well for me I'd consider a A7iv depending on needs, specs and price.
P.S. What I really wanted to buy was the Panasonic S5 but I couldn't justify it rationally!

Sometimes you've got to jump on a good deal and it seems like you made a smart move. I'm hoping my purchase of the UMP was made under the same sort of rationalization. Admittedly, as it's out for delivery today I've felt both relief and remorse haha. If I choose to keep it, I'll have to make similar steps to finance it, probably meaning selling my Nocticron and BMPCC4K to at least take a chunk out of the cost. Best of luck to you in the coming year!
