    And hear me out

Bmmcc - if you can live with near apsc crop instead of full frame, bmmcc speedboosted would probably yield the most beautiful results. But that's subjective, as I value color information a bit more than compressed 60p.

+1 to that, but I am more of a fan of the BMPCC or the BMCC, thought i realize 60p is not a option on either one of them. BIG fan of Black Magic cameras. They have really helped the little guy get into some great video cameras for very little money. I hope they come out with version 2 on all of them.

The only thing that surprise me is the near certainty that some seem to have about the GH5's AF given that, a) it has not yet been released b) testers are using with very early beta firmware and c) that Panasonic has stated will have the best AF of any of the GH series, and be excellent by most standards... once the final firmware is baked in.

Call me crazy, but it seems more prudent to wait for the actual finished product, which even after release will still probably get firmware upgrades to improve performance (aside from those we already know are in the works). For those that don't want or need the GH5 and their current equipment is fulfilling their needs, fine, no need to make excuses, defend your current equipment or assume that a camera that hasn't even been released is seriously flawed in some way.

Personally I'm excited to see what Panasonic brings to the table. Technology is always advancing and personally, I think that's great. :)

Well if it doesn't focus well I am not buying it. The GH6 will be 3 years down the road in reality. That is a long time to hope for Canon like focusing let alone better. I think focus is the big thing now and if you lag in it I am not buying. I am too old to manual focus, and as a one man band it is hard to do even when you are young.

They are still sticking to the same focus that the GH4 has. If firmware could fix it they would have done it last year. Sure it looks like they have faster readout and more HP in the computing part of it. That should help, but it is not like having Phase Detection on the sensor. That seems to be the answer for Mirrorless cameras. Look at the difference between the Sony A7sii and the A7rii, day and night focus wise.

And I know it is way to early to not consider it, so we will see soon enough. March is around the corner.

  3. Well I know it seems really expensive but the only thing close is the Sony A7sii , A7rii and they are another 1,000 bucks. I am sure the A7iii will be killer, they really have to be to be honest. Sony is not going to let Panasonic steal all the limelight.

But you have to set a limit on what you can afford. I am sure you can learn all you need to start with with the GH5, and it will have room to grow as you grow. Go for it, it has to be a lot better than the GH4, and that camera was killer, and still is. But easy to spend your money! :grimace:

Hey Geoff, cheers for the suggestion, already considered, but a used D750 nearly costs as much as a new A7s here in Australia. Hoping to find something cheaper, closer to the $1000 price point if a camera even exists at this price...

Agreed about the 1080p output. There's such good value even in the cheapest cam's like the Panasonic G7/G85 packed full of killer features with a beautiful 4K image, and once downscaled to 1080 look amazing... the menus, image stabilisation, focus peaking, ease of use, everything is unreal in these cams. Yet camera companies still can't produce an entry level camera with decent 1080 50/60p slow-mo at a reasonable price point despite most people delivering their content in 1080.

I do wonder how long will it take for full frame cameras to become affordable? I can't do camcorders mate, so might have to hang out for the next release of the A7s iii series and wait for the A7s to drop in price. Thanks

I have been hoping the original A7s drops also, but I gave up holding my breath! It still is, in certain circumstances, ergo low light,  the way to go for the money. Not the best overall for the money I guess, but I would still kill for one LoL. And 1080p looks great on it also.

Put his short video together. All hand held using third party lenses, metabones speed booster, and FD speed booster, shot in low light situations near sunset, holding ISO to 200 in every clip.

Great video, damnit I wish the GH5 was a Camcorder Factor, I would pay 3k for that! Get off the dumbass mirrorless form factor for your video cameras Panasonic that is affordable! Not everyone can afford a Varicam!

  6. For some reason most of the 1080p output on DSLR's, Mirrorless FF cameras, even APSC that I have seen that have 4k on them seem to suck, no clue why, but 4k looks great down sampled to 1080p. So slow motion on them is not much to write home to mother about is what I am saying. Not many cameras in that sector have 4k slo mo over 30p.

Seems dedicated Camcorders are the only thing that has great 1080p with slo mo I like.

So used cameras like a Sony F3 or FS100,  older Panasonic camcorders, are my picks.

  7. MFT cameras have never been too good at focusing anything but native lenses for them. Only the Sony A7r mkII seems to work great with Canon lenses.

It will be life in the slow lane focus wise. But a lot of people use them. They are hard to give up. :grimace: But they  have no external focus or aperture ring as you know, so I am not too fond myself in using them.

But MFT cameras are really a great way to go. Small, lots of used lenses, great video on the Panasonic cameras. And some really cheap used ones like the G7. Looks like the GH5 is going to be a very hard camera to beat for the money, even though it is going to go for 2k.

  8. Well I think the next Sony A7 cameras will probably be the way to go, granted they will be nearly a $1,000.00 more than a GH5. Sony is not going to  let Panasonic overcome them. Sony seems to be going for the throat lately so I would expect the next A7s will be 10 bit, god knows what else. They are not going to stand still.

for xmas my wife bought me the DJI Osmo Mobile and a Moondog Labs anamorphic lens. I shot a ton of footage with my iphone 7 at the womens march in los angeles. I don't think i'd shoot anything other than travel/personal videos with this combo, but it *is* a lot of fun. here's a sample ungraded clip. if you watch closely, you'll spot zach woods from the show, silicon valley.

Yeah I have a Moondog Labs Anamorphic lens also. Pretty nice piece of glass for the money.

Kisaha  I have the 128gb version so it is pretty good for video memory space. I am not a big Apple fan but there is so many more apps and hardware items available for them it is a no brainier to use them. I got started in 4k on my Samsung Note 4, so not a Apple snob.

And Nobody uses a P&S in this day and age get real. :astonished:

  10. Nobody is saying it is a Red camera, but it is a 4k camera that just happens to fit in your pocket and you have with you 24/7. And yes people have made a few big time full feature movies with them. Do the people in the audience know that, doubt they care if it is a good story with good audio.

I would use one over a old 8mm to make a movie. I have no clue why people discourage new, young or old people from learning the craft of movie making. A cell phone is a great way to see if you are really interested, or talented at it enough to move up. It is basically free to experiment with. Why the hate I have no  clue.

I would imagine the pace at what cell phones have advanced on video has had a good influence on the big boys. Pretty embarrassing to have a cheap ass cell phone do 4k and try to sell a camera for 6000 bucks that doesn't. :grimace:

Only a couple of hipsters would be happy with an iPhone wedding video, and only a "naive" and only-care-about-the-hype hipster would use such equipment for a professional video. I am not even use the unstable Sony's for this reason, and nothing AUTO, I can't imagine using a phone for a paying job.

There are better camera phones, why not a Samsung or a Google camera then??

I agree that one can achieve great things with whatever medium chooses (from super 8 to camera phones), but a few days ago, my NX3000+16-50 pz kit lens out performed every camera phone (mostly iPhones) that my friends and familu used to record a social event we had. And that combo costed me 1/4 of an iPhone. Plus, with the exceptional Samsung app I moved all the pictures to my Xiaomi and shared instantly. Oh, and I had a real lens, doing real lenses stuff.

P.s my mobile phone+camera combo costed me half the money of the latest iPhones my friends are having, and they do more things, with better processing power, and the NX3000 WITH THE KIT lens, was in my jackets left pocket,it is even smaller with the exceptional 30mm/2f pancake.

I shoot a lot on my iPhone 6s Plus. It is a lot better than you think with the proper apps. It is a low light beast no, is a MFT camera a low light best no. BM cameras are not low light beasts either.

Lots of high end stuff does not do 4k, but iPhones do. So that is a edge also. And I have it with me all the time, so that is a plus also. And they have OIS on them also. And my Came TV 32 bit Gimbal cost me 299 bucks, a big plus money wise.

Some of you guys sound like the old turds on DPR. Anything phone related Has to be crap. Far from it.

Well a 57 Chevy was probably only 1200 bucks new either but now...

On a serious note if you have a 40 million budget on a film I don't think owning a trio of those is a bad investment, not counting they are a tax write off in the end. And you can rent them out to poor people like us.

I feel that these fell out of the buzz a bit, even now when they are out in the stores.
And specially now when there is so much buzz around the Fuji MF camera.

I mean who doesn't want Medium Format on the cheap?

    The adapter + a $100 Pentax 645 Lens + a $500 A7 gives you a pretty affordable Medium Format kit.

I had the A7 and liked it a lot. Much more than I liked the A7ii and A7sii because of the quality/$.

Obviously Im not interested in gaining any resolution like some, Im after the MF aesthetics.
Meaning, being able to use a portrait lens with its DOF and compression but from a nicer distance.

So pretty much the same but opposite reason why MFT and APS-C is so nice for street photography and manual focus.

Philip Blooms Cat tests with the adapter + A7rii.

Personally its still the cost holding me back. I dont care about using it for video and for stills Film is still way cheaper.
My old Yashica D for $100 is sharp as a knife.
My old $50 Zeiss Nettax is pocketable.
My mothers old Certo can be had for $10, is pocketable (jacket) and is simpler to use than a smartphone.

The problem is that they aren't exactly street photo friendly.
Usable bur not ideal. Not like a range finder.

So after two days of constant hovering over the order button on the adapter and late nights looking at samples form the Fuji GX I decided to go another route.

6x9 Medium Format Fuji Rangefinder :)

I always wanted one of those years ago, but they were very expensive then. Everyone else wanted one also LoL. Seems like younger people are getting back into film cameras as of late. :glasses:
