crevice got a reaction from Amazeballs in Canon open to adding BRAW to Canon R, R5, and R6
A new tweet by canon rumors, who I find the most reliable of all rumor sites, says that Canon is open to adding BRAW to their R series cameras.
This would be the biggest company to add BRAW to their cameras other than blackmagic themselves. It doesn’t matter if you care about these Canon cameras or not, every single person should be rooting for this to happen, because if Canon adds it, it forces the hand for Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, etc to add it as well. And when that happens, we all win. BRAW is our only choice for some sort of compressed RAW, because of REDs patent ruining the party. BRAW in more cameras means cheaper media, easier editing, color grading, etc. So, make some noise so canon knows we want this or whomever your favorite brand is. Sites like this one have pushed brands to be better and right now, they are listening and we need to continue to be loud. BRAW should be in every single camera that takes video seriously.

That C5D article is one of the worst professional “reviews” I have ever read. It reads like a blog by a college student. He goes into zero detail about what actual mode he was using (hq?, etc), how long he was shooting or if he even reached out to canon to see if it was normal. Not to mention the writing skills are just plain bad.

If they are bringing their new color science and it shoots full frame with actual high dynamic range, not bullshit marketing dynamic range, and the footage actually looks like fx9 - this exceeds expectations. It’s crazy to me that all we are hanging on is specs. The footage is what should exceed expectations - isn’t that all that matters? If the a7s3 and R5 shoot amazing looking video that get close to their big cinema brothers - we all win. In fact, with these 2 cameras we are all winning no matter what. It’s amazing the kind of tech we are getting in hybrid bodies.

I keep getting more and impressed by the actual image this camera is producing. I was kind of preparing to be "meh'd" by the footage, but the video quality looks fantastic in the few videos I have seen. The color science seems great and it seems to have a slight sharpness reduction which to me is fantastic - I hate overly sharp digital footage - i'm guessing this is due to the aa filter, similar to the S1H. It just slightly takes the edge off. I have said it before and I will say it again, it looks very similar to my C200 footage.

crevice got a reaction from Leica50mm in Blackmagic Design > RED
Going to agree with this as well. I have never really seen a Blackmagic camera on a legit shoot. It's usually always Arri, RED, or Canon. At my old job Canon c300 was the go to for eng/documentary footage. In all other shoots I have been on its RED or Arri (mostly Arri at this point). Can the ursa line shoot fantastic video? Yes. Is it better than Arri or RED? Definitely not better than Arri, but I do think that the ursa mini with Fairchild sensor looks better in many cases than some RED cams. But their is a brand problem for sure.
I have to go back to my previous point that their plastic outdated body design doesn't help them much in any area. It feels and looks cheap. You cant take it serious. Ursa might not feel as cheap as the pockets,  but it sure does look dated. Also, just because the pocket line isn't used much in high end work, doesn't mean that it doesn't affect the entire brand. They look like fisher price toys and when you bring up Blackmagic in high end shoots, they are usually kinda laughed at for being cameras for amateurs. I am NOT saying that is accurate nor do I agree with the attitude, but that is the attitude they have. Lastly, if we look at communities around a brand - Blackmagic community is dead last. They are as an overall community (not targeting everyone),  the most immature/amateur group of the big brands. Their Facebook groups and forums are littered with attack memes toward other brands, horrible amateur videos of their girlfriends in slow motion with crappy LUTs, and 98 percent of the posts are about some creative way to try and rig the atrociuous bodies of the pocket line. Most of them have never been on an actual shoot. I mean, just look at their groups over the last 24 hours, people are freaking out about the URSA being expensive at $10k, which just shows they have no idea what the real value of a cinema camera is. This all adds up to a brand image and amazing camera or not, Blackmagic have an image of a cheap brand that shots good video for amateur filmmakers on a budget and Arri and RED are for high end work. Its going to take a lot of work for Blackmagic to turn that around.

Yeah, I do. Is that ok? 😉

And not every camera ‘looks good on an overcast day...’ - you know there’s more to a picture than DR. There’s one thing being sassy, which I dig, but there’s no need to be silly.

Me enjoying this image doesn’t make your GH5S any worse. Does it make you feel better to know I’m not buying the R5? Doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate this footage.

Looks stunning to me as well.  Interesting how it seems people on the internet these days get more frustrated when people saying something positive, rather than getting frustrated at people for saying something negative. Here, let me chime in - I don't give a shit what the weather is like. I don't give a shit what every other camera does. This particular footage looks "stunning" to me as well. The colors look fantastic, with great skin tones. It's not overly sharp like certain other cameras with a nice smooth/cinematic feel to the footage and it has great motion cadence. To my eyes, who has shot and watched thousands of clips from various manufacturer - it seems to  hit above its weight class on just what I'm seeing in this video and the clips that I have downloaded. Super easy to grade and it looks very similar to my C200 files. I can appreciate the S1H AND Canon R5 or any other camera.

    My thoughts:
I don’t really get how people are upset that 8k raw overheats...why are you looking at a small mirrorless camera if you need long captures of 8k raw to begin with? Buy a real cinema camera. I think everyone is forgetting what this camera is and what was asked of Canon. Everybody is getting mad at canon for giving us what the majority of people asked.

People wanted a canon mirrorless camera that was full frame with amazing IBIS, dual pixel autofocus, high megapixel count for photos , and could shoot 4K 4:2:2 10 bit uncropped, with a swivel screen. So, they did that. They did exactly that and more. So then they thought, well we could give them a full raw 8k readout of the sensor and have them record as long as they can before it overheats, better than holding it back. Also, we can throw them 4K 120 as well and also have them go as long as they can before we max out. I mean, might as well give them everything the camera can do, instead of just not unlocking it and having the magic lantern folks do it for us, right?

So they threw in some crazy bonuses nobody was asking for and here we are, people bitching. The camera everyone wanted is here. The full frame autofocus beast with great IBIS, 10 bit, no crop, and great at photos true hybrid by canon is here and we are upset. Are we complaining that they have the overheating numbers written down? Because there is no way It’s a shock that 4K 60p 4:2:2 10 bit with dual pixel autofocus will overheat near the 40 minute mark...or are we surprised that 8k raw in a mirrorless full frame with IBIS engaged, dual pixel autofocus,  and no crop in a small mirrorless overheats? I mean, what are we mad about here?
This is the camera that everyone wanted. There are several frame rates and resolutions that Canon threw in that will be very useful within the limits of this specific camera and yes they have limits, but at least they are unlocked and not behind a magic lantern hack like the old 5D. As someone that shoots an equal mix of photography and video, this is a dream camera. I get a high megapixel camera and high quality video, with all of canons special sauce including their great autofocus and colors. I see no mention of limits for standard 4K 24p and 35 minutes of continuous 4K 60 is more than what I need. If it’s not for you, than that’s fine - keep waiting.

There is so much negativity in the world right now, that I’m honestly not surprised that Canon finally doing something good gets shit on. I expect nothing less at this point.

There is so much negativity in the world right now, that I’m honestly not surprised that Canon finally doing something good gets shit on. I expect nothing less at this point.

Amen brother. For so many...too many, the glass always seems half empty and the focus is on what they have not been given.
There is always going to be some kind of compromise whatever choices you make.

I wonder if Sony will put S-Cinetone in the A7sIII/H or if they’ll just release a new version of the already weird colors, keeping the tradition of non consistency alive. This matters much more than 8K raw imho.
