No lens will look as good as with MLRaw  . My Canon FDs look good on GH5, but they look amazing with MLRaw.
Maybe these older lenses just look nicer when you have a fuller colour spectrum, having 8-bit you loose a lot of that at which point you probably only focus on their short comings as vintage lenses (or at least rank them more in the sharpness/distortion category).

Yup, on occasion I think about buying another camera until I look at my footage.
As far as the eos-m and @Brian Williams video... I totally agree. It looks great. In some ways, the camera seems like a fun experiment in impromptu filmmaking.

That image is f#cking lovely! Man every time I see MLRaw I'm impressed, I need to shoot more with it again.

I'm not posting this bc I'm proud of it, but this is something I shot last night with 1x3 1504x1920... I got the viltrox focal reducer and the Tamron 45mm VC 1.8, in hopes of lessening the rolling shutter... Don't think it helped, maybe a little less of the vibrations, RS is definitely still there; yes, I know the walking shots were doomed from the get-go, I won't blame that on the camera. (Sometimes there are also still micro vibrations- I assume the VC is working bc it has a switch on the lens, can't image the adaptor somehow is disabling it?)
This whole thing has been pretty incredible to play with, and what Magic Lantern has been able to do is pretty incredible as well, but I think I may let go of this... aside from the RS, I just can't get past the live view... So many of these shots are out of focus because you can't really see much with live view... If you set to Framing as I do, the fps in the view gets really slow when recording and it's really really hard to follow the focus that way. If you set to real-time, the stretched image you see isn't even the center of the image so it's really kind of useless. I guess I might be ok with the 1080 settings (RS is a lot more manageable) but hate that its just short of HD, don't like having to scale up... if HD is all I'm after, I'm almost tempted to go and buy a used BM Pocket for $400, had that camera for years and loved it.
This is the second time I've gone out and bought an EOS-M bc of ML (last time was last Aug, back when 1080mv was the latest development)... Maybe I'm too impatient but I doubt the liveview will ever get better. If it does, maybe I'll buy the camera a third time and come back to it.

BTW, no pink frames for me at all with this shoot, and sd_overclock was on.

tweak reacted to BTM_Pix in Nikon Z6 / Z7 to go RAW with Atomos Ninja V - could Panasonic be next?
Well it looks like Atomos and RED have settled the differences that I mentioned a few weeks ago with a royalty deal.
It still doesn't specifically mention what IP of RED's that Atomos had been violating but it does seem widely accepted to have been to do with compressed RAW.
Whether this means that prices of the Ninja V etc will increase or that Atomos absorbs the royalty figure from their profit remains to be seen.
No word yet on whether RED have insisted on any alignment re-branding so that it would now have to become the Atomos DELTA FORCE OBLITERATOR MOTHERFUCKA to denote it using some of RED's technology.

I just finished my first shoot where I used the z6 for all the video shooting.  Was a bit painful to shoot (z6+14-24f2.8+ronin-s), but a total joy to grade.  The house was pretty easy to shoot though, nowhere near the dynamic range of some properties I shoot, it'll be interesting to see how it fares with them.  The ronin-s is miles better than the crane 2 for me. virtually no jitter even with the humongous cam and lens combo.  Good job too because the rolling shutter makes warp stabiliser a bit hit and miss.  I know some people have complained about the slomo, but I think its better than the gh5's. I spent the first few weeks telling my partner I was going to sell it, but just like the d5500, I'm loving the image.  Foibles: flicker from lights. I assume this is to do with the slow readout too.  Never had this issue with GH5. Its fine if I leave the shutter on 1/100 or 1/50th, but problematic if I want to use an auto mode.  I noticed some flicker on manual with auto iso. Have no idea why that should happen.  I know people dont post there own work a lot on here, I think more people should.

It is EXTREMELY RARE to even have a global sensor cinema 4K camera, in fact what notable ones exist....  only the Sony F55 (VERY expensive!) and the flawed BMPC4K

So if someone brings out a low low priced Global Shutter 4K cinema camera then I'm perfectly ok if it is a compromise or there, such as a S16 sensor (merely the same as my BMPCC has).

Although honestly I wish the rabid global shutter internet deskjockey fanboys had never managed to convince Z Cam in the first instance that a global shutter camera is a worthwhile project, as I'd have rather Z Cam had directed their limited R&D elsewhere.

Arguably you can use the Z Cam straight out of the box (not counting media or lens, which most cameras don't come with), assuming you have a smartphone (as nearly everyone does).

And in that post he was saying in the hypothetical example that you gave, then that would be ''criminal'' to do.

Maybe because you actively try to not learn anything more about them? Other than coming into this thread to post negative things about them.

"Most would agree...."  that BMD is more likely to go bust than replace ARRI as the next cinema standard.  As you said, "that's just the nature of the business". ARRI is a bloody tough bastard to knock off the top (but it will I presume happen one day")

That review was terrible. So long just to tell us he doesn't really know how to use a camera. Not to mention he missed lots of things this camera has that others don't (why you would buy it in the first place).

p.s. White Balance is the first thing he should google how to use.

Here is something I shot yesterday using the 1x3 mode, video comes out as 1500something by 1920 (4500something by 1920 after upscale). Tried my best to not move too much bc of the rolling shutter.

Yeah I had the A6300 last 60 minutes after hacking it. Confident I used it for a play recording and it shut off 25 minutes in. That's when I sold it, never would happen with my Panasonic. Let's see an indoor test or warm climate. Vloggers don't need long record times tho.

it looks like you guys are wearing long sleeved shirts, not sure when you guys did this test but it dosen't look terribly hot where you are. if it didn't over heat for you thats great for nz and northern europe i guess. but i reckon the aussie outback sun  at the moment might prove more of a challenge. in saying that its safe to assume  pretty much all cameras and people would be subject to a bit of heat stress regardless at the moment .its just bloody hot out here

Its a great stills camera if you don't mind the color. I am talking video.

Apparently over the course of three cameras they haven't improved at all. Not sure if its the sensor or Sony just doesn't care but either way its shitty. You have a choice between soft moire filled 1080p or Jello 4k. The 4k is great quality super detailed image good dynamic range. However the jello is really terrible. Plus I like to use 60p a lot and the HD is just bad.

If the sensor cripples 4k at 39ms RS, why even bother. Then keeping it on over three cameras just makes it ever more irritating. The XT2 seemed to have a similar sensor, ignoring color the detail and low light performance was very similar, yet the rolling shutter and 1080p was quite good. Why couldn't Sony do it right?

Anyways I am not saying you can't make good content with it. I am just hating on the camera, because it pisses me off. The A7III, A7S, and A7RIII were fantastic though.

G85 Autofocus sucks (it sucks on GH5 as well, I have one).
EOSm50 DPAF is a game changer for vloggers, my partner couldn't give a toss about 4K (or IQ much in general), she just wants reliable AF and a file she can edit on a regular laptop computer (same as most other vloggers out there).
For the reccord I would never buy an EOSm50 as my sole camera, but I'm not a vlogger  .
Most regular people don't vlog in 4K (even Casey doesn't anymore). EOSm50 autofocus in 1080p is amazing.
Vloggers want reliable autofocus unfortunately. I'd agree a G85 is a much nicer camera otherwise, but it's falls short in the one key feature in which most vloggers care about most.
p.s. Also if you've ever used an m50 you'd see how intuitive and helpful it is to use for people who aren't super into cameras. The scene specific timelapse modes is also a great touch.

tweak reacted to DBounce in Canon EOS R - The Sum Is Larger Than Its Parts
Over the past few weeks I have spent a lot of time with the Canon EOS R. I have also spent a lot of time with Nikons new Z6. On paper the Nikon Z6 would appear to have the EOS R beat dead to rights. And in all fairness to the Nikon, the 4k output from the Z6 is more detailed, sharper and cleaner at higher ISO than what the Canon can manage. So case closed then... an easy win for the Nikon, Canon fanboys go home! Well, not so fast... the problem is that for all of these specs, when viewed side by side... the exact same scene shot on the Canon EOS R just seems more organic. More filmic... in all honesty, it feels more cinematic.
Most here know that I have long praised the Nikon for its strengths... and rightly so. It's one hell of a camera. But when looking at the same scene, shot on both the Nikon and Canon, I can tell you, there is something magical about the Canon footage. I caught myself constantly trying to make the Nikon footage more like the EOS R. I thought softening a sharp image would be a simple matter of adding in a diffusion filter. But in practice nothing I did could duplicate the effortless organic vibe of the Canon. It's not the sharpest, but it is clear and in focus; softer by default, and frankly in a world filled with over-sharpened footage I find it refreshing. The color out of the EOS R look great. You need do very little if anything to the files. But if you shoot in C-Log, there is ample data to play with. Better yet if you output to the Ninja V in 10 bit.
While it might not make sense... and you would be right to argue that the Nikon is superior... none of that changes the fact that the Canon produces a nicer image. Even when it gets noisy the noise looks more like film grain than noise.
Between the two, both are fairly easy to use, granted, there is a learning curve if switching from one brand to the other. But nothing that bad. I find the Canon's menus to be better, but that might be just because I am use to Canon. I will say that the Canon's controls are arranged to be easier to use from in front of the camera. The flippy screen is also a big plus. The crop did bother me at first, but I don't favor wide shots so it was not a deal breaker, and for those times that call for more FOV, I can easily adapt one of my wide angle lenses.
In the end you have a choice to make... Go with the spec sheet, and get a superior camera; or pick the one that delivers more cinematic footage. For me the choice was difficult until I stepped back and looked at the output from both cameras. Once I did that the choice was clear. Canon wins again. I'm not sure how they managed it. But perhaps that's part of the magic.

I find it funny how people on here think the average consumer could care less about RS but for some reason they care so much about 4k, which codec they can't even edit on their laptops. For the average person the m50 is a much better option: the price is more appealing, has a proper screen, more aesthetically pleasing, better brand name recognition, and ergonomically a treat with that nice touch screen interface.
Most people watch youtube (I'd hazard a guess at around 80%) on their phone, for which 480p is good enough. I used to own a a6300 and sold it. That thing was so sharp you could see every pore and blemish on your face. I put it on 1080p and - ah - so much better for my appearance haha.
I don't see vloggers spending the extra money over a m50 - it would be a stupid decision.
