Juank reacted to Yurolov in Sony Semicon develops 100MP FF sensor with 6K video
Forward progress in terms of aesthetics is relative. It is why people still use the nearly decade old alexa and pay a premium for early CCD s16 cameras. Sony may have the tech but the images are lackluster. Not sure why Canon would give up the very thing that makes their image unique and special.

I agree that it's not always helpful to get hung up on specs and that ease of use, reliability, feel, ergonomics are more important.
Here's my opinion: the EOS R is a dog in this regard. It's not easy to use, it's not reliable and it's not got good ergonomics at all.
The crop harms usability because all your videos end up looking different to stills, or you have to use a zoom to compensate for the different FOV, or step backwards yards and completely re-frame. So if you're doing a video/stills hybrid shoot, it's a poor choice. The rolling shutter is a problem for anything that isn't a static subject.
Lack of effective 5 axis IBIS hurts it for hand-held video work and the digital version warps and crops even further, on top of more distortion from rolling shutter it is not very natural or organic.
Reliability - that top LCD is a serious weak spot. Cracks very easily. The lenses have externally moving elements for focus on the most part - even the expensive 50mm F1.2L R. Dated and noisy, and weather sealing isn't up to professional standards.
Switching quickly between video and stills mode is a fiddly chore and Dual Pixel AF is no longer the best especially with the 35mm F1.8 R and 50mm F1.2L R and their grinding moving front elements. Needs lenses with internal focus to work at its best and quietest, which it rarely does.
Yes, the image in C-LOG is nice, colour science is good, as is white balance and the codec. Like you I prefer to have an image with no excess digital sharpening and don't mind soft, cinematic 4K that doesn't fatigue your eye when the picture moves. It doesn't lack for detail unless you're a pixel peeper using a chart and not watching the film or content. So the image isn't so much the problem - the rest is.
But the E-M1X is a far superior hybrid camera.

Buy a camera that is "good enough" and learn to colour grade.
Seriously.  I used to be like you, but then I worked out what I wanted in an image and bought the right camera and lenses, and now when I hear that there's a new 12K RAW 16-bit pocket camera with built-in gimbal and AI drone I don't even care.  It happens that the camera I bought was a GH5, but if you have different needs then it will be a different camera.
The other part is learning to colour grade.  I was "done" with other cameras when I pulled the GH5 files into Resolve and it looked and felt like when the pros grade cinema camera footage - they pull in a shot and it looks flat because it's log, and then they push and pull it around almost mercilessly and it just does it and looks great, and the GH5 files did that too.  With all my previous cameras the file was fragile and would break given half a chance.
I'm not getting spectacular images out of the GH5 yet, but that's because I just need to learn to grade better.  I know the GH5 is great and it's about my ability to grade, not its limitations.  Specifically I think that's because it's 10-bit and the colour science doesn't have problems, so I know I can work with it.  Your results and preferences might be different, but when you're wishing you had something else it's because you're not happy with what you have.  There are always better cameras and we all wish we had an Alexa but many of us are satisfied even if the Alexa has a better image.

Yet i dunno why we are suddenly referencing cinema cameras or the entire history of film when clearly the subject comparison are hybrid mirrorless cameras of a sub $2500 range.
Canons 1:1 sampling, Clogs super low sharpening, high bitrate ALL-I codecs etc.. all help towards that elusive filmic look IMO.
That's not to say Z6 can't get there, especially if that RAW output does indeed bypass all the image processing, internal sharpening etc..
But as it currently stands, the supersampled & over-sharpened IQ doesn't output the most filmic imagery IMO. it doesn't help either you need a recorder just to get past baked picture profiles.

Agree, exatly my thoughts. They give us that, while everybody express, one more time, its disappointment concerning canon newest release...
Announcing a lot of lenses and disappointed cameras may appears relevant for some... But for me, the firmware updates announced by Nikon, the existing Nikkor lenses lineup, the coming adapted possibilites (the sony to Z, canon ef to z, leica etc.) plus the new S lenses are more than what I need, thus highly relevant !

I think offering full frame (no crop) 12 bit raw video on a US$2000 hybrid body pretty much meets the definition of going into complete and total overdrive.

Yeah this is just silly. I can’t believe it doesn’t have 24p in 1080?!?! Huh?
I think what this proves is that Canon does not see low budget video users as a target audience at this price point.
With that being said, I’m sure it will be a nice camera but they just saved me $600 because if I want Canon 4K or 1080p DPAF, I may as well just get an M50... 1.6x crop 4K crop on the RP or 2.5x crop on the M50’s... whatever. At least I can shoot 1080p at 24p on the M50.

That looks destined for the Cinema line. They're not releasing a 10mp hybrid and they're certainly not releasing a 4k60p hybrid or something that does 12-bit internal given how conservative they are with 5d4 or EOS R video specs. Its a Cx00 sensor if anything.

Yeah 10-bit out option is greyed out in FHD.. which makes recording with my Ninja Star kinda useless..
Hopefully Canon unlocks this with a firmware update. it's a very silly limitation.

Or we don't want to be limited to minuscule and rather bland selection of Canon-compatible IS lenses.
There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of different aesthetics available from the different lens designs, materials, coatings, and manufacturers throughout the history of photography.  I personally think that the ability of mirrorless to adapt every SLR lens ever made is potentially the biggest advantage of taking out the mirror.  The fact that IBIS gives IS to every lens ever made is a real game changer for those who don't (or can't) always shoot on tripods or larger rigs.

FWIW, one of the favorite docs I shot was with a GM1 handheld.  There's a lot of things to worry about with making movies.  Sure, camera mass is one of them, but, to me, pretty inconsequential on the priority list.

Yes... sad but true. The GH4 and then later the 5 sort of gave hope that perhaps Panasonic wasn't going to play those games. But now it appears that the real money maker they are protecting might be the GH5/S... and saving the real goods for the upcoming GH6. I think it's possible the real progress will come from Fuji. Their upcoming XH2 and Medium format monster look to be very interesting. Imagine 4k downsampled from a medium format sensor ?Fuji claims the upcoming GFX100S will do just that. Plus, I am certain these two top tier models will be manufactured in Japan... so build will likely be much better. I like the Fuji lenses also.
Nikon also seems determined to be counted as a force in the mirrorless hybrid world also. I would bet good money their upcoming offerings will be serious contenders.

I’m certainly not pro 4K crop. Of course I would prefer no crop. But that said all things are not equal. For whatever reason the Canon produces a more filmic/organic image that it’s contemporaries regardless of crop.
Let me put it this way... if there was another mirrorless full frame Canon with 10 Bit output, DPAF in 4K, 30MP + sensor, flippy screen and no crop in 4K... I would be all over that. But that is not yet available.
With the introduction of the S1, the above scenario is a reality within the Panasonic lineup. So it would seem the argument for purchasing the GH5/S is diminished. Especially when the body is near to the same price. The problem is Panasonic seems to have kept some of the weaknesses of the GH5 and removed some of the strengths when creating the S-line. I cannot understand why they didn’t just pull out all the stops.

The Canon 6D Mark II caps out at 1080p / 60 on video. *Surely* Canon wouldn't release an enthusiast camera in 2019 that only recorded 1080p...would they?
Although, Canon recently released the M50 and it only does 4K @ 23.97, has terrible rolling shutter, a big crop, and AF doesn't work very well in 4K... I have a bunch of Canon glass and would love for them to introduce a good camera for video. With their recent track record, I can't say that I am optimistic
We already have the A7III, Z6, S1, and the others above the EOS R & RP in price and the Sony A6400 / 6500, & Fuji below them in price. It might make sense for Canon to introduce the R & RP cameras, with those features, at those prices in isolation, but there is some pretty stiff competition out there...
