Juank reacted to kye in Apple M1 - my take on it
After using my old one for 4 years I replaced my 13" MBP with a new one only a few months ago.
I did this deliberately, knowing that the new architecture was coming, because I didn't want to be a beta tester.
I haven't read in detail what was in the announcement, but assuming that it was anything close to what was predicted, it's an interesting thing.
The things I think are most interesting are that by transitioning all the Apple hardware to ARM:
they can optimise the hell out of everything as they'll have control over the whole software/hardware stack it essentially merges the hardware platforms of phones/tablets/computers, meaning that they would go to one App Store, app developers only have to write one version of the apps instead of two all iPhone/tablet apps could be run natively on the computers potentially all the computer apps would be able to be run on iPhone/tablets The reason I waited is that it also means that they'll have to re-write OSX from the ground up, potentially putting into place a huge backlog of fundamental architecture changes that have been accumulating since OSX went to a unix platform, which is going to be a huge and very messy process.  Also, that means that every OSX program will have to be re-written, or will have to run in an emulator.  That's not something I want to beta test on something as sensitive to performance as video editing.
The end-game of this technology choice is that your phone will become your computer.
I've said this before, but imagine coming home, taking your phone out of your pocket and dock it which provides power and also connects it to your monitors / peripherals / eGPU / storage arrays and it goes into 'desktop' mode and becomes a 'PC'.
This might sound like science fiction, but I've seen someone actually do this years ago running linux on an Android device - it had tablet mode and desktop mode, similar to how modern laptops with touchscreens now have a tablet mode and a pc mode.  Modern processors are good at being efficient while they sit almost idling in the background, but then turn into screaming power-thirsty race-horses when asked to do something huge (anyone that has had their phone crash will know it can drain the battery before you even notice that anything is wrong).  When you dock it then full-power becomes available and only cooling may be a limiting factor.
The other aspect that supports this is the external processing architecture that has been worked out.  OSX supports having many eGPUs and Resolve will happily use more than one, although currently you don't get much improvement by having more than a few of them.  It's not inconceivable that in future an eGPU will be available that will appear to the OS as a small cluster of eGPUs, and the computer simply becomes a controller.  When I studied computer science we programmed software for a couple of toroidal clusters, one of which had 2048 CPUs (IIRC).  The architecture is getting there and video processing and graphics is a perfect application for it as you can just divide up the screen, or separate tasks such as decompressing video / rendering the UI / scaling the video / doing VFX processing / colour grading / etc.

I think it's important to note that although ARM is making these chips for Apple, they are still Apple designed (1000+ engineers only for that). I doubt similar chips for Windows will be made. These devices are going to trash similar setups in the windows world in terms of performance per watt. It's about time they came back with something good, but I'll wait a while before buying anything myself. They'd better get their shit together when it comes to keyboards too- the main reason I haven't upgraded anything.
This is really good news that it's using integrated graphics. I lost count of how many laptops Apple has screwed up in their designs (incorrect transistors, etc.). I'd think they'll do better with integrated graphics.
Also, I'm tired of the iPad stuff- it's just not as capable without doing hurdles. We STILL cannot sync external audio and video automatically!

I said a few years ago my “perfect camera” for video would be an XC15 style camera with at least S35 and up to 4k120 10bit. Then they released it.
I also have the A7SIII and looking forward to comparing. I predict I’ll keep hold of both. The A7SIII is a triumph.

I do shoot a lot of stills, sometimes more than video. I do prefer more resolution since some of the stuff I shoot goes beyond social and the web, but 12mp isn't going to hold me back. I just like the cropping flexibility and I do occasionally sell prints of my work, so more is better most of the time. I've only shot about 100 frames with the s3 over the last couple months, its really just a video camera for me at this point as I'm still getting used to working with it. I mostly leave it set in video mode and have the a73 around my neck - sometimes I'm also flying a drone - multitasking at its best LOL! I always carry at least 2 bodies anyway to have a backup, right now its the a73 and sometimes a 5dIV a friend is letting me use, but I'm probably moving to the a7r3 because I really like the output of the 42mp sensor and with most landscapes I can easily get two completely different shots with a crop. Plus I shoot wildlife here in FL and the crop power + the 200-600mm lens is awesome. I've shot tons with the a7r2, shutter shock is not an issue. It was on the original a7r, but every camera since has used a different shutter. The clack from the first one though, it was obnoxious LOL! I've used it a lot for landscape work, the shutter shock wasn't an issue for me - it was mostly with longer FL's IIRC.
I decided there's simply no way for me to get everything I want in one body, Canon came oh-so-close with the R5 until the overheating issues, but even if that wasn't an issue I still prefer the internal recording options from the a7s3, better rolling shutter performance, and Sony's lens selection. Really the biggest thing the a7s3 lacks compared to others is the ability to shoot 4k in s35 mode, but that can't be changed. I'll still take that over the Panasonic crop and such. The flip side is just how incredibly nice the 1080p footage is, this camera shoots incredible HD video too.
The second ISO is 4 1/3 stops above base on all profiles.
    Cheers

So far I'm loving the a7s3. If you need more mp with stills there are numerous options including a7r2's that now sell in the $800 range used - which is insane for the IQ. But the difference with the shutter is jarring - the s3's shutter is so well damped compared to previous Sony models. I've used it with Sony glass, Tamron and Sigma E-mount lenses and Canon/Sigma lenses on the MC11. If the IBIS isn't enough, use the post stabilization, its brilliant. Full size HDMI is a joy, so is external prores which seems to have slightly better color compared to internal. The 120p is so good and the AF sticks to subjects incredibly well. I run it on the Weebill S, just tap where you want the AF point to stick and shoot - its almost always spot on. Slow the transition down and you have some very nice focus pulls. I've been shooting a lot outside here in Florida and so far zero issues. It gets warm, but I've never even triggered the overheat warning. To keep file sizes down with something smooth to edit, I use the h265 with 10-bit 4:2:0, works great.
While there are still a few minor warts, this camera ticks most of the boxes for my video needs - 10-bit, clean slow-mo, great AF, lots of lens options. I would like to see Sony widen the gap between the grip and lens mount and make it taller, Canon has a grip that's so much more comfortable. The cheap Meike grip extension solves the height issue for me. The second gain stage gap is annoying, I shoot to about 2000 or so in Slog3 then just make the jump to 12800 and just ND it because its so much cleaner than everything in between. With other profiles that number changes since the base ISO's are different. I have to keep track of that, sometimes I forget what that second stage is when not in Slog3. I haven't pulled the trigger on Type A cards either, just v90's and the Ninja for now, so no 240fps yet. But overall its been the solid 4k workhorse I've always wanted. No regrets at all.
    Cheers

I disagree.  I think its more a case that the issues we have with manufacturers still have yet to be addressed.  After so many years, we are still talking about Canon crippling their cameras, Panasonic failing to give us usable AF and Sony being poor at skin tones.
Yes, the technology has gotten better.  We now have 10 bit 4K, 120fps 4K and external RAW, but the core issues many have wished to see resolved still remain.  Also no hybrid has yet to provide internal ND, something many of us have requested for years.  Canon C70 has added it, but its not a hybrid.
You talk about 3 months, yet my nearly 4 year old GH5 is still proving hard to justify replacing given the choices available to me.

    Thanks for sharing Andrew.
I just don’t agree with these people who say the A7SIII is safe, boring and not exciting. It’s baffling to be honest.
I took it on a 6 day trip to Turkey to film a trilogy of music videos. I almost rather effortlessly acquired an immense amount of footage, beautifully exposed in the sun with crisp, detailed imagery. The experience was extremely liberating.
Now I’ve got the 1st video in edit, the footage is such a joy to grade. It’s easy to get a great image with any look you want. The only downside being the non- All-I codecs being impossible to edit natively. So I got a Ninja V.
Back to my point. This is not a boring or safe camera. This is a camera that’s been tuned to precision with absolutely no handicaps for 4k shooting. None whatsoever. No gimmicks. No cripple. Nothing. And no other camera on the market can claim this. To me it’s the most exciting camera I’ve used in a long time, because it sets me completely free.
Interestingly, I did pre-order a C70 which also looks great. I’m now debating whether to get another A7SIII and be done with it.

Well it does excel in quite a few departments. Full frame 4K/120p from a full pixel readout is unheard of at the moment from anything else this size or price. The autofocus is pretty much leading the way. The low light capabilities are also class leading.
The weaknesses are few and far between.
I've not been a huge fan of Sony lately, but credit where it's due.

Before you invest in a Sony or Canon (which is recommended for better autofocus) it's worth trying a couple of things with the GH5 to see if the autofocus behaviour improves:

    1. Update to the latest firmware as AF behaviour has been improved, slightly
    2. Shoot at 60 or 50 frames per second (60p or 50p) instead of 30p or 25p
    3. Experiment with AF speed and sensitivity in the AF menu
    4. Make sure focus mode is set to "continuous"
You might need to consult the manual to figure out how to do some or all of these things.

Gave my R5 a workout a few days ago.
Outside Temp 59F, Shot varying 8K Raw, 4K HQ/HDR 30s - 60s clips at a park.  The RF 50 1.2 AF is loud AF.  Wasn't expecting that with a 2300 lens.  Where the nano USM?  Over the course of 2 hrs got the timer down to 5min but not even a overheating warning.  Not expecting that when summer comes back around.  I was able to shoot until the battery ran out.  I was able to get by with just 2 batteries on my A7III for an entire day, but that's not going to be the case with the R5 going to have to get more than 2.  Loving the 8K RAW/4K HQ footage.  Finally a camera worthy to my NX1.  Really impressed with the HDR PQ, but couldn't get it to play back on my HDR TV via USB.  Viewing it on the DPP software is stunning.  Now I need a resolve workflow to keep the HDR PQ & metadata when I render it.
    Just my initial observation...

    Respectfully, it’s not.
The lens is just one part of the equation.
You can put great glass on a shit camera and it’s still a shit camera just as a shit lens on a great camera is still a shit lens.
A great photographer with an average camera will always out-shoot a complete muppet with uber-expensive kit.
I will put skills before kit every time.
But phones, some of them are looking a bit good and I’m one of those people that went to just using my phone over a camera...but gone back to camera despite the ‘inconvenience’.
Can’t deny the capability of some phones these days in the right hands however. There’s some great stuff in another thread on this forum.

You honestly can't go wrong with any system.

Panasonic's full frame line up which is now supporting 12 bit RAW out is really compelling. Full Frame 422 and 12 bit RAW at a $2k price point.

Canon though pricey has a wide range of very reliable and ergonomic choices with some of the best color science and auto focus.

RED has entered into the affordable market with the Komodo which gives you global shutter and 16 bit linear RAW.

Sony is maybe a bit behind but the A7S3 is pretty compelling with high quality 4k up to 120fps in a small body all in full frame with no crop and 10 bit 422 also 12 bit prores RAW out.

Z-cam is offering very ergonomic and affordable bodies ranging anywhere from M43 to Full frame with internal Prores, RAW, and Prores RAW out. Interchangeable mounts and easy to manage power solutions make it a very good option.

Blackmagic though less ergonomic in general offers affordable cameras with one of the best internal codecs out there, BRAW. 12 bit compressed RAW that edits better then almost anything else.

Can you really go wrong these days?

I watched this video just for the comedy factor. Just watching the video started giving me a headache. The Panasonic S5 is such a joy to shoot with compared to the R6. It's like Canon is selling a sports car but puts a limiter on it, rations the amount of horsepower it can put to the wheels at random times, then expects you to thank them those few times you can actually drive it like their marketing material said it could be driven.

At 3k, I think you are going to struggle to get 2 cameras such as an A7iii and a Black Magic and lenses etc, so why not just consider one single hybrid and one decent zoom?
At 3k, my pick right now would be Fuji XT4 with battery grip + 16-55mm f2.8 and you'd have some change left over.
Right there you have got shoot all day capability due to the already good in body battery and with added grip power...which nicely balance out the 16-55mm f2.8...which has a FF focal range of 24-83mm...produces excellent stills and exceedingly high video quality straight out of the box.
I honestly think it is the least compromised hybrid available right now, all factors considered including price.
My other pick would be the Lumix S5 which is what I have chosen as my hybrid, but for me, I'd prefer to shoot this as a pair with some fast primes...which are coming shortly, but a pair of anything (except maybe XT3's) will bust your budget.
My third and final option would be a pair of XT3's, with the 23mm f2, 50mm and 90mm f2 which would just sneak into your budget if you bought nearly new with the only real caveat being no IBIS or OIS with any of that so maybe less useable on the video side without mono or tripod.

I'm an owner of an EM10III and 3 lenses, but typically only use one (manual prime) ...and I make films all the time, so my perspective is that almost all this gear on the market pretty much works great if you know what you want and how to get it.

We are shooting a car commercial and then a tutorial that’s like “How to Land a Major Car Commercial” or something.
Will be using Cooke SF Anamorphics and shooting out in the elements. It’s a fantasy car commercial plot, so lots of cinematic lighting. Unfortunately we have to wait for it to snow so it might be a month before we film.
Outside of that I’ve been using it on a project that I can’t share yet, which is a bummer as I wanted to post something fairly soon after getting it.
And no, I don’t own Zeiss anamorphics, lol. That was a direct order from Panasonic as they weren’t happy with the IQ of the Anamorphot that was used for a previous video.
