To be fair there were NO specs in the press release not even megapixel count.
It was just Nikon saying "we're making a full frame mirrorless camera".
So that's no-way an indication of lack of 4K, which is in all the leaked specs present and correct. Video has not been an afterthought at Nikon since the D750. They woke up. Sony see the demand for 4K enough to do a separate model for us - A7S - which has sold well - and Nikon see the same market demand and same data as Sony do - so they will provide the video specs we need... Maybe not to the extent of a dedicated model, but certainly building on the D850 spec.
There's a lot of speculation that it will be a damp squib vs the mighty Sony benchmark.
Well actually the benchmark for a full frame mirrorless camera is the Leica SL in some respects - best EVF on the market, best ergonomics, largest grip, highest build quality.
Some of that photographic heritage is there at Nikon as well.
And they will bring it to an A7R III-like body, what's not to like about that?
I say give it a chance, because I know a lot of people are deeply indebted to Sony and invested balls deep in Sony gear, so it's hard to get your head around the fact there may be a second choice that wasn't there previously.
If the Nikon ends up outperforming the A7R III, I am sure Jon will switch like he did from GHx to A7x and change his mind entirely about his previous kit.
Just imagine IF... The IBIS is as good as Olympus/Panasonic... The EVF is as big as the Leica SL... The 4K is as good as the D850 but with extra options like HLG and Nikon LOG... And the AF is Dual Pixel... That would mean the Sony A7R III would be beaten and it would leave the A7 III to win on price but not much else.
They already are though! Sigma for one.
Given the Sigma lenses for Sony FE-mount are as large as the DSLR mount versions, you may as well use the Nikon F mount adapter and the existing versions on the new camera.
Given the way the autofocus on the latest Sony cameras, it bodes well for the Nikon in video mode.

Yes, I doubt Nikon will work closely with third party lens makers.

As Nikon would rather grab most of the pie for themselves!

However working with others I feel would be the less risky strategy, as it would make the entire Nikon mirrorless ecosystem much stronger and more likely to win out as #1 in the long run.

Just like why Micro Four Thirds is so strong, because they have so many manufacturers backing it, this is arguably it strongest point in its favor.

And sometimes rarely Nikon has worked closely with others, like at the dawn of digital when they worked with Kodak to make DSLRs.

But yeah, don't think this will happen now. But I can hope they make it an open mount! Or at least widely share it with approved partners.
That happened in a different era. When a new mirrorless could take baby steps.

The competition is hot now, Nikon must hit the ground running.

I predict this as well to happen within the first year.

A general mass market affordable adapter which can do 90% of what people want, then a high end adapter which has compatibility with all the many many many weird and wonder variants of lenses that Nikon has made over the decades.

There might even be a third adapter, which is the cheapest and lightest of them all, which only works with their modern E series lenses.

I feel you're 150% missing the point, as it wouldn't even matter if the C100 had pre amps "twice as good" as my sound recorder, as it simply is an impractical workflow to not use an audio recorder/mixer and instead record straight to camera for scripted narrative filmmaking of a certain level of complexity. To do so would undoubtedly lead to worse audio.

Transcoding to Pro Res (one highly compressed codec to another slightly less compressed) throws away  image data unless you use one of the very high end lossless codecs and then the storage size gets to be a problem - it's also time consuming and even with 4k ProRes you will still struggle to edit smoothly on the  OP's existing or proposed hardware.

Haven't you mentioned a couple of times you're not a representative sample for the market?
The gentleman you've mentioned has to say that Nikon has to surpass Sony or that Fuji has to do something else because that's how he attracts views. You'll go there for confirmation of your opinions, someone else will go again because they are 'fanboys'. It's like a tabloid war. You think it's about right and wrong. And in reality, it's about the number of views and engagements.
    - Do you think Nikon or Canon market decisions are guided by the video users' needs?
    - Do you think their 'future' depends on catering to video shooters?

Well as we've said, including Andrew, if Nikon simply matches the quality of the D850 footage and nails the rest of their mirrorless roll it then I'm sure it would be successful.

    Exactly!

Especially the point: "All they have to do is change the mount which is trivial for a manual focus lens"

Which is why I believe we'll see 20+ Z mount lenses within a year of launch, because just counting the manual lenses there are plenty coming along soon.

I still think you are missing the fundamental reasons why the Nikon lens roll out will be faster than Sony.
Sony was first to mirrorless full frame.
As such all the lenses (designed to work efficiently on the mount) had to be redesigned virtually from scratch for two reasons.
    1) To incorporate 'stepper motors' for fast and efficient 'CDAF' which is combined with 'on-sensor' 'PDAF' (which is inherently less efficient than a dedicated PDAF array you find on DSLRs). Of note the Sigma ART lenses for FE mount didnt add these motors and people have found their af relative poor on Sony A7x.
    2) Lens need to be optically redesigned to take advantage (mostly wide angle) of the much shorter registration distance. As an example the upcoming Laowa 10-18mm FE weighs 40% of Canon's 11-24.
And redesigning a lens from scratch takes quite a long time - two years to production I have read.
But once they have done that for Sony FE, they dont have to do it all over again for Nikon Z mount. The registration distance is near identical and Nikon will use a combination CDAF/OSPDAF focusing system. All they have to do is change the mount which is trivial for a manual focus lens, more difficult for af lenses unless Nikon licenses the mount details.
As an example, The Fuji X mount was launched at the beginning of 2012 and Zeiss introduced totally new lenses - the Touit line - for Sony E and Fuji X in September.

When Sony launched their first E mount camera it was a different era to the one we live in today, when mirrorless is seen to be much more important. But even then, dumb adapters appeared on the scene very quickly.

As for X mount, again in the past (but a bit more recent), however Fuji is a massively smaller player than Nikon, so less of drive to solve their mount quickly than there will be to do Z Mount. (as the first third party to nail Z mount with decent AF will surely make lots of sales)

Yeah but the idea that they will match completely just because they're gen4 is probably not true.  RED cameras cost 10x more than Blackmagic and have higher sensor rejection rates, yet their cameras do not match.

Dell Optiplex is a popular choice for offlease starter PC to use as your base, you can see lots of people have done basically this. Purchased an Optiplex then stuck a better GPU in it, plus maybe some extra RAM.

This! It is in Nikon's best interest to cannibalize their own sales now to ensure the maximum amount of Nikon shooters remain loyal to the brand for years to come. There's no telling what the next generations of Sony or even Canon cameras could bring.

If Nikon is smart enough to realize that mirrorless is the future (which I'm sure they realize, they and us probably just disagree on the timing of it) then they will surely try to make their mirrorless as good as they can because they will not mind if a person buys their "mirrorless D850" or an actual D850, as a sale is a sale!

In fact they might even prefer a buyer gets their "mirrorless D850" as that will help lock the buyer into the future Nikon ecosystem, while someone who stays with their DSLRs still has a risk that when s/he makes the leap to mirrorless from their D850 that they might not get a Nikon mirrorless but instead will leak to some other competing system.

Personally, i don't believe Nikon risks cannibalizing D850 sales by adding video features to their new MILC. We're talking a new year, new mount, new lenses, new mirrorless body type, new type of customer. No reason for them to hold back imo. The pro photogs i know that shoot D5/D850 aren't about to dump their gear to shoot their pricey lens collection with adapters, unproven weather sealing resistance, slower on sensor AF performance etc etc..
The high-end DSLR isn't going anywhere just yet in the pro sport/event photography scene, which is what Nikon caters to primarily.
Also pricing wise the D850 is roughly $3,200. The rumored price for the 45MP MILC model is $4K (including kit lens). So we're not talking "budget MilCs" and no Nikon won't be giving away stuff for "half the price of a d850".
All that being said, it is true however that Nikon have always been rather conservative when it comes to video features. Heck even the video I posted is advertising the D850 as a home video tool for the off-duty filmmaker!
The press release does give me hope as it does mention video, but i'm not expecting Blackmagic or even GH5 type advanced video specs..
It's going to be a long 2 week wait!

I am not sure the concept of crippling the video of a 'MILC' to protect your high end video gear actually makes any economic sense in the current market. It seems to me that MILCs are something of a sweet spot for video because they are video cameras largely paid for by still photographers in large numbers. And if you consider say a Sony A9 can shoot 20fps, FF, 24mp in 12 bit 'real' raw for US$4k - you can imagine what the possibilities are for video going forward.
Seems to me that crippling a MILC to protect your cinema cameras is rather akin to crippling a mobile phone camera to protect your compact cameras.

I botched my first shoot with the C200. You have to pretty much calibrate the camera for every shot. Canon calls it "Black Balance" and it fixes FPN in the lowest IREs. Still need to crush the last 1/2 ish stop of blacks to kill the bad noise. The chroma dies usually when it's uploaded thankfully.

That video is just wonderful..  Normally I remove videos when I quote posts, but it deserves a bump!!
One of the things that struck me was the DR.  I'm no expert, but the highlights looked soft (ie, not harsh) and the shadows looked nice too, with nice mid-tones.  People keep talking about skin tones when 'colour science' gets mentioned, but more and more I think (for my eyes at least) it's the DR and highlights that really matter.
As an example, the video above is in direct contrast to the below video that was shot on Canon, where the highlights look clipped / harsh / videoish.
To be fair, Matti could have shot this on his 1DXII or his 6DII, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't shoot log, so it won't be using the full DR from the sensor, and it's also some pretty difficult lighting conditions, and he might have also rushed the grade (considering he's travelling with friends and family and trying to vlog at the same time), but yeah, it's not nice.
However, to also be fair to the Nikon D850 video as well, there are lots of shots in there with quite challenging lighting conditions too.
I was saying that my shortlist was the A7III, Pocket 4K, Canon FF ML and Nikon FF ML, but I think Nikon has just gone from an academic inclusion to an option I will take seriously!
You missed out the people waiting for the Canon FF mirrorless.  The consensus is that it's unlikely Canon will do anything revolutionary, but there's still a chance, and I think there will be quite a few people waiting to see what that looks like before ordering anything.  Also, those on the fence about the Pocket 2 might wait to see sample footage and reviews start trickling in, considering the initial issues / bugs that BM had with the Pocket 1.
