IronFilm got a reaction from BTM_Pix in NAB 2018 sneak peak: Zoom F8n
I wrote up quite a long comment on YT, and thought I'd share my thoughts here as well for wider consumption as it is relevant to this thread as to why I feel the F8n is the best choice in the marketplace right now for this niche (beating out the MixPre competitors):

Something I didn't touch on is price, as it was fairly irrelevant to my points above (except how the MixPre10T creeps up near in price to what a 633 costs), but worthwhile considering if price matters to you:

MixPre3: more expensive than a Zoom F4 (but the MixPre3 records half as many inputs, and has less features).
    MixPre3 + TC: more expensive than a Zoom F8
    MixPre6: more expensive than a Zoom F8
MixPre6 + TC: more expensive than the new Zoom F8n
MixPre10T: more expensive than the new Zoom F8n + Zoom FRC-8 + iPad Mini!!

In general I agree, if you only have an iPhone, go out and shoot with the iPhone, but to be honest, Tangerine artifacts were very distractive to me, when I was watching the movie and I saw all the effort and money spent in all the aspects of the movie, it was clear to me that the decision to use the iPhone as a camera was just a commercial choice, who knows how much money Apple put on the table, but I guess was a lot, today you can get a very good camera for almost nothing, less than $600 for a Canon M50, that's virtually nothing compared to what you are spending in other areas, or if you are really tie, $150 for an original Canon EOS M and ML to get 2.5k RAW, that's peanuts!!!!

The GF1 had a real following.. I read a few reviews that loved the ergonomics when I was buying my GF3.  I think the GF1 had a button combination that worked well for some people, and they're seriously small and solidly built.  I'm not sure about the GF1, but my GF3 has a metal body, which was excellent considering I dropped it once and it slightly wrinkled the corner and that was it - a few more mm of damage would have damaged the LCD screen!

Have you seen the trailer? Is bad, it LOOKS LIKE it is was shot on a cellphone. No surprises there.

However, due to the nature of the story the cellphone style kinda sort of works for the film in a way. Not such a bad choice selecting a cellphone for it as this might have been for some other styles of films. (like if you tried doing a traditional Western or a Victoria period piece in London, then it would be much tougher to make a smartphone work for that type of film)

DJI slowed down a bit this year, the new Phantom is kind of a disappointment, and they are not changing their tiny sensors in their smaller drones. Which is not great for us. 1" Mavic Pro type of drone is my dream.

Wish they'd gone for a shorter zoom range and faster F stop like the earlier models.
And STILL no mic input. Sigh.
The RX100 line up would be so perfect as a vlog machine if only it had a mic input to go with a flip up screen

Thank you! The more time passes, the more I realize this is my favorite video production related forum.
It's got the perfect amount of users. Not too many. A core of regular users that keeps the forum pretty active, with a nice low signal to noise ratio, content wise.

Absolutely! But the price for it would have to be extremely low, due to how low priced the F4 is itself, otherwise I don't think you'd find too many F4 owners pouncing on it.

I wrote a very long list (my longest blog post ever!) of things I'd like to see (or dream of seeing... some might be unrealistic!) in the new upcoming Zoom F8n:
    http://ironfilm.co.nz/what-id-like-to-see-in-the-new-zoom-f8n/
Waaaay too long list to list it all again here, but a few random points selected:
    Audio waveforms
Metadata edit/shortcut via the PFL key
Linked safety track (thus as you adjust gain on the main track, the safety does this automatically as well)
Show the diff of external vs internal TC when compared together
An updated Zoom EXH-6 with locking XLR connections (and the F8n being able to use the Zoom EXH-6 to record 10 channels in total, rather than lose tracks 1/2 to it).
    Integration with Timecode Systems :wave
Able to use a USB keyboard without needing the Zoom FRC-8 as all at the same time, or even better, use bluetooth keyboards?
Automatic clearing of peak indicators (so I don't need to do this myself after every slating).
B format decoding for the new Rode NT-SF1

This is a good thing - film-making is a very complicated and complex topic and you're now aware of this.
My advice is to think of all the equipment as tools, this is important because:
you don't choose the tools then work out what style of art you'll make - it's the other way around great artists work inspires love for the work, not the tools - no-one asks what paintbrushes Monet used to a certain extent, the tools don't matter - as long as they are good enough to meet minimum standards then they're fine Start with what you want to achieve and work backwards.  This forum is full of people with huge amounts of experience, but we can't help you to pick the right tool for the job if you don't tell us what the job is, or if you don't have a solid idea of it yourself.
Much work is ahead of you, but if you put the effort in then you will receive lots in return.

Got a GX9 arriving tomorrow... about time I did a review of something cheap with the big shift to high-end stuff. Let me know what you'd like to see in the review of it.

Yeah, be careful not to put the filming before the moment itself!

I casually filmed my brother's wedding yesterday, and I had to sometimes quite consciously *NOT* be focused on the filming itself. Rather instead just be in the moment of enjoying and soaking in what is happening. Who cares if the framing or focus is a bit off? Never mind. I'm not there for the filming, I'm there for the wedding itself! :-)

Still a hell of a lot better than say a Panasonic GH1, and I've done just fine with that with many many shoots in the past.

Still better than most RED cameras of that era.

People need to see the context of when it was and that is was a cinema camera.

A Tascam DR10L (or even a Zoom F1) is a better set up now than an H1 with a lav.

100% agreed. I tend to feel that f4 on APS-C/S35 (or f2.8 on MFT) is the sweet spot for general purpose / run&gun shooting. Or a bit more or less is good too, such as even f5.6 on APS-C. (same as f4 on MFT)

Surely that's a no brainer.  The GH5S is the only fit (until the BMP4K arrives).
Don't know what you've heard, but it's a fantastically capable camera.
