I'm a soundie, and even I bring along extension cords! Handy to run power to my cart, or if I want my charging station to be in a particular place which is slightly different to where the power point itself is.

Having extension cords in your kit should just be totally normal if you're a DoP (or rather in your gaffer's kit).

But what do you actually want to capture?
As it doesn't matter how dark the sides are, if what you want to capture is on the stage itself (which is well lit).

    Solid choice.

Although you could probably pick up a focal reducer + 35mm f2 lens which would roughly meet your budget.

"Except for the fact this camera makes you a cup of coffee in the morning and farts golden fairy dust, what else is interesting?"

I dunno....  colors and great dynamic range seems like two really important things to me! No need to say "Except..." next to that.

Compared to newer modern cameras like the FS7 or C300mk2 or UMP? The yes it kinda is.

But of course for low budget fast turn around work, then the C100 is still a solid work horse.

    Horses for courses.

Own an Orca OR30 myself, and sometimes it feels like overkill, but sometimes it feels a bit small and cramped too. Thus, it is the perfect sweet spot for me?

I guess the OR30 isn't massively bigger than the OR28, but it is more expandable (with the wireless pouches you can add to the sides) and uses a metal frame for extra robustness.

Another thought is just keep an eye on eBay, and other secondhand sources. You can likely buy the bag then at a big discounted. Is how I got my Orca bag and my Petrol one before that.

For example, this is quite the bargain:

    That looks surprisingly decent!

Ages and ages ago then Porta Brace was a major player in the audio bag market (my Tascam DR680 bag was a Porta Brace), but for years now they've lagged behind the innovation of the K-Tek and Orca brands.

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1178100-REG/porta_brace_ar_z8_case_for_zoom.html

For instance that bag! Ick, I'd never buy that for full price.

However it seems with their latest bag they're now playing catch up. Good to see.

However it is not even shipping yet, still is "pre order" status even on Porta Brace's own website.

@wolf33d I'm not saying Sony protects their cine line. I'm just refuting that Sony has been "ahead of the competition past 5 years" in specs (I'm not talking about sales). While Sony clearly dominates with sensors, their processors always seem to be behind. Maybe it's intentional crippling, but I think it's more likely that they simply have not invested in that area as much.
In 2014, the NX1 did a 28MP readout in 30ms. The A7S II, a year later, took the same amount of time to read out 12MP. The a6300 had even worse rolling shutter in 2016 -- almost 40ms! I'm not saying the NX1 is "better," but it's an example of how Sony's processors lag behind their sensors. Perhaps their weak codecs, past overheating issues, and continued lack of 10 bit are all the result of poor processors as well? Sony leads in some areas, but not all.
Panasonic has been outputting 10 bit HDMI for 4 years now. Fuji, Nikon, and even Canon have beaten Sony to 10 bit HDMI, with Fuji getting bonus points for having it internally with a modern codec. I'd say that Panasonic has really been the one leading for specs, with Sony getting a pass because they were the ONLY FF mirrorless.
I also expect the new Sony APS-C to be close to the XT3. 4k60-- probably. 10 bit-- probably externally, but I think it will still be 8 bit internal. H.265 and 20ms rolling shutter-- I highly doubt these.
But we'll see! I certainly hope Sony knock it out of the park. I'd switch to Sony if they deliver.

Yes, if we're lucky then they're likely to just push down one of those codecs from the FS5/FS7 into a mirrorless camera, rather than invent a whole new codec to implement.

So I just spoke to the guys over at Tilta, and they told me that the Motors reset to 50% on bootup. After checking my motors this is indeed the case. They advised me that the engineers are aware of the problem and will address it in the next firmware update. Also, after retesting with the lowered setting I believe it is Ok to use with most lenses. Keep in mind, if you are only going by the reading on the fiz unit you may think the motors are set to the lower setting. However, this may not be the case. You need to check the setting on the actual motor... for now anyway.

If you compare their dynamic range testing over the last few years of the Same camera, you'll probably lose your sanity. Apart from contradicting everyone else, they contradict themselves too, many times over. And I don't think it's their fault TBO. It may have to do with the voltage and some kind of bulb or tube issued with their equipment. ???

Heh, I would roll with an Aputure A.Lav plugged straight into my BMPCC for my YouTube vlogs! Although I've since switched to using my Panasonic G6 a little more often instead and it seems to have somewhat slightly better audio than the BMPCC (certainly better the Nikon D5200, is one reason I stopped using it, the other being it was just so big and heavy for one handed usage with my arm full stretched out for extended lengths of time. While the G6 + SLR Magic 8mm is a wonderfully compact and lightweight set up)

If it is unpaid personal work then often my lazy/pragmatic side will take over! Thus why for my YT vlog I'm quite happy going straight to camera.
(Vs if it is paid professional work, then of course I'll go hard to deliver the best possible for the client)

Looks like my G85 is gonna start seeing a lot more work now. I just landed my first series of videomaking gigs for a client! Basically I'll be doing promotional work for a series of plays from now until the springtime. I know from my own experiences in the past that the theater stage can be quite dark, especially from the sides of the stage, so I'm thinking I need to pick up a fast and relatively affordable f/1.7-ish type lens soon.
Would the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 work for now? I still really want to get that Olympus 17mm f/1.8, but it's out of my immediate price range for the moment.

IronFilm reacted to kye in Fast walk-around lens for MFT?
How are you finding the Sigma?
It depends really.  It's trading speed for flexibility.
TBH I came up with the F2 limit because I just didn't think I'd be able to get the shots I wanted with anything slower, but 1.7 isn't that far off and I was being generous including all those 1.7 lenses in my list.
Basically what I'm looking for is to be able to get depth in a shot due to background defocus, but without having to make every shot a macro shot.  If you look carefully at the gallery that @BTM_Pix posted earlier for the 28mm F2 you will notice that the only shots with any background defocus at all are those with a subject very close to the lens.  I'm not looking for much defocus, just enough so that the eye gets the "that part is further away" signal and makes the mental image of the scene have some depth.  I can make bokeh with my phone if I put something 10cm away from the lens, but if I want to do it with a mid-shot of someone in a public place at 35mm I will need a lot more than F2.
Most of the time with a wide lens you want to get everything in focus, but if you're treating 35mm like a portrait lens (and cropping in to ~50mm FOV) then I want to be able to have a shot that is about a person in a generic environment without having all the signs and people in the background also featured (ie, have it blurred) as well as have a shot where they are in a specific environment by stopping down (ie, not blurred).
    lol!
I had a teacher for year 11 English class that took a rather unorthodox approach to education.  Before a test he would teach us how to pass it, but the rest of the time he would tell us stories from his life, philosophy, and various other things.  He would let people zone out, doodle, as long as we didn't talk.  There was one kid who obviously had a difficult home life who was always tired, so after a few discussions with the kid to ensure he was legit, the teacher arranged for him to be able to sleep in the next room for the class.
Anyway, he was a fan of hifi equipment and was always buying some bargain in a second-hand shop and then having to smuggle things home so his wife wouldn't find out.  I'm not sure how much of what he said was true, how much was exaggerated and how much was just story-telling, but we heard about turntables under the jumper and his walking into the house stooped over and the old "I'm ok, I just twinged by back, I'll be fine, I'll just go lie down for a bit" as he rushed through the house.  We also heard about a technique that I have actually used in the past about how to get a large subwoofer into the house.  The idea is that you buy it, and store it at a mates house.  Find somewhere in the house you want the subwoofer to be installed and work out how it would be useful as a table.  Find (or make) a table the same dimensions but make it ugly, and then install it where you want the subwoofer to go.  Wait for the wife to find it and freak out.  Explain how proud you are and how useful it is, fight for it to stay there, and as a compromise put a tablecloth / sheet over it to hide it all the way down to the floor, and make sure you put stuff on it, like a plant or whatever, so it's useful.  Wait a few weeks.  When the wife is out, swap the table for the subwoofer, but don't connect it.  Wait a few weeks.  When the wife is out, hook it up and adjust it so it's good, but don't have it that loud.  Use it when the wife is out.  After a few more weeks, use it while the wife is out but let her hear it when she returns.  When she notices it (if) then explain that you've had it for ages, it's been there for months, you thought you told her but she must have forgotten, it's really useful, she didn't seem to care that much before and why is it a problem now, etc etc...
If only I had dozens more stories like that, I could start my own YT channel!

Canon slaps you in the face with a severely compromised body and you bitch and moan about it. Then you turn your back and apply every band-aid and ointment to it that would somehow make it "the body that was promised". You should reward other OEMs instead aka take you business elsewhere.
