I don't mind it when the digital sharpness of 4K is turned down. In 1080p, it was a problem. In 4K, nope, I'm fine thanks for detail and don't mind it turned down a notch.

Sounds a bit like people who defended soft HD because you still got so much better resolution than even good SD?

So yes... Competitively speaking, it's a shit camera. But it's cheap. And it could accidentally be a nice Super 16 creative cam....

    It is US$780 body only

You could buy nearly four Z Cam E1 for that amount.

Or you could buy a Nikon D7500 for this (just went on sale btw, dropped down to this price. Well, only a hundred dollars more:  https://nikonrumors.com/2018/04/11/new-low-price-refurbished-nikon-d7500-camera-for-899.aspx/. Seems the D7500 is not only a much better stills camera, but a better video image too).

Or you could buy a Panasonic G7 with a lens and still have hundreds spare. Or get a Panasonic G85 with a lens for only a hundred dollars more.

Sorry, but whichever way I look at this then the M50 doesn't make sense. If Canon slashes its price in half then we could start talking.

This is the point of having an array of microphones to compliment a 360 degree camera..  when you shoot with a 360 camera the beauty is that you choose what angle you look in post, therefore to match this you also want to be able to choose the angle you listen to in post as well.

Now you understand the main usage of this for filmmakers, it is for use with VR cameras.

We are talking about a fundamental change in film-making.  Today = choose what to record.  Tomorrow = record everything and choose in post.

Sorry, I was wrong. As nope, you're still not getting it.

As a well placed boom mic will still be a much much better idea than one ambisonic mic stationary positioned in the scene!

And I see next to zero chance this will change any time over the next decade. (sure, maybe in the very long term this might happen, and also we might all grow wings and learn to fly via genetic engineering. Who knows!)

Before Christmas I did a TV show with extremely fast turnaround times and the 680 was sufficient. Then I had to put a small recorder in a car and the DR did its thing again! Now I am doing a few interviews and we are recording on camera and/or DR100mkII, and DR100 works for hours with its internal battery (which I have 2).

Oh for sure, if sound wasn't my #1 focus then certainly I'd still be rocking the DR680! It is pretty decent.

Heck, I'd probably *STILL* be using it if the F series (or MixPre) didn't exist.

What do you do for powering with the DR680?

so when I was ready for the F4 the MixPre announcement came, now I am waiting to see where everything goes

After the F8n comes out I don't expect we'll see anything exciting at the $1K ish price point for a while. (SD won't do it, Zaxcom/Aaton/Sonosax I expect won't do anything. And probably Roland/Tascam will stay MIA, and likely we won't get any brand new players such as BMD or AJA or something completely random)

When I use the 633, is nothing like anything else though, I guess I am expecting some of this magic from the mixpres, and the truth is that SD usually delivers.

I really need to get some hands on experience myself with a 633, as my owning of a 552 and the reviews I see of the 633 make me doubt if the upgrade to the 633 from a F4 is really worth the ROI and if perhaps I should just wait it out for the next big release of a over $2K+ recorder.

My question would be how much isolation is it able to provide?

Errr.... you're bringing this up in a discussion about the Rode NT-SF1??? That isn't what this mic is primarily about. (although the NFS video could be a bit deceptive about that)

The entire purpose of this mic is to capture sounds in ALL DIRECTIONS

  5. If you give half a sh*t about the footage I'd usually do at least ProRes LT, and I do that quite often when I know it is just for social media and the "editor" won't be doing much editing at all with it and yet would appreciate the smaller file sizes.

The D610 is coming up to 5 years old!!

I reckon the D750 is the continuation of the D6xx line.

And that camera is from September 2014 announcement, so not that many more months away until it is 4 years old.

While the D5600 is from late 2016 which is much more recent, but their entry level models tend to be updated on a quicker cycle. (although might see the D3500 before the D5700)

Here is the timeframe of Nikon DSLR cameras announcements since 2016:

    • January 2016: Nikon D5 & Nikon D500
    • August 2016: Nikon D3400
    • November 2016: Nikon D5600
    • April 2017: Nikon D7500
    • July 2017: Nikon D850
    • 2018: nothing

Been a bit slow on the Nikon front lately, one can only hope it is because they've been busy working on their new FX and DX mirrorless models!

But if they are going to release a couple of DSLR models this yeah, I'd bet (hope?) it is a D5700 (with 4K!) and a D750mk2.  As that makes sense for their next consumer and pro models to upgrade this year.

Dr680/dr100 and rent SoundDev occasionally. F4 is good, just doesn't have the extra oomph that Sound Devices devices seem to have.

Ah, so you haven't had a solid week+ with the F4/F8?

I'd highly recommend that, especially coming from a DR680 (like I did as well).

And just not convinced on the MixPre series being an overall forwards improvement.

The MixPre3 has too few channels, even the MixPre6 has too few channels. Once you subtract two to do timecode (plus remember the MixPre3/6 are each a lot more than the F4! And once you add on a few hundred more for a dedicated timecode box which the F4 doesn't need, then that further increase the price gap with the F4 even more):

So that leaves only the MixPre10T as a realistic option (unless you're talking about niche usages or as a secondary recorder rather than your main one, in those cases I'd quite like to have a MixPre3 or MixPre6!).

But the MixPre10T is over triple the price of the F4!

Unless I'm doing very high channel count I don't think it is. Plus the MixPre10T doesn't seem to be designed perfectly either, with its own flaws such as awkward powering and awkward menu knob / headphone volume and a very very tiny touchscreen (I reckon that makes an iPad or similar with it an almost essential accessory? Even just for easy clear monitoring of levels).

Really dissapointing that Tascam do not compete in this category anymore.

Ditto (as the DR680 and HS-P82 are looking rather outdated/overpriced now, but at least their DR60D/DR70D are still solid market leaders for their price points).

And I'm sad that Roland is also M.I.A. (R88 is looking just as outdated as say the HS-P82 is)

GH5 is 1 years old, and shaked the industry well. It sold amazingly well for such a camera, there isn't a company or a group of people that are in the business that do not have one, just in case. What it does is just amazing for the price. I mean, what were the other options last year? What are the other options right now, for less than 1800euros? There isn't any, really.

Also, if you need an Alexa, you take an Alexa, how the GH5 is in the same conversation with a camera that cost as much as dozens of GH5, (multiple dozens, and add a couple of GH5s dozens, for good measure!) it is seriously above me. Do really people think, that Arri is doomed because of the Pocket then?

By the time the BMPCC4K ships it will be closer to two years than one year since the GH5 announcement.

Could be that BM were keeping this so secret, they hadn't applied for the license before the announcement? Just included the codes they already have licenses for. And they were just as surprised as us to see the words 'Prores RAW' written in a banner at the convention.

I really can't see them releasing this camera without it included.

I like this explanation a lot.

I have the same issue with my electronic baking machine. 3-4 hours for just one bread! at least it overheats less than my business partner's a6300!

Maybe you should use the a6300 as a toaster.

I think you summed it up well.  This is a watershed moment.  Assuming this camera is what we think it is there will really only be refinements going forward.  If you can't get it done with this thing it's not the camera that is the problem.  Sure the camera is missing Canon's DPAF, IBIS, internal NDs, etc.  But two or three years ago nobody was even asking for that stuff (except maybe some people asked for NDs).

Am glad at least one person gets what I'm saying!

I bet 4euros, that by the time the Pocket will be ready for shipment, half of the people pre-ordering - from now until then - will have change their minds!

Don't believe half of the actual pre orders placed will be cancelled.

But I would believe if half of the people considering a possible order of the BMPCC4K changes their mind  by the time it ships.

I would not buy this for taking stills - unless you are a cinema guy and don't experct a "regular" stills camera as there is no dedicated stills functions and no mechanical shutter. But for taking a BTS frame grab its fine.

Or for location scouting it could be absolutely perfect.

The monitor is the same as the one found on their Ursa Mini 4K and 4.6K (not pro 4"). So expect what you get from that and not like 1000 nits. I think it was Stuart from BMD who said it - as a source.

Also the same as their BMD VA 5" monitor/recorder.

That's a bit like comparing apples to oranges, isn't it? I mean, the GH4 is a camera that you could rig out and shoot like a true cinema camera, while the Micro is like a super Go Pro on steroids with the ability to extract 13 stops of dynamic range.

Can rig out the Micro too, seen many nice ones.

    12 hours ago, jonpais said:

The ergos are also a bit tricky, with the side buttons all crowded together and flush to the body, while the GH4's larger, chunkier controls are easier to use, especially if you're wearing gloves.

Arguably the Micro has the potential to be better, as you can use an external hand grip control with the Micro interface port on its side, much better than trying to blindly reach for the GH4 controls.

I'm not sure what BMD are going to do with their portion of the £54.98 that I've given CVP to pre-order one.

Or how they are going to give me it back if I change my mind.

I bet 100% that BMD doesn't see a penny of that, instead CVP is holding onto all of that themselves.

  12. Yup, exactly my point, the situation is MUCH better for H.265 than when the NX1 was released. But it still doesn't have widespread acceptance.

However if you're doing all post in house then the Z Cam E2 having H.265 might be a massive feature for some folks over the GH5S/BMPCC4K.
