  1. Why don't you post a question about his complete settings (framerate, shutter-speed, manual focus or auto (guessing manual unless af on that camera is really slow/set to a slow setting), wb, auto exposure or not, lens(es) used, and how he graded it afterwards. I don't see anything that can't be accomplished on any dslr/mirrorless that has decent video-features.
  2. Holy smokes that Dracula 3D movie looked horrid.
  3. Very good summary - I would add a couple of smaller items/elaborate: Concerning Camera/Lenses: -Anamorphic lenses certainly help (though not a must) -MANUAL AF (Focus that jumps around or happens too quickly is jarring and makes it "non-cinematic" in an instant -MANUAL Exposure (and of course set well, though some of that plus WB can be saved in post depending on format) -Arguably some (regular) lenses may be considere more cinematic than others, though I would say a lot of this can be fixed in post if desired.
  4. I don't think that is a fair example though. The reason for the 41MP sensor (which granted gives noisy images in the dark), is that you don't have to incorporate a pretty bulky zoom in a small phone. In good light, it is very helpful both for video and pictures. (In bad light, you should not zoom, just let the phone/software downsize the 41MP to a farily usable quality 8MP shot (rather than the crop feature you use when you "zoom")
  5. Ok, maybe some clarification needed. I read that Panasonic this time only makes one model, not two like in the past.
  6. the second item has been answered by multiple reviews I have seen. For "ntsc", there is no recording limit. If you switch to pal/25/50, 30 min limit due to EU restrictions.
  7. well, how do you feel about the ability to shoot 1080p at 96fps? Some will find that very useful. With speedbooster and the sigma 1.8 zoom a lot of the low light/DOF advantage of the canon may go away, and of course you have a 4K camera. Can't upgrade the canon to that!
  8. I'm not sure that is an accurate recap, and whatever statements made probably had a very different context. A few days ago, 4K cameras started at $4000, now possibly as low as $1500. Before gh3, and magic lantern, the dslrs had very shitty 24/28 mbit codecs, etc. At that point raw was FAR superior.
  9. This sounds DAMN good to me so far! It sounds like down-rezzing 4K material will give me material suitable for green screening, which is a big plus in my book. It will be interesting to see how the footage in 4K vs 1080p holds up in terms of compression artifacts though. Unless I read this wrong, the 1080p footage should theoretically have more headroom in their codec(s). I'm also waiting anxiously to hear about if gh4+any recorder can output/receive 96fps realtime, in case I buy a recorder down the line.
  10. I think the GH3 is your best bet for a camera, though I am biased ;) what is your budget for lenses? You seem to highlight 40mm, how tight of a range is acceptable?
  11. why do you think you need the add-on for 4k 422-10bit? I thought I read HDMI can carry that and that the gh4 won't limit that either. You do need an external recorder, but wait a few months and you are likely looking at under 1K for that.
  12. BMD Hyperdeck shuttle does 10-bit, but limited to 1080p30 and 1080p24. I'd probably be ok with that for a while. I'm sure 4K/higher framerate products will hit the market soon. I'm mostly interested in this for some limited green-screen stuff.
  13. I can guarantee you the gh3 is better in low light for video. The 50mbps codec can pull out far better details. A hacked camera with raw will be even better but at the cost of storage requirements.
  14. search for "shian" and "gh3". Shian did a shootout and talks about it at length in a couple of vimeo vids. Bottom line is that he felt you could pull an impressive amount of details from the shadows.
  15. There's good deals to be had on the GH3 now. Far better video than any of your other choices. Find one suitable zoom with OIS and you have no worries about stabilization either. For pictures, and pretty fast lenses (like it sounds like you are interested in), I don't see IBIS/OIS as very important for wide or normal focal length. For long zooms, it is more important. Your baby will shortly start moving around, and at that point, using IBIS in low light to take low ISO shots is not as efficient anyways as you will have subject blur, even if the rest of your scene is completely sharp.

    guess camera???

Who cares about which camera??? ;) no idea really, but in my defense I just watched it on my phone..
  17. The Oltmpus is more flexible in terms of lenses, if you do hand-held. If you use the Gh3 with OIS lenses, that works great for this too. Gx7 has ibis but not as good as the oly of course. The ultimate solution in terms of stabilized footage would probably be Ep5 + a 3-axis motorized gyro gimbal (i got one of those for less than $500 on ebay)
  18. Thank you for the review! I agree with your negatives, and kudos on the portraits. Very nice!
  19. about right. MegaBytes, not megabits, hence upper case MB
  20. Having the gh3, I dont really see this as a replacement. I miss Ibis but have stabilized lenses, and i miss focus peaking but it is not implemented well on the em-1 either. The gh3 on the other hand has clean hdmi for raw, better bitrates out of the box, 24p and 60p, better crop, audio features etc. If Olympus keeps improving, Im not ruling out switching later, but kind of expect Pana to add focus peaking and ibis on their upcoming 4k camera. (big mistake if they don't...)
  21. as mentioned, audio may be your biggest challenge. At a minimum get a good shotgun mic with a windsock or zeppelin enclosure. lens advice would depend on if you are comfortable with mf lenes (which will look more pro)
  22. I really don't see this as a run and gun/newscrew/wedding shooter. I dont think any big budget or even smaller use these or dslrs/bmcc eyc either. This is for personal use, smaller indie films etc, where price is king. Maybe raw out over hdmi though??
  23. I don't see a whole lot of shortcomings with this camera to be honest. I'm stil not convinced it will have enough low light performance, but I think pricing is pretty ok all things considering. On the other hand, I don't see any reason to say that it is much better than the BMPC. Of course it is, it should be at a much higher price. As Kays and Chrad says, they probably would complement each other.
