It is only true for full sensor 4k30p, full sensor 4k60p (when the AF is disabled) has half as much rolling shutter, big difference

Yeah, that's a very fair point. Like I said before, my current predicament is debating between one of two routes for my next camera purchase; something more cost affordable, but will likely be replaced within a year or two (i.e. a Fuji XT3/4)... or something notably more expensive and heavy duty, but will hold a longer shelf live for me before I need to upgrade from it. And while obviously camera bodies are far less of a long term investment than the actual lenses, I do think the R5 is one of those camera models that would ultimately have a long shelf life. 8K RAW alone is overkill, but between that and 4K120p (with DPAF), I'd be set for quite a long time.
As much as I love my Panasonic G85 and the footage I've seen from the S1 and S1H, I get the feeling that the DPAF would far more beneficial for my current hybrid photo-video work than Panasonic's Contrast autofocus. I don't mind the Contrast autofocus in my G85 or using manual focus, but I do have to admit it's gotten in the way of my footage and photos on more than one occasion. So with the R5 having DPAF across the board with a rich image, be it RAW or 10bit C-Log internal, that's a big factor that's made me consider it over the Panasonic alternatives. Like I said before, if I were living in Atlanta or LA and focusing on my narrative filmmaking career, I'd probably go with them- but as it stands now, the R5 seems to make more sense if we're talking "Long Term Investment" cameras.
And yeah, my plan if I were to get the R5 is to buy it with the 24-105mm f4 IS right away with the camera! It seems to be one of those perfect kit lenses and would have me covered for most practical scenarios. The point about having the vintage glass was that, aside from my fondness of the aesthetic and character, it'd be a good cost effective way to have other special cases covered for my work until I could afford to buy other RF glass aside from the 24-105mm f4.

Perhaps it might be overkill, but I do like using vintage glass a lot of the time whenever I don't need to rely on autofocus. I do plan on investing in RF lenses too if I get the R5, but it's a matter of price and what lenses are available by that point in time.
I suppose if I really save my pennies, I could try to eventually nab the RF 28-70mm f2 lens. That lens does seem pretty magical...

This camera is probably overkill for using manual lenses and the IBIS might not work as effectively without electronic contacts. (The Panasonic S1 series/Leica SL2 are the only ones which are 5-axis with every lens so they are best suited to manual lenses, Nikon/Sony is only 3-axis and I guess Canon will behave similarly)
I mean, it will still work just fine, but the whole point of this camera is to have full compatibility with EF and RF lenses with full Dual-Pixel Af support (and of course Canon colours), while also offering full feature set that the internet was complaining about until now. I am using manual lenses on the EOS R as well, but not many people do.
In my experience, RF lenses are the way forward for both photo and video (but the EF lenses are still quite good, too).

It won't have any compromise regarding low light or dynamic range as long as the 4k30p is downsampled from the 8k, which it probably will, while the 4k60p and 4k120p are going to be line-skipped.
The rest is impossible to make without some sort of compromise, the EOS R battery life is really good but it has no IBIS and full sensor video, although the new battery is higher capacity which should offset it a little bit. 30-minute limit is a given, but it should be fine until that time, or it should be better with an external recorder (which also records is a less demanding codec)
Rolling shutter will be interesting, as the sensor has to have a fairly decent speed to have 8k30p mode in the first place.
It is not aimed at the professional video market and it is not going to cannibalise the EOS R5.
Yes, it will do 4k60p and 1080p120p, but I don't expect the cheap sensor to have great dynamic range to start with, so it will be restricted to 8-bit 4:2:0 H.264 IPB codec and no Canon Log. Of course people have been shooting on the 1DXII without Log for ages, so it's not like one can't produce great video with it. But it will be a big step down form the R5, as it should be for almost half the cost and the EOS R will remain relevant as the 'cheap' option to have access to Canon Log, but no IBIS.

Fuji's IBIS is like Panasonic's auto focus. They just don't seem to care.

padam got a reaction from ade towell in What REALLY prompted Canon suddenly to get their act together with video?
With the cost cutting on the displays and build quality, it can be seen as a much cheaper 6D-class camera with IBIS, 4k60p and 1080p120p
8-bit 4:2:0 IPB compression (8-bit 4:2:2 external) and no Canon Log (crop, no AF in some modes) would be the most logical to expect from Canon., capable as a consumer camera, but not a pro-level camera either for stills or video.
Which would mean that for better dynamic range, 10-bit or RAW codecs (to CFExpress cards) one needs to step up. But we'll see.

And yes lower-res 4k RAW would be useful, except that's exactly what their Cinema cameras provide, so I can't see them putting anything similar in a stills camera.

Or next year, the 1DX III 5.5k60p RAW recording capability with IBIS will be put in a mirrorless camera (for about the same price).

I find the 5.5k RAW quicker than 4k 10bit h265 in Resolve Studio on a PC.....

It was a simple design decision on the C300 Mark III. They've kept the EF mount because of compatibility, all the glass obtained and used for any Canon cinema camera fits on these new models from the get go and it can be swapped out for PL as well. They also don't have to re-engineer anything on the camera for the new RF platform, it saves costs, enables them to improve other areas.

In their first cinema-related RF mount camera, they will probably make something smaller and more modular, to sell their V-ND EF RF adapter instead of having internal ND at a higher price. That could wait until the next generation, maybe then they will switch to the electronic variable ND as well, since they do have a patent for it.

Complete BS (Ken wants you to use his affiliate links, and not buy it from somewhere else for potentially cheaper), the firmware will update on any camera, no problem. The only difference is with some brands, some languages and frame rates are not available (the fp is NTSC/PAL switchable, so no problem there)

The ND adapter is a god send, and better quality than most screw on ND too in terms of reflection and loss of contrast when shooting backlight situation.

No one is happy about the crop or the rolling shutter (I am sure you were very happy about Log in the 1DXII), it is just what one gets from Canon at this price range and it still looks quite decent, simple as that, the RP is just way too limited in every way for not a whole lot less money. Panasonic Sony or Nikon all do FF 4k with internal stabilisation, but somehow I just don't prefer how they look. They also don't have the lens selection and support that Canon has.
Looks very solid to me, rolling shuter or not.
I think that this external raw thing could be completely bogus anyway, since originally it was offered 10-bit 4:2:2 external recording(4k only, so no 1080p FF to fight the trolling shutter), but maybe it is one of those rare cases, where they do actually react to what's out there (but it could take a fair few months to update the firmware anyway, even ver. 1.2 is a month away).
If someone would crack the RF code and release a fully functional RF-EF focal reducer, for the EOS R (just like there is one for the M50), it would probably sell like crazy.

Magic lantern is making a lot of progress with 3K+ on the 5D mark 2!
Seems what happened with the 5 year old mark III in 2017 is now happening with the 10 year old mark II...
    3K announcement: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.msg205638#msg205638
Initial 4K progress (10.5 frames per second): https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.msg208417#msg208417

The 5D mark II has always been limited to 30fps, but there is also some progress in getting higher framerates:  https://twitter.com/autoexec_bin/status/1048804509827452928
The forum user reddeercity has some builds on that thread.
I am super excited about this, even spent 100 pound on a new motherboard to fix my camera.
Video I made using the 3K build:
Shot in 2880x1080 resolution, Graded + converted to ProRes using MLV App (https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App), edited in Pitivi on linuX.
Lenses: Jupiter 9, Helios 44, Takumar 135mm, cosina 19-35 (for one shot)
If anyone wants an MLV or DNG or something from the video I can provide.

The guy like most others is sharing his personal beliefs, take it or leave it. Honestly, most reaction videos on anything are pretty much useless, if they are not entertaining. That's even worse than holding a camera in your hand and telling your audience how great (or utter crap) it is.
I do understand why they do these kinds of videos, I just think that  the reason people like these is that they are a member of a camera group and it solidifies their beliefs, whatever that might be. Because if you haven't established yourself and don't love (or hate) something, people that share a different opinion will start to dislike you - even though the audience should care more about the person, rather than whatever gear he is using.
But the saddest thing is that I see people with great content, and they can't grow much, because they don't base their content around gear itself (which is how I've found them in the first place, which makes it even more ridiculous)

Maybe I should invest in an A7SIII as soon as possible, and do a decent review about it just to get going. That's how ridiculous this actually is.

There is no better way of saying this, it costs 450 Euros (and the circular polarizer is an optional add-on as well as a clear drop-in filter in case you don't want to change the whole adapter when not using any ND)
The C100 produces a much sharper (nicer) HD image, a downsampled 4k from this camera is more in line with what that looks like (but worse rolling shutter) but the internal codec is much better than the C100. The rolling shutter is much better in HD.

If you have to work with lights that are already there (like an event or a wedding) it is not necessarily that simple.
Also, it is nice to be able to achieve any look that one wants or prefers, but it may take time that is not being reflected in the amount the client is willing to pay. So in that way, a camera that has a pleasant baked-in look may matter. You also use one differently to another, and it may affect the outcome.
One needs to use it well, whatever that is, but for every video saying the gear does not matter there is another one saying that it kind of does.
    Nice work anyway.

I remember when I brought the 1Dx II more than two years ago and a lot of people were saying when the Sony A7s III will come, when the G5 will come, when this and when that.... 2.5 years after if you need 4k 60p and great AF the 1Dx II is probably still the best choice. It is not perfect but is a great camera.
Considering that it is a 2.5 years old model I would try to find a used one instead of buying a new one...
    Pro:
    4k60p with great quality
    Super video AF
Solid codec 4:2:2 (funny that everybody is saying that the EOS R has fixed the codec but the ALL-I at 480Mbits is 4:2:0, I take the 1Dx II at 500Mbits 4:2:2, the addition of the 120mbits h264 is anyway welcome on the R)
    Very good rolling shutter
4k120p with AF (quality ok, not great)
    Super sports/actions camera for photo
    Very quick camera to operate
    Cons:
    No C-Log
    Expensive
CFcard for 4k60 are expensive but got cheaper lately
    Big and heavy
    No Zebra
    Fix LCD
If you do only video I think the C200 is a better buy but if you want a camera that does it all the 1Dx II is a solid choice (assuming that 4k60p and great video AF are key requirements)
