Emanuel got a reaction from webrunner5 in GH5S Sample Footage and Reviews
I'm afraid they would even charge much more if they would call it Mini-Eva... LOL
So, GH5S is not actually a bad denomination choice to state it quite frankly and pretty straightforward.
I am personally done with smartass manoeuvres from business players trying their best to go and get deeper from my indie pocket. Nuff said, Panasonic is usually a decent brand. Even though, that premium fee is not the best signal under such policy. IMHO that's a business mistake. So, in this perspective because 2500 bucks for this outstanding machine it is still a bargain anyways, I am really not surprised with the clientele reaction on GH5S sales.
With IBIS, focus hack results (AF mantra has been a sales distaster IMNSHO) or changing contrast AF with DFD technology for a most accurate autofocus proposal indeed and the same price of GH5, this camera would be a terrifying hit, count on it : )
In any case, it is the best cinema camera out there for the price, no doubts on it.
If you can only buy one, buy this toy and you won't have buyer remorse at all but a purchase which will heedfully convert in your utmost investment to date. Dare yourself and you'll see the real meaning of this statement, not only virtual words somehow addressed in any tech forum ;-)
Don's fully right... This cinematic device is the best tool available nowadays to shoot a feature with. At this price range and hybrid (I'd rather call GH5S 'handy' : D instead) class ride.
E :-)

People on eBay right now when they try to outbid EOSHD members for used NX1's.

Emanuel reacted to Mattias Burling in Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
Yeah I dont think they ever tried to emulate exactly with Acros, velvia, etc. Its more a naming thing with a hint of those stocks character.
And I also agree on the less need for post to save skin approach. I gave up dialing down contrast and saturation a long time ago. My philosophy is that someone have spent alot of time and money on the baked in curves. And they are probably a better starting point than what I can get.
On fuji I usually pick a look in camera and only do minor luma tweaks in post. Looks great imo.

Well that was the guy who hacked the GH2... I assume he has some contacts?
As deezid said, the 6K anamorphic mode seems to have less in camera sharpening... so with a good downscale, you can probably get some cinematic 2K/3K.
Now I only shoot 1920x810 2:35 on my 5D3, so I agree 1080p is usually more than enough. But with the GH5... the softer 6K anamorphic with IBIS is definitely a selling point that the more expensive GH5s cannot do.

The 6K mode on the GH5 is actually less sharp (sharpened) than 4k. It looks smoother but shows more detail if that makes sense.

Guys, please stop :X Let the thread go back to the right track, OK? (to be sincere, playground is more than enough, as well the leftover going along with extra downvotes polluting other threads too... thanks for your understanding : )

@webrunner5 It is a miracle, you've perfectly nailed it with your American English, but don't blame the Fuji device, buddy! People kill people, not the tools ; )
I don't think people see Fuji's as their savior in any way other than as matching their tiny agendas by their inner own. On the other hand, Fuji has no high-end to protect other than their medium p-h-o-t-o-g-r-a-p-h-y format. A feature takes ages to comply. We live in hurry times. People have no time to read, why should they have time to go beyond easy LUTs? :-D
Ditto & Amen : ) Don't forget Panasonic brand is known by their innovation and prosumer approach, extending their high-end abilities to their minor offer if we can call it so :X

Emanuel reacted to BTM_Pix in RED and Foxconn to create range of affordable 8K prosumer cinema cameras
All about plausible deniability isn't it ?
I might go with "Remember when said I fancied an iPhone X dear? Well, good news, I've found something cheaper so I'm actually saving us money here".
Although 3D cats could actually also be just as effective.
I was thinking about the GoPro fusion as VR does fascinate me but if I'm going to flush money down the drain on something with a completely uncertain adoption fate then it might be better to be in on the ground floor of something new with the Hydrogen.
Although by the time RED ship it, I might only exist in virtual holographic form myself!

Emanuel got a reaction from kidzrevil in Sony A7R III announced with 4K HDR
Let's give 2nd look on that test a chance...
People generally have that idea. Banding depends on the bit depth.
That test leads to a bit different path though.
Actually, it is even beyond color sampling, also bit rate.
That is, not only bit depth.
Practice redefines theory much often to keep going to ignore the evidence : ) Mark's @markr041 posts hinted it all :-)

@Kisaha I agree with you. But please let's not compare color science between manufacturers! IMNSO people tend to understate this important aspect of making pictures. Just sayin' : )
FF look or similar is nothing but also a full combination of lots of aspects, optics included. Add an inexpensive f/0.95 Mitakon, only as an example, and you'll have it on APS-C format as you well know it :-)

Torteloni with sausage. Had the pineapple while waiting.
And now to a productive afternoon fiddling around with a camera!

First question has to be what are you having for lunch ?

Mine arrived this morning. I've got some work to do now but I'll be playing with this after lunch if you have any questions.

Emanuel reacted to Deadcode in How Important is 10-Bit Really?
I did the exact same test with a6300 SLOG2 and it was smooth before/after REC709 correction.
On your sample i can see banding on the 8 bit footage, but the bitrate is very low (16Mbps). So i would like to recreate your sequence but with Resolve > ProRes HQ, and 8 bit forced high bitrate reencode from that ProRes to h264.
Or maybe i post my footage later

Emanuel got a reaction from Gordon Zernich in Sony a7 III discussion
Funny. I find the above example much more interesting for the subject matter there in that picture than this whole hole this new high sensitivity offers. Not every tech aspect will really help this art and craft. Just thinking out loud here, not directly addressed to any side on discussion :-)

Emanuel reacted to Tim Sewell in Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
I have no skin in this game, but on the Fuji camera forum I frequent a couple of people who have received their X-H1s are reporting that the AF is noticeably quicker. Obviously that's for stills - and they haven't detailed the lenses used - but I guess we shouldn't dismiss it too early. Those of us who use Fuji cams know that there is a difference similar to that between the weather in England right now and that enjoyed in the Florida Keys in AF performance between lenses.

Emanuel reacted to Trek of Joy in Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
Plenty of people do paid work with 8-bit material. I've shot a number of events and done a few cheap/free broadcast commercials. All were 8-bit, and I go back to the 5d2 in like 2008 or so. All of the spec was either 720/60p or 1080/30p and a minimum bitrate of 50mbps. I've never shot 10-bit or more outside of tinkering with a C300 and a Red a few times. Scratch that - I had a BMPCC for awhile, so I did shoot some raw/prores. But I never did any paid work with it because the workflow didn't jive with my run-and-gun shooting style.
People keep repeating things like Netflix of BBC standards, which in most cases apply to them - not everyone. I know people that have shot stuff for Discovery, Nat geo and so on with gear below their published standards. If you're doing stuff for broadcast, then it might be an issue, but if you're shooting weddings or TV spots, its not an issue.
I never understand why people criticize specs from their own bubble. If you want a 10-bit camera, this isn't for you. If you want to shoot for 3 straight hours, this isn't the camera for you. Move on. Why keep repeating the same numbnut argument and clogging up this thread?
Back to the XH1- I absolutely love Eterna. 24p looks beautiful. I'm much more excited about this camera than the A7III. It looks like a winner. I'm looking forward to mine arriving soon.

Don't be so pessimist : ) Non-intra 200mbps should be enough to overcome eventual weak bit depth issues... :-)

Sure Matthew, if you follow my posting you'll find the same attitude, no worries : ) I mean it seriously. I had added a similar perspective inside some other paragraph meaning but you seemed to have missed it from my earlier post :-)
Indeed (out of likes again... this 10-likes limitation is a bitch but post count is post count :D) aside the fact these cheap devices are not exactly outside because of lack of cinematic properties despite any much more expensive tool must bring some add-on to play with, well said, I invariably much appreciate your insights too :-)

I wouldn't say I missed it, I'm simply adding another perspective. Also, please don't ever feel targeted, I mostly speak in generalities in search of the average take away. I also don't mind being wrong. I'm too old to be worrying about my viewpoints become bigger for me than finding common ground amoung good people. I'd rather have friends than have the last word.
I concure, and in fact think that we're already on the tip of that point right now. It's going to get real interesting.
