@Matthew Hartman Another factor: Any brick and mortar store that has a wall of TVs is viewed relative to all of the other TVs. Then it becomes a race to which TV has the "brightest" and "sharpest" image.

BLOCKER by Afternow
A new way to previs with your phone. You can program which camera you'll be using, and different focal lengths. Drop in characters, adjust their height, and sun/light placement. Then figure out blocking. It has a few funky bugs but it's freakin amazing for a free app.

What's your experience with it as a grading monitor? It could be interesting to have as a director's monitor and additional monitor for the editing, but I am reading that this is not true 10 bit and not very accurate.
It definitely takes some trial and error b/c the monitor is so bright, and can display wider DR that was is seen on most monitors. It's great for the field b/c you see super detailed things that are hard to see on a 7" and pixel peep on the DR. For grading, it takes a bit of getting used to. I keep a window open on my Dell 4K monitor as well to compare what it looks like at 400 NITS, which most people will be viewing.

I just picked up an Atomos Sumo M on sale for 1500, and now I use it as a field reference, and a grading monitor. I can judge color/exposure on the same monitor from start to finish.

The brightness is a lot different between the 701 and 702. Which camera are you using? I've done an A/B with my UM46K display, and SmallHD 502. They're virtually identical.

SmallHD colors are great IMO.

What does your Quasar kit look like? I thought about renting those too since they're super popular right now.

By glass, you mean our lenses, right?
Yes. Drill a small hole in the rear element. Pour beer into the lens with a funnel. Patch it up. Then raise your glass!

Raise the glass!

I use ShareGrid. Very reliable. They verify your ID, and insurance. I've considering offering my SLR 2x Anamorphic Prime to rent. Also, an Aputure 300D kit.

One of the nice features that are new to the X - 24p. Filmic Pro is definitely a must have though for shutter speed control.

I haven’t found much use for HLG after alot of testing. It’s great if you need to deliver in HDR straight from the SD card, but if you’re grading in Resolve then VLog still takes the cake with DR. Convert VLog into a Rec2100 or 2020 timeline and export HDR.
-
@hyalinejim you may have to increase the Luminance Mapping and Saturation Mapping to get the full range of Log C before converting to Rec 709. At least that's how I've been able to get the most out of VLog conversions.

@AaronChicago did you make it work on your 502?
Yes I did.

I'm eating my words. I talked with SmallHD and there actually is a crop and scale setting inside the page menu (not the main menu). Awesome!
-
I'm going to send an email to SmallHD and see if they'll ad the crop & scale feature on the 502.

On SmallHD monitor you can scale the image after you have the anamorphic stretch chosen.
When I shoot with my 2x anamorphic + gh5 + SmallHD Focus I put the scale value to 75 (width). Then it fills up the whole screen. I believe this custom scale setting is in all SmallHD monitors.
The ”6k” anamorphic (4:3, 4992x3744) mode can’t be viewed when recording from SmalllHD which is a bummer. You will see it when not recording but after hitting rec you lose the signal.
Interesting. I don't have that scaling option on the 502. I normally just select Canon 5D scaling and it helps fill out anamorphic, although not 100%.

Dell 27" 4K IPS, I believe it's 350 nits.

Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?

Looks damn good. Those Fuji film simulation just nail contrast and color without any tweaks. I was messing around with video on my x100f and couldn’t believe how amazing skintones looked, but file was brittle as hell when moving. Reminded me of the ole T2i. I’d love to play around with some files from the X-H1.
