I don’t usually write about higher end cameras on EOSHD because this site is for aspiring filmmakers and always will be, but I am tech addict and I love it when barriers are broken in the field of engineering. The Sony CineAlta F65 is one such camera.
Sony will eliminate the optical viewfinder on all future DSLRs. Sony Spain let slip in a presentation that the Japanese electronics giant plans to release all future Alpha DSLRs with the SLT translucent mirror technology found on the A33 and A55. No more optical viewfinders and traditional mirror-box DSLRs from Sony. In fact the name ‘DSLR’ will be consigned to history and replaced with Alpha SLT.

There are signs that a lack new product releases are hurting Canon and Nikon’s sales. First sign comes from Japan (thanks 1001NoisyCameras), ever a forward looking market. Here Canon and Nikon’s duopoly on DSLR sales is no longer what it once was, down to just 60% of the market – roughly 32% to Canon and 28% to Nikon.

Contrary to what some believe I don’t dislike Sony or pro video cameras. Back in the earlier days of DV I used to shoot with a series of different Sony cameras. The Sony VX2000 was an affordable competitor to the legendary Panasonic DVX100. I upgraded to the more rugged Sony PD170 with XLR jacks and lots of nice pro features but unfortunately very similar image quality. My last Sony camera…
UPDATE – will Sony keep the box form factor? They have done it before with the Sony HDC-P1. Sony have announced a $7k AVCHD camera with 24p and 35mm sensor. Aimed squarely at the AF100 and Red Scarlet, the boxy looking prototype gives little a way right now but I’m gathering more info as the story unfolds.
