I agree.  Funnily enough, I also have a Computer Science degree :)

Me too, is everyone in this thread (aside from webrunner ? ) aged 34?

This thread does indeed attract a certain type of people. I'm also 34 and I've got a PhD in algorithms. (I am hardly as knowledgable about wedding photography, as my username suggests). Maybe we should band together to make an end of manual wedding photography and create Skynet

I would think in this day and age walking around, especially at the Reception, with a cellphone might render better, more natural looking shots. Not many people like to have a C300 shoved in their face and act normal. That is the beauty of cellphones, most people ignore them.

On the flip side some couples want to see the big cameras, as they associate that with high end. I think it will be a while before that changes. Even now most people have no idea what or why cinema cameras are expensive and used professionally or how they compare to a cell phone camera.

I've definitely seen that more with corporate work than with wedding work. I've had a few moderately tech savvy couples, but most don't care at all and just trust your portfolio. If anything, they appreciate a smaller profile.

Definitely depends. I know a company that hires like 4-5 shooters for weddings just to look more "big scale". Decided not to work with them as I think they are full of BS lol

Well there is nothing wrong with making a buck. Glad it is working out for you. I did weddings for years back in the film Hasselblad days. But taking up a lot of weekends got pretty boring after years of it. What I really liked was doing Model Portfolios lol. I wonder why? I met some girls, women that I knew for years through it. It was gratifying in more ways than one. They are in reality pretty challenging not to make it look like a Porn shoot to be honest. I used to practice on my wife in the beginning. It is not as easy as it looks to do well. Some of them went on to make a buck or two at it modeling, etc. Nice to know I helped. And it helped my skills also.

Most Modeling agencies back then Only wanted B&W shots for some reason. That stuff is challenging both shooting and developing it. I thought it was harder than doing Slides, and they were hard. Print film was Really hard to screw up, it had a Ton of Latitude. When I first started out in Photography, back in the time of Jesus lol, I Only used print film and I thought hell, what is the big deal? I am either a natural Wiz at this, or it is over rated as hell. Boy was I wrong! ?

ok dude. I am glad you are making money off of someone else's intellectual property. lol

I'll use copyrighted songs that were playing during the reception as I think its part of the documenting and capturing the feel of the event. Wouldn't use it to promote what I do though.

I was referring to buying an mp3 or ripping if off directly youtube, putting it on your editing timeline, manipulating it is a big hell nah. If you captured the audio while it was playing as use some bits and pieces, sure. You upload a 40 min non-stop take of a party. Might be fair game However, cutting a montage to Bruno Mars or any popular artist without purchasing the license is too much of a risk. It becomes a race to the bottom. LOLLL

I could just as easily had uploaded to youtube and let youtube give the credit to the artist with no issue and the video is demonetized either way.

The issue is you sold that video to a client and used music that isn't your own. Which I am sure probably breaks some law.

Ah ok, well nothing wrong with that. Also sorry to accuse you of that, didn't really have the info to say that.

Actually, using copyrighted music like that without paying for a licence would STILL be a crime in many jurisdictions, it just means since it isn't going online, it would be much  less likely for the copyright owner to know they were being ripped off.     If that is fine with people, ok, but then I would hope people who do that are also happy for their photos and videos to be used in a similar way.
