  1. Ehh, not looking good for MFT or even LUMIX for that matter. Real shame.

There is nothing left for them to capitalize on anymore. We have fast full frame 4K120p 40-50MP sensor cameras with crop version variants coming for RF and Z-mount and maybe even Sony E-mount.

They should just focus on releasing a PDAF FF LUMIX camera with as much gusto as possible and work on getting L-mount fleshed out with exciting lenses.

It makes me laugh that you say Sony have improved their colour science a lot since the A7III.  The A7III was much improved compared to the ones before, and those were much improved compared to the ones before that, and the ones before that.....

Much improved to me is less work in post. So yes, they are improving.

Would that might make an 8K workflow achievable without a super computer?  I saw comments from the YT crowd that they couldn't edit the RAW files from the R5 even with their $30K+ Mac Pro computers.

Does anyone here even own an R5?

I have an R5, too. After the firmware updates it has been a great camera. I use the 8K as a specialty mode for faking slider or other camera movement in 4K timeline or lower. CLOG3 improved the DR issue and I think it looks great compared to other Sony cameras. The 4KLQ mode is more than useable for YouTube long form content. It's better than EOS R and that was a great "YouTube" camera. I can edit everything (8K isn't completely smooth) off of a $1600 M1 13" MBP. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

Can't wait to see more from Canon. Sony has been crushing the technical side of things and their color science has improved a lot since A7III days.

I think the trick of it is to really REALLY consider purchases in the first place and their longevity.

Yes, I would much rather pay a higher price to not deal with the stress caused by dickhead scammers. That time you never get back. Money can be made, time can't.

So I take the hit and sell gear to shops with more consideration for what is needed versus wanted.

  5. Would be nice to see a channel that reviews camera gear but waits for the actual product to be on the shelves and rents it for the review and testing.

No company contacts. No free products given ahead of time. No pressure to say good or bad things about it. No marketing spec bullshit to say.

It would have to be funded by donations, memberships, and ad-sense revenue.

Gerald is the only channel I watch for product launch marketing and I do it with a pinch of salt. I'm there for a synopsis of the manual and capabilities of the camera (hopefully tested), but I don't care for the conclusions or buying advice given. He should just cut that out of his videos all together because it's ludicrous to give buying advice to people with such varying needs and wants. But since Amazon affiliate links are broken as fuck, everybody does it.

  6. Ebay (and PayPal) is toxic as fuck. I don't know how anybody can use it. I tried to sell some unused camera stuff a few years back and every bid I got was fraudulent and some dickhead trying to get me to send a product before PayPal payment "cleared". Meanwhile E-bay takes seller fees. 🖕🏻

The whole experience is dog shit and after that I never touched the site again. Same with PayPal. They fucking suck too.

If you factor in the time and stress, @Andrew Reid, that you had to deal with you are out much more than £1754.

The auto translated subtitles are actually pretty decent to be able to follow along.

For fans of Aty, one of the locations they shot in this video looks suspiciously like one of the waterfall areas that he frolics about in.

Weird, my subtitles were stuck to Japanese.

  8. I believe this is Japanese but even without understanding anything I can tell it was a way better "review" or hands-on than DPReview did.

Yes, the Youtube influencer machine is awful, but Gerald is the least offensive offender. He does all technical reviews, true, but at least he does a thorough and honest job. Only CVP is anywhere close to the usefulness of his reviews from a pure tech standpoint.

Yes, I have nothing against information style videos like Gerald did. I quite enjoy CVP much more as they actually use the camera and offer feedback. Gerald's videos are kinda like technical launch promo videos. I find the deep dives of the technical bits useful and I throw the rest away, including any buying advice. Infinitely more useful than anything from Peter McKinnon or Matti. They are now purely lifestyle channels with a camera fetish slant. When people say influencer those guys are the textbook definition. When they want something they ask or e-mail companies to send them free shit and then tell you to stay humble.

Never thought I'd see the day when the author of this blog would stoop down to some youtuber that is clearly a technician.

Dude has no idea of what constitutes art and does not care. He's in it for the views and the afillo links.

    Guess it's 2021.

I don't see the big deal. It's free content where he pretty thoroughly tells you about a camera. Use your brain to decide if its right for your artistry. Rent the gear and try it out.

Andrews beef was he compared it to Sony A7R series and judged it by that and not just let it stand on its own. Perhaps Gerald should stop giving buying advise and just stick to telling you facts about operating modes and handling and use cases based on the time he had with it. The ALEXA Mini is a terrible camera when you try to shoehorn it into a consumer A7 series criteria checkbox list (no grip, no EVF, hard to hand hold) It's just a different tool.

Based on information from multiple sources, Canon originally planned to announce this camera as R1. However the Sony A1 was completely unexpected and too competitive. So Canon made a strategic decision to reposition this camera as R3, buying time to develop R1 that can truly compete with A1.

    Interesting. Probably a 20MP sensor.

  11. To be fair Gerald’s audience isn’t who the fp camera is for and he knows it.

I was recently looking at the fp-L + tiny sigma 24mm f3.5 as a small b-cam and backup high-megapixel photo camera (electronic shutter not an issue for my use case).

I agree the 61MP sensor in such a small body is pretty cool and the ability to strip it down by taking off a modular grip and EVF is attractive. Lots of options.

I would still like to see a bit more ecosystem pop up before I drop some money.

My bet is a pro 3 this year with M43 sensor and interchangeable lenses.

ZENMUSE X5S is exactly this and it is much bigger. Perhaps they can get a M43 sensor with a slightly redesigned camera module. M43 is around 24% larger. I think the sensor size is doable but the optics might be harder.

  13. Depending on how they implement the eye-controlled AF it could be really, really useful, especially in video applications. Although, it would take practice.

I'm not sure how it was implemented in the EOS 3, but hopefully it is programmable to a button like back-button-focus and that it uses your eye focus as an intelligent subject focus giving it more information about what is important in the frame.

Think switching quickly between two athletes in the heat of the action or wildlife/bird photography and focusing on the bird and not the grass or branches in front. Kinda like a AF limiter that narrows the amount of decisions the AF has to make to determine what it should track.

  14. Something looks off about the rendering. Perhaps a early internal mock-up design?

Also, the naming. Reviving a one off EOS 3 back in the film days. Could also be they are just segmenting the market more to make sure they hit every price point because they plan on charging a hefty price for a flagship R1.

Will be interesting if this is the “R5C”, ie not a real C badged Canon but basically an R5 internal specs on steroids with mechanical shutter and then the R1 will be $2000-3000 more and perhaps global shutter.

Partially as they also don't have explanation how it works. What we know that RAW, RAW with Clog (more headroom for HL but more shadow noise) and RAW with Clog3 (even more headroom for HL but even more shadow noise) are different but stilly RAW as you can apply WB,  any log curve, etc.. They process RAW with Clog3 on by applying a Clog2 curve in Resolve.

Now I'm even more confused.... would be nice if Canon would publish a white paper that explain what they are doing....

They also mention that this is strange and question if it is true RAW data as something is being processed in a certain chosen gamma.

  16. 4 minutes ago, independent said:

Right, "gradation in highlights" = better highlight rolloff.

That's the purpose of the clog3 gamma curve, to allocate data across another stop (or so). Clog has a steeper curve in the highlights, so you don't get as smooth of a transition. But clog3 has a penalty in the shadows though.

    8 minutes ago, gt3rs said:

There is no curve in RAW as it is impossible as is not debeyered

That's why they find the wording in the manual from Canon confusing.

Have been testing the R6 and one major irritant for me is that I can't use the cameras touch screen and record internally when I have an external monitor hooked up. Really shitty thing to do, is this the same with the R5?

    Yes sir.

They should just make a battery grip that contains an M2 SSD slot that automagically connects to the camera and records the compressed raw on that - bingo..  "external" raw.

Or licence Prores from Apple and offer those options.

....or just make it possible to select whatever bitrate and bit depth you want and turn off sharpening, that would do it for me.

I think there is also the issue of "how" the RAW data is compressed not just the insanely broad "all RAW from camera compressed higher than 3:1" belongs to RED.

Canon clearly has some kind of deal with RED when there is CRAW Light 8:1 in Hybrid DSLM R5. This, and the fact they fit internal NDs in RF mount flange, makes me incredible excited for future camera generations from Canon.

So I find it doubtful we will see RAW in GH6. I would be really surprised. I think they should do what Sigma did and just offer uncompressed 10-bit and 12-bit RAW and develop that external storage grip solution you are proposing and have the huge file sizes countered with cheap M.2 SSD media recording.

It has been forever since we heard even a whisper of a rumor about hybrid GH cameras. They are either entirely reworking the model line or they are going to kill it and focus on S series FF cameras.

I want a mini 250 g with 1'' sensor, not interested in bigger drone as is now just a pita especially here if you need/wants to fly over people. Would be already good 10bit with log in the current mini 2

I think we will see it...eventually. But I also think the drone laws will get more restrictive as FPV drones become more popular.

  20. Still a shame they didn't keep the OG Air form factor. I guess that is what the Mini is now...

Even if it had terrible flight time, I would rather have a small, light 1" sensor drone with 10-bit log to throw up for 5-8 mins to get unique prospective with high quality video.

This also means a Mavic 3 Pro is probably coming this year as well.
