Juxx989 reacted to kye in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
I think this thread needs a reality check, and luckily Caleb Wojcik just posted one.
Some of the points he made were:
He loves the image but the camera is a pain to use and so often stays at home in favour of his 2 x C100 mk2 It was expensive, and the battery life, proprietary accessories like touchscreen, storage, media readers, handle, chargers, and everything else cost about $25K US about two years ago In fact it was so expensive that he left it locked up because of fear of using it (despite having insurance) It's hugely heavy and impractical to use, he had to buy four batteries because two wasn't enough, and it basically requires a team to build and operate it In summary - two years ago one of the most affordable cinema cameras cost $20K plus, was such a PITA to use that he didn't take it places, and he used C100s instead.
Now in 2018, they release a 4K60 RAW cinema camera that costs less than 10% of the above RED, is smaller than the C100s but a significant margin, gets similar battery life, is easily hand-holdable, works with all kinds of third-party accessories, and comes with a free copy of an industry leading NLE.
Anyone who bitches about the battery life, size, cost or anything like that clearly don't have the faintest idea what a real cinema camera is like.
Get a grip - you're just embarrassing yourselves.

Do you know how many Sony a6xx/A7x/Fuji cameras with terrible battery life have been sold already?
The previous one needed almost everything to be usable, this one just some batteries (I have half a dozen of those without even owning a Canon camera), plus they offer 5" touch screen monitor, dual ISO sensor (and similar in size with the competition, bigger than most m43 cameras at least), mini XLR (how great is that?), usb C, usb c SSD recording and great great user interface (second favorite after my NX!).
They go head to head with the competition, and then add some more.
It isn't a hybrid camera, it is a cheap video camera, if the touch AF is OK with the Olympus 12-100, can be a great run and gun camera also. IBIS? No, but none of my cameras have it now, and none of the C and F cameras (or EVA) has it, and they are the tools of choice for most of my jobs and most jobs I have been around.
Plus, there is a license there for a full editing suit, that is very important for a tiny tiny business like mine, that I usually need a second editing desk for some months per year, and I hire someone to do some basic editing in my office.
My next hybrid system will have amazing AF and maybe IBIS (do not really care but it is a selling point at No4 or No5), this camera doesn't need them, especially for the price.
I would be waiting for real world reviews of course.

F*cking love the look of this. The did a good job with the T5 holder. Haven’t seen any other cages/setups that compares to this yet so this will do for starter!

Just received word from Hot Rod Cameras that only 50 cameras have been shipped to the US. ( I assume these cameras were all demos for the stores ) as Hot Rod Received one. They did tell me that they have been promised that some of their ordered cameras will arrive next week some time.

Hmm. Crappy.
Obviously Blackmagic didn't invite me to the hands-on. Pretty clueless of them not to.
I would have quite liked to have taken one on a shoot.
I do at least know what ProRes is

NX1 is actually more advanced with H.265, 6K readout, 1080/120fps and it is 5 years old.

It would be nice to save stills not only as DNG but as PNG with baked LUT and chosen aspect ratio.
Tokina 28-70 f/2.6-2.8, Tokina 28-70 f/2.8 with screw in hood (1st ver., on the attached picture) and with bayonet hood (2nd ver.), all with 77mm filter thread. Avoid 72mm version (Tokina Pro SV).

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K ‘Models Walking in Daylight’
John Brawley talks about the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for the first time. ‘Models Walking in Daylight’ is his first camera test where he checked out the camera’s ability to handle different skin tones.
“The whole point to this daylight test was to see how the camera handled skin tones. We were shooting these scenes later in the afternoon, so I was at ISO1000 or 1250, so it was at the lower ISO for this camera. I understand this gives more in dynamic range, so you have a little bit more highlight-headroom there. When I look at those shots now, I am really impressed at how good the dynamic range is. It is great to see all of that detail I was seeing was actually captured in those shots.”
“I don’t think people realize how easy it is to make things look cinematic with Micro Four Thirds! I know that there are a lot of people who like that 35mm full frame look, but it’s still very easy to get images with an out of focus background with the Micro Four Thirds sensor. I found it a great 4K sensor and really good compromise for a small camera that still gets really, really good looking pictures.”

Isn’t making such a statement the best way of causing panic?
But interesting observations - thank you. Any indication of when official footage might be available?

I attended a Black Magic event today and got to play around with the BMPCC4k for a while (maybe 30 mins or so).
I cannot discuss all my observations for fear of causing unnecessary panic, but I will state a few things I noticed.
1. The autofocus is not the best, but with the M43 lens advantage, and focus peaking things should be fine.
2. A lot of firmware features were disabled and flavours of ProRes were limited along with recording capabilities, to prevent people from sharing random non final firmware footage.
3. The on-board fans for the camera were not only absolutely silent, they were also unnoticeable (I put my finger over the vents and noticed almost nothing).
4. The Windowed HD is a substantial crop. So Metabones may make a BMPCC4k specific adaptor (which would be essential IMHO).
5. Low Light seems decent. I would like to compare the GH5s with it, though the Black Magic doesn't seem to have any noise reduction, and so at higher ISOs, noise seemed visible (as was the high level of detail in the image). I think once a few units reach reviewers, I would love to see this reviewed for low light, among other things.
6. I found it to be heavy with cinema lenses. But I guess this may have been due to the lenses more than the body. Also after the composite, it should shave off at least 100gms off the weight.
7. Very impressive ergonomics. Especially the wheels the grip.
After Panasonic's IBIS + OIS we're literally spoit if anything doesn't offer anything like that (Canon cameras?), it's a little disappointing (I know stabilizers are good enough).
I feel Blackmagic is working with a lot of accessory makers. I hope they get a battery grip with atleast 3 hours of juice.
If Panasonic tweaks the VLog, I am sure they can easily get atleast another Stop of Dynamic Range out of the cameras (if not more).
I realised that M43 is in need of a very fast zoom lens with a decent Range (f2 12-36mm). They could make it fat or large, who really cares. And it must have good OIS (for cameras that don't have IBIS).

Reminds me very much of the Samsung NX1, I hope the specs are at least as good!

Juxx989 reacted to Kisaha in Nikon FF Mirrorless
This pretty much looks like an NX1, I hope they went a similar route, instead of trying to please the hipsters of this world with minimalistic - but uncomfortable to hold and work - designs.
In anyway it is good that it is here so early. Remember, the rumors were talking for spring next year.
If some of the patented lenses are true, Nikon will make extra sensitive lenses and iso performance their selling point.

Heey,
I took the ump and the leica-r summicrons for a testspin. I did make a lot of errors but learned from them, so I can take that with me on the next project.
Feedback is welcome.
Kind regards,

Juxx989 reacted to webrunner5 in Tips for achieving this style if cinematography
This film sort of reminds me of Jackson Pollock the painter that dribbled, and threw paint on a canvas on the floor, and people thought it was the Cats Ass. Is it art or just crazy shit that is cultist? I tend to think the Latter on both. I am not saying things have to be perfection, but just being sloppy as hell, hmm.
But, and this is a Big but, I think this short is a Winner. It ain't normal as they say.
And this one, shot on a Red Scarlet, is the most watched short on Vimeo.
