If the A7s3 came with the processing of the FX6 and at least some of its video-related features, there would be no more reason to get any Panasonic nor Blackmagic camera let alone the FX6 at all. 😄

The GH4 was so hard to deal with, shot internally in 8 Bit V-Log L, the banding was insane.
Did some selective debanding on some areas to fix it. I wish I had an external recorder back then.
The GH5 after was much cleaner but was way oversharpened, had ghosting issues caused by heavy temporal filtering (fixed in mid 2017 via firmware) and seemed to have less DR to me, still kept it until the Pocket 4K came out which was later ruined with BRAW and its quite heavy spatial filtering and sharpening, my original P4K sadly died and had to be replaced with a model that didn't support earlier firmwares. 😭

Since then I've been using the Pocket 6K and later S1H with external BRAW are okish, the higher resolution compensates for the heavy filtering to a certain degree. My new GH6 outperforms both when it comes to texture with its internal ProRes recording, the image basically looks like RAW, almost unfiltered. I love it and used it as my A-camera on my last shoot. 🙂

I think lighting was fine. It emphazises the subtle facial expressions and emotions of the character actors. Though they should have used a haze machine to illustrate the mood and atmosphere much better of the laid back lads enjoying a perfect laid back lads evening and activity.  But the sound was a bit scratchy. I hope I got that right what you meant. 🙂

@deezid Awesome to read from you! Bought the S1 two years ago after Andrews article and after your deep dive observations regarding an honest hq cinema image without nasty processing artefacts. Hope to see more sneak peaks of your projects. Your GH4 footage was and is a legendary treat for lovers of the little camera with the big image. "Americana" was the name of the piece. A A7S3, FX3 with the processing of a FX6 would be a uber camera though.

HD 25p has always been of lesser quality on GH1,2 and G6,7,85, GX85. @webrunner5
Shooting in 4K on the adequate cameras helps, that exludes the GH2 and others of course. Or film in 24p and enjoy the classic GH2 image. Congratulations, btw to your purchase. GAS is an akward thang, BMPCC in the pocket but still you needed that legendary GH2, besides your legendary AF100. 🙂

Certainly if Mel Brooks had had access to the Alexa 35 he might have lit scene this in a moodier way.

Pretty good comparison of the BMPCC 4k versus the GH2 Hacked. GH2 10 times cheaper, takes better photos to boot. Sure, overall, the PK4 wins but.

    How is this interesting?
The FX3 and A7sIII are pretty much the full frame 10 bit equivalent to a GoPro when it comes to image processing.
Also usable latitude on these cameras is quite weak while the C70, which doesn't have any oversharpening nor heavy temporal filtering and therefor no smearing nor texture loss, is the best in its class and competes with the likes of the Pocket 6K (HR recovery) and Panasonic S series and even outperforms these ever so slightly with internal RAW.

Agreed. I’ve loved focusing on things like lighting and color grading. Composition. Things that actually make a difference to your image. So much on YT is gear reviews of expensive cameras, as I’ve said before we are at an image quality threshold, so all we can do is get better ourselves. I find there is a great mixture on this forum; we can all have fun geeking out about the next new camera or RAW codec, but then we will all turn around, reminisce about an old Gh1 or F3, and talk about lighting/color grading practice, with a dose of anamorphic lenses thrown in. Great forum, I wish it had as much traction as it used to get. I also miss Andrew’s constant articles of the past.

Well, I just bought a Panasonic GH2 from Adorama in good condition with battery and charger for $109.00. Hot Damn.

I've been considering getting a GH1 as an experiment, to see what I can do with it now with more experience/better lighting. I'm surprised by the color/fidelity of the GH1. In certain situations, newer cameras are better. I recently shot BTS on a friend's short in very low lighting conditions, with the GH5. As so-so as the GH5 is at 3200iso, the GH1 would be so much worse (color shift/noise above 640iso) and no stabilization. But in a narrative film situation with more control, there might be less of a difference. After writing the above, I decided to make a reel of some old GH1 footage remastered and regraded:
And here's a couple other test videos I would have included had I not deleted the raw footage:

Sounds like you got in at the right time. I do have an XA and don't shoot it quite as much as I should, although I do try as it looks so cute, is very small and results are good if I get the focus right. I had an Olympus RC but it was knackered and I sold it on for parts. Also had a Canon AF35ML and the AF was a crapshoot so that went back into the Bay.
I went on a compact film camera binge during lockdown as there was little or no other entertainment. Sold all thatI didn't love before I moved temporarily to New Zealand, which was a mild mistake as I could have made quite a bit more over there, at the ends of the Earth, than I did over here.
Here, at the pool in Tuscany there is a Dutch girl taking her first shots with a green sticker Contax G1 that she paid €700 for.
I am obsessed with film freshness because I'm profiling various film stocks to make emulation luts (for video) and Lightroom profiles (for photography). I was lucky to be able to buy fresh rolls of everything I'm interested in very shortly before this current shortage / supply chain problem hit. At the same time I have 40 - 50 rolls of various films that have been shipped across the world in the belly of a presumably equator-hugging ship on a five plus month journey at least once and/or zapped by X rays at numerous airports there and back again and I now have absolutely zero qualms about using these rolls for my own personal use now. I don't care how beat up the chemistry is, the value of that at today's prices is insane.

Ektar is, to my eye, the most 'digital' of all colour neg. Lovely stuff which as above, I habitually overexpose (https://www.vrimage.co.uk/IShootFilm/Ektar-100-June-2018/) - but I prefer Portra.

Wow I always wanted a Contax G1. That was a Very special camera with even more special lenses for it. You can't go wrong with one of those.

I have a big bag of Ektar, Portra, Fujicolor Industrial and Acros that I'm slowly working my way through. It's actually amazing how well film holds up after long storage in less than ideal conditions.

I found a pre-ordered R7 that stayed 2 days in the shop and the owner seems reluctant to go get it (maybe he has Fuji glass!)..if that be the case for tomorrow, I may have it at the end of the week..
The adapter is included as a gift from Canon, ordered the 16mm as well and an extra battery..
The lenses are not an issue if someone has EF glass, and we all know what EF glass means for the industry, everyone has some, and I am certain there will be a lot of RF-S releases in the future and additional RF ones..
I will be starting slowly with the system and I will see where it gets me. The thing is, Canon is now relevant, which wasn't 3-4 years ago..well done Canon!

I'm not optimistic about it staying alive very long in here, but anyway....
Is the 18-35 a good lens for AF?  I had one on my 700D and when focusing (either PDAF in photo mode or CDAF in video) it was clunky and noisy and felt like it was made of stone-age clockwork.

Anyone use ML RAW on a canon 70d?  Just think, pair it with a sigma 18-35 and you have a cheap raw setup with dual pixel AF!!

I see a S1H, S1, S5 or GH5/6 as a cinema camera such as those from blackmagic. Great image, ergonomics, built quality and battery.
Best AF in video for those who need it, no. Best image quality and codec, image stabilisation and camera bodies, yes, Panasonic. S5 going for only 300eur higher than a R7, offering a true cinema image and best in class low light latitude. Plus pixel to pixel S35 4K 24-60p, besides full frame downsampled 4k 24-30p.
For Canon AF fans with 10bit love and good 4k up to 30p, the R7 looks fine.
