OniBaba reacted to BTM_Pix in Why Gerald Undone is wrong about the Sigma Fp-L
The fp is by far the more spiritual successor to the original BMPCC than the BMPCC4K and 6K are.
Same advantages, some of the same drawbacks.
To the BMPCC it adds full frame, 4K, reasonable autofocus, better low light, better storage, an even more adaptable lens mount and now an EVF.
If you were into the BMPCC and want all that you had with that and a whole lot more then the fp should probably be on your list to check out unless your needs have changed in the meantime.
Similarly, I personally love the Leica T in combination with the Visoflex 020 EVF as I can have it both ways in terms of using it with the LCD or with the EVF and I can put tiny M mount lenses on it as well as electronic lenses.
Again, as with the BMPCC, the fp shares the same same advantages and some of the same drawbacks.
To the Leica T it adds full frame, RAW video, 4K video, far better autofocus, better low light and better storage options.
In the intervening years since I've had the Leica T, the L mount range of lenses has of course come round to meet it and there are now a boatload more lens options now and at a far more affordable price.
I've been droning on for a long time about how really good it is having the tilt capability of the Visoflex 020 on the Leica T and now it has come to the fp.
So, again, If you were into the Leica T/TL and want all that you had with that and a whole lot more then the fp should probably be on your list to check out unless your needs have changed in the meantime.
I love both of those cameras so, for me, the fp is just their logical conclusion (or close to it) so I love the fp too.
Is it just limited to people who love those two cameras ?
I don't think it should be but I do get why not only does it not appeal to those looking for an alternative to the usual suspects but that its appeal to others can seem quite bewildering.
Sigma could probably do with adding a feature in to the fp that would be enough of a differentiation for people to say "Mmm...the Sigma can do <insert feature here> though so that is a big plus in its favour" and even up the spec chart a bit more.
I think if that added feature was ProRes (regular not RAW), preferably internal but to SSD if not, then that could be the one to shake things up.
Even then, though, it will likely not be for everyone and I think thats a good thing for everyone in terms of manufacturers not all producing very similar cameras.

Yes, the Youtube influencer machine is awful, but Gerald is the least offensive offender. He does all technical reviews, true, but at least he does a thorough and honest job. Only CVP is anywhere close to the usefulness of his reviews from a pure tech standpoint.

Maybe save that criticism for the Matti Haapoja's and Peter McKinnon's of YouTube and not the guy that does rather dry long form reviews and regularly criticizes the things you think he's trying to sell?
I say this as a very vocal critic of the YouTube filmmaking bubble. I don't always agree with Gerald but it's ridiculous to act as though he's looking to maximize clicks and affiliate sales. His videos would be under 10 minutes and feature him pouring coffee (gotta get that pouring sound!), riding a one wheel around, and otherwise pretending to have a far more exciting life than he does, all while talking about how awesome x is and that you should definitely check those affiliate links down below!
At least be fair if you're gonna criticize the guy.

When I was growing up, in the 1970s, on a wet Sunday or during a winter half-term, if you wanted to watch something on TV there was a very limited choice (in the UK, we only had 3 channels) so at some point one always found oneself watching old black and white movies, old technicolour movies... just old movies. I swear I learnt more about history, humans, social interaction and - importantly in the context of this discussion - storytelling - from those movies.
Now and for a good number of years up to now, kids in that same state of wet-weekend ennui can watch terabytes of 'content' tailored precisely to their sensibilities. They have no need to sit on the sofa and gradually get drawn in to a piece of narrative storytelling made decades before their births. One of the results of this that I've noticed in my own children is that movies I consider to be great pieces of art and entertainment, they find unbearably slow-paced. Modern mass-market films - built on beats - have a 'wow' moment roughly every minute or so. It's a relentless succession of - as @Ed David mentions above - dopamine hits. So obviously the industry, competing against social media, 30 second 'fail' videos and needing to attract and retain the attention of an audience that will switch off anything that features slow burns and subtle inferences, has responded by catering to that need for mindless, incessant thrills (Not saying Hollywodd hasn't always done that, to an extent, but its output now is probably less varied and nuanced than ever before).
Maybe people get a bit more discerning and open to these things as they get older. I hope so. I sometimes feel like large swathes of us have been the subjects of a giant unintentional experiment, the results of which help no-one and are, one-by-one, destroying so many parts of our shared culture that - had we been asked - we would have preferred to keep intact.

One aspect that is driving so many of us nuts these days in cinema (both for theater and streaming serials) is the excess of political correctness. It seems film studios have a Rule Book which requires every new series or movie to have a quota of actors which represent white people, black people, hispanic people, oriental-looking people, a woman, someone in the LGBT+ community, someone with some physical handicap, etc.
This is simply ridiculous, the real world does not function like this and it drives me (and it seems, most of my friends and family) mad.
And the worst is that if someone complains that James Bond should be played by a British White Male (as it was conceived by its author) instead of an American Black Female, we're called racists. This is getting ridiculously out of hand...

Welcome to the world of woke cancel culture.  You can't take risks anymore.  Can't offend people.  Can't say un-PC things. It already destroyed comedy, especially stand-up acts.  Used to be college campuses were where this thrived.  Now it's shunned.  Maybe we'll be able to laugh at ourselves again in another 50 years.

Was thinking about the exact same thing today after watching some of Herzog's very first films from the 70s.
    Dude was really "out there".
Sadly, we're not even on the experimenting level of cinema of the 80s-90s right now, let alone the 60s and 70s.
I swear the ratio of crappy-to-respectable movies and series on Amazon and Netflix is about 9 to 1.
But hey...that's what the masses want 😶

Before "the internet" we got books on conspiracy theories and suicidal sects.
Now we got wikipedia and it seems ALL other internet sources copy & paste its content.

I am indeed! I meant to thank bloggers (including Andrew specifically) for bringing the issue of overheating up so much. The pressure about the timer nonsense forced Canon to change the way the camera monitors temperatures, which is the reason the mod works at all.

Very interesting. The camera is now actually reading thermal data instead of the internal timer, so cooling it works from the looks of it.
This matches with other reports that you can now put a r6 into the fridge to help it cool down or https://m.dpreview.com/articles/3725693825/firmware-v1-1-1-makes-the-canon-r6-much-more-usable

I think there is a bit of a political move here as well. Studio execs LOVE big numbers. "Oh, that new camera is higher resolution than any other camera? I want my films shot on that". Now, I think the move away from bayer pattern for full RGB and the insane gradability this footage will likely have is in my mind worth the price. But they made a good decision being higher resolution than their competition, and rest assured this camera is not in direct competition with the A7s or S1h, its with RED and ARRI. They are making the feature film and TV industry sit up and notice them and this is a good thing.

I am not American, and I think Trump says the strangest things. But, he is arguably the most successful US president of all time. I may not be a Trump fan, but I prefer him over both the Clintons, Obama and many others. Obama getting the Nobel for farting in his dreams was way more shady than anything else. EVER.
The US has been heading for a financial collapse for the last few years (since the Dollar Store and Wallmark rise). Now China is literally taking away millions of US jobs and Fortune 500 is inundated with Chinese Companies. Apple would have been relegated to 4th or 5th position in smartphone sales, if the US wasnt doing all the shady stuff it is (to be fair, US Trade and IP Laws have been anything but fair since they were created). Also TikTok and other chinese tech startups are going to be displacing Twitter and Facebook (even though it doesn't do similar things to either) very soon. That's why Google is planning a TikTok ban soon (if it hadn't already).
Europe and the US are heading for both economic and cultural collapse. The only question, I guess, is how quickly.

BMD makes a considerable profit from the support hardware that drives much of the broadcast, filmmaking, and streaming industry.  Though their cameras sell very well, it's the other products that actually truly drive their business.  I have two fist fulls of Decklink products, I have no idea how many little converter boxes, and about to pull a trigger on one of their newer boxes.  Good products with a handsome markup, sometimes very, very handsome.  But this allows for the continued ecosystem of low priced, decent value cameras while also keeping Resolve "free" or extremely cheap to purchase.  BMD couldn't just be a camera company without those other products, the profits from their other activities is what actually led to them being a camera company.

Don't know about licensing REDCODE or anything, but rather publicly there's been some sort of interactions between Sony and Atomos along the way, we just don't know the details or even results from whatever transpired.  There would likely be a cost/value assessment for licensing any tech, but if you've got something good that makes you unique, it would be tough to fork that over to a competitor without a kings ransom I imagine even if you were to entertain the concept at all.
To be profitable on YouTube, and I mean actually making decent money, it requires building a brand and presence.  Figuring out your genre, angle, and executing it well is key.  Sticking to the tech side of things when you look at a guy like MKBHD for instance, he started out making fairly amateurish looking content.  He had the energy and talent, but not the polish and experience.  He kept at it, grew, and locked in on what made his content good, invested in areas of production value, and is now a well oiled machine of content generation and in turn has become a brand all his own.   Same for Pewdiepie (though it's certainly sometimes quantity over quality with some of that content), Neistat, etc.  Those are all personality channels that have led to individuals as a brand.  There's other entities who have really popular channels with variety content and all that.  Buzzfeed comes to mind and they are full studio producing content at this point.  It is at the end of the day about making good content if you want to gain an audience, gaining that momentum, and keeping at it is pretty hard if you are doing weekly or even daily work.  Keeping the quality of the content consistent is another hurdle for sure.  At whatever point, there's a saturation level where your videos from past to present have lots of views and will continue to do so forever, so you in essence are building a library of material that can make you income for a long time, which adds to the monthly payout.  That's outside of any sponsorship or side gigs any of these peeps might have.  Neistat is a filmmaker and occasionally does jobs for instance outside of the bazillion other things he's up to.  And he's kept his energy up and even opened up about that struggle and pressure from time to time.  It ain't easy once you've got some traction.
