Deadcode reacted to helium in Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
Here's Mr. Deezid's grade -- or something or other, no idea why he offered the shot here as he does -- of an S1 v. BMPCC 4K shot, kindly provided by another participant. See that brown potato quality of the BMPCC 4K and the wonderfully "organic" quality of the S1?
https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/34763-panasonic-s1-v-log-new-image-quality-king-of-the-hill/page/25/#comments
You can find my own basic adjustment (not grade!) of these two shots a few post down in that S1 thread. Still no sign of brown potatoes v. organic wonders, but maybe that's because, unlike some here, I'm not a professional colorist?

Deadcode reacted to MrSMW in Rode Wireless Go - A Warning
2 sets, 4 jobs, 4 failures, so I have returned for a refund via Amazon.
I don't want to diss Rode as I use other audio equipment from them and had really high hopes for this system, but it's let me down several times now over the last few weddings.
Whether connected to camcorder, or Fuji XT3 or Sony recorders, I haven't had a single seamless ceremony or set of speeches.
The final straw was this weekend, direct line of sight, indoors, under 20 metres/60 feet and the end result was again incomplete.
Even at 10 metres/30 feet with the transmitter in grooms pocket and lav mic on lapel, - intermittent result.
I have 2 sets marked up A and B and it's happened with both so either I have been incredibly unlucky, or the system is not flawless.
Whatever the case may be...and as above, no intent to slag Rode, but I can't rely on this system so next weekend going back to Sony recorders, lav mics + shotgun mics and Pluralize.
Just a heads up and for anyone using the system, make sure you have a back up audio system running...

Deadcode got a reaction from Mark Romero 2 in AMD Radeon VII or dual NVIDIA quatro P4000
P4000 = GTX 1070
2x GTX 1070 = 1x Radeon VII
It is cheaper to buy another nvidia card, the performance will be almost the same.
But it's highly depends on card support, right now i dont think Radeon VII has full resolve support.
Unfortunetaly neither of these options will give you 1080 24 fps rendering while using Temporal NR (Better) with 5 frames averaging. You will get around 20-22 fps

Your grade was already perfect!

Deadcode reacted to DBounce in So Is a7 III Still The Dynamic Range King? (Not tolling, just asking)
That's exactly what I have come to understand. Honestly, all of the top cameras produce a good enough image for serious work. It's the other components that most of us are missing. Creative lighting, thoughtful camera movement and most importantly... a good story.
Find a system that works for you and shoot. Work within the limitations. Focus on telling the story. That's get you get better.

Deadcode got a reaction from Zeng in So Is a7 III Still The Dynamic Range King? (Not tolling, just asking)
Why does DR matter so much? we are far beyond the level of necessary DR for content creation.
Most of you guys want 15-16-17+ stops DR because you want "Arri like" highlight roll-off.
You can achieve very nice roll-off even with a GoPro Hero 7 with proper grading: (in this case: 10 stops DR from the camera in 14+ stops environment)

You need to post in this forum more often. You always have something helpful whenever you post here.

Deadcode got a reaction from Mark Romero 2 in So Is a7 III Still The Dynamic Range King? (Not tolling, just asking)
Long time ago i tested my 5D Mark II against my a6300 and a rented BMPCC
In the comparison i made all cameras was shooting ETTR with their best available (raw, slog2) settings
As you may know from the technical threads at magiclanter.fm the max available dynamic range for 5D2 raw @iso100 ettr is 11.7 stops
The BMPCC and the a6300 were both 2 stops better in the shadows which means they had around 13.7 stops. It was noisy as hell, so im not talking about usable dynamic range.
The a6300 was cleaner, the BM had more detail but also more noise / grain.
After further testing i would say all of the cameras i was talked about has 1.5 stops less usable (i mean noise free, or able boost up with noise reduction) dynamic range.
So: 5D: 10 stops, BM: 12 stops, a6300: 12 stops

Deadcode got a reaction from kye in The peer-to-peer colour grading thread
Do you guys can see the same colors after uploading to this page?
I had to bump up the saturation almost +50% to get the same results after uploading the graded image here. So it's completly oversaturated in resolve, and looks ok here right now:

Deadcode got a reaction from Rinad Amir in GH5S dual ISO - what the heck is going on?
For the GH5s the dual native ISO values are 400 and 2500.
Technically you underexposed ISO400 by 1,66 stops. In pitch black. What do you expect?
ISO1600 is clean, because it's overexposed ISO2500.
Oh, try HFR 240 fps with VLOG-L and ISO1250. And dont forget to tell me which trashcan will you use to dump the camera ?

Deadcode got a reaction from Lux Shots in Panasonic GH5 10 bit internal recording not good enough
Im grading in Davinci Resolve, and im using an old Dell U2711 (which is 8 bit), and working in REC709.
Used to grade 5D Raw and Sony SLOG2.
In the last couple of month i started grading in ACES, and this is where i can feel the 100Mbps 8bit from Sony is not enough.

Deadcode got a reaction from Lux Shots in Panasonic GH5 10 bit internal recording not good enough
i have tried to grade 400Mbps 10 bit GH5 VLOG footage and i was impressed how well the codec holds even with extreme grading. I could not see any difference even in 400% magnification.

Deadcode got a reaction from KnightsFan in ProRes and H.265 Comparison
Zoom in and hit play. There is the difference.
I created a sample myself from my old 5D2 RAW footage. Real codec killer due to the heavy moire and aliasing all over the image. If you zoom in and hit play you can see the ProRes holds up much better. But actually the h265 smoothens out some of the smearing and moire, so it's actually better looking ? h265 100Mbps vs ProRes 422HQ

Deadcode got a reaction from Mark Romero 2 in ProRes and H.265 Comparison
These results are shocking for me ? h265 > ProRes ?! Insane. I think i will redo this test with my own RAW footage.

Deadcode got a reaction from zerocool22 in ProRes and H.265 Comparison
With ridiculous amount of crop there is a difference in texture detail. "B" is ProRes (left) and "A" is h265. (right)
Thanks for the test!

Deadcode reacted to Coiii in Sony A7R IV / A7S III / A9 II to feature 8K video, as new 60MP and 36MP full frame sensor specs leak
The sensor it's "capable" in paper. It doesn't mean that the processor and everything else will be capable to support that resolution to capture video.
At best, the new cameras will max at 4K60 10 bit. Expecting 8K it's dumb.

Deadcode reacted to OliKMIA in Raid Replacement Hard Drive Recommendations
There isn't much options, the 3 majors brands left are seagate, WD and Toshiba. All about the same in terms of performance and reliability (check blackbaze stats on its website). So far the largest HD are in the 12-16 TB range and the price per TB doesn't lower beyond 3-4TB. We are reaching the maximim size and nothing should change until next year when WD and Seagate will introduce HAMR and MAMR.
As for speed, you should get a 7200rpm but the best is not to use HD for editing, even mounted in Raid 5.
Here are some comparison I made of actual price and product range
